An Earth-sized Planet on the Verge of Tidal Disruption

TOI-6255~b (GJ 4256) is an Earth-sized planet (1.079$\pm0.065$ $R_\oplus$) with an orbital period of only 5.7 hours. With the newly commissioned Keck Planet Finder (KPF) and CARMENES spectrographs, we determined the planet's mass to be 1.44$\pm$0.14 $M_{\oplus}$. The planet is just outside the Roche limit, with $P_{\rm orb}/P_{\rm Roche}$ = 1.13 $\pm0.10$. The strong tidal force likely deforms the planet into a triaxial ellipsoid with a long axis that is $\sim$10\% longer than the short axis. Assuming a reduced stellar tidal quality factor $Q_\star^\prime \approx10^7$, we predict that tidal orbital decay will cause TOI-6255 to reach the Roche limit in roughly 400 Myr. Such tidal disruptions may produce the possible signatures of planet engulfment that have been on stars with anomalously high refractory elemental abundances compared to its conatal binary companion. TOI-6255 b is also a favorable target for searching for star-planet magnetic interactions, which might cause interior melting and hasten orbital decay. TOI-6255 b is a top target (Emission Spectroscopy Metric of about 24) for phase curve observations with the James Webb Space Telescope.

Geometric-algebraic approach to aqueous solutions of diprotic acids and its buffer mixtures

A closed-form analytical expression for $\ce{[H3O+]}$ has been obtained for aqueous solutions of diprotic acids and its soluble salts. This formula allows to calculate the pH of aqueous solutions of diprotic acids, their buffer solutions, and the titrations of these two by a strong base, from the values of p$K_1$, p$K_2$, and the effective concentrations of the acid and the base, $\bar{C}_\mathrm{a}$ and $\bar{C}_\mathrm{b}$ respectively. It is shown that a strong base titration of an acid, or its buffer solutions, is always a linear path in the $\bar{C}_\mathrm{a}$--$\bar{C}_\mathrm{b}$ plane, which allows a simple analysis of the pH stability of buffer solutions. The mathematical analysis of the equilibrium equations of the dissolution of a diprotic acid in water and the physical constraints allowed to obtain two approximate equations for the diprotic acids. One of the approximations is useful for acids with $\mathrm{p}K_2-\mathrm{p}K_1\le\log_{10}4$, the other for acids with $\mathrm{p}K_2-\mathrm{p}K_1\le-\log_{10}4$.

Geometric-algebraic approach to acid-base equilibrium

Closed-form expressions for the pH of ideal weak acid and weak acid buffer solutions (and their titration with a strong base) were obtained and analyzed with the aid of computer algebra systems. These expressions are used to evaluate, without the use of numerical approximations, the precision and accuracy of different approximations commonly employed to calculate the pH. The closed-form expression for the pH of a buffer solution is used to obtain an analytical expression for the pH stability when a strong base is added. Finally, it is shown that the pH expressions for all the systems under study can be obtained from an unique closed-form expression in terms of an effective weak acid constant and an effective acid concentration.

Phase-space matrix representation of differential equations for obtaining the energy spectrum of model quantum systems

Employing the phase-space representation of second order ordinary differential equations we developed a method to find the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the 1-dimensional time independent Schrödinger equation for quantum model systems. The method presented simplifies some approaches shown in textbooks, based on asymptotic analyses of the time-independent Schrödinger equation, and power series methods with recurrence relations. In addition, the method presented here facilitates the understanding of the relationship between the ordinary differential equations of the mathematical physics and the time independent Schrödinger equation of physical models as the harmonic oscillator, the rigid rotor, the Hydrogen atom, and the Morse oscillator.

The CARMENES search for exoplanets around M dwarfs: A low-mass planet in the temperate zone of the nearby K2-18

K2-18 is a nearby M2.5 dwarf, located at 34 pc and hosting a transiting planet which was first discovered by the {\it K2} mission and later confirmed with {\it Spitzer Space Telescope} observations. With a radius of $\sim 2 \, R_{\oplus}$ and an orbital period of $\sim 33$ days, the planet lies in the temperate zone of its host star and receives stellar irradiation similar to Earth. Here we perform radial velocity follow-up observations with the visual channel of CARMENES with the goal of determining the mass and density of the planet. We measure a planetary semi-amplitude of $K_b \sim 3.5$ \mpersec\ and a mass of $M_b \sim 9 \, M_{\oplus}$, yielding a bulk density around $ρ_b \sim 4 \, \mathrm{g \,cm^{-3}}$. This indicates a low-mass planet with a composition consistent with a solid core and a volatile-rich envelope. A signal at 9 days was recently reported using radial velocity measurements taken with the HARPS spectrograph. This was interpreted as being due to a second planet. We see a weaker, time and wavelength dependent signal in the CARMENES data set and thus favor stellar activity for its origin. \ktwo\ joins the growing group of low-mass planets detected in the temperate zone of M dwarfs. The brightness of the host star in the near-infrared makes the system a good target for detailed atmospheric studies with the {\it James Webb Space Telescope}.

Is the central binary system of the planetary nebula Henize 2-428 a Type Ia supernova progenitor?

We critically discuss the recent observations of the binary system at the center of the bipolar planetary nebula Henize 2-428. We find that the proposed explanation of two equal-mass degenerate objects with a total mass larger than the Chandrasekhar limiting mass that supposedly will merge in less than a Hubble time, possibly leading to a SN~Ia, is controversial. This hypothesis relies on the assumption that the variability of the He II 5412A spectral line is due to two absorption components. Instead, we propose that it can be accounted for by a broad absorption line from the central system on top of which there is a narrow emission line from the nebula. This prompted us to study if the binary system can be made of a degenerate star and a low-mass main sequence companion, or of two degenerate objects of smaller mass. We find that although both scenarios can account for the existence of two symmetric broad minima in the light curve, the second one agrees better with observations. We thus argue that the claim that Henize 2-428 provides observational evidence supporting the double-degenerate scenario for SN~Ia is premature.
