Huizhou Hadron Spectrometer -- a Proposed High-rate Experimental Setup at the High Intensity Heavy-ion Accelerator Facility

The High-Intensity Heavy-Ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF), currently under construction in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, China, is projected to be completed by 2025. This facility will be capable of producing proton and heavy-ion beams with energies reaching several GeV, thereby offering a versatile platform for advanced fundamental physics research. Key scientific objectives include exploring physics beyond the Standard Model through the search for novel particles and interactions, testing fundamental symmetries, investigating exotic hadronic states such as di-baryons, pentaquark states and multi-strange hypernuclei, conducting precise measurements of hadron and hypernucleus properties, and probing the phase boundary and critical point of nuclear matter. To facilitate these investigations, we propose the development of a dedicated experimental apparatus at HIAF - the Huizhou Hadron Spectrometer (HHaS). This paper presents the conceptual design of HHaS, comprising a solenoid magnet, a five-dimensional silicon pixel tracker, a Low-Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) for time-of-flight measurements, and a Cherenkov-scintillation dual-readout electromagnetic calorimeter. The design anticipates an unprecedented event rate of 1-100 MHz, extensive particle acceptance, a track momentum resolution at 1% level, an electromagnetic energy resolution of ~3% @ 1 GeV and multi-particle identification capabilities. Such capabilities position HHaS as a powerful instrument for advancing experimental studies in particle and nuclear physics. The successful realization of HHaS is expected to significantly bolster the development of medium- and high-energy physics research within China.

Violation of the elliptic flow scaling of $f_0(980)$ in p-Pb collisions at the LHC

We investigate the production and elliptic flow of the $f_0(980)$ in high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV using a hadronic coalescence model with the $K$ and $\bar K$ phase-space distributions provided by the Hydro-Coal-Frag hybrid model. Our results, which agree with the ALICE and CMS measurements, support the $K\bar K$ molecular interpretation of the $f_0(980)$ structure and show, however, a breakdown of the simple number-of-constituent (NC) scaling of its elliptic flow. The latter is in contrast to the deuteron elliptic flow, which exhibits a significantly better NC scaling when the same coalescence width parameter is used.

Probing the structure of $f_{0}(980)$ from the elliptic flow in p-Pb collisions at the LHC

The $f_{0}(980)$ is a light scalar meson whose internal structure remains under debate and investigation. Assuming that the $f_0(980)$ is a $K\bar K$ molecule that can only survive at the kinetic freeze-out of the evolving bulk matter, we implement the coalescence model to study its transverse momentum ($p_T$) spectra and elliptic flow ($v_2$) in high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV. Using the well-tuned kaon phase-space distributions from the Hydro-Coal-Frag model, our $K\bar{K}$ coalescence calculations with reasonable values for the $f_0(980)$ radius successfully reproduce the elliptic flow measured by CMS over the range $0 < p_{T} < 12$ GeV and also agree with the $p_T$-spectra from ALICE. These results in heavy ion collisions are consistent with the $K\bar K$ molecular picture of the $f_0(980)$. We also find that the number-of-constituent scaling of $v_2$ for the $f_0(980)$ is violated in p-Pb collisions at the LHC because most $f_0(980)$ are produced from the coalescence of kaons that have different momenta. Our study demonstrates the necessity of realistic coalescence model calculations and also explains why the CMS interpretation of the $f_0(980)$ as an ordinary $q\bar q$ meson is no longer valid by interpreting the measured $v_2$ with a simple scaling formula based on the assumption of equal momentum coalescence. The investigation also provides a novel way to explore the internal structure of light exotic hadrons that can be abundantly produced in relativistic heavy and/or light ion collisions.

Shedding light on the nature of $ϕ(2170)$ state in the $e^+e^- \to ϕπ^+π^-$ reaction

We investigate the production of $ϕ(2170)$ state in the $e^+e^- \to ϕπ^+π^-$ reaction with the effective Lagrangian approach. In addition to the tree level contributions from the $ϕ(1680)$ meson and a possible X(1750) state, we consider also the $K_1$-$K$-$\bar{K}$ intermediate state process from the perspective of triangular singularity. Based on the one-photon exchange approximation, a pair of $K_1 \bar{K}$ mesons was firstly produced, and then the $K_1$ meson subsequently decays into $ϕ$ and $K$, and the $K\bar{K}$ pair produce the $π^+ π^-$ through the final state interactions, in which the scalar meson $f_0(980)$ is dynamically generated. We show that the inclusion of the triangle loop diagrams leads to a good description of the new BESIII measurements, especially for the structure of $ϕ(2170)$. This provides a novel interpretation of the $ϕ(2170)$ state, offering new insights into its fundamental nature which is still unclear. Furthermore, it is found that these measurements on the $e^+e^- \to ϕπ^+π^-$ reaction can be used to determine some of the properties of two $K_1$ mesons with masses around 1610 MeV and 1895 MeV, which are crucial to reproduce the experimental data.

Revisiting the $Λ_c^+\to Ληπ^+$ and the roles of intermediate resonances

In this paper, we first review the theoretical and experimental studies of the process $Λ_c^+ \to π^+ ηΛ$. Motivated by the recent BESIII and Belle measurements, we have conducted a theoretical study of the process $Λ_c^+ \to π^+ ηΛ$, where the $a_0(980)$ and $Λ(1670)$ resonances are dynamically generated from the $S$-wave meson meson and meson baryon interaction, respectively. Our results give a reasonable description of the invariant mass distributions, which implies that the spin flip contribution in the $Σ(1385)$ excitation plays an important role.

The electromagnetic form factors of $Σ$ and $Σ^0 \to Λ$ transition in the timelike region

We investigate the $e^+e^-\to Σ\barΣ$ and $e^+e^-\to Λ\barΣ^0$ reactions within the extended vector meson dominance model. In addition to the ground state mesons $ρ$ and $ω$, we consider the contributions of the excited states $ρ(3D)$, $ω(3D)$, $ϕ(3D)$, and $ρ(6D)$. It is found that the current experimental data on the $Σ$ electromagnetic form factors in timelike region can be well reproduced. And the $ϕ(3D)$ resonance is essential to the near threshold enhancement of the cross section for the $e^+e^-\to Σ\barΣ$ reaction. Furthermore, in the $e^+e^-\to Λ\barΣ^0$ reaction, the $ρ(3D)$ is important to get a good fit for the experimental results.

Bremsstrahlung emission accompanying ternary fission of \isotope[252]{Cf}

\textbf{Background} In ternary fission, bremsstrahlung photons are emitted but those have never been studied yet theoretically and experimentally. In other reactions, bremsstrahlung has been studied for a long time. \textbf{Purpose} To clarify which new information about ternary fission can be obtained from study of bremsstrahlung emission accompanying the ternary fission of \isotope[252]{Cf}. \textbf{Methods} A new quantum model of emission of bremsstrahlung photons accompanying ternary fission of heavy nuclei with $α$-particle as light charged particle is developed. The model takes into account geometry and dynamics of ternary fission. \textbf{Results} We present the theoretical results on the bremsstrahlung emission in the ternary fission of the \isotope[252]{Cf} nucleus. High sensitivity of the bremsstrahlung spectra is established by the model concerning to the following aspects of the ternary fission, and the theoretical calcualtions are in agreement with the preliminary experimental data. It is found that: (a) Photons are emitted with highest intensity in case of perpendicular motion of the $α$\,particle concerning to fission axis; (b) Relative motion between heavy fragments reinforces significantly bremsstrahlung, leaving of $α$-particle concerning to system of heavy fragments is less important; (c) Relative motion between two heavy fragments is faster, bremsstrahlung is more intensive. \textbf{Conclusions} Theoretical study of bremsstrahlung in ternary fission of the \isotope[252]{Cf} nucleus shows high sensitivity of bremsstrahlung spectra on the geometry and dynamics of ternary fission process. It is expected that new information can be obtained by the model when new experimental measurements of bremsstrahlung in ternary fission of the \isotope[252]{Cf} nucleus are available.

Manifestation of quark effects in nuclei via bremsstrahlung analysis in the proton-nucleus scattering

\textbf{Background} (1) The incoherent emission of photons is dominant comparing to coherent one in proton-nucleus scattering. The incoherent bremsstrahlung is very sensitive to the magnetic moments of nucleons in nuclei. (2) According to the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, the nucleon magnetic moments in nuclei are enhanced relative to those in vacuum, originating from the quark structure of nucleons. \textbf{Purpose} Investigate possibilities of observing quark effects in nuclei by the analysis of bremsstrahlung in nuclear reactions. \textbf{Methods} Analyse the bremsstrahlung cross sections with established model in proton-nucleus scattering, by extending with inclusion of in-medium modified nucleon magnetic moments in nuclei by the QMC model. \textbf{Results} (1) After calibrating the model without the quark effects for experimental data (TAPS Collaboration data for $p + \isotope[197]{Au}$), we calculate the cross sections and observe the slight difference between the spectra for models with and without quark effects. Such result is found for the first time, confirming possibilities of observing the quark effects in the spectra of bremsstrahlung. (2) As found, quark effects are not enough to be observed in middle and heavy nuclei, as they have dominant incoherent contributions. (3) \isotope[18]{C} has minimal incoherent contribution concerning other carbon isotopes, where the quark effects should be minimal. In ratios between the spectra for \isotope[18]{C} and \isotope[12]{C} with and without the quark effects the difference is clearly observed. \textbf{Conclusions} We establish the new physical observable for the quark effects in nuclei in the bremsstrahlung accompanied in the nuclear reactions, which can be measured. The present suggestion is for the first time in both theoretically and experimentally to study the quark effects in nuclei via the bremsstrahlung.

Determination of the binding and $DK$ probability of the $D^{*}_{s0}(2317)$ from the $(\bar{D}\bar K)^-$ mass distributions in $Λ_{b}\to Λ_{c} (\bar{D}\bar K)^-$ decays

We study the $Λ_{b}\toΛ_{c}\bar{D}^{0}K^{-}$ and $Λ_{b}\to Λ_{c}D^{-}\bar{K}^{0}$ decays which proceed via a Cabibbo and $N_c$ favored process of external emission, and we determine the $\bar{D}^{0}K^{-}$ and $D^{-}\bar{K}^{0}$ mass distributions close to the $\bar{D} \bar{K}$ threshold. For this, we use the tree level contribution plus the rescattering of the meson-meson components, using the extension of the local hidden gauge approach to the charm sector that produces the $D^*_{s0}(2317)$ resonance. We observe a large enhancement of the mass distributions close to threshold due to the presence of this resonance below threshold. Next we undertake the inverse problem of extracting the maximum information on the interaction of the $\bar{D} \bar{K}$ channels from these distributions, and using the resampling method we find that from these data one can obtain precise values of the scattering lengths and effective ranges, the existence of an $I=0$ bound state with a precision of about $4 \;\rm MeV$ in the mass, plus the $\bar{D} \bar{K}$ molecular probability of this state with reasonable precision. Given the fact that the $Λ_{b}\toΛ_{c}\bar{D}^{0}K^{-}$ decay is already measured by the LHCb collaboration, it is expected that in the next runs with more statistics of the decay, these mass distributions can be measured with precision and the method proposed here can be used to determine the nature of the $D^*_{s0}(2317)$, which is still an issue of debate.

Studying the $KΛ$ strong interaction with femtoscopic correlation functions and the $N^*(1535)$

We investigate the $K Λ$ strong interaction dynamics around the energy region of $N^*(1535)$ resonance through femtoscopic correlation functions within the Koonin-Pratt formalism, where coupled-channel effects of $πN$, $KΛ$, $K Σ$ and $ηN$ channels are taken into account, by means of which the $N^*(1535)$ resonance can be dynamically generated in the chiral unitary approach. Two-body scattering amplitudes are calculated using the chiral unitary approach, and the corresponding wave functions and correlation functions are obtained. Our analysis shows that the $πN$ channel becomes important to the $K^+Λ$ correlation function through coupled channel effects, even if its mass threshold is far from the energy region of the $N^*(1535)$. Furthermore, with the picture that the $N^*(1535)$ is a dynamically generated state, we can get a good reproduction of the experimental data on the $K^+Λ$ correlation function. This work establishes femtoscopic correlation functions as a sensitive probe for coupled-channel dynamics and validates the Koonin-Pratt framework in multi-channel hadronic systems, offering critical insights into some exotic hadron states and strong interaction mechanisms.

Electromagnetic form factors of $Ω^-$ with the meson cloud in the spacelike and timelike regions

We present comprehensive calculations of the electromagnetic form factors, including the charge, magnetic-dipole, electric-quadrupole and magnetic-octupole form factors, of the $Ω^-$ in the spacelike region using the quark-diquark approach, incorporating the effect of the meson cloud. The obtained magnetic moment is in agreement with the experimental measurement and the electromagnetic radii are comparable with other model calculations. It is found that the meson cloud effect remains almost unchanged as the energy becomes high and this feature implies that the meson cloud should be considered in all the energy region. Moreover, the asymptotic relations allow us to extend the electromagnetic form factors from the spacelike region to the timelike region, and then the effective form factor is almost identical with the data from CLEO and BESIII. Finally, polarization properties of the final state $Ω^-$ in the $e^+ e^- \rightarrow Ω^- \barΩ^+$ process with the unpolarized initial states are also investigated.

Investigation of the baryon time-like electromagnetic form factors in the electron-positron annihilation reactions

Based on the experimental measurements of the electron-positron annihilation reactions into a baryon ($B$) and anti-baryon ($\bar{B}$) pair, the electromagnetic form factors of hyperons in the time-like region can be investigated within the vector meson dominance model. The theoretical model parameters are determined by fitting them to the total cross sections of the process $e^+e^-\to B \bar{B}$, and it is found that the current experimental data on the baryon electromagnetic form factors in the time-like region can be well reproduced. In addition to the total cross sections, the electromagnetic form factors $G_E$ and $G_M$, and the charge radii of those baryons are also estimated, which are in agreement with the experimental data. On the other hand, we have also investigated the nonmonotonic behavior of the time-like baryon electromagnetic form factors, and it is found that the previously proposed periodic behaviour of the nucleon time-like electromagnetic form factor is not confirmed. However, we do observe the nonmonotonic structures in the line shape of the baryon effective form factors or the ratio $|G_E/G_M|$ for the charmed baryon $Λ^+_c$. These features can be naturally explained by incorporating contributions from excited vector states. More precise measurements of the $e^+e^-\to B \bar{B}$ reaction offer a valuable opportunity to probe the properties of excited vector states, which are at present poorly known. Additionally, comprehensive theoretical and experimental studies of baryon timelike electromagnetic form factors can provide critical insights into the underlying mechanisms of electron-positron annihilation processes.

Strong decays of $a_0$, $f_0$, $f_2$, and $K^*_2$ resonances as dynamically generated states of two vector mesons

The two-body strong decays of the $f_0(1500)$, $f_0(1710)$, $a_0(1710)$, $f_2(1270)$, $f_2'(1525)$, and $K_2^*(1430)$ resonances are investigated, assuming them as dynamically generated states of two vector mesons via $s$-wave interactions. The partial decay widths of all the possible two-body pseudoscalar meson-pseudoscalar meson final states are calculated considering the triangular diagrams. It is found that the ratios of branching fractions are similar to the previous results for most channels, which were obtained by using the real-axis method and considering the box diagrams. However, there are also differences. In addition, our focus is on the partial decay widths. More precise experimental measurements are needed to test the model calculations and determine the nature of these scalar and tensor mesons. It is anticipated that the BES\uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral3}, Belle\uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral2} and LHCb collaborations will conduct these measurements in the future.

Constraining the hidden-charm pentaquark predictions and discriminating the $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$ spins through the effective range expansion

The Weinberg compositeness criterion dictates that a pure shallow bound state is characterized by a large scattering length $a_0\gg\mathcal{O}(1/β)$ and a positive effective range $r_0$ that naturally scales to the size of $\mathcal{O}(1/β)$, where $1/β$ signifies the interaction range. In constructing the contact-range effective field theory (EFT) up to the next-to-leading order to describe the pentaquarks $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$, and $P_c(4457)$ observed by the LHCb collaboration in 2019, we match the effective range $r_0$ at single-channel situation for these pentaquarks with the low-energy couplings within the EFT framework. Three different schemes are used to connect the couplings with the effective range. We find positive effective ranges $r_0$ of the natural size of $\mathcal{O}(1/β)$ for the spin configurations $J^P=\frac{3}{2}^-$ for $P_c(4440)$ and $J^P=\frac{1}{2}^-$ for $P_c(4457)$ within the molecular $\bar{D}^* Σ_c$ description. Additionally, predictions from the power counting for low-energy couplings or Wilsonian coefficients suggest that, under heavy quark spin symmetry, the broad $P_c(4380)$ resonance, discovered by the LHCb collaboration in 2015, when considered as part of the single-channel $\bar{D}^{(*)} Σ_c^{(*)}$ molecular system alongside $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$, and $P_c(4457)$, has a mass of approximately $4376$ $\rm{MeV}$.

Roles of $Δ(1232)$, $N^*(1520)$, and $N^*(1650)$ resonances in $γp\to π^0 π^0 p$ reaction within an effective Lagrangian approach

Roles of the $Δ(1232)$, ${N}^{*}(1520)$, and ${N}^{*}(1650)$ resonances in the $γp\to{π}^{0}{π}^{0}p $ reaction near threshold is investigated within an effective Lagrangian approach. We have calculated the differential cross sections of the $γp\to{π}^{0}{π}^{0}p$ reaction by including the contributions from the $Δ(1232)$, ${N}^{*}(1520)$, and ${N}^{*}(1650)$ intermediate states decaying into $π^0 p$ via the $s$-channel nucleon pole and $t$-channel $ρ$ exchange, and found that the current experimental measurements can be well reproduced. The production of $Δ(1232)$ is mainly from the mechanism of the $s$-channel nucleon pole, while the ${N}^{*}(1520)$ and ${N}^{*}(1650)$ are produced from the mechanism of the $t$-channel $ρ$ exchange. It is expected that more experimental data on the $γp \to π^0 π^0 p$ reaction can be used to explore the properties of the low-lying excited baryon states and also the scalar $f_0(500)$ and $f_0(980)$ mesons.

The electromagnetic form factors and spin polarization of $Λ_c^+$ in the process $e^+ e^- \to Λ^+_c \barΛ^-_c$

The total cross sections of the process $e^+ e^-\to Λ_c^+ \barΛ_c^-$ close to the threshold are calculated within the vector meson dominance model. It is found that the theoretical results can describe the current experimental measurements. In particular, the results for the angular distribution parameters about the differential cross section are consistent with the experiments from BESIII Collaboration. In addition, the relative phase $ΔΦ$ of the electromagnetic form factors was given, and the spin polarization of $Λ_c^+$ is predicted at center-mass energy $4.7 \ \rm GeV$. It is hopeful to provide a new perspective on the characteristics of the charmed baryon $Λ_c^+$.

Toward discovering the excited $Ω$ baryons through nonleptonic weak decays of $Ω_c$

The nonleptonic weak decay processes $Ω_c \to Ωπ^+/Ω(1P)π^+/Ω(1D)π^+/Ω(2S)π^+$ are studied using the constituent quark model. The branching fraction of $Ω_c \to Ωπ^+$ is predicted to be $1.0\%$. Considering the newly observed $Ω(2012)$ resonance as a conventional $1P$-wave $Ω$ excite state with spin-parity $J^P=3/2^-$, the newly measured ratio $\mathcal{B}[Ω_c\to Ω(2012)π^+ \to (Ξ\bar{K})^-π^+ ]/\mathcal{B}[Ω_c\to Ωπ^+]$ at Belle can be well understood. Besides, the production rates for the missing $1P-$wave state $Ω(1^2P_{1/2^-})$, two spin quartet $1D-$wave states $Ω(1^4D_{1/2^+})$ and $Ω(1^4D_{3/2^+})$, and two $2S$-wave states $Ω(2^2S_{1/2^+})$ and $Ω(2^4S_{3/2^+})$ are also investigated. It is expected that these missing excited $Ω$ baryons should have large potentials to be discovered through the nonleptonic weak decays of $Ω_c$ in forthcoming experiments by Belle II and/or LHCb.

The $Λ_c^+\toηπ^+Λ$ reaction and the $Λa_0^+(980)$ and $π^+Λ(1670)$ contributions

We study from the theoretical point of view the $Λ_c^+\to π^+ ηΛ$ reaction, recently measured by the Belle and BESIII Collaborations, where clear signals are observed for $a_0(980)$, $Λ(1670)$, and $Σ(1385)$ excitation. By considering the $a_0(980)$ and $Λ(1670)$ as dynamically generated resonances from the meson meson and meson baryon interaction, respectively, we are able to determine their relative production strength in the reaction, which is also tied to the strength of the $π^+ ηΛ$ tree level contribution. We observe that this latter strength is very big and there are large destructive interferences between the tree level and the rescattering terms where the $a_0(980)$ and $Λ(1670)$ are generated. The $Σ(1385)$ contribution is included by means of a free parameter, the only one of the theory, up to a global normalization, when one considers only external emission, and we observe that the spin flip part of this term, usually ignored in theoretical and experimental works, plays an important role determining the shape of the mass distributions. Internal emission is also considered and it is found to play a minor role.
