Non-Archimedean equidistribution and group actions on trees. We give equidistribution results of elements of function fields over finite fields, and of quadratic irrationals over these fields, in their completed local fields. We deduce these results from equidistribution theorems of common perpendiculars in quotients of trees by lattices in their automorphism groups, proved by using ergodic properties of the discrete geodesic flow.

Counting common perpendicular arcs in negative curvature

Let $D^-$ and $D^+$ be properly immersed closed locally convex subsets of a Riemannian manifold with pinched negative sectional curvature. Using mixing properties of the geodesic flow, we give an asymptotic formula as $t\to+\infty$ for the number of common perpendiculars of length at most $t$ from $D^-$ to $D^+$, counted with multiplicities, and we prove the equidistribution in the outer and inner unit normal bundles of $D^-$ and $D^+$ of the tangent vectors at the endpoints of the common perpendiculars. When the manifold is compact with exponential decay of correlations or arithmetic with finite volume, we give an error term for the asymptotic. As an application, we give an asymptotic formula for the number of connected components of the domain of discontinuity of Kleinian groups as their diameter goes to $0$.

Counting and equidistribution in Heisenberg groups

We strongly develop the relationship between complex hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic counting or equidistribution applications, that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on complex hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension $2$. We prove a Mertens' formula for the integer points over a quadratic imaginary number fields $K$ in the light cone of Hermitian forms, as well as an equidistribution theorem of the set of rational points over $K$ in Heisenberg groups. We give a counting formula for the cubic points over $K$ in the complex projective plane whose Galois conjugates are orthogonal and isotropic for a given Hermitian form over $K$, and a counting and equidistribution result for arithmetic chains in the Heisenberg group when their Cygan diameter tends to $0$.

A classification of $\mathbb C$-Fuchsian subgroups of Picard modular groups

Given an imaginary quadratic extension $K$ of $\mathbb Q$, we give a classification of the maximal nonelementary subgroups of the Picard modular group $\operatorname{PSU}_{1,2}(\mathcal O_K)$ preserving a complex geodesic in the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H^2_\mathbb C$. Complementing work of Holzapfel, Chinburg-Stover and Möller-Toledo, we show that these maximal $\mathbb C$-Fuchsian subgroups are arithmetic, arising from a quaternion algebra $\Big(\!\begin{array}{c} D\,,D_K\\\hline\mathbb QQ\end{array} \!\Big)$ for some explicit $D\in\mathbb N-\{0\}$ and $D_K$ the discriminant of $K$. We thus prove the existence of infinitely many orbits of $K$-arithmetic chains in the hypersphere of $\mathbb P_2(\mathbb C)$.

A survey of some arithmetic applications of ergodic theory in negative curvature

This paper is a survey of some arithmetic applications of techniques in the geometry and ergodic theory of negatively curved Riemannian manifolds, focusing on the joint works of the authors. We describe Diophantine approximation results of real numbers by quadratic irrational ones, and we discuss various results on the equidistribution in $\mathbb R$, $\mathbb C$ and in the Heisenberg groups of arithmetically defined points. We explain how these results are consequences of equidistribution and counting properties of common perpendiculars between locally convex subsets in negatively curved orbifolds, proven using dynamical and ergodic properties of their geodesic flows. This exposition is based on lectures at the conference "Chaire Jean Morlet: Géométrie et systèmes dynamiques", at the CIRM, Luminy, 2014. We thank B. Hasselblatt for his strong encouragements to write this survey.

On the hyperbolic orbital counting problem in conjugacy classes

Given a discrete group $Γ$ of isometries of a negatively curved manifold $\widetilde M$, a nontrivial conjugacy class $\mathfrak K$ in $Γ$ and $x_0\in\widetilde M$, we give asymptotic counting results, as $t\to +\infty$, on the number of orbit points $γx_0$ at distance at most $t$ from $x_0$, when $γ$ is restricted to be in $\mathfrak K$, as well as related equidistribution results. These results generalise and extend work of Huber on cocompact hyperbolic lattices in dimension $2$. We also study the growth of given conjugacy classes in finitely generated groups endowed with a word metric.

On the arithmetic of crossratios and generalised Mertens' formulas

We develop the relation between hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic equidistribution problems that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on real hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension up to 5. We prove generalisations of Mertens' formula for quadratic imaginary number fields and definite quaternion algebras over the rational numbers, counting results of quadratic irrationals with respect to two different natural complexities, and counting results of representations of (algebraic) integers by binary quadratic, Hermitian and Hamiltonian forms with error bounds. For each such statement, we prove an equidistribution result of the corresponding arithmetically defined points. Furthermore, we study the asymptotic properties of crossratios of such points, and expand Pollicott's recent results on the Schottky-Klein prime functions.

Counting arcs in negative curvature

Let M be a complete Riemannian manifold with negative curvature, and let C_-, C_+ be two properly immersed closed convex subsets of M. We survey the asymptotic behaviour of the number of common perpendiculars of length at most s from C_- to C_+, giving error terms and counting with weights, starting from the work of Huber, Herrmann, Margulis and ending with the works of the authors. We describe the relationship with counting problems in circle packings of Kontorovich, Oh, Shah. We survey the tools used to obtain the precise asymptotics (Bowen-Margulis and Gibbs measures, skinning measures). We describe several arithmetic applications, in particular the ones by the authors on the asymptotics of the number of representations of integers by binary quadratic, Hermitian or Hamiltonian forms.

On the arithmetic and geometry of binary Hamiltonian forms

Given an indefinite binary quaternionic Hermitian form $f$ with coefficients in a maximal order of a definite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb Q$, we give a precise asymptotic equivalent to the number of nonequivalent representations, satisfying some congruence properties, of the rational integers with absolute value at most $s$ by $f$, as $s$ tends to $+\infty$. We compute the volumes of hyperbolic 5-manifolds constructed by quaternions using Eisenstein series. In the Appendix, V. Emery computes these volumes using Prasad's general formula. We use hyperbolic geometry in dimension 5 to describe the reduction theory of both definite and indefinite binary quaternionic Hermitian forms.

Skinning measures in negative curvature and equidistribution of equidistant submanifolds

Let C be a locally convex subset of a negatively curved Riemannian manifold M. We define the skinning measure on the outer unit normal bundle to C in M by pulling back the Patterson-Sullivan measures at infinity, and give a finiteness result of skinning measures, generalising the work of Oh and Shah, with different methods. We prove that the skinning measures, when finite, of the equidistant hypersurfaces to C equidistribute to the Bowen-Margulis measure on the unit tangent bundle of M, assuming only that the Bowen-Margulis measure is finite and mixing for the geodesic flow. Under additional assumptions on the rate of mixing, we give a control on the rate of equidistribution.

On the representation of integers by indefinite binary Hermitian forms

Given an integral indefinite binary Hermitian form f over an imaginary quadratic number field, we give a precise asymptotic equivalent to the number of nonequivalent representations, satisfying some congruence properties, of the rational integers with absolute value at most s by f, as s tends to infinity.

Équidistribution, comptage et approximation par irrationnels quadratiques

Let $M$ be a finite volume hyperbolic manifold, we show the equidistribution in $M$ of the equidistant hypersurfaces to a finite volume totally geodesic submanifold $C$. We prove a precise asymptotic on the number of geodesic arcs of lengths at most $t$, that are perpendicular to $C$ and to the boundary of a cuspidal neighbourhood of $M$. We deduce from it counting results of quadratic irrationals over $\QQ$ or over imaginary quadratic extensions of $\QQ$, in given orbits of congruence subgroups of the modular groups.

On strictly convex subsets in negatively curved manifolds

In a complete simply connected Riemannian manifold X of pinched negative curvature, we give a sharp criterion for a subset C to be the epsilon-neighbourhood of some convex subset of X, in terms of the extrinsic curvatures of the boundary of C.

On the closedness of approximation spectra

Generalizing Cusick's theorem on the closedness of the classical Lagrange spectrum for the approximation of real numbers by rational ones, we prove that various approximation spectra are closed, using penetration properties of the geodesic flow in cusp neighbourhoods in negatively curved manifolds and a result of Maucourant.

Spiraling spectra of geodesic lines in negatively curved manifolds

Given a negatively curved geodesic metric space M, we study the asymptotic penetration behaviour of geodesic lines of M in small neighbourhoods of closed geodesics and of other compact convex subsets of M. We define a spiraling spectrum which gives precise information on the asymptotic spiraling lengths of geodesic lines around these objects. We prove analogs of the theorems of Dirichlet, Hall and Cusick in this context. As a consequence, we obtain Diophantine approximation results of real numbers, complex numbers, or elements of the Heisenberg group by irrational quadratic ones.

Prescribing the behaviour of geodesics in negative curvature

Given a family of (almost) disjoint strictly convex subsets of a complete negatively curved Riemannian manifold M, such as balls, horoballs, tubular neighborhoods of totally geodesic submanifolds, etc, the aim of this paper is to construct geodesic rays or lines in M which have exactly once an exactly prescribed (big enough) penetration in one of them, and otherwise avoid (or do not enter too much in) them. Several applications are given, including a definite improvement of the unclouding problem of [PP1], the prescription of heights of geodesic lines in a finite volume such M, or of spiraling times around a closed geodesic in a closed such M. We also prove that the Hall ray phenomenon described by Hall in special arithmetic situations and by Schmidt-Sheingorn for hyperbolic surfaces is in fact only a negative curvature property.

Unclouding the sky of negatively curved manifolds

Let M be a complete simply connected Riemannian manifold, with sectional curvature K bounded above by -1. Under some assumptions on the geometry of the boundary of M, which are satisfied for instance if M is a symmetric space, or has dimension 2, we prove that given any family of horoballs in M, and any point x_0 outside these horoballs, it is possible to shrink uniformly, by a finite amount depending only on M, these horoballs so that some geodesic ray starting from x_0 avoids the shrunk horoballs. As an application, we give a uniform upper bound on the infimum of the heights of the closed geodesics in the finite volume quotients of M.
