Finiteness and injectivity of Prym maps for cyclic coverings

The structure of the Prym map for coverings of degrees $d\geq 3$ is mostly unknown. Only recently, under mild numerical assumptions, a generic injectivity of the Prym maps for étale cyclic coverings of hyperelliptic curves of prime degrees has been shown. In the paper, we prove that the Prym maps is generically injective for all remaining degrees (i.e. composite numbers $d\geq 6$) and we prove global injectivity if $d$ is not a power of an odd prime. In particular, we complete the study of Prym maps of étale cyclic coverings of genus 2 curves. As an application, we fully characterise for which $d$ the Prym map of cyclic coverings of degree $d$ of genus $3$ curves is generically finite and we conjecture that it is injective.

Pseudoreflections on Prym Varieties

We show that for every g greater or equal than 5, the locus of Prym varieties in the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g-1 that possess a pseudoreflection of geometric origin is the union of three different non-empty explicit irreducible families. This is in stark contrast to the loci of Jacobian varieties that possess a pseudoreflection of geometric origin, which is empty for any genus greater than 3. In g=6, a distinguished example of Prym varieties with a pseudoreflection is given by intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds that possess an Eckardt point.

Monodromy of the Prym map and semicanonical pencils in genus 6

The Prym map $\mathcal{P}_6$ in genus 6 is dominant and generically finite of degree 27. When restricted to the divisor of curves with an odd semicanonical pencil $\mathcal{T}_6^o$, it is still generically finite, but of degree strictly smaller. In this paper, we prove that $\mathcal{P}_6$ restricted to $\mathcal{T}_6^o$ is birational and that the monodromy group over the image of $\mathcal{T}_6^o$ is the Weyl group $WD_5$. Thus, there are two other irreducible divisors in the moduli space of Prym curves $\mathcal{R}_6$ and the degree of $\mathcal{P}_6$ restricted to them is 10 and 16. Moreover, we study the geometry of the divisor where $\mathcal{P}_6$ has degree 10.

The second fundamental form of the moduli space of cubic threefolds in $\mathcal A_5$

We study the second fundamental form of the Siegel metric in $\mathcal A_5$ restricted to the locus of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds. We prove that the image of this second fundamental form, which is known to be non-trivial, is contained in the kernel of a suitable multiplication map. Some ingredients are: the conic bundle structure of cubic threefolds, Prym theory, Gaussian maps and Jacobian ideals.

On the local geometry of the moduli space of $(2,2)$-threefolds in ${\mathcal A}_9$

We study the local geometry of the moduli space of intermediate Jacobians of $(2,2)$-threefolds in ${\mathbb P}^2 \times {\mathbb P}^2$. More precisely, we prove that a composition of the second fundamental form of the Siegel metric in $\mathcal A_9$ restricted to this moduli space, with a natural multiplication map is a nonzero holomorphic section of a vector bundle. We also describe its kernel. We use the two conic bundle structures of these threefolds, Prym theory, gaussian maps and Jacobian ideals.

Holomorphic 1-forms on some coverings of the moduli space of curves

In this paper we consider unramified coverings of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of smooth projective complex curves of genus $g$. Under some hypothesis on the branch locus of the finite extended map to the Deligne-Mumford compactification, we prove the vanishing of the vector space of holomorphic 1-forms on the preimage of the smooth locus of $\mathcal{M}_g$. This applies to several moduli spaces, as the moduli space of curves with 2-level structures, of spin curves and of Prym curves. In particular, we obtain that there are no non-trivial holomorphic 1-forms on the smooth open set of the Prym locus.

Geometry of Prym semicanonical pencils and an application to cubic threefolds

In the moduli space $\mathcal{R}_g$ of double étale covers of curves of a fixed genus $g$, the locus formed by covers of curves with a semicanonical pencil consists of two irreducible divisors $\mathcal T^e_g$ and $\mathcal T^o_g$. We study the Prym map on these divisors, which shows significant differences between them and has a rich geometry in the cases of low genus. In particular, the analysis of $\mathcal T^o_5$ has enumerative consequences for lines on cubic threefolds.

Generic injectivity of the Prym map for double ramified coverings

In this paper we consider the Prym map for double coverings of curves of genus $g$ ramified at $r>0$ points. That is, the map associating to a double ramified covering its Prym variety. The generic Torelli theorem states that the Prym map is generically injective as soon as the dimension of the space of coverings is less or equal to the dimension of the space of polarized abelian varieties. We prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map in the cases of double coverings of curves with: (a) $g=2$, $r=6$, and (b) $g= 5$, $r=2$. In the first case the proof is constructive and can be extended to the range $r\ge \max \{6,\frac 23(g+2) \}$. For (b) we study the fibre along the locus of the intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds to conclude the generic injectivity. This completes the work of Marcucci and Pirola who proved this theorem for all the other cases, except for the bielliptic case $g=1$ (solved later by Marcucci and the first author), and the case $g=3, r=4$ considered previously by Nagaraj and Ramanan, and also by Bardelli, Ciliberto and Verra where the degree of the map is $3$. The paper closes with an appendix by Alessandro Verra with an independent result, the rationality of the moduli space of coverings with $g=2,r=6$, whose proof is self-contained.

Global Prym-Torelli for double coverings ramified in at least 6 points

We prove that the ramified Prym map $\mathcal P_{g, r}$ which sends a covering $π:D\longrightarrow C$ ramified in $r$ points to the Prym variety $P(π):=\text{Ker}(\text{Nm}_π)$ is an embedding for all $r\ge 6$ and for all $g(C)>0$. Moreover, by studying the restriction to the locus of coverings of hyperelliptic curves, we show that $\mathcal P_{g, 2}$ and $\mathcal P_{g, 4}$ have positive dimensional fibers.

Alternating Catalan numbers and curves with triple ramification

It is known that the monodromy group of each cover of a general curve of genus g>3 equals either the symmetric or the alternating group. The classical Catalan numbers count the minimal degree covers (with symmetric monodromy) of a general curve of even genus. We solve the analogous problem for the alternating group and we determine the number of alternating covers of minimal degree 2g+1 of a general curve of genus g.

Degree of irrationality of a very general abelian variety

Consider a very general abelian variety $A$ of dimension at least $3$ and an integer $0<d\leq \dim A$. We show that if the map $A^k\to CH_0(A)$ has a $d$-dimensional fiber then $k\geq d+(\dim A+1)/2$. This extends results of the second-named author which covered the cases $d=1,2$. As a geometric application, we obtain that any dominant rational map from a very general abelian $g$-fold to $\mathbb{P}^g$ has degree at least $(3\dim A+1)/2$ for $g\geq 3$. This improves results of Alzati and the last-named author in the case of a very general abelian variety.

Hyperelliptic Jacobians and isogenies

Motivated by results of Mestre and Voisin, in this note we mainly consider abelian varieties isogenous to hyperelliptic Jacobians In the first part we prove that a very general hyperelliptic Jacobian of genus $g\ge 4$ is not isogenous to a non-hyperelliptic Jacobian. As a consequence we obtain that the Intermediate Jacobian of a very general cubic threefold is not isogenous to a Jacobian. Another corollary tells that the Jacobian of a very general $d$-gonal curve of genus $g \ge 4$ is not isogenous to a different Jacobian. In the second part we consider a closed subvariety $\mathcal Y \subset \mathcal A_g$ of the moduli space of principally polarized varieties of dimension $g\ge 3$. We show that if a very general element of $\mathcal Y$ is dominated by a hyperelliptic Jacobian, then $\dim \mathcal Y\ge 2g$. In particular, if the general element in $\mathcal Y$ is simple, its Kummer variety does not contain rational curves. Finally we show that a closed subvariety $\mathcal Y\subset \mathcal M_g$ of dimension $2g-1$ such that the Jacobian of a very general element of $\mathcal Y$ is dominated by a hyperelliptic Jacobian is contained either in the hyperelliptic or in the trigonal locus.

On the Xiao conjecture for plane curves

Let $f: S\longrightarrow B$ be a non-trivial fibration from a complex projective smooth surface $S$ to a smooth curve $B$ of genus $b$. Let $c_f$ the Clifford index of the generic fibre $F$ of $f$. In [arXiv:1401.7502v4] it is proved that the relative irregularity of $f$, $q_f=h^{1,0}(S)-b$ is less than or equal to $g(F)-c_f$. In particular this proves the (modified) Xiao's conjecture: $q_f\le 1+g(F)/2$ for fibrations of general Clifford index. In this short note we assume that the generic fiber of $f$ is a plane curve of degree $d\ge 5$ and we prove that $q_f\le g(F)-c_f-1$. In particular we obtain the conjecture for families of quintic plane curves. This theorem is implied for the following result on infinitesimal deformations: let $F$ a smooth plane curve of degree $d\ge 5$ and let $ξ$ be an infinitesimal deformation of $F$ preserving the planarity of the curve. Then the rank of the cup-product map $\cdot ξ: H^0(F,ω_F) \rightarrow H^1(F,O_F)$ is at least $d-3$. We also show that this bound is sharp.

Connectedness Bertini Theorem via numerical equivalence

Let $X$ be an irreducible projective variety and $f$ a morphism $X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$. We give a new proof of the fact that the preimage of any linear variety of dimension $k\ge n+1-\dim f(X)$ is connected. We prove that the statement is a consequence of the Generalized Hodge Index Theorem using easy numerical arguments that hold in any characteristic. We also prove the connectedness Theorem of Fulton and Hansen as application of our main theorem.

Xiao's conjecture for general fibred surfaces

We prove that the genus $g$, the relative irregularity $q_f$ and the Clifford index $c_f$ of a non-isotrivial fibration $f$ satisfy the inequality $q_f \leq g - c_f$. This gives in particular a proof of Xiao's conjecture for fibrations whose general fibres have maximal Clifford index.

Theta-duality on Prym varieties and a Torelli Theorem

Let p:C' -> C be an unramified double covering of irreducible smooth curves and let P be the attached Prym variety. We prove the schematic theta-dual equalities in the Prym variety T(C')=V^2 and T(V^2)=C', where V^2 is the Brill-Noether locus of P associated to p considered by Welters. As an application we prove a Torelli Theorem analogous to the fact that the g-th symmetric product of a curve D of genus g determines the curve.
