The many facets of the Fabry-Perot

We address the response, both in amplitude and intensity, of a Fabry-Perot from a variety of viewpoints. These complementary pictures conspire to achieve a comprehensive and consistent theory of the operation of this system.

Amplitude response of a Fabry-Perot interferometer

The complex reflected and transmitted amplitudes from a Fabry-Perot interferometer are analyzed using a phase-space approach, in which the real and imaginary parts of those amplitudes are taken as basic variables. As functions of the optical path length of the cavity, the reflected amplitude describes a circle, whereas the transmitted is given by a hippopede. The system performance can be directly related to the geometrical parameters of these curves.

Invisibility and PT Symmetry: A Simple Geometrical Viewpoint

We give a simplified account of the properties of the transfer matrix for a complex one-dimensional potential, paying special attention to the particular instance of unidirectional invisibility. In appropriate variables, invisible potentials appear as performing null rotations, which lead to the helicity-gauge symmetry of massless particles. In hyperbolic geometry, this can be interpreted, via Möbius transformations, as parallel displacements, a geometric action that has no Euclidean analogy.

General unit-disk representation for periodic multilayers

We suggest a geometrical framework to discuss periodic layered structures in the unit disk. The band gaps appear when the point representing the system approaches the unit circle. We show that the trace of the matrix describing the basic period allows for a classification in three families of orbits with quite different properties. The laws of convergence of the iterates to the unit circle can be then considered as universal features of the reflection.
