Magnetization curves and low-temperature thermodynamics of two spin-1/2 Heisenberg edge-shared tetrahedra

A full energy spectrum, magnetization and susceptibility of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on two edge-shared tetrahedra are exactly calculated by assuming two different coupling constants. It is shown that a ground state in zero field is either a singlet or a triplet state depending on a relative strength of both coupling constants. Low-temperature magnetization curves may exhibit three different sequences of intermediate plateaux at the following fractional values of the saturation magnetization: 1/3-2/3-1, 0-1/3-2/3-1 or 0-2/3-1. The inverse susceptibility displays a marked temperature dependence significantly influenced by a character of the zero-field ground state. The obtained theoretical results are confronted with recent high-field magnetization data of the mineral crystal fedotovite K2Cu3(SO4)3.

Anomalous spin frustration enforced by a magnetoelastic coupling in the mixed-spin Ising model on decorated planar lattices

The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising model on a decorated planar lattice accounting for lattice vibrations of decorating atoms is treated by making use of the canonical coordinate transformation, the decoration-iteration transformation, and the harmonic approximation. It is shown that the magnetoelastic coupling gives rise to an effective single-ion anisotropy and three-site four-spin interaction, which are responsible for the anomalous spin frustration of the decorating spins in virtue of a competition with the equilibrium nearest-neighbor exchange interaction between the nodal and decorating spins. The ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are constructed for the particular case of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model on a decorated square lattice for which thermal dependencies of the spontaneous magnetization and specific heat are also examined in detail. It is evidenced that a sufficiently strong magnetoelastic coupling leads to a peculiar coexistence of the antiferromagnetic long-range order of the nodal spins with the disorder of the decorating spins within the frustrated antiferromagnetic phase, which may also exhibit double reentrant phase transitions. The investigated model displays a variety of temperature dependencies of the total specific heat, which may involve in its magnetic part one or two logarithmic divergences apart from one or two additional round maxima superimposed on a standard thermal dependence of the lattice part of the specific heat.

Magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of the exactly solvable mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated triangular lattice in a magnetic field

The ground state, zero-temperature magnetization process, critical behaviour and isothermal entropy change of the mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated triangular lattice in a magnetic field are exactly studied after performing the generalized decoration-iteration mapping transformation. It is shown that both the inverse and conventional magnetocaloric effect can be found near the absolute zero temperature. The former phenomenon can be found in a vicinity of the discontinuous phase transitions and their crossing, while the latter one occurs in some paramagnetic phases due to a spin frustration to be present at zero magnetic field. The inverse magnetocaloric effect can also be detected slightly above continuous phase transitions following the power-law dependence $|-Δ{\cal S}_{iso}^{min}|\propto h^n$, where $n$ depends basically on the ground-state spin ordering.

Strong- and weak-universal critical behaviour of a mixed-spin Ising model with triplet interactions on the Union Jack (centered square) lattice

The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising model on the Union Jack (centered square) lattice with four different three-spin (triplet) interactions and the uniaxial single-ion anisotropy is exactly solved by establishing a rigorous mapping equivalence with the corresponding zero-field (symmetric) eight-vertex model on a dual square lattice. A rigorous proof of the aforementioned exact mapping equivalence is provided by two independent approaches exploiting either a graph-theoretical or spin representation of the zero-field eight-vertex model. An influence of the interaction anisotropy as well as the uniaxial single-ion anisotropy on phase transitions and critical phenomena is examined in particular. It is shown that the considered model exhibits a strong-universal critical behaviour with constant critical exponents when considering the isotropic model with four equal triplet interactions or the anisotropic model with one triplet interaction differing from the other three. The anisotropic models with two different triplet interactions, which are pairwise equal to each other, contrarily exhibit a weak-universal critical behaviour with critical exponents continuously varying with a relative strength of the triplet interactions as well as the uniaxial single-ion anisotropy. It is evidenced that the variations of critical exponents of the mixed-spin Ising models with the integer-valued spins S differ basically from their counterparts with the half-odd-integer spins S.

A coupled spin-electron diamond chain with different Landé g-factors of localized Ising spins and mobile electrons

A coupled spin-electron diamond chain with localized Ising spins placed on its nodal sites and mobile electrons delocalized over interstitial sites is explored in a magnetic field taking into account the difference between Landé g-factors of the localized spins and mobile electrons. The ground-state phase diagram is constituted by two classical ferrimagnetic phases, the quantum unsaturated paramagnetic phase and the saturated paramagnetic phase. Both classical ferrimagnetic phases as well as the unsaturated paramagnetic phase are reflected in a low-temperature magnetization curve as intermediate magnetization plateaus. The unsaturated paramagnetic phase is quantum in its character as evidenced by the fermionic concurrence calculated for a pair of the mobile electrons hopping in between the interstitial sites. It is shown that the magnetic field can under certain conditions induce a quantum entanglement above the disentangled ground state.

Magnetic signatures of quantum critical points of the ferrimagnetic mixed spin-(1/2, S) Heisenberg chains at finite temperatures

Magnetic properties of the ferrimagnetic mixed spin-(1/2,S) Heisenberg chains are examined using quantum Monte Carlo simulations for two different quantum spin numbers S = 1 and 3/2. The calculated magnetization curves at finite temperatures are confronted with zero-temperature magnetization data obtained within density-matrix renormalization group method, which imply an existence of two quantum critical points determining a breakdown of the gapped Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetic phase and Tomonaga-Luttinger spin-liquid phase, respectively. While a square-root behavior of the magnetization accompanying each quantum critical point is gradually smoothed upon rising temperature, the susceptibility and isothermal entropy change data provide a stronger evidence of the quantum critical points at finite temperatures through marked local maxima and minima, respectively.

Magnetization process and low-temperature thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain

Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain with the intraplaquette and monomer-plaquette interactions are examined within a two-component lattice-gas model of hard-core monomers, which takes into account all low-lying energy modes in a highly frustrated parameter space involving the monomer-tetramer, localized many-magnon and fully polarized ground states. It is shown that the developed lattice-gas model satisfactorily describes all pronounced features of the low-temperature magnetization process and the magneto-thermodynamics such as abrupt changes of the isothermal magnetization curves, a double-peak structure of the specific heat or a giant magnetocaloric effect.

Diversity of quantum ground states and quantum phase transitions of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain with regularly alternating monomeric and square-plaquette sites is investigated using various analytical and numerical methods: variational technique, localized-magnon approach, exact diagonalization (ED) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The model belongs to the class of flat-band systems and it has a rich ground-state phase diagram including phases with spontaneously broken translational symmetry. Moreover, it exhibits an anomalous low-temperature thermodynamics close to continuous or discontinuous field-driven quantum phase transitions between three quantum ferrimagnetic phases, tetramer-hexamer phase, monomer-tetramer phase, localized-magnon phase and two different spin-liquid phases. If the intra-plaquette coupling is at least twice as strong as the monomer-plaquette coupling, the variational method furnishes a rigorous proof of the monomer-tetramer ground state in a low-field region and the localized-magnon approach provides an exact evidence of a single magnon trapped at each square plaquette in a high-field region. In the rest of parameter space we have numerically studied the ground-state phase diagram and magnetization process using DMRG and ED methods. It is shown that the zero-temperature magnetization curve may involve up to four intermediate plateaus at zero, one-fifth, two-fifth and three-fifth of the saturation magnetization, while the specific heat exhibits a striking low-temperature peak in a vicinity of discontinuous quantum phase transitions.

Doping-dependent magnetization plateaus of a coupled spin-electron chain: exact results

A coupled spin-electron chain composed of localized Ising spins and mobile electrons is exactly solved in an external magnetic field within the transfer-matrix method. The ground-state phase diagram involves in total seven different ground states, which differ in the number of mobile electrons per unit cell and the respective spin arrangements. A rigorous analysis of the low-temperature magnetization process reveals doping-dependent magnetization plateaus, which may be tuned through the density of mobile electrons. It is demonstrated that the fractional value of the electron density is responsible for an enhanced magnetocaloric effect due to an annealed bond disorder of the mobile electrons.

Exactly solved mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising-Heisenberg distorted diamond chain

The mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising-Heisenberg model on a distorted diamond chain with the spin-1 nodal atoms and the spin-1/2 interstitial atoms is exactly solved by the transfer-matrix method. An influence of the geometric spin frustration and the parallelogram distortion on the ground state, magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat of the mixed-spin Ising-Heisenberg distorted diamond chain are investigated in detail. It is demonstrated that the zero-temperature magnetization curve may involve intermediate plateaus just at zero and one-half of the saturation magnetization. The temperature dependence of the specific heat may have up to three distinct peaks at zero magnetic field and up to four distinct peaks at a non-zero magnetic field. The origin of multipeak thermal behavior of the specific heat is comprehensively studied.

Fractional magnetization plateaux of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain revisited: strong-coupling approach developed from the exactly solved Ising-Heisenberg model

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain is considered within the perturbative strong-coupling approach, which is developed from the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intradimer and the Ising interdimer couplings. Although the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain exhibits just intermediate plateaux at zero, one-quarter and one-half of the saturation magnetization, the perturbative treatment up to second order stemming from this exactly solvable model additionally corroborates the fractional one-third plateau as well as the gapless Luttinger spin-liquid phase. It is evidenced that the approximate results obtained from the strong-coupling approach are in an excellent agreement with the state-of-the-art numerical data obtained for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain within the exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group method. The nature of individual quantum ground states is comprehensively studied within the developed perturbation theory.

Inverse magnetocaloric effect in the spin-1/2 Fisher's super-exchange antiferromagnet

The isothermal entropy change and the adiabatic temperature change for the exactly solved spin-1/2 Fisher's super-exchange antiferromagnet are rigorously calculated in order to examine magnetocaloric properties of the model in a vicinity of the second-order phase transition. It is shown that the large inverse magnetocaloric effect occurs around the temperature interval $T_c(h\neq0) < T < T_c(h=0)$ for any magnetic-field change $Δh: 0 \to h$. The most pronounced inverse magnetocaloric effect can be found for the magnetic-field change, which coincides with the critical field of a zero-temperature phase transition from the antiferromagnetically ordered ground state to the paramagnetic one.

Breakdown of a Magnetization Plateau in Ferrimagnetic Mixed Spin-(1/2,S) Heisenberg Chains Due to a Quantum Phase Transition Towards the Luttinger Spin Liquid

Magnetization curves of the ferrimagnetic mixed spin-(1/2,S) Heisenberg chains are calculated with the help of density-matrix renormalization group method for several quantum spin numbers S=1, 3/2, 2 and 5/2. It is shown that the ferrimagnetic mixed spin-(1/2,S) Heisenberg chains exhibit irrespective of the spin value S exactly one intermediate magnetization plateau, which can be identified with the gapped Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetic ground state. The magnetization plateau due to the Lieb-Mattis ferrimagnetism breaks down at a quantum phase transition towards the Luttinger spin liquid, which is characterized by a continuous change of the magnetization with the magnetic field until another quantum critical point is reached at the saturation field.

The Schottky-type specific heat as an indicator of relative degeneracy between ground and first-excited states: the case study of regular Ising polyhedra

The specific heat of regular Ising polyhedra is investigated in detail as a function of temperature and magnetic field. It is shown that the regular Ising polyhedra display diverse double-peak temperature dependences of the specific heat whenever the magnetic field approaches a level-crossing field. The Schottky theory of a two-level system often provides a plausible explanation of a height and position of low-temperature peak, which emerges in the specific heat of a regular Ising polyhedron due to low-lying excitations from a ground state to a first-excited state. The height and position of Schottky-type maximum depends essentially on a relative degeneracy of the ground state and first-excited state, which are in general quite distinct in geometrically frustrated Ising spin clusters. Low-temperature variations of the specific heat with the magnetic field exhibit multipeak structure with two peaks (of generally different height) symmetrically placed around each level-crossing field.

Exactly solvable spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the second-neighbor interaction between nodal spins

The spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the second-neighbor interaction between the nodal spins is rigorously solved using the transfer-matrix method. Exact results for the ground state, magnetization process and specific heat are presented and discussed in particular. It is shown that the further-neighbor interaction between the nodal spins gives rise to three novel ground states with a translationally broken symmetry, but at the same time, it does not increases the total number of intermediate plateaus in a zero-temperature magnetization curve compared with the simplified model without this interaction term. The zero-field specific heat displays interesting thermal dependencies with a single- or double-peak structure.

Spin frustration of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg three-leg tube as an indispensable ground for thermal entanglement

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg three-leg tube composed of the Heisenberg spin triangles mutually coupled through the Ising inter-triangle interaction is exactly solved in a zero magnetic field. By making use of the local conservation for the total spin on each Heisenberg spin triangle the model can be rigorously mapped onto a classical composite spin-chain model, which is subsequently exactly treated through the transfer-matrix method. The ground-state phase diagram, correlation functions, concurrence, Bell function, entropy and specific heat are examined in detail. It is shown that the spin frustration represents an indispensable ground for a thermal entanglement, which is quantified with the help of concurrence. The specific heat displays diverse temperature dependences, which may include a sharp low-temperature peak mimicking a temperature-driven first-order phase transition. It is convincingly evidenced that this anomalous peak originates from massive thermal excitations from the doubly degenerate ground state towards an excited state with a high macroscopic degeneracy due to chiral degrees of freedom of the Heisenberg spin triangles.

A brief account of the Ising and Ising-like models: Mean-field, effective-field and exact results

The article provides a tutorial review on how to treat Ising models within mean-field (MF), effective-field (EF) and exact methods. MF solutions of the spin-1 Blume-Capel (BC) model and the mixed-spin Ising model demonstrate a change of continuous phase transitions to discontinuous ones at a tricritical point. A quantum phase transition of the spin-S Ising model driven by a transverse field is explored within MF method. EF theory is elaborated within a single- and two-spin cluster approach to demonstrate an efficiency of this approximate method. The long-standing problem of this method concerned with a self-consistent determination of the free energy is addressed. EF theory is adapted for the spin-1/2 Ising model, the spin-S BC model and the transverse Ising model. The particular attention is paid to continuous and discontinuous transitions. Exact results for the spin-1/2 Ising chain, spin-1 BC chain and mixed-spin Ising chain are obtained using the transfer-matrix method, the crucial steps of which are reviewed for a spin-1/2 Ising square lattice. Critical points of the spin-1/2 Ising model on several lattices are rigorously obtained with the help of dual, star-triangle and decoration-iteration transformations. Mapping transformations are adapted to obtain exact results for the mixed-spin Ising model on planar lattices. An increase in the coordination number of the mixed-spin Ising model on decorated planar lattices gives rise to reentrant transitions, while the critical temperature of the mixed-spin Ising model on a regular honeycomb lattice is always greater than that of two semi-regular archimedean lattices. The effect of selective site dilution of the mixed-spin Ising model on a honeycomb lattice upon phase diagrams is examined. The review affords a brief account of the Ising models solved within MF, EF and exact methods along with a few comments on their future applicability.

Effective low-energy description of almost Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain

We consider a geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain, which is an exactly solvable model when assuming part of the exchange interactions as Heisenberg ones and another part as Ising ones. A small $XY$ part is afterwards perturbatively added to the Ising couplings, which enabled us to derive an effective Hamiltonian describing the low-energy behavior of the modified but full quantum version of the initial model. The effective model is much simpler and free of frustration. It is shown that the $XY$ part added to the originally Ising interaction gives rise to the spin-liquid phase with continuously varying magnetization, which emerges in between the magnetization plateaus and is totally absent in the initial hybrid diamond-chain model. The elaborated approach can also be applied to other hybrid Ising-Heisenberg spin systems.
