QED vertex and anomalous magnetic moment in the presence of a magnetic field

We compute the fermion-photon vertex in QED in the presence of a constant and uniform magnetic background up to one-loop order. We show that even at tree-level, the vertex is modified due to the loss of Lorentz invariance induced by the magnetic field, thus breaking into longitudinal and transverse pieces. Moreover, the radiative corrections induce the emergence of a rich tensor structure that includes the anomalous magnetic moments in the transverse, parallel, and mixed transverse/parallel directions. We concentrate on studying one of these anomalous magnetic moment components, the one in the purely transverse direction. We find the selection rules for transitions between a few low-lying Landau levels and show that the amplitudes for transitions from an initial to a final Landau level differ by a sign from the reverse process due to the loss of time reversal invariance induced by the presence of the field. Contrary to the vacuum case, the amplitudes are, in general, complex, and the phase factor can be interpreted in terms of a finite life-time of the decaying state. For the anomalous magnetic moment in the purely transverse direction, transitions between states occupying both the lowest Landau levels are forbidden. Moreover, for the computation of the allowed transitions, we find that it is not necessary to include a photon mass since the magnetic field acts as an infrared regulator.

Backreaction Effects on Nonequilibrium Spectral Function

We show how to compute the spectral function for a scalar theory in two different scenarios: one which disregards back-reaction i.e. the response of the environment to the external particle, and the other one where back-reaction is considered. The calculation was performed using the Kadanoff-Baym equation through the Keldysh formalism. When back-reaction is neglected, the spectral function is equal to the equilibrium one, which can be represented as a Breit-Wigner distribution. When back-reaction is introduced we observed a damping in the spectral function of the thermal bath. Such behavior modifies the damping rate for particles created within the bath. This certainly implies phenomenological consequences right after the Big-Bang, when the primordial bath was created.

Quark deconfinement and gluon condensate in a weak magnetic field

We study QCD finite energy sum rules (FESR) for the axial-vector current correlator in the presence of a magnetic field, in the weak field limit and at zero temperature. We find that the perturbative QCD as well as the hadronic contribution to the sum rules get explicit magnetic field-dependent corrections and that these in turn induce a magnetic field dependence on the deconfinement phenomenological parameter s_0 and on the gluon condensate. The leading corrections turn out to be quadratic in the field strength. We find from the dimension d=2 first FESR that the magnetic field dependence of s_0 is proportional to the absolute value of the light-quark condensate. Hence, it increases with increasing field strength. This implies that the parameters describing chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement behave similarly as functions of the magnetic filed. Thus, at zero temperature the magnetic field is a catalysing agent of both chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. From the dimension d=4 second FESR we obtain the behavior of the gluon condensate in the presence of the external magnetic field. This condensate also increases with increasing field strength.

Chiral transition with magnetic fields

We study the nature of the chiral transition for an effective theory with spontaneous breaking of symmetry, where charged bosons and fermions are subject to the effects of a constant external magnetic field. The problem is studied in terms of the relative intensity of the magnetic field with respect to the mass and the temperature. When the former is the smallest of the scales, we present a suitable method to obtain magnetic and thermal corrections up to ring order at high temperature. By these means, we solve the problem of the instability in the boson sector for these theories, where the squared masses, taken as functions of the order parameter, can vanish and even become negative. The solution is found by considering the screening properties of the plasma, encoded in the resummation of the ring diagrams at high temperature. We also study the case where the magnetic field is the intermediate of the three scales and explore the nature of the chiral transition as we vary the field strength, the coupling constants and the number of fermions. We show that the critical temperature for the restoration of chiral symmetry monotonically increases from small to intermediate values of the magnetic fields and that this temperature is always above the critical temperature for the case when the magnetic field is absent.

Phase diagram for charged scalars in a magnetic field at finite temperature

We investigate the nature of the phase transition for charged scalars in the presence of a magnetic background for a theory with spontaneous symmetry breaking. We perform a careful treatment of the negative mass squared as a function of the order parameter and present a suitable method to obtain magnetic and thermal corrections up to ring order for the high temperature limit and the case where the magnetic field strength is larger than the absolute value of the square of the mass parameter. We show that for a given value of the self-coupling, the phase transition is first order for a small magnetic field strength and becomes second order as this last grows. We also show that the critical temperature in the presence of the magnetic field is always below the critical temperature for the case where the field is absent.

Magnetic catalysis of a charged Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the condensation phenomenon for a system of charged bosons in the presence of an external magnetic field. We show that condensation happens for a definite critical temperature instead of through a diffuse phase transition. The essential ingredient, overlooked in previous analyses and accounted for in this work, is the treatment of the plasma screening effects by means of resummation. We compute the critical temperature, for the case in which the condensate is made of charged pions and for typical densities found in compact astrophysical objects, for small and large values of the magnetic field. We show that the magnetic field catalyzes the onset of condensation at very small and at large values of the magnetic field, and that for intermediate values, the critical temperature for condensation is lower than for the zero magnetic field case.
