Enhancement of many-body quantum interference in chaotic bosonic systems

Although highly successful, the truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) leaves out many-body quantum interference between mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii solutions as well as other quantum effects, and is therefore essentially classical. Turned around, this implies that if a system's quantum properties deviate from TWA, they must be exhibiting some quantum phenomenon, such as localization, diffraction, or tunneling. Here, we consider in detail a particular interference effect arising from discrete symmetries, which can lead to a significant enhancement of quantum observables with respect to the TWA prediction, and derive an augmented version of the TWA in order to incorporate them. Using the Bose-Hubbard model for illustration, we further show strong evidence for the presence of dynamical localization due to remaining differences between the TWA predictions and quantum results.

Reversible quantum information spreading in many-body systems near criticality

Quantum chaotic interacting $N$-particle systems are assumed to show fast and irreversible spreading of quantum information on short (Ehrenfest) time scales $\sim\!\log N$. Here we show that, near criticality, certain many-body systems exhibit fast initial scrambling, followed subsequently by oscillatory behavior between reentrant localization and delocalization of information in Hilbert space. We consider both integrable and nonintegrable quantum critical bosonic systems with attractive contact interaction that exhibit locally unstable dynamics in the corresponding many-body phase space of the large-$N$ limit. Semiclassical quantization of the latter accounts for many-body correlations in excellent agreement with simulations. Most notably, it predicts an asymptotically constant local level spacing $\hbar/τ$, again given by $τ\! \sim\! \log N$. This unique timescale governs the long-time behavior of out-of-time-order correlators that feature quasi-periodic recurrences indicating reversibility.

Partial Fermionization---Spectral Universality in 1D Repulsive Bose Gases

Due to the vast growth of the many-body level density with excitation energy, its smoothed form is of central relevance for spectral and thermodynamic properties of interacting quantum systems. We compute the cumulative of this level density for confined one-dimensional continuous systems with repulsive short-range interactions. We show that the crossover from an ideal Bose gas to the strongly correlated, fermionized gas, i.e., partial fermionization, exhibits universal behavior: Systems with very few up to many particles share the same underlying spectral features. In our derivation we supplement quantum cluster expansions with short-time dynamical information. Our nonperturbative analytical results are in excellent agreement with numerics for systems of experimental relevance in cold atom physics, such as interacting bosons on a ring (Lieb-Liniger model) or subject to harmonic confinement. Our method provides predictions for excitation spectra that enable access to finite-temperature thermodynamics in large parameter ranges.

Nonlocal pair correlations in Lieb-Liniger gases: A unified nonperturbative approach from weak degeneracy to high temperatures

We present analytical results for the nonlocal pair correlations in one-dimensional bosonic systems with repulsive contact interactions that are uniformly valid from the classical regime of high temperatures down to weak quantum degeneracy entering the regime of ultralow temperatures. By using the information contained in the short-time approximations of the full many-body propagator, we derive results that are nonperturbative in the interaction parameter while covering a wide range of temperatures and densities. For the case of three particles we give a simple formula for arbitrary couplings that is exact in the dilute limit while remaining valid up to the regime where the thermal de Broglie wavelength $λ_T$ is of the order of the characteristic length $L$ of the system. We then show how to use this result to find analytical expressions for the nonlocal correlations for arbitrary but fixed particle numbers $N$ including finite-size corrections. Neglecting the latter in the thermodynamic limit provides an expansion in the quantum degeneracy parameter $Nλ_T/L$. We compare our analytical results with numerical Bethe ansatz calculations, finding excellent agreement.

Rigorous construction of coherent state path integrals through dualization

Two long-standing problems in the construction of coherent state path integrals, the unwarranted assumption of path continuity and the ambiguous definition of the Hamiltonian symbol, are rigorously solved. To this end the fully controlled dual representation familiar from lattice quantum field theories is introduced. Dualization allows for both the step-by-step check in the construction of discrete path integrals and for the identification of the Hamiltonian and Berry phase part of the action, thus making both discrete and continuous path integrals consistently defined. Once the correct action is constructed, we are able to follow the transition to the continuum for the polar form of general Bose-Hubbard models and to provide an exact form of the path integral for general spin systems, where previous works showed its failure for all standard choices of operator ordering.

Post-Ehrenfest many-body quantum interferences in ultracold atoms far-out-of-equilibrium

Far out-of-equilibrium many-body quantum dynamics in isolated systems necessarily generate interferences beyond an Ehrenfest time scale, where quantum and classical expectation values diverge. Of great recent interest is the role these interferences play in the spreading of quantum information across the many degrees of freedom, i.e.~scrambling. Ultracold atomic gases provide a promising setting to explore these phenomena. Theoretically speaking, the heavily-relied-upon truncated Wigner approximation leaves out these interferences. We develop a semiclassical theory which bridges classical and quantum concepts in many-body bosonic systems and properly incorporates such missing quantum effects. For mesoscopically populated Bose-Hubbard systems, it is shown that this theory captures post-Ehrenfest quantum interference phenomena very accurately, and contains relevant phase information to perform many-body spectroscopy with high precision.

Describing many-body bosonic waveguide scattering with the truncated Wigner method

We consider quasi-stationary scattering of interacting bosonic matter waves in one-dimensional waveguides, as they arise in guided atom lasers. We show how the truncated Wigner (tW) method, which corresponds to the semiclassical description of the bosonic many-body system on the level of the diagonal approximation, can be utilized in order to describe such many-body bosonic scattering processes. Special emphasis is put on the discretization of space at the exact quantum level, in order to properly implement the semiclassical approximation and the tW method, as well as on the discussion of the results to be obtained in the continuous limit.

Many-Body Spin Echo

We predict a universal echo phenomenon present in the time evolution of many-body states of interacting quantum systems described by Fermi-Hubbard models. It consists of the coherent revival of transition probabilities echoing a sudden flip of the spins that, contrary to its single-particle (Hahn) version, is not dephased by interactions or spin-orbit coupling. The many-body spin echo signal has a universal shape independent of the interaction strength, and an amplitude and sign depending only on combinatorial relations between the number of particles and the number of applied spin flips. Our analytical predictions, based on semiclassical interfering amplitudes in Fock space associated with chaotic mean-field solutions, are tested against extensive numerical simulations confirming that the coherent origin of the echo lies in the existence of anti-unitary symmetries.

Canonical description of 1D few-body systems with short range interaction

We address the fundamental interplay between indistinguishability and interactions when discreteness effects are neglected in systems with strictly fixed number of particles. For this end we supplement cluster expansions (many-body canonical techniques where quantum statistics is treated exactly) with short-time/large volume dynamical information where interparticle forces are described non-perturbatively. This approach, specially suitable for the few-body case where it overcomes the inappropriate use of virial expansions, can be consistently combined with scaling considerations, minimal ground-state information and strong coupling expansions in such a way that a single interaction event provides most of the thermodynamic and spectral properties of 1D systems with short range interactions. Our analytical results, in excellent agreement with numerical simulations, show a form of universal integrability of interaction effects for arbitrary confinements.

The semiclassical propagator in Fock space: dynamical echo and many-body interference

We present a semiclassical approach to many-body quantum propagation in terms of coherent sums over quantum amplitudes associated with the solutions of corresponding classical nonlinear wave equations. This approach adequately describes interference effects in the many-body space of interacting bosonic systems. The main quantity of interest, the transition amplitude between Fock states when the dynamics is driven by both single-particlecontributions and many-body interactions of similar magnitude, is non-perturbatively constructed in the spirit of Gutzwiller's derivation of the van Vleck propagator from the path integral representation of the time evolution operator, but lifted to the space of symmetrized many-body states. Effects beyond mean-field, here representing the classical limit of the theory, are semiclassically described by means of interfering amplitudes where the action and stability of the classical solutions enter. In this way, a genuinely many-body echo phenomenon, coherent backscattering in Fock space, is presented arising due to coherent quantum interference between classical solutions related by time reversal.

Periodic Mean-Field Solutions and the Spectra of Discrete Bosonic Fields: Trace Formula for Bose-Hubbard Models

We consider the many-body spectra of interacting bosonic quantum fields on a lattice in the semiclassical limit of large particle number $N$. We show that the many-body density of states can be expressed as a coherent sum over oscillating long-wavelength contributions given by periodic, non-perturbative solutions of the, typically non-linear, wave equation of the classical (mean-field) limit. To this end we construct the semiclassical approximation for both the smooth and oscillatory part of the many-body density of states in terms of a trace formula starting from the exact path integral form of the propagator between many-body quadrature states. We therefore avoid the use of a complexified classical limit characteristic of the coherent state representation. While quantum effects like vacuum fluctuations and gauge invariance are exactly accounted for, our semiclassical approach captures quantum interference and therefore is valid well beyond the Ehrenfest time where naive quantum-classical correspondence breaks down. Remarkably, due to a special feature of harmonic systems with incommesurable frequencies, our formulas are generically valid also in the free-field case of non-interacting bosons.

Boson Sampling as Canonical Transformation: A semiclassical approach in Fock space

We show that a theory of complex scattering between many-body (Fock) states can be constructed such that its classical limit is a canonical transformation thus encoding quantum interference in the semiclassical form of the associated unitary operator. Based on this idea, we study the different coherent effects expected under different choices of the many-body states and provide different representations of the associated transition probabilities. In this way, we derive exact relations and representations of the scattering process that can be used to attack timely problems related with Boson Sampling.

Aspects of integrability in a classical model for non-interacting fermionic fields

In this work we investigate the issue of integrability in a classical model for noninteracting fermionic fields. This model is constructed via classical-quantum correspondence obtained from the semiclassical treatment of the quantum system. Our main finding is that the classical system, contrary to the quantum system, is not integrablein general. Regarding this contrast it is clear that in general classical models for fermionic quantum systems have to be handled with care. Further numerical investigation of the system showed that there may be islands of stability in the phase space. We also investigated a similar model that is used in theoretical chemistry and found this one to be most probably integrable, although also here the integrability is not assured by the quantum-classical correspondence principle.

The semiclassical propagator in fermionic Fock space

We present a rigorous derivation of a semiclassical propagator for anticommuting (fermionic) degrees of freedom, starting from an exact representation in terms of Grassmann variables. As a key feature of our approach the anticommuting variables are integrated out exactly, and an exact path integral representation of the fermionic propagator in terms of commuting variables is constructed. Since our approach is not based on auxiliary (Hubbard-Stratonovich) fields, it surpasses the calculation of fermionic determinants yielding a standard form $\int {\cal D}[ψ,ψ^{*}] {\rm e}^{i R[ψ,ψ^{*}]}$ with real actions for the propagator. These two features allow us to provide a rigorous definition of the classical limit of interacting fermionic fields and therefore to achieve the long-standing goal of a theoretically sound construction of a semiclassical van Vleck-Gutzwiller propagator in fermionic Fock space. As an application, we use our propagator to investigate how the different universality classes (orthogonal, unitary and symplectic) affect generic many-body interference effects in the transition probabilities between Fock states of interacting fermionic systems.

Coherent Backscattering in Fock Space: a Signature of Quantum Many-Body Interference in Interacting Bosonic Systems

We predict a generic manifestation of quantum interference in many-body bosonic systems resulting in a coherent enhancement of the average return probability in Fock space. This enhancement is both robust with respect to variations of external parameters and genuinely quantum insofar as it cannot be described within mean-field approaches. As a direct manifestation of the superposition principle in Fock space, it arises when many-body equilibration due to interactions sets in. Using a semiclassical approach based on interfering paths in Fock space, we calculate the magnitude of the backscattering peak and its dependence on gauge fields that break time-reversal invariance. We confirm our predictions by comparing them to exact quantum evolution probabilities in Bose-Hubbard models, and discuss the relevance of our findings in the context of many-body thermalization.

A geometrical approach to the mean density of states in many-body quantum systems

We present a novel analytical approach for the calculation of the mean density of states in many-body systems made of confined indistinguishable and non-interacting particles. Our method makes explicit the intrinsic geometry inherent in the symmetrization postulate and, in the spirit of the usual Weyl expansion for the smooth part of the density of states in single-particle confined systems, our results take the form of a sum over clusters of particles moving freely around manifolds in configuration space invariant under elements of the group of permutations. Being asymptotic, our approximation gives increasingly better results for large excitation energies and we formally confirm that it coincides with the celebrated Bethe estimate in the appropriate region. Moreover, our construction gives the correct high energy asymptotics expected from general considerations, and shows that the emergence of the fermionic ground state is actually a consequence of an extremely delicate large cancellation effect. Remarkably, our expansion in cluster zones is naturally incorporated for systems of interacting particles, opening the road to address the fundamental problem about the interplay between confinement and interactions in many-body systems of identical particles.

Quantifying entanglement in multipartite conditional states of open quantum systems by measurements of their photonic environment

A key lesson of the decoherence program is that information flowing out from an open system is stored in the quantum state of the surroundings. Simultaneously, quantum measurement theory shows that the evolution of any open system when its environment is measured is nonlinear and leads to pure states conditioned on the measurement record. Here we report the discovery of a fundamental relation between measurement and entanglement which is characteristic of this scenario. It takes the form of a scaling law between the amount of entanglement in the conditional state of the system and the probabilities of the experimental outcomes obtained from measuring the state of the environment. Using the scaling, we construct the distribution of entanglement over the ensemble of experimental outcomes for standard models with one open channel and provide rigorous results on finite-time disentanglement in systems coupled to non-Markovian baths. The scaling allows the direct experimental detection and quantification of entanglement in conditional states of a large class of open systems by quantum tomography of the bath.

Universal spatial correlations in random spinor fields

We identify universal spatial fluctuations in systems with non trivial spin dynamics. To this end we calculate by exact numerical diagonalization a variety of experimentally relevant correlations between spinor amplitudes, spin polarizations and spin currents both in the bulk and near the boundary of a confined two-dimensional clean electron gas in the presence of spin-orbit interaction and a single magnetic impurity. We support or claim of universality with the excellent agreement between the numerical results and system-independent spatial correlations of a random field defined on both the spatial and spin degrees of freedom. A rigorous identity relating our universal predictions with response functions provides a direct physical interpretation of our results in the framework of linear response theory.
