Timelike meson form-factors beyond the elastic region from lattice QCD

We present a calculation of the vector-isovector timelike form-factors of the pion and the kaon using lattice quantum chromodynamics. We calculate two-point correlation functions with $m_\pi \sim 280$ MeV, extracting both the finite-volume spectrum and matrix elements for these states created from the vacuum by a vector current. After determining the coupled-channel $\pi\pi, K\overline{K}$ scattering amplitudes, we perform the necessary correction for the significant finite-volume effects present in the current matrix elements, leading to the timelike form-factors. We find these to be dominated by the presence of the $\rho$ resonance, and we extract its decay constant by an analytic continuation of the amplitudes to the resonance pole. In addition, the spacelike pion form-factor is determined on the same lattice configurations, and a dispersive parameterization is used to simultaneously describe the spacelike and elastic timelike regions.

50 Years of Quantum Chromodynamics

This paper presents a comprehensive review of both the theory and experimental successes of Quantum Chromodynamics, starting with its emergence as a well defined theory in 1972-73 and following developments and results up to the present day. Topics include a review of the earliest theoretical and experimental foundations; the fundamental constants of QCD; an introductory discussion of lattice QCD, the only known method for obtaining exact predictions from QCD; methods for approximating QCD, with special focus on effective field theories; QCD under extreme conditions; measurements and predictions of meson and baryon states; a special discussion of the structure of the nucleon; techniques for study of QCD at high energy, including treatment of jets and showers; measurements at colliders; weak decays and quark mixing; and a section on the future, which discusses new experimental facilities or upgrades currently funded. The paper is intended to provide a broad background for Ph.D. students and postdocs starting their career. Some contributions include personal accounts of how the ideas or experiments were developed.

Radiative decay of the resonant $K^*$ and the $γK \to K π$ amplitude from lattice QCD

We present the first calculation in lattice QCD of the process $γK \to Kπ$ in which the narrow $K^*$ vector resonance appears. Using a lattice on which the pion has a mass of 284 MeV, we determine the transition amplitude at 128 points in the $(Q^2, E_{Kπ})$ plane, and find suitable resonant scattering descriptions. We demonstrate the need to account for $S$--wave $Kπ$ elastic scattering when converting the finite-volume matrix elements computed in lattice QCD to the physically relevant infinite-volume matrix elements, even when we are primarily interested in the $P$--wave amplitude. Analytically continuing parameterizations of the $γK \to Kπ$ amplitude to the $K^*$ resonance pole, we obtain the $K^{*+} \to K^+ γ$ transition form-factor, and compare the $Q^2=0$ value to the corresponding value extracted from the experimental partial-decay width.

The coupled-channel scattering on a torus

Based on the Hamiltonian formalism approach, a generalized Lüscher's formula for two particle scattering in both the elastic and coupled-channel cases in moving frames is derived from a relativistic Lippmann-Schwinger equation. Some strategies for extracting scattering amplitudes for a coupled-channel system from the discrete finite-volume spectrum are discussed and illustrated with a toy model of two-channel resonant scattering. This formalism will, in the near future, be used to extract information about hadron scattering from lattice QCD computations.

Physics Opportunities with the 12 GeV Upgrade at Jefferson Lab

This white paper summarizes the scientific opportunities for utilization of the upgraded 12 GeV Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) and associated experimental equipment at Jefferson Lab. It is based on the 52 proposals recommended for approval by the Jefferson Lab Program Advisory Committee. The upgraded facility will enable a new experimental program with substantial discovery potential to address important topics in nuclear, hadronic, and electroweak physics.

Exploring the Spectrum of QCD using the Lattice

The calculation of the spectrum of QCD is key to an understanding of the strong interactions, and vital if we are to capitalize on the experimental study of the spectrum. In this paper, we describe progress towards understanding the spectrum of resonances of both mesons and baryons from lattice QCD, focusing in particular on the resonances of the $I=1/2$ nucleon states, and of charmonium mesons composed of the heavy charmed quarks.

A novel quark-field creation operator construction for hadronic physics in lattice QCD

A new quark-field smearing algorithm is defined which enables efficient calculations of a broad range of hadron correlation functions. The technique applies a low-rank operator to define smooth fields that are to be used in hadron creation operators. The resulting space of smooth fields is small enough that all elements of the reduced quark propagator can be computed exactly at reasonable computational cost. Correlations between arbitrary sources, including multi hadron operators can be computed a posteriori without requiring new lattice Dirac operator inversions. The method is tested on realistic lattice sizes with light dynamical quarks.

Exotic and excited-state radiative transitions in charmonium from lattice QCD

We compute, for the first time using lattice QCD methods, radiative transition rates involving excited charmonium states, states of high spin and exotics. Utilizing a large basis of interpolating fields we are able to project out various excited state contributions to three-point correlators computed on quenched anisotropic lattices. In the first lattice QCD calculation of the exotic 1-+ eta_c1 radiative decay, we find a large partial width Gamma(eta_c1 -> J/psi gamma) ~ 100 keV. We find clear signals for electric dipole and magnetic quadrupole transition form factors in chi_c2 -> J/psi gamma, calculated for the first time in this framework, and study transitions involving excited psi and chi_c1,2 states. We calculate hindered magnetic dipole transition widths without the sensitivity to assumptions made in model studies and find statistically significant signals, including a non-exotic vector hybrid candidate Y_hyb? -> eta_c gamma. As well as comparison to experimental data, we discuss in some detail the phenomenology suggested by our results and the extent to which it mirrors that of quark potential models and make suggestions for the interpretation of our results involving exotic quantum numbered states.

Light-Meson Two-Photon Decays in Full QCD

We present a study of two-photon decays of light mesons, focusing on the neutral pion decay. This important process highlights the effects of the axial anomaly in QCD but has been little studied on the lattice. By applying the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann (LSZ) reduction formula, we reconstruct the electromagnetic matrix elements from three-point vector-vector Green functions calculated on 2+1-flavor isotropic clover lattices.

First results from 2+1 dynamical quark flavors on an anisotropic lattice: light-hadron spectroscopy and setting the strange-quark mass

We present the first light-hadron spectroscopy on a set of $N_f=2+1$ dynamical, anisotropic lattices. A convenient set of coordinates that parameterize the two-dimensional plane of light and strange-quark masses is introduced. These coordinates are used to extrapolate data obtained at the simulated values of the quark masses to the physical light and strange-quark point. A measurement of the Sommer scale on these ensembles is made, and the performance of the hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm used for generating the ensembles is estimated.

Radiative Transitions in Charmonium

The form factors for the radiative transitions between charmonium mesons are investigated. We employ an anisotropic lattice using a Wilson gauge action, and domain-wall fermion action. We extrapolate the form factors to $Q^2 = 0$, corresponding to a real photon, using quark-model-inspired functions. Finally, comparison is made with photocouplings extracted from the measured radiative widths, where known. Our preliminary results find photocouplings commensurate with these experimentally extracted values.
