On the evolution equations for ideal magnetohydrodynamics in curved spacetime

We examine the problem of the construction of a first order symmetric hyperbolic evolution system for the Einstein-Maxwell-Euler system. Our analysis is based on a 1+3 tetrad formalism which makes use of the components of the Weyl tensor as one of the unknowns. In order to ensure the symmetric hyperbolicity of the evolution equations implied by the Bianchi identity, we introduce a tensor of rank 3 corresponding to the covariant derivative of the Faraday tensor. Our analysis includes the case of a perfect fluid with infinite conductivity (ideal magnetohydrodynamics) as a particular subcase.

Constructing "non-Kerrness" on compact domains

Given a compact domain of a 3-dimensional hypersurface on a vacuum spacetime, a scalar (the "non-Kerrness") is constructed by solving a Dirichlet problem for a second order elliptic system. If such scalar vanishes, and a set of conditions are satisfied at a point, then the domain of dependence of the compact domain is isometric to a portion of a member of the Kerr family of solutions to the Einstein field equations. This construction is expected to be of relevance in the analysis of numerical simulations of black hole spacetimes.

Approximate twistors and positive mass

In this paper the problem of comparing initial data to a reference solution for the vacuum Einstein field equations is considered. This is not done in a coordinate sense, but through quantification of the deviation from a specific symmetry. In a recent paper [T. Bäckdahl, J.A. Valiente Kroon, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 231102 (2010)] this problem was studied with the Kerr solution as a reference solution. This analysis was based on valence 2 Killing spinors. In order to better understand this construction, in the present article we analyse the analogous construction for valence 1 spinors solving the twistor equation. This yields an invariant that measures how much the initial data deviates from Minkowski data. Furthermore, we prove that this invariant vanishes if and only of the mass vanishes. Hence, we get a proof of the positivity of mass.

Conformal extensions for stationary spacetimes

The construction of the cylinder at spatial infinity for stationary spacetimes is considered. Using a specific conformal gauge and frame, it is shown that the tensorial fields associated to the conformal Einstein field equations admit expansions in a neighbourhood of the cylinder at spatial infinity which are analytic with respect to some suitable time, radial and angular coordinates. It is then shown that the essentials of the construction are independent of the choice of conformal gauge. As a consequence, one finds that the construction of the cylinder at spatial infinity and the regular finite initial value problem for stationary initial data sets are, in a precise sense, as regular as they could be.

On the construction of a geometric invariant measuring the deviation from Kerr data

This article contains a detailed and rigorous proof of the construction of a geometric invariant for initial data sets for the Einstein vacuum field equations. This geometric invariant vanishes if and only if the initial data set corresponds to data for the Kerr spacetime, and thus, it characterises this type of data. The construction presented is valid for boosted and non-boosted initial data sets which are, in a sense, asymptotically Schwarzschildean. As a preliminary step to the construction of the geometric invariant, an analysis of a characterisation of the Kerr spacetime in terms of Killing spinors is carried out. A space spinor split of the (spacetime) Killing spinor equation is performed, to obtain a set of three conditions ensuring the existence of a Killing spinor of the development of the initial data set. In order to construct the geometric invariant, we introduce the notion of approximate Killing spinors. These spinors are symmetric valence 2 spinors intrinsic to the initial hypersurface and satisfy a certain second order elliptic equation ---the approximate Killing spinor equation. This equation arises as the Euler-Lagrange equation of a non-negative integral functional. This functional constitutes part of our geometric invariant ---however, the whole functional does not come from a variational principle. The asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the approximate Killing spinor equation is studied and an existence theorem is presented.

Geometric Invariant Measuring the Deviation from Kerr Data

A geometrical invariant for regular asymptotically Euclidean data for the vacuum Einstein field equations is constructed. This invariant vanishes if and only if the data correspond to a slice of the Kerr black hole spacetime --thus, it provides a measure of the non-Kerr-like behavior of generic data. In order to proceed with the construction of the geometric invariant, we introduce the notion of approximate Killing spinors.

A rigidity property of asymptotically simple spacetimes arising from conformally flat data

Given a time symmetric initial data set for the vacuum Einstein field equations which is conformally flat near infinity, it is shown that the solutions to the regular finite initial value problem at spatial infinity extend smoothly through the critical sets where null infinity touches spatial infinity if and only if the initial data coincides with Schwarzschild data near infinity.

Kerr Initial data

Exploiting a 3+1 analysis of the Mars-Simon tensor, conditions on a vacuum initial data set ensuring that its development is isometric to a subset of the Kerr spacetime are found. These conditions are expressed in terms of the vanishing of a positive scalar function defined on the initial data hypersurface. Applications of this result are discussed.

Estimates for the Maxwell field near the spatial and null infinity of the Schwarzschild spacetime

It is shown how the gauge of the ``regular finite initial value problem at spacelike infinity'' can be used to construct a certain type of estimates for the Maxwell field propagating on a Schwarzschild background. These estimates are constructed with the objective of obtaining information about the smoothness near spacelike and null infinity of a wide class of solutions to the Maxwell equations.

Killing spinor initial data sets

A 3+1 decomposition of the twistor and valence-2 Killing spinor equation is made using the space spinor formalism. Conditions on initial data sets for the Einstein vacuum equations are given so that their developments contain solutions to the twistor and/or Killing equations. These lead to the notions of twistor and Killing spinor initial data. These notions are used to obtain a characterisation of initial data sets whose development are of Petrov type N or D.

Initial data sets for the Schwarzschild spacetime

A characterisation of initial data sets for the Schwarzschild spacetime is provided. This characterisation is obtained by performing a 3+1 decomposition of a certain invariant characterisation of the Schwarzschild spacetime given in terms of concomitants of the Weyl tensor. This procedure renders a set of necessary conditions --which can be written in terms of the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor and their concomitants-- for an initial data set to be a Schwarzschild initial data set. Our approach also provides a formula for a static Killing initial data set candidate --a KID candidate. Sufficient conditions for an initial data set to be a Schwarzschild initial data set are obtained by supplementing the necessary conditions with the requirement that the initial data set possesses a stationary Killing initial data set of the form given by our KID candidate. Thus, we obtain an algorithmic procedure of checking whether a given initial data set is Schwarzschildean or not.

Does asymptotic simplicity allow for radiation near spatial infinity?

A representation of spatial infinity based in the properties of conformal geodesics is used to obtain asymptotic expansions of the gravitational field near the region where null infinity touches spatial infinity. These expansions show that generic time symmetric initial data with an analytic conformal metric at spatial infinity will give rise to developments with a certain type of logarithmic singularities at the points where null infinity and spatial infinity meet. These logarithmic singularities produce a non-smooth null infinity. The sources of the logarithmic singularities are traced back down to the initial data. It is shown that is the parts of the initial data responsible for the non-regular behaviour of the solutions are not present, then the initial data is static to a certain order. On the basis of these results it is conjectured that the only time symmetric data sets with developments having a smooth null infinity are those which are static in a neighbourhood of infinity. This conjecture generalises a previous conjecture regarding time symmetric, conformally flat data. The relation of these conjectures to Penrose's proposal for the description of the asymptotic gravitational field of isolated bodies is discussed.

On the nonexistence of conformally flat slices in the Kerr and other stationary spacetimes

It is proved that a stationary solutions to the vacuum Einstein field equations with non-vanishing angular momentum have no Cauchy slice that is maximal, conformally flat, and non-boosted. The proof is based on results coming from a certain type of asymptotic expansions near null and spatial infinity --which also show that the developments of Bowen-York type of data cannot have a development admitting a smooth null infinity--, and from the fact that stationary solutions do admit a smooth null infinity.

Polyhomogeneous expansions close to null and spatial infinity

A study of the linearised gravitational field (spin 2 zero-rest-mass field) on a Minkowski background close to spatial infinity is done. To this purpose, a certain representation of spatial infinity in which it is depicted as a cylinder is used. A first analysis shows that the solutions generically develop a particular type of logarithmic divergence at the sets where spatial infinity touches null infinity. A regularity condition on the initial data can be deduced from the analysis of some transport equations on the cylinder at spatial infinity. It is given in terms of the linearised version of the Cotton tensor and symmetrised higher order derivatives, and it ensures that the solutions of the transport equations extend analytically to the sets where spatial infinity touches null infinity. It is later shown that this regularity condition together with the requirement of some particular degree of tangential smoothness ensures logarithm-free expansions of the time development of the linearised gravitational field close to spatial and null infinities.
