Dependence of the Substructure Abundance on the Orientation Coherence of the Halo Tidal Field

A numerical evidence for the dependence of the substructure abundance of cluster halos on the orientation coherence of the surrounding tidal fields is presented. Applying the adapted minimal spanning tree (MST) algorithm to the cluster halos with $M\ge 10^{14}\,h^{-1}\,M_{\odot}$ from the Big MultiDark-Planck Simulations, we identify primary MST stems composed of multiple nodes as the filaments and measure their specific sizes (spatial extents per node), which quantify the orientation coherence of the tidal field on the cluster scales. Classifying the cluster halos into five samples by the specific sizes of their host filaments and tallying the mass distributions of the five samples, we investigate if and how the substructure abundance of the cluster halos differs among the five samples. It is found that the cluster halos embedded in the filaments with larger specific sizes tend to possess less substructures. This anti-correlation is also shown robust against narrowing down the formation epochs of the cluster halos as well as against fixing the node number of the filaments. Given that the filaments with larger specific sizes form at the regions where the surrounding tidal fields are coherent over large scales in the orientations of their principal axes, we suggest that in the filaments with larger specific sizes the satellite infall and matter accretion onto the cluster halos should be obstructed due to the development of the tangential velocities in the plane perpendicular to the elongated axes of the filaments.

The Effect of Modified Gravity on the Odds of the Bound Violations of the Turn-Around Radii

The turn-around radii of the galaxy groups show the imprint of a long battle between their self-gravitational forces and the accelerating space. The standard $Λ$CDM cosmology based on the general relativity (GR) predicts the existence of an upper bound on the expectation value of the turn-around radius which is rarely violated by individual galaxy groups. We speculate that a deviation of the gravitational law from GR on the cosmological scale could cause an appreciable shift of the mean turn-around radius to higher values and make the occurrence of the bound violation more probable. Analyzing the data from high-resolution N-body simulations for two specific models with modified gravity (MG) and the standard GR+$Λ$CDM cosmology, we determine the turn-around radii of the massive Rockstar groups from the peculiar motions of the galactic halos located in the bound zone where the fifth force generated by MG is expected to be at most partially shielded. We detect a $4σ$ signal of difference in the odds of the bound violations between a fiducial MG and the GR models, proving that the odds of the bound violations increase with the strength of the fifth force produced by the presence of MG. The advantage of using the odds of the bound violations as a complementary diagnostics to probe the nature of gravity is discussed.

Independent Measurements of the Dynamical Masses of Six Galaxy Clusters in the Local Universe

We present independent measurements of the masses of the galaxy clusters in the local universe by employing the Dynamical Mass Estimator (DME) originally developed by Falco et al in 2014. In the catalog of the galaxy groups/clusters constructed by Tempel et al. from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10, we search for those as the targets around which the neighbor galaxies constitute thin straight filamentary structures in the configuration space spanned by the redshifts and the projected distances. Out of the $29$ Sloan clusters that have $100$ or more member galaxies, a total of six targets are found to have filamentary structures in their bound zones. For each of the six targets, we construct the profile of the recession velocities of the filament galaxies, which depends on the cluster mass and the angle of the filament relative the line of the sight direction. Fitting the constructed profile to the universal formula with constant amplitude and slope, we statistically determine the dynamical mass of each cluster and compare it with the previous estimates made by a conventional method. The weak and strong points of the DME as well as its prospect for the measurements of the dynamical masses of the high-$z$ clusters are discussed.

Abell 2744 may be a supercluster aligned along the sightline

To explain the unusual richness and compactness of the Abell 2744, we propose a hypothesis that it may be a rich supercluster aligned along the sightline, and present a supporting evidence obtained numerically from the MultiDark Planck 2 simulations with a linear box size of $1\,h^{-1}$Gpc. Applying the friends-of-friends (FoF) algorithm with a linkage length of $0.33$ to a sample of the cluster-size halos from the simulations, we identify the superclusters and investigate how many superclusters have filamentary branches that would appear to be similar to the Abell 2744 if the filamentary axis is aligned with the sightline. Generating randomly a unit vector as a sightline at the position of the core member of each supercluster and projecting the positions of the members onto the plane perpendicular to the direction of the sightline, we measure two dimensional distances ($R_{2d}$) of the member halos from the core for each supercluster. Defining a Abell 2744-like spuercluster as the one having a filamentary branch composed of eight or more members with $R_{2d}\le 1\,$Mpc and masses comparable to those of the observed Abell 2744 substructures, we find one Abell 2744-like supercluster at $z=0.3$ and two at $z=0$. Repeating the same analysis but with the data from the Big MultiDark Planck simulations performed on a larger box of linear size of $2.5\,h^{-1}$Mpc, we find that the number of the Abell 2744-like superclusters at $z=0$ increases up to eighteen, among which three are found more massive than $5\times 10^{15}\,M_{\odot}$.

Turning Around along the Cosmic Web

A bound-violation designates a case that the turn-around radius of a bound object exceeds the upper limit put by the spherical collapse model based on the standard $Λ$CDM paradigm. Given that the turn-around radius of a bound object is a stochastic quantity and that the spherical model overly simplifies the true gravitational collapse which actually proceeds anisotropically along the cosmic web, the rarity of the occurrence of a bound violation may depend on the web environment. Assuming a Planck cosmology, we numerically construct the bound-zone peculiar velocity profiles along the cosmic web (filaments and sheets) around the isolated groups with virial mass $M_{\rm v}\ge 3\times 10^{13}\,h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ identified in the Small MultiDark Planck simulations and determine the radial distances at which their peculiar velocities equal the Hubble expansion speed as the turn-around radii of the groups. It is found that although the average turn-around radii of the isolated groups are well below the spherical bound-limit on all mass scales, the bound violations are not forbidden for individual groups and that the cosmic web has an effect of reducing the rarity of the occurrence of a bound violation. Explaining that the spherical bound limit on the turn-around radius in fact represents the threshold distance up to which the intervention of the external gravitational field in the bound-zone peculiar velocity profiles around the non-isolated groups stays negligible, we discuss the possibility of using the threshold distance scale to constrain locally the equation of state of dark energy .

On the Universality of the Bound-Zone Peculiar Velocity Profile

A numerical evidence for the universality of the bound-zone peculiar velocity profile in a LambdaCDM universe is presented. Analyzing the dark matter halo catalogs from the Millennium-II simulation, we determine the average peculiar velocity profiles of the objects located in the bound zones around massive group-size halos at various redshifts and compare them to an analytic formula characterized by two parameters, the amplitude and slope of the profile. The best-fit values of the two parameters are found to be robust against the changes of the mass scales and the key cosmological parameters. It is also found that the amplitude and slope parameters of the bound-zone peculiar velocity profile are constant but only in the limited ranges of redshifts. In the dark matter dominated epoch corresponding to z> 0.6 the two parameters have constant values. In the transition period corresponding to 0.2=< z=< 0.6 when the density of Lambda begins to exceed that of dark matter the two parameters grow almost linearly with redshifts. At later epochs z<0.2 when the Lambda-domination prevails the two parameters regain constancy settling upon higher constant values. Noting that the length of the transition period depends on the amount of Lambda and speculating that the linear evolution of the profile with redshifts in the transition period is a unique feature of the Lambda-dominated universe, we suggest that the redshift evolution of the bound-zone peculiar velocity profile should be a powerful local discriminator of dark energy candidates.

A Bound Violation on the Galaxy Group Scale: The Turn-Around Radius of NGC 5353/4

The first observational evidence for the violation of the maximum turn-around radius on the galaxy group scale is presented. The NGC 5353/4 group is chosen as an ideal target for our investigation of the bound-violation because of its proximity, low-density environment, optimal mass scale, and existence of a nearby thin straight filament. Using the observational data on the line-of-sight velocities and three-dimensional distances of the filament galaxies located in the bound zone of the NGC 5353/4 group, we construct their radial velocity profile as a function of separation distance from the group center and then compare it to the analytic formula obtained empirically by Falco et al. (2014) to find the best-fit value of an adjustable parameter with the help of the maximum likelihood method. The turn-around radius of NGC 5353/4 is determined to be the separation distance where the adjusted analytic formula for the radial velocity profile yields zero. The estimated turn-around radius of NGC 5353/4 turns out to substantially exceed the upper limit predicted by the spherical model based on the LambdaCDM cosmology. Even when the restrictive condition of spherical symmetry is released, the estimated value is found to be only marginally consistent with the LambdaCDM expectation.

An observational detection of the bridge effect of void filaments

The bridge effect of void filaments is a phrase coined by Park & Lee (2009b) to explain the correlations found in a numerical experiment between the luminosity of the void galaxies and the degree of the straightness of their host filaments. Their numerical finding implies that a straight void filament provides a narrow channel for the efficient transportation of gas and matter particles from the surroundings into the void galaxies. Analyzing the Sloan void catalog constructed by Pan et al (2012), we identify the filamentary structures in void regions and determine the specific size of each void filament as a measure of its straightness. To avoid possible spurious signals caused by the Malmquist bias, we consider only those void filaments whose redshifts are in the range of 0=< z <= 0.02 and find a clear tendency that the void galaxies located in the more straight filaments are on average more luminous, which is in qualitative agreement with the numerical prediction. It is also shown that the strength of correlation increases with the number of the member galaxies of the void filaments, which can be physically understood on the grounds that the more stretched filaments can connect the dense surroundings even to the galaxies located deep in the central parts of the voids. This observational evidence may provide a key clue to the puzzling issue of why the void galaxies have higher specific star formation rates and bluer colors than their wall counterparts.

A New Dynamical Mass Measurement for the Virgo Cluster using the Radial Velocity Profile of the Filament Galaxies

The radial velocities of the galaxies in the vicinity of a cluster shows deviation from the pure Hubble flow due to their gravitational interaction with the cluster. According to a recent study of Falco et al. (2014) based on a high-resolution N-body simulation, the radial velocity profile of the galaxies located at distances larger than three times the virial radius of a neighbor cluster can be well approximated by a universal formula and could be reconstructed from direct observables provided that the galaxies are distributed along one dimensional filament. They suggested an algorithm for the estimation of the dynamic mass of a cluster $M_{\rm v}$ by fitting the universal formula from the simulation to the reconstructed radial velocity profile of the filament galaxies around the cluster from observations. We apply the algorithm to two narrow straight filaments (called the Filament A and B) that were identified recently by Kim et al. (2015) in the vicinity of the Virgo cluster from the NASA-Sloan-Atlas catalog. The dynamical mass of the Virgo cluster is estimated to be $M_{\rm v}=(0.84^{+2.75}_{-0.51})\times10^{15}\,h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\rm v}= (3.24^{+4.99}_{-1.31})\times 10^{15}\,h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ for the cases of the Filament A and B, respectively. We discuss observational and theoretical systematics intrinsic to the method of Falco et al. (2014) as well as the physical implication of the final results.

An observational signal of the void shape correlation and its link to the cosmic web

The shapes of cosmic voids are prone to distortions by the external tidal forces since their low-densities imply a lower internal resistance. This susceptibility of the void shapes to the tidal distortions makes them useful as an indicator of the large-scale tidal and density fields, despite the practical difficulty in defining them. Using the void catalog constructed by Pan et al. (2012) from the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR7), we detect a clear 4 sigma signal of spatial correlations of the void shapes on the scale of 20 Mpc/h and show that the signal is robust against the projection of the void shapes onto the plane of sky. By constructing a simple analytic model for the void shape correlation, within the framework of tidal torque theory, we demonstrate that the void shape correlation function scales linearly with the two-point correlation function of the linear density field. We also find a direct observational evidence for the cross-correlation of the void shapes with the large-scale velocity shear field that was linearly reconstructed by Lee et al. (2014) from the SDSS DR7. We discuss the possibility of using the void shape correlation function to break the degeneracy between the density parameter and the power spectrum amplitude and to independently constrain the neutrino mass as well.

Detection of the velocity shear effect on the spatial distributions of the galactic satellites in isolated systems

We report a detection of the effect of the large-scale velocity shear on the spatial distributions of the galactic satellites around the isolated hosts. Identifying the isolated galactic systems each of which consists of a single host galaxy and its satellites from the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and reconstructing linearly the velocity shear field in the local universe, we measure the alignments between the relative positions of the satellites from their isolated hosts and the principal axes of the local velocity shear tensors projected on to the plane of sky. We find a clear signal that the galactic satellites in isolated systems are located preferentially along the directions of the minor principal axes of the large-scale velocity shear field. Those galactic satellites which are spirals, brighter, located at distances larger than the projected virial radii of the hosts and belonging to the spiral hosts yield stronger alignment signals, which implies that the alignment strength depends on the formation and accretion epochs of the galactic satellites. It is also shown that the alignment strength is quite insensitive to the cosmic web environment as well as the size and luminosity of the isolated hosts. Although this result is consistent with the numerical finding of Libeskind et al. based on a N-body experiment, due to the very low significance of the observed signals it remains inconclusive whether or not the velocity shear effect on the satellite distribution is truly universal.

The Extended Zel'dovich Mass Functions of Clusters and Isolated Clusters in the Presence of Primordial Non-Gaussianity

We present new formulae for the mass functions of the clusters and the isolated clusters with non Gaussian initial conditions. For this study, we adopt the Extended Zel'dovich (EZL) model as a basic framework, focusing on the case of primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type whose degree is quantified by a single parameter $f_{nl}$. By making a quantitative comparison with the N-body results, we first demonstrate that the EZL formula with the constant values of three fitting parameters still works remarkably well for the local $f_{nl}$ case. We also modify the EZL formula to find an analytic expression for the mass function of isolated clusters which turns out to have only one fitting parameter other than the overall normalization factor and showed that the modified EZL formula with a constant value of the fitting parameter matches excellently the N-body results with various values of $f_{nl}$ at various redshifts. Given the simplicity of the generalized EZL formulae and their good agreements with the numerical results, we finally conclude that the EZL mass functions of the massive clusters and isolated clusters should be useful as an analytic guideline to constrain the scale dependence of the primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type.

Alignments of the Galaxies in and around the Virgo Cluster with the Local Velocity Shear

An observational evidence is presented for the alignment between the cosmic sheet and the principal axis of the velocity shear field at the position of the Virgo cluster. The galaxies in and around the Virgo cluster from the Extended Virgo Cluster Catalog recently constructed by Kim et al. are used to determine the direction of the local sheet. The peculiar velocity field reconstructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 is analyzed to estimate the local velocity shear tensor at the Virgo center. Showing first that the minor principal axis of the local velocity shear tensor is almost parallel to the line of sight direction, we detect a clear signal of alignment between the positions of the Virgo satellites and the intermediate principal axis of the local velocity shear projected onto the plane of the sky. Furthermore, the dwarf satellites are found to appear more strongly aligned than the normal counterparts, which is interpreted as indication of the following: (i) The normal and the dwarf satellites fall in the Virgo cluster preferentially along the local filament and the local sheet, respectively. (ii) The local filament is aligned with the minor principal axis of the local velocity shear while the local sheet is in parallel to the plane spanned by the minor and the intermediate principal axes. Our result is consistent with the recent numerical claim that the velocity shear is a good tracer of the cosmic web.

Breaking the Cosmic Degeneracy between Modified Gravity and Massive Neutrinos with the Cosmic Web

In a recent work, Baldi et al. highlighted the issue of cosmic degeneracies, consisting in the fact that the standard statistics of the large-scale structure might not be sufficient to conclusively test cosmological models beyond $Λ$CDM when multiple extensions of the standard scenario coexist in nature. In particular, it was shown that the characteristic features of an $f(R)$ Modified Gravity theory and of massive neutrinos with an appreciable total mass $Σ_{i}m_{ν_{i}}$ are suppressed in most of the basic large-scale structure observables for a specific combination of the main parameters of the two non-standard models. In the present work, we explore the possibility that the mean specific size of the supercluster spines -- which was recently proposed as a non-standard statistics by Shim and Lee to probe gravity at large scales -- can help to break this cosmic degeneracy. By analyzing the halo samples from N-body simulations featuring various combinations of $f(R)$ and $Σ_{i}m_{ν_{i}}$ we find that -- at the present epoch -- the value of $Σ_{i}m_{ν_{i}}$ required to maximally suppress the effects of $f(R)$ gravity on the specific sizes of the superclusters spines is different from that found for the other standard statistics. Furthermore, it is also shown that at higher redshifts ($z\ge 0.3$) the deviations of the mean specific sizes of the supercluster spines for all of the four considered combinations from its value for the standard $Λ$CDM case are statistically significant.

Massive Gravity wrapped in the Cosmic Web

We study how the filamentary pattern of the cosmic web changes if the true gravity deviates from the general relativity (GR) on the large scale. The f(R) gravity whose strength is controlled to satisfy the current observational constraints on the cluster scale is adopted as our fiducial model and a large N-body simulation of high-resolution is utilized for this study. By applying the minimal spanning tree algorithm to the halo catalogs from the simulation at various epochs, we identify the main stems of the rich superclusters located in the most prominent filamentary section of the cosmic web and determine their spatial extents per member cluster as the degree of their straightness. It is found that the $f(R)$ gravity has an effect of significantly bending the superclusters and that the effect becomes stronger as the universe evolves. Even in the case where the deviation from GR is too small to be detectable by any other observables, the degree of the supercluster straightness exhibits conspicuous difference between the $f(R)$ and the GR models. Our results also imply that the supercluster straightness could be a useful discriminator of f(R) gravity from the coupled dark energy since it is shown to evolve differently between the two models. As a final conclusion, the degree of the straightness of the rich superclusters should provide a powerful cosmological test of large scale gravity.

The Effect of Primordial Anti-Biasing on the Local Measurement of the Key Cosmological Parameters

The best-fit values of the density parameter and the amplitude of the linear density power spectrum obtained from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature field scanned by the Planck satellite are found to notably disagree with those estimated from the abundance of galaxy clusters observed in the local universe. Basically, the observed cluster counts are significantly lower than the prediction of the standard flat LambdaCDM model with the key cosmological parameters set at the Planck best-fit values. We show that this inconsistency between the local and the early universe can be well resolved without failing the currently favored flat LambdaCDM cosmology if the local universe corresponds to a region embedded in a crest of the primordial gravitational potential field. Incorporating the condition of positive primordial potential into the theoretical prediction for the mass function of cluster halos, we show that the observed lower number densities of the galaxy clusters are in fact fully consistent with the Planck universe.

An Analytic Formula for the Supercluster Mass Function

We present an analytic formula for the supercluster mass function which is constructed by modifying the extended Zel'dovich model for the halo mass function. The formula has two characteristic parameters whose best-fit values are determined by fitting to the numerical results from N-body simulations for the standard LambdaCDM cosmology. The parameters are found to be independent of redshifts and robust against variation of the key cosmological parameters. Under the assumption that the same formula for the supercluster mass function is valid for non-standard cosmological models, we show that the relative abundance of the rich superclusters should be a powerful indicator of any deviation of the real universe from the prediction of the standard LambdaCDM model.

Dark Sector Coupling Bends the Superclusters

The galaxy clusters exhibit noticeably anisotropic pattern in their clustering, which is vividly manifested by the presence of rich filament-like superclusters. The more anisotropic the clustering of galaxy clusters is, the more straight the rich filament-like superclusters become. Given that the degree of the anisotropy in the largest-scale clustering depends sensitively on the nature of dark energy, the supercluster straightness may play a complimentary role in testing dynamic dark energy models. Here we focus on the coupled dark energy (cDE) models which assume the existence of dark sector coupling between scalar field dark energy and nonbaryonic dark matter. Determining the spines of the superclusters identified in the publicly available group catalogs from the CODECS (COupled Dark Energy Cosmological Simulations) for four different cDE models as well as for the LCDM model, we quantify the straightness of each supercluster as the spatial extent of its spine per member cluster where a supercluster spine represents the main stem of the minimal spanning tree constructed out of the member clusters. It is shown that the dark sector coupling plays a role in making the supercluster less straight relative to the LCDM case and that in a cDE model with supergravity potential the superclusters are least straight. We also find that the difference in the degree of the supercluster straightness between the cDE and the LCDM cases increases with redshifts. A physical interpretation of our result as well as its cosmological implication are discussed.
