A reduced unified continuum formulation for vascular fluid-structure interaction

We recently derived the unified continuum and variational multiscale formulation for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) using the Gibbs free energy. Restricting our attention to vascular FSI, we now reduce this arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation by adopting three assumptions for the vascular wall. The resulting reduced unified continuum formulation achieves monolithic FSI coupling in the Eulerian frame through a simple modification of the fluid boundary integral. While ostensibly similar to the semi-discrete formulation of the coupled momentum method, its underlying derivation does not rely on an assumption of a fictitious body force in the elastodynamics sub-problem and therefore represents a direct simplification of the ALE method. Uniform temporal discretization is performed via the generalized-$α$ scheme. In contrast to the predominant approach yielding only first-order accuracy for pressure, we collocate both pressure and velocity at the intermediate time step to achieve uniform second-order temporal accuracy. In conjunction with quadratic tetrahedral elements, our methodology offers higher-order temporal and spatial accuracy for quantities of clinical interest. Furthermore, without loss of consistency, a segregated predictor multi-corrector algorithm is developed to preserve the same block structure as for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the implicit solver's associated linear system. Block preconditioning of a monolithically coupled FSI system is therefore made possible for the first time. Compared to alternative preconditioners, our three-level nested block preconditioner, which improves representation of the Schur complement, demonstrates robust performance over a wide range of physical parameters. We present verification against Womersley's deformable wall theory and additionally develop practical modeling techniques for clinical applications.

A continuum and computational framework for viscoelastodynamics: finite deformation linear models

This work concerns the continuum basis and numerical formulation for deformable materials with viscous dissipative mechanisms. We derive a viscohyperelastic modeling framework based on fundamental thermomechanical principles. Since most large deformation problems exhibit the isochoric property, our modeling work is constructed based on the Gibbs free energy in order to develop a continuum theory using the pressure-primitive variables, which is known to be well-behaved in the incompressible limit. With a general theory presented, we focus on a family of free energies that leads to the so-called finite deformation linear model. Our derivation elucidates the origin of the evolution equations of that model, which was originally proposed heuristically. In our derivation, the thermodynamic inconsistency is clarified and rectified. We then discuss the relaxation property of the non-equilibrium stress in the thermodynamic equilibrium limit and its implication on the form of free energy. A modified version of the identical polymer chain model is then proposed, with a special case being the model proposed by G. Holzapfel and J. Simo. Based on the consistent modeling framework, a provably energy stable numerical scheme is constructed for incompressible viscohyperelasticity using inf-sup stable elements. In particular, we adopt a suite of smooth generalization of the Taylor-Hood element based on Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) for spatial discretization. The temporal discretization is performed via the generalized-alpha scheme. We present a suite of numerical results to corroborate the proposed numerical properties, including the nonlinear stability, robustness under large deformation, and the stress accuracy resolved by the higher-order elements.

A note on the accuracy of the generalized-$α$ scheme for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

We investigate the temporal accuracy of two generalized-$α$ schemes for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The conventional approach treats the pressure with the backward Euler method while discretizing the remainder of the Navier-Stokes equations with the generalized-$α$ method. We developed a suite of numerical codes using inf-sup stable higher-order non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) elements for spatial discretization. In doing so, we are able to achieve very high spatial accuracy and, furthermore, to perform temporal refinement without consideration of the stabilization terms, which can degenerate for small time steps. Numerical experiments suggest that only first-order accuracy is achieved, at least for the pressure, in this aforesaid approach. Evaluating the pressure at the intermediate time step recovers second-order accuracy, and the numerical implementation, in fact, becomes simpler. Therefore, although the pressure can be viewed as a Lagrange multiplier enforcing the incompressibility constraint, its temporal discretization is not independent and should be subject to the generalized-$α$ method in order to maintain second-order accuracy of the overall algorithm.

A unified continuum and variational multiscale formulation for fluids, solids, and fluid-structure interaction

We develop a unified continuum modeling framework for viscous fluids and hyperelastic solids using the Gibbs free energy as the thermodynamic potential. This framework naturally leads to a pressure primitive variable formulation for the continuum body, which is well-behaved in both compressible and incompressible regimes. Our derivation also provides a rational justification of the isochoric-volumetric additive split of free energies in nonlinear continuum mechanics. The variational multiscale analysis is performed for the continuum model to construct a foundation for numerical discretization. We first consider the continuum body instantiated as a hyperelastic material and develop a variational multiscale formulation for the hyper-elastodynamic problem. The generalized-alpha method is applied for temporal discretization. A segregated algorithm for the nonlinear solver is designed and carefully analyzed. Second, we apply the new formulation to construct a novel unified formulation for fluid-solid coupled problems. The variational multiscale formulation is utilized for spatial discretization in both fluid and solid subdomains. The generalized-alpha method is applied for the whole continuum body, and optimal high-frequency dissipation is achieved in both fluid and solid subproblems. A new predictor multi-corrector algorithm is developed based on the segregated algorithm to attain a good balance between robustness and efficiency. The efficacy of the new formulations is examined in several benchmark problems. The results indicate that the proposed modeling and numerical methodologies constitute a promising technology for biomedical and engineering applications, particularly those necessitating incompressible models.

Fluid-structure interaction modeling of blood flow in the pulmonary arteries using the unified continuum and variational multiscale formulation

In this work, we present a computational fluid-structure interaction (FSI) study for a healthy patient-specific pulmonary arterial tree using the unified continuum and variational multiscale (VMS) formulation we previously developed. The unified framework is particularly well-suited for FSI, as the fluid and solid sub-problems are addressed in essentially the same manner and can thus be uniformly integrated in time with the generalized-$α$ method. In addition, the VMS formulation provides a mechanism for large-eddy simulation in the fluid sub-problem and pressure stabilization in the solid sub-problem. The FSI problem is solved in a quasi-direct approach, in which the pressure and velocity in the unified continuum body are first solved, and the solid displacement is then obtained via a segregated algorithm and prescribed as a boundary condition for the mesh motion. Results of the pulmonary arterial FSI simulation are presented and compared against those of a rigid wall simulation.

Non-Cooperative Game Theory Based Rate Adaptation for Dynamic Video Streaming over HTTP

Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) has demonstrated to be an emerging and promising multimedia streaming technique, owing to its capability of dealing with the variability of networks. Rate adaptation mechanism, a challenging and open issue, plays an important role in DASH based systems since it affects Quality of Experience (QoE) of users, network utilization, etc. In this paper, based on non-cooperative game theory, we propose a novel algorithm to optimally allocate the limited export bandwidth of the server to multi-users to maximize their QoE with fairness guaranteed. The proposed algorithm is proxy-free. Specifically, a novel user QoE model is derived by taking a variety of factors into account, like the received video quality, the reference buffer length, and user accumulated buffer lengths, etc. Then, the bandwidth competing problem is formulated as a non-cooperation game with the existence of Nash Equilibrium that is theoretically proven. Finally, a distributed iterative algorithm with stability analysis is proposed to find the Nash Equilibrium. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, extensive experimental results in terms of both simulated and realistic networking scenarios demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can produce higher QoE, and the actual buffer lengths of all users keep nearly optimal states, i.e., moving around the reference buffer all the time. Besides, the proposed algorithm produces no playback interruption.

A Comprehensive Study and Comparison of Core Technologies for MPEG 3D Point Cloud Compression

Point cloud based 3D visual representation is becoming popular due to its ability to exhibit the real world in a more comprehensive and immersive way. However, under a limited network bandwidth, it is very challenging to communicate this kind of media due to its huge data volume. Therefore, the MPEG have launched the standardization for point cloud compression (PCC), and proposed three model categories, i.e., TMC1, TMC2, and TMC3. Because the 3D geometry compression methods of TMC1 and TMC3 are similar, TMC1 and TMC3 are further merged into a new platform namely TMC13. In this paper, we first introduce some basic technologies that are usually used in 3D point cloud compression, then review the encoder architectures of these test models in detail, and finally analyze their rate distortion performance as well as complexity quantitatively for different cases (i.e., lossless geometry and lossless color, lossless geometry and lossy color, lossy geometry and lossy color) by using 16 benchmark 3D point clouds that are recommended by MPEG. Experimental results demonstrate that the coding efficiency of TMC2 is the best on average (especially for lossy geometry and lossy color compression) for dense point clouds while TMC13 achieves the optimal coding performance for sparse and noisy point clouds with lower time complexity.

The nested block preconditioning technique for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with emphasis on hemodynamic simulations

We develop a novel iterative solution method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with boundary conditions coupled with reduced models. The iterative algorithm is designed based on the variational multiscale formulation and the generalized-$α$ scheme. The spatiotemporal discretization leads to a block structure of the resulting consistent tangent matrix in the Newton-Raphson procedure. As a generalization of the conventional block preconditioners, a three-level nested block preconditioner is introduced to attain a better representation of the Schur complement, which plays a key role in the overall algorithm robustness and efficiency. This approach provides a flexible, algorithmic way to handle the Schur complement for problems involving multiscale and multiphysics coupling. The solution method is implemented and benchmarked against experimental data from the nozzle challenge problem issued by the US Food and Drug Administration. The robustness, efficiency, and parallel scalability of the proposed technique are then examined in several settings, including moderately high Reynolds number flows and physiological flows with strong resistance effect due to coupled downstream vasculature models. Two patient-specific hemodynamic simulations, covering systemic and pulmonary flows, are performed to further corroborate the efficacy of the proposed methodology.

Secrecy Analysis and Learning-based Optimization of Cooperative NOMA SWIPT Systems

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered to be one of the best candidates for future networks due to its ability to serve multiple users using the same resource block. Although early studies have focused on transmission reliability and energy efficiency, recent works are considering cooperation among the nodes. The cooperative NOMA techniques allow the user with a better channel (near user) to act as a relay between the source and the user experiencing poor channel (far user). This paper considers the link security aspect of energy harvesting cooperative NOMA users. In particular, the near user applies the decode-and-forward (DF) protocol for relaying the message of the source node to the far user in the presence of an eavesdropper. Moreover, we consider that all the devices use power-splitting architecture for energy harvesting and information decoding. We derive the analytical expression of intercept probability. Next, we employ deep learning based optimization to find the optimal power allocation factor. The results show the robustness and superiority of deep learning optimization over conventional iterative search algorithm.

An energy-stable mixed formulation for isogeometric analysis of incompressible hyper-elastodynamics

We develop a mixed formulation for incompressible hyper-elastodynamics based on a continuum modeling framework recently developed and smooth generalizations of the Taylor-Hood element based on non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS). This continuum formulation draws a link between computational fluid dynamics and computational solid dynamics. This link inspires an energy stability estimate for the spatial discretization, which favorably distinguishes the formulation from the conventional mixed formulations for finite elasticity. The inf-sup condition is utilized to provide a bound for the pressure field. The generalized-$α$ method is applied for temporal discretization, and a nested block preconditioner is invoked for the solution procedure. The inf-sup stability for different pairs of NURBS elements is elucidated through numerical assessment. The convergence rate of the proposed formulation with various combinations of mixed elements is examined by the manufactured solution method. The numerical scheme is also examined under compressive and tensile loads for isotropic and anisotropic hyperelastic materials. Finally, a suite of dynamic problems is numerically studied to corroborate the stability and conservation properties.

Bare Metal Wires as Open Waveguides, with Applications to 5G

We study an old but unconventional waveguiding technique based on the use of overhead bare metal Medium Voltage (MV) power lines as open waveguides and not as transmission lines. This technique can be used in support of 5G applications such as backhauling and broadband access in the mmW frequency range or above. Although the analysis of open waveguides dates back a century or more, very few communications oriented papers are available in the literature and there is today no commonly agreed upon channel model. This paper offers a first step in covering this gap by first solving numerically the characteristic equation derived from Maxwell equations, then deriving an analytical expression for the transfer function, and finally reporting for the first time capacity values for bare metal open waveguides. A channel capacity of 1 Tbps over 100 m can be achieved using a single overhead Medium Voltage power line, 1 W of total transmitted power, and the 1-100 GHz band.

A robust and efficient iterative method for hyper-elastodynamics with nested block preconditioning

We develop a robust and efficient iterative method for hyper-elastodynamics based on a novel continuum formulation recently developed. The numerical scheme is constructed based on the variational multiscale formulation and the generalized-$α$ method. Within the nonlinear solution procedure, a block factorization is performed for the consistent tangent matrix to decouple the kinematics from the balance laws. Within the linear solution procedure, another block factorization is performed to decouple the mass balance equation from the linear momentum balance equations. A nested block preconditioning technique is proposed to combine the Schur complement reduction approach with the fully coupled approach. This preconditioning technique, together with the Krylov subspace method, constitutes a novel iterative method for solving hyper-elastodynamics. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed preconditioning technique by comparing with the SIMPLE preconditioner and the one-level domain decomposition preconditioner. Two representative examples are studied: the compression of an isotropic hyperelastic cube and the tensile test of a fully-incompressible anisotropic hyperelastic arterial wall model. The robustness with respect to material properties and the parallel performance of the preconditioner are examined.

Thermal convection in the van der Waals fluid

In this work, the van der Waals fluid model, a diffuse-interface model for liquid-vapor two-phase flows, is numerically investigated. The thermodynamic properties of the van der Waals fluid are first studied. Dimensional analysis is performed to identify the control parameters for the system. An entropy-stable numerical scheme and isogeometric analysis are utilized to discretize the governing equations for numerical simulations. The steady state solution at low Rayleigh number is presented, demonstrating the capability of the model in describing liquid-vapor phase transitions. Next, two-dimensional nucleate and film boiling are simulated, showing the applicability of the model in different regimes of boiling. In the last, the heat transport property of the van der Waals model is numerically investigated. The scaling law for the Nusselt number with respect to the Rayleigh number in the van der Waals model is obtained by performing a suite of high-resolution simulations.

Multiple Watermarking Algorithm Based on Spread Transform Dither Modulation

Multiple watermarking technique, embedding several watermarks in one carrier, has enabled many interesting applications. In this study, a novel multiple watermarking algorithm is proposed based on the spirit of spread transform dither modulation (STDM). It can embed multiple watermarks into the same region and the same transform domain of one image; meanwhile, the embedded watermarks can be extracted independently and blindly in the detector without any interference. Furthermore, to improve the fidelity of the watermarked image, the properties of the dither modulation quantizer and the proposed multiple watermarks embedding strategy are investigated, and two practical optimization methods are proposed. Finally, to enhance the application flexibility, an extension of the proposed algorithm is proposed which can sequentially embeds different watermarks into one image during each stage of its circulation. Compared with the pioneering multiple watermarking algorithms, the proposed one owns more flexibility in practical application and is more robust against distortion due to basic operations such as random noise, JPEG compression and volumetric scaling.

Self-Interference Suppression for the Full-Duplex Wireless Communication with Large-Scale Antenna

In this letter, we proposed a shared-antenna full-duplex massive MIMO model for the multiuser MIMO system. This model exploits a single antenna array at the base station (BS) to transmit and receive the signals simultaneously. It has the merits of both the full-duplex system and the time-division duplex (TDD) massive MIMO system, i.e., the high spectral efficiency and the channel reciprocity. We focus on the zero-forcing (ZF) and the maximal-ratio transmission/maximal-ratio combining (MRT/MRC) linear processing methods, which are commonly used in the massive MIMO system. As the main finding, we prove that the self-interference (SI) in a shared-antenna full-duplex massive MU-MIMO system can be suppressed in the completely dependent uplink and downlink channels when the number of antennas becomes large enough.

Gradient-based adaptive interpolation in super-resolution image restoration

This paper presents a super-resolution method based on gradient-based adaptive interpolation. In this method, in addition to considering the distance between the interpolated pixel and the neighboring valid pixel, the interpolation coefficients take the local gradient of the original image into account. The smaller the local gradient of a pixel is, the more influence it should have on the interpolated pixel. And the interpolated high resolution image is finally deblurred by the application of wiener filter. Experimental results show that our proposed method not only substantially improves the subjective and objective quality of restored images, especially enhances edges, but also is robust to the registration error and has low computational complexity.
