Minimal Resolution of Relatively Compressed Level Algebras

A relatively compressed algebra with given socle degrees is an Artinian quotient $A$ of a given graded algebra $R/\fc$, whose Hilbert function is maximal among such quotients with the given socle degrees. For us $\fc$ is usually a ``general'' complete intersection and we usually require that $A$ be level. The precise value of the Hilbert function of a relatively compressed algebra is open, and we show that finding this value is equivalent to the Fröberg Conjecture. We then turn to the minimal free resolution of a level algebra relatively compressed with respect to a general complete intersection. When the algebra is Gorenstein of even socle degree we give the precise resolution. When it is of odd socle degree we give good bounds on the graded Betti numbers. We also relate this case to the Minimal Resolution Conjecture of Mustata for points on a projective variety. Finding the graded Betti numbers is essentially equivalent to determining to what extent there can be redundant summands (i.e. ``ghost terms'') in the minimal free resolution, i.e. when copies of the same $R(-t)$ can occur in two consecutive free modules. This is easy to arrange using Koszul syzygies; we show that it can also occur in more surprising situations that are not Koszul. Using the equivalence to the Fröberg Conjecture, we show that in a polynomial ring where that conjecture holds (e.g. in three variables), the possible non-Koszul ghost terms are extremely limited. Finally, we use the connection to the Fröberg Conjecture, as well as the calculation of the minimal free resolution for relatively compressed Gorenstein algebras, to find the minimal free resolution of general Artinian almost complete intersections in many new cases. This greatly extends previous work of the first two authors.

On the minimal free resolution of $n+1$ generic forms

We consider the minimal free resolution of a generic set of n+1 forms (not necessarily of the same degree) in a polynomial ring of n variables. The Hilbert function for such an ideal is known, thanks to a result of Stanley and of Watanabe. (For more than n+1 forms the Hilbert function is conjectured by Froberg.) However, in all but a few trivial cases, the resolution is not known. A conjecture of Iarrobino says that apart from Koszul syzygies, there should be no overlaps in the twists occurring in the free modules in the resolution. We are able to find the precise minimal free resolutions in many cases (depending on n and on the particular degrees) and give good bounds in many other cases. As a result, we see that Iarrobino's conjecture does not hold and we begin to have an understanding of what causes this failure. We conjecture that there are no such overlaps when all n+1 generators have the same degree. In the process of achieving these results, we extend a result of Boij by giving the graded Betti numbers of a generic Gorenstein algebra when n is even and the socle degree is large.

Reduced arithmetically Gorenstein schemes and simplicial polytopes with maximal Betti numbers

An SI-sequence is a finite sequence of positive integers which is symmetric, unimodal and satisfies a certain growth condition. These are known to correspond precisely to the possible Hilbert functions of Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the Weak Lefschetz Property, a property shared by most Artinian Gorenstein algebras. Starting with an arbitrary SI-sequence, we construct a reduced, arithmetically Gorenstein configuration $G$ of linear varieties of arbitrary dimension whose Artinian reduction has the given SI-sequence as Hilbert function and has the Weak Lefschetz Property. Furthermore, we show that $G$ has maximal graded Betti numbers among all arithmetically Gorenstein subschemes of projective space whose Artinian reduction has the Weak Lefschetz Property and the given Hilbert function. As an application we show that over a field of characteristic zero every set of simplicial polytopes with fixed $h$-vector contains a polytope with maximal graded Betti numbers.

Monomial ideals and the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection

It is well known that for a subscheme $V$ in ${\mathbb P}^{n}$ of codimension two, the conditions (1) $V$ is ACM, and (2) $V$ is "licci" (i.e. $V$ is in the liaison class of a complete intersection) are equivalent. In higher codimension, (2) implies (1) but the converse is false. For Gorenstein liaison the analog of (2) is: $(2')$ $V$ is "glicci" (i.e. $V$ is in the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection). It remains true that $(2')$ implies (1) but now the converse is an important open question. Previously the authors described a mechanism for lifting monomial ideals to reduced unions of linear varieties. We show here that if the monomial ideal is Artinian then the corresponding union is glicci. As a consequence, any Hilbert function that occurs among ACM schemes in fact occurs among glicci schemes. This is not true if we restrict to complete intersection links. We also show that any Cohen-Macaulay Borel-fixed monomial ideal is glicci. As a consequence, all ACM subschemes of projective space are glicci up to flat deformation.

Lifting Monomial Ideals

We show how to lift any monomial ideal J in n variables to a saturated ideal I of the same codimension in n+t variables. We show that I has the same graded Betti numbers as J and we show how to obtain the matrices for the resolution of I. The cohomology of I is described. Making general choices for our lifting, we show that I is the ideal of a reduced union of linear varieties with singularities that are `as small as possible' given the cohomological constraints. The case where J is Artinian is the nicest. In the case of curves we obtain stick figures for I, and in the case of points we obtain certain k-configurations which we can describe in a very precise way.

Resolutions of Subsets of Finite Sets of Points in Projective Space

Given a finite set, $X$, of points in projective space for which the Hilbert function is known, a standard result says that there exists a subset of this finite set whose Hilbert function is ``as big as possible'' inside $X$. Given a finite set of points in projective space for which the minimal free resolution of its homogeneous ideal is known, what can be said about possible resolutions of ideals of subsets of this finite set? We first give a maximal rank type description of the most generic possible resolution of a subset. Then we show that this generic resolution is not always achieved, by incorporating an example of Eisenbud and Popescu. However, we show that it {\em is} achieved for sets of points in projective two space: given any finite set of points in projective two space for which the minimal free resolution is known, there must exist a subset having the predicted resolution.

Degrees of generators of ideals defining subschemes of projective space

For an arithmetically Cohen--Macaulay subscheme of projective space, there is a well-known bound for the highest degree of a minimal generator for the defining ideal of the subscheme, in terms of the Hilbert function. We prove a natural extension of this bound for arbitrary locally Cohen--Macaulay subschemes. We then specialize to curves in $\pthree$, and show that the curves whose defining ideals have generators of maximal degree satisfy an interesting cohomological property. The even liaison classes possessing such curves are characterized, and we show that within an even liaison class, all curves with the property satisfy a strong Lazarsfeld--Rao structure theorem. This allows us to give relatively complete conditions for when a liaison class contains curves whose ideals have maximal degree generators, and where within the liaison class they occur.
