On the theory of Lorentz gases with long range interactions

We construct and study the stochastic force field generated by a Poisson distribution of sources at finite density, $x_1,x_2,\cdots$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ each of them yielding a long range potential $Q_iΦ(x-x_i)$ with possibly different charges $Q_i \in \mathbb{R}$. The potential $Φ$ is assumed to behave typically as $|x|^{-s}$ for large $|x|$, with $s > 1/2$. We will denote the resulting random field as "generalized Holtsmark field". We then consider the dynamics of one tagged particle in such random force fields, in several scaling limits where the mean free path is much larger than the average distance between the scatterers. We estimate the diffusive time scale and identify conditions for the vanishing of correlations. These results are used to obtain appropriate kinetic descriptions in terms of a linear Boltzmann or Landau evolution equation depending on the specific choices of the interaction potential.

A revised proof of uniqueness of self-similar profiles to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for kernels close to constant

In this article we correct the proof of a uniqueness result for self-similar solutions to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for kernels $K=K(x,y)$ that are homogeneous of degree zero and close to constant in the sense that \begin{equation*} -\varepsilon \leq K(x,y)-2 \leq \varepsilon \left( \Big(\frac{x}{y}\Big)^α + \Big(\frac{y}{x}\Big)^α\right) \end{equation*} for $α\in [0,\frac 1 2)$. Assuming in addition that $K$ has an analytic extension to $\mathbb{C}\setminus(-\infty,0]$ and prescribing the precise asymptotic behaviour of $K$ at the origin, we prove that self-similar solutions with given mass are unique if $\varepsilon$ is sufficiently small.

On the growth of a particle coalescing in a Poisson distribution of obstacles

In this paper we consider the coalescence dynamics of a tagged particle moving in a random distribution of particles with volumes independently distributed according to a probability distribution (CTP model). We provide a rigorous derivation of a kinetic equation for the probability density for the size and position of the tagged particle in the kinetic limit where the volume fraction $ϕ$ filled by the background of particles tends to zero. Moreover, we prove that the particle system, i.e. CTP model, is well posed for a small but positive volume fraction with probability one as long as the the distribution of the particle sizes is compactly supported.

Oscillatory dynamics in Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with diagonal kernel

We characterize the long-time behaviour of solutions to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with a diagonal kernel of homogeneity $γ< 1$. Due to the property of the diagonal kernel, the value of a solution depends only on a discrete set of points. As a consequence, the long-time behaviour of solutions is in general periodic, oscillating between different rescaled versions of a self-similar solution. Immediate consequences of our result are a characterization of the set of data for which the solution converges to self-similar form and a uniqueness result for self-similar profiles.

Instabilities and oscillations in coagulation equations with kernels of homogeneity one

We discuss the long-time behaviour of solutions to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with kernels of homogeneity one, combining formal asymptotics, heuristic arguments based on linearization, and numerical simulations. The case of what we call diagonally dominant kernels is particularly interesting. Here one expects that the long-time behaviour is, after a suitable change of variables, the same as for the Burgers equation. However, for kernels that are close to the diagonal one we obtain instability of both, constant solutions and traveling waves and in general no convergence to N-waves for integrable data. On the other hand, for kernels not close to the diagonal one these structures are stable, but the traveling waves have strong oscillations. This has implications on the approach towards an N-wave for integrable data, which is also characterized by strong oscillations near the shock front.

Veiled singularities for the spherically symmetric massless Einstein-Vlasov system

This paper continues the investigation of the formation of naked singularities in the collapse of collisionless matter initiated in [RV]. There the existence of certain classes of non-smooth solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system was proved. Those solutions are self-similar and hence not asymptotically flat. To obtain solutions which are more physically relevant it makes sense to attempt to cut off these solutions in a suitable way so as to make them asymptotically flat. This task, which turns out to be technically challenging, will be carried out in this paper. [RV] A. D. Rendall and J. J. L. The Method of Reflections, Homogenization and Screening for Poisson and Stokes Equations in Perforated Domains

We study the convergence of the Method of Reflections for the Dirichlet problem of the Poisson and the Stokes equations in perforated domains which consist in the exterior of balls. We prove that the method converges if the balls are contained in a bounded region and the density of the electrostatic capacity of the balls is sufficiently small. If the capacity density is too large or the balls extend to the whole space, the method diverges, but we provide a suitable modification of the method that converges to the solution of the Dirichlet problem also in this case. We give new proofs of classical homogenization results for the Dirichlet problem of the Poisson and the Stokes equations in perforated domains using the (modified) Method of Reflections.

A hyperbolic problem with non-local constraint describing ion-rearrangement in a model for ion-lithium batteries

In this paper we study the Fokker-Plank equation arising in a model which describes the charge and discharge process of ion-lithium batteries. In particular we focus our attention on slow reaction regimes with non-negligible entropic effects, which triggers the mass-splitting transition. At first we prove that the problem is globally well-posed. After that we prove a stability result under some hypothesis of improved regularity and a uniqueness result for the stability under some additional condition of

Self-similar solutions with fat tails for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with singular kernels

We show the existence of self-similar solutions with fat tails for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for homogeneous kernels satisfying $C_1 \left(x^{-a}y^{b}+x^{b}y^{-a}\right)\leq K\left(x,y\right)\leq C_2\left(x^{-a}y^{b}+x^{b}y^{-a}\right)$ with $a>0$ and $b<1$. This covers especially the case of Smoluchowski's classical kernel $K(x,y)=(x^{1/3} + y^{1/3})(x^{-1/3} + y^{-1/3})$. For the proof of existence we first consider some regularized kernel $K_ε$ for which we construct a sequence of solutions $h_ε$. In a second step we pass to the limit $ε\to 0$ to obtain a solution for the original kernel $K$. The main difficulty is to establish a uniform lower bound on $h_ε$. The basic idea for this is to consider the time-dependent problem and choosing a special test function that solves the dual problem.

Rate-independent dynamics and Kramers-type phase transitions in nonlocal Fokker-Planck equations with dynamical control

The hysteretic behavior of many-particle systems with non-convex free energy can be modeled by nonlocal Fokker-Planck equations that involve two small parameters and are driven by a time- dependent constraint. In this paper we consider the fast reaction regime related to Kramers-type phase transitions and show that the dynamics in the small-parameter limit can be described by a rate-independent evolution equation with hysteresis. For the proof we first derive mass-dissipation estimates by means of Muckenhoupt constants, formulate conditional stability estimates, and char- acterize the mass flux between the different phases in terms of moment estimates that encode large deviation results. Afterwards we combine all these partial results and establish the dynamical sta- bility of localized peaks as well as sufficiently strong compactness results for the basic macroscopic quantities.

On the Theory of Weak Turbulence for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We study the Cauchy problem for a kinetic equation arising in the weak turbulence theory for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We define suitable concepts of weak and mild solutions and prove local and global well posedness results. Several qualitative properties of the solutions, including long time asymptotics, blow up results and condensation in finite time are obtained. We also prove the existence of a family of solutions that exhibit pulsating behavior.
