CONDA: a CONtextual Dual-Annotated dataset for in-game toxicity understanding and detection

Traditional toxicity detection models have focused on the single utterance level without deeper understanding of context. We introduce CONDA, a new dataset for in-game toxic language detection enabling joint intent classification and slot filling analysis, which is the core task of Natural Language Understanding (NLU). The dataset consists of 45K utterances from 12K conversations from the chat logs of 1.9K completed Dota 2 matches. We propose a robust dual semantic-level toxicity framework, which handles utterance and token-level patterns, and rich contextual chatting history. Accompanying the dataset is a thorough in-game toxicity analysis, which provides comprehensive understanding of context at utterance, token, and dual levels. Inspired by NLU, we also apply its metrics to the toxicity detection tasks for assessing toxicity and game-specific aspects. We evaluate strong NLU models on CONDA, providing fine-grained results for different intent classes and slot classes. Furthermore, we examine the coverage of toxicity nature in our dataset by comparing it with other toxicity datasets.

FedNLP: An interpretable NLP System to Decode Federal Reserve Communications

The Federal Reserve System (the Fed) plays a significant role in affecting monetary policy and financial conditions worldwide. Although it is important to analyse the Fed's communications to extract useful information, it is generally long-form and complex due to the ambiguous and esoteric nature of content. In this paper, we present FedNLP, an interpretable multi-component Natural Language Processing system to decode Federal Reserve communications. This system is designed for end-users to explore how NLP techniques can assist their holistic understanding of the Fed's communications with NO coding. Behind the scenes, FedNLP uses multiple NLP models from traditional machine learning algorithms to deep neural network architectures in each downstream task. The demonstration shows multiple results at once including sentiment analysis, summary of the document, prediction of the Federal Funds Rate movement and visualization for interpreting the prediction model's result.

Event-Driven LSTM For Forex Price Prediction

The majority of studies in the field of AI guided financial trading focus on purely applying machine learning algorithms to continuous historical price and technical analysis data. However, due to non-stationary and high volatile nature of Forex market most algorithms fail when put into real practice. We developed novel event-driven features which indicate a change of trend in direction. We then build long deep learning models to predict a retracement point providing a perfect entry point to gain maximum profit. We use a simple recurrent neural network (RNN) as our baseline model and compared with short-term memory (LSTM), bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU). Our experiment results show that the proposed event-driven feature selection together with the proposed models can form a robust prediction system which supports accurate trading strategies with minimal risk. Our best model on 15-minutes interval data for the EUR/GBP currency achieved RME 0.006x10^(-3) , RMSE 2.407x10^(-3), MAE 1.708x10^(-3), MAPE 0.194% outperforming previous studies.

VICTR: Visual Information Captured Text Representation for Text-to-Image Multimodal Tasks

Text-to-image multimodal tasks, generating/retrieving an image from a given text description, are extremely challenging tasks since raw text descriptions cover quite limited information in order to fully describe visually realistic images. We propose a new visual contextual text representation for text-to-image multimodal tasks, VICTR, which captures rich visual semantic information of objects from the text input. First, we use the text description as initial input and conduct dependency parsing to extract the syntactic structure and analyse the semantic aspect, including object quantities, to extract the scene graph. Then, we train the extracted objects, attributes, and relations in the scene graph and the corresponding geometric relation information using Graph Convolutional Networks, and it generates text representation which integrates textual and visual semantic information. The text representation is aggregated with word-level and sentence-level embedding to generate both visual contextual word and sentence representation. For the evaluation, we attached VICTR to the state-of-the-art models in text-to-image generation.VICTR is easily added to existing models and improves across both quantitative and qualitative aspects.

Detect All Abuse! Toward Universal Abusive Language Detection Models

Online abusive language detection (ALD) has become a societal issue of increasing importance in recent years. Several previous works in online ALD focused on solving a single abusive language problem in a single domain, like Twitter, and have not been successfully transferable to the general ALD task or domain. In this paper, we introduce a new generic ALD framework, MACAS, which is capable of addressing several types of ALD tasks across different domains. Our generic framework covers multi-aspect abusive language embeddings that represent the target and content aspects of abusive language and applies a textual graph embedding that analyses the user's linguistic behaviour. Then, we propose and use the cross-attention gate flow mechanism to embrace multiple aspects of abusive language. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation results show that our ALD algorithm rivals or exceeds the six state-of-the-art ALD algorithms across seven ALD datasets covering multiple aspects of abusive language and different online community domains.

REXUP: I REason, I EXtract, I UPdate with Structured Compositional Reasoning for Visual Question Answering

Visual question answering (VQA) is a challenging multi-modal task that requires not only the semantic understanding of both images and questions, but also the sound perception of a step-by-step reasoning process that would lead to the correct answer. So far, most successful attempts in VQA have been focused on only one aspect, either the interaction of visual pixel features of images and word features of questions, or the reasoning process of answering the question in an image with simple objects. In this paper, we propose a deep reasoning VQA model with explicit visual structure-aware textual information, and it works well in capturing step-by-step reasoning process and detecting a complex object-relationship in photo-realistic images. REXUP network consists of two branches, image object-oriented and scene graph oriented, which jointly works with super-diagonal fusion compositional attention network. We quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate REXUP on the GQA dataset and conduct extensive ablation studies to explore the reasons behind REXUP's effectiveness. Our best model significantly outperforms the precious state-of-the-art, which delivers 92.7% on the validation set and 73.1% on the test-dev set.

AMI-Net+: A Novel Multi-Instance Neural Network for Medical Diagnosis from Incomplete and Imbalanced Data

In medical real-world study (RWS), how to fully utilize the fragmentary and scarce information in model training to generate the solid diagnosis results is a challenging task. In this work, we introduce a novel multi-instance neural network, AMI-Net+, to train and predict from the incomplete and extremely imbalanced data. It is more effective than the state-of-art method, AMI-Net. First, we also implement embedding, multi-head attention and gated attention-based multi-instance pooling to capture the relations of symptoms themselves and with the given disease. Besides, we propose var-ious improvements to AMI-Net, that the cross-entropy loss is replaced by focal loss and we propose a novel self-adaptive multi-instance pooling method on instance-level to obtain the bag representation. We validate the performance of AMI-Net+ on two real-world datasets, from two different medical domains. Results show that our approach outperforms other base-line models by a considerable margin.

Attention-based Multi-instance Neural Network for Medical Diagnosis from Incomplete and Low Quality Data

One way to extract patterns from clinical records is to consider each patient record as a bag with various number of instances in the form of symptoms. Medical diagnosis is to discover informative ones first and then map them to one or more diseases. In many cases, patients are represented as vectors in some feature space and a classifier is applied after to generate diagnosis results. However, in many real-world cases, data is often of low-quality due to a variety of reasons, such as data consistency, integrity, completeness, accuracy, etc. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, attention based multi-instance neural network (AMI-Net), to make the single disease classification only based on the existing and valid information in the real-world outpatient records. In the context of a patient, it takes a bag of instances as input and output the bag label directly in end-to-end way. Embedding layer is adopted at the beginning, mapping instances into an embedding space which represents the individual patient condition. The correlations among instances and their importance for the final classification are captured by multi-head attention transformer, instance-level multi-instance pooling and bag-level multi-instance pooling. The proposed approach was test on two non-standardized and highly imbalanced datasets, one in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) domain and the other in the Western Medicine (WM) domain. Our preliminary results show that the proposed approach outperforms all baselines results by a significant margin.

CNN based Multi-Instance Multi-Task Learning for Syndrome Differentiation of Diabetic Patients

Syndrome differentiation in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the process of understanding and reasoning body condition, which is the essential step and premise of effective treatments. However, due to its complexity and lack of standardization, it is challenging to achieve. In this study, we consider each patient's record as a one-dimensional image and symptoms as pixels, in which missing and negative values are represented by zero pixels. The objective is to find relevant symptoms first and then map them to proper syndromes, that is similar to the object detection problem in computer vision. Inspired from it, we employ multi-instance multi-task learning combined with the convolutional neural network (MIMT-CNN) for syndrome differentiation, which takes region proposals as input and output image labels directly. The neural network consists of region proposals generation, convolutional layer, fully connected layer, and max pooling (multi-instance pooling) layer followed by the sigmoid function in each syndrome prediction task for image representation learning and final results generation. On the diabetes dataset, it performs better than all other baseline methods. Moreover, it shows stability and reliability to generate results, even on the dataset with small sample size, a large number of missing values and noises.
