Penalized Empirical Likelihood for Doubly Robust Causal Inference under Contamination in High Dimensions

We propose a doubly robust estimator for the average treatment effect in high dimensional low sample size observational studies, where contamination and model misspecification pose serious inferential challenges. The estimator combines bounded influence estimating equations for outcome modeling with covariate balancing propensity scores for treatment assignment, embedded within a penalized empirical likelihood framework using nonconvex regularization. It satisfies the oracle property by jointly achieving consistency under partial model correct ness, selection consistency, robustness to contamination, and asymptotic normality. For uncertainty quantification, we derive a finite sample confidence interval using cumulant generating functions and influence function corrections, avoiding reliance on asymptotic approximations. Simulation studies and applications to gene expression datasets (Golub and Khan) demonstrate superior performance in bias, error metrics, and interval calibration, highlighting the method robustness and inferential validity in HDLSS regimes. One notable aspect is that even in the absence of contamination, the proposed estimator and its confidence interval remain efficient compared to those of competing models.

An unusual continuous paramagnetic-limited superconducting phase transition in 2D NbSe$_2$

Time reversal and spatial inversion are two key symmetries for conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductivity. Breaking inversion symmetry can lead to mixed-parity Cooper pairing and unconventional superconducting properties. Two-dimensional (2D) NbSe$_2$ has emerged as a new non-centrosymmetric superconductor with the unique out-of-plane or Ising spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we report the observation of an unusual continuous paramagnetic-limited superconductor-normal metal transition in 2D NbSe$_2$. Using tunneling spectroscopy under high in-plane magnetic fields, we observe a continuous closing of the superconducting gap at the upper critical field at low temperatures, in stark contrast to the abrupt first-order transition observed in BCS thin film superconductors. The paramagnetic-limited continuous transition arises from a large spin susceptibility of the superconducting phase due to the Ising SOC. The result is further supported by self-consistent mean-field calculations based on the ab initio band structure of 2D NbSe$_2$. Our findings establish 2D NbSe$_2$ as a promising platform for exploring novel spin-dependent superconducting phenomena and device concepts, such as equal-spin Andreev reflection and topological superconductivity.

Evolution of Weyl orbit and quantum Hall effect in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2

Owing to the coupling between open Fermi arcs on opposite surfaces, topological Dirac semimetals exhibit a new type of cyclotron orbit in the surface states known as Weyl orbit. Here, by lowering the carrier density in Cd3As2 nanoplates, we observe a crossover from multiple- to single-frequency Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations when subjected to out-of-plane magnetic field, indicating the dominant role of surface transport. With the increase of magnetic field, the SdH oscillations further develop into quantum Hall state with non-vanishing longitudinal resistance. By tracking the oscillation frequency and Hall plateau, we observe a Zeeman-related splitting and extract the Landau level index as well as sub-band number. Different from conventional two-dimensional systems, this unique quantum Hall effect may be related to the quantized version of Weyl orbits. Our results call for further investigations into the exotic quantum Hall states in the low-dimensional structure of topological semimetals.

Calorimetric Measurements of Magnetic-Field-Induced Inhomogeneous Superconductivity Above The Paramagnetic Limit

We report the first magneto-caloric and calorimetric observations of a magnetic-field-induced phase transition within a superconducting state to the long-sought exotic "FFLO" superconducting state first predicted over 50 years ago. Through the combination of bulk thermodynamic calorimetric and magnetocaloric measurements in the organic superconductor $κ$ - (BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$, as a function of temperature, magnetic field strength, and magnetic field orientation, we establish for the first time that this field-induced first-order phase transition at the paramagnetic limit $H_p$ for traditional superconductivity is to a higher entropy superconducting phase uniquely characteristic of the FFLO state. We also establish that this high-field superconducting state displays the bulk paramagnetic ordering of spin domains required of the FFLO state. These results rule out the alternate possibility of spin-density wave (SDW) ordering in the high field superconducting phase. The phase diagram determined from our measurements --- including the observation of a phase transition into the FFLO phase at $H_p$ --- is in good agreement with recent NMR results and our own earlier tunnel-diode magnetic penetration depth experiments, but is in disagreement with the only previous calorimetric report.

Spin Freezing in The Frustrated Disordered Quantum Magnet Ba$_{3}$(Mn$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{8}$

Ba$_3$Mn$_2$O$_8$ is a geometrically frustrated spin dimer compound. We investigate the effect of site disorder on the zero field phase diagram of this material by considering the solid solution Ba$_{3}$(Mn$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{8}$, where nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ ions partially substitute magnetic Mn$^{5+}$ ions. This substitution results in unpaired $S=1$ moments for half-substituted dimers, which are ungapped and therefore susceptible to types of magnetic order not present in the parent compound. AC susceptibility measurements of compositions between $x=0.046$ and $x=0.84$ show a sharp frequency- and composition-dependent kink at temperatures below 210mK, suggesting that unpaired spins form a spin glass. The case for a glassy state is made clearer by the absence of any sharp features in the specific heat. However, Ba$_{3}$(Mn$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$)$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is not a paradigmatic spin glass. Whereas both the freezing temperature and the Weiss temperature (determined from susceptibility above 1K) vary strongly as a function of composition, the heat capacity per unpaired spin is found to be insensitive (above the glass transition) to the density of unpaired spins for the broad regime $0.18\leq x \leq 0.84$. This surprising result is consistent with a scenario in which nearest-neighbor unpaired spins form local, possibly fluctuating, spin-singlets prior to the eventual spin freezing. The spin glass state is only found for temperatures below the energy scale of single-ion anisotropy, suggestive this plays a significant role in determining the eventual ground state. Possible ground states in the "dilute" limit ($x < 0.04$ and $x > 0.9$) are also discussed.

Antiferromagnetic Ordering in MnF(salen)

Antiferromagnetic order at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 23$ K has been identified in Mn(III)F(salen), salen = H$_{14}$C$_{16}$N$_2$O$_2$, an $S = 2$ linear-chain system. Using single crystals, specific heat studies performed in magnetic fields up to 9 T revealed the presence of a field-independent cusp at the same temperature where $^1$H NMR studies conducted at 42 MHz observed dramatic changes in the spin-lattice relaxation time, $T_1$, and in the linewidths. Neutron powder diffraction performed on a randomly-oriented, as-grown, deuterated (12 of 14 H replaced by d) sample of 2.2 g at 10 K and 100 K did not resolve the magnetic ordering, while low-field (less than 0.1 T) magnetic susceptibility studies of single crystals and randomly-arranged microcrystalline samples reveal subtle features associated with the transition. Ensemble these data suggest a magnetic signature previously detected at 3.8 T for temperatures below nominally 500 mK is a spin-flop field of small net moments arising from alternating subsets of three Mn spins along the chains.

Evidence of Ising pairing in superconducting NbSe$_2$ atomic layers

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides with strong spin-orbit interactions and valley-dependent Berry curvature effects have attracted tremendous recent interests. Although novel single-particle and excitonic phenomena related to spin-valley coupling have been extensively studied, effects of spin-momentum locking on collective quantum phenomena remain unexplored. Here we report an observation of superconducting monolayer NbSe$_2$ with an in-plane upper critical field over six times of the Pauli paramagnetic limit by magneto-transport measurements. The effect can be understood in terms of the competing Zeeman effect and large intrinsic spin-orbit interactions in non-centrosymmetric NbSe$_2$ monolayers, where the electronic spin is locked to the out-of-plane direction. Our results provide a strong evidence of unconventional Ising pairing protected by spin-momentum locking and open up a new avenue for studies of non-centrosymmetric superconductivity with unique spin and valley degrees of freedom in the exact two-dimensional limit.

Miniature Dilatometer Based upon an AFM Piezocantilever

We report on the development of a sensitive dilatometer based upon a AFM piezocantilever. This dilatometer has been tested at temperatures down to 25 mK and in magnetic fields up to 16 T. The layered heavy fermion superconductor $CeCoIn_5$ and its non-magnetic analog $LaRhIn_5$ have been measured to demonstrate its use in detecting phase transitions and quantum oscillations. In addition, using this dilatometer, a simultaneous multi-axis dilation measurement has been done. This compact dilatometer has many advantages such as its ability to measure very small samples with lengths at sub-mm levels, low temperature and field dependence, ability to rotate, and works well irrespective of being in a changing liquid or gas environment (i.e. within a flow cryostat or mixing chamber).

ESR Study of (C_5H_{12}N)_2CuBr_4

ESR studies at 9.27, 95.4, and 289.7 GHz have been performed on (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ down to 3.7 K. The 9.27 GHz data were acquired with a single crystal and do not indicate the presence of any structural transitions. The high frequency data were collected with a polycrystalline sample and resolved two absorbances, consistent with two crystallographic orientations of the magnetic sites and with earlier ESR studies performed at 300 K. Below $B_{C1}=6.6$ T, our data confirm the presence of a spin singlet ground state.
