Strongly Coupled Models with a Higgs-like Boson

Considering the one-loop calculation of the oblique S and T parameters, we have presented a study of the viability of strongly-coupled scenarios of electroweak symmetry breaking with a light Higgs-like boson. The calculation has been done by using an effective Lagrangian, being short-distance constraints and dispersive relations the main ingredients of the estimation. Contrary to a widely spread believe, we have demonstrated that strongly coupled electroweak models with massive resonances are not in conflict with experimental constraints on these parameters and the recently observed Higgs-like resonance. So there is room for these models, but they are stringently constrained. The vector and axial-vector states should be heavy enough (with masses above the TeV scale), the mass splitting between them is highly preferred to be small and the Higgs-like scalar should have a WW coupling close to the Standard Model one. It is important to stress that these conclusions do not depend critically on the inclusion of the second Weinberg sum rule.

Large-distance properties of holographic baryons

Employing the asymptotic instanton solution in an arbitrary background of a set of holographic QCD models, we show that baryon form factors have a precise large-distance behaviour regardless of the background. The dependence coincides with that obtained from general chiral soliton models and large-$N_C$ chiral perturbation theory. The nonlinear terms in the equations of motion are necessary to recover the correct results. We also show that the holographic currents have the right structure at low energy if the solutions of the full equation of motion, instead of the linearized ones, are used. The indication is that in this holographic approach, the linearized approximation used in the meson sector is not appropriate for the solitonic description of the baryons.

Viability of strongly-coupled scenarios with a light Higgs-like boson

We present a one-loop calculation of the oblique S and T parameters within strongly-coupled models of electroweak symmetry breaking with a light Higgs-like boson. We use a general effective Lagrangian, implementing the chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R -> SU(2)_{L+R} with Goldstones, gauge bosons, the Higgs-like scalar and one multiplet of vector and axial-vector massive resonance states. Using a dispersive representation and imposing a proper ultraviolet behaviour, we obtain S and T at the next-to-leading order in terms of a few resonance parameters. The experimentally allowed range forces the vector and axial-vector states to be heavy, with masses above the TeV scale, and suggests that the Higgs-like scalar should have a WW coupling close to the Standard Model one. Our conclusions are generic and apply to more specific scenarios such as the minimal SO(5)/SO(4) composite Higgs model.

One-Loop Calculation of the Oblique S Parameter in Higgsless Electroweak Models

We present a one-loop calculation of the oblique S parameter within Higgsless models of electroweak symmetry breaking and analyze the phenomenological implications of the available electroweak precision data. We use the most general effective Lagrangian with at most two derivatives, implementing the chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R -> SU(2)_{L+R} with Goldstones, gauge bosons and one multiplet of vector and axial-vector massive resonance states. Using the dispersive representation of Peskin and Takeuchi and imposing the short-distance constraints dictated by the operator product expansion, we obtain S at the NLO in terms of a few resonance parameters. In asymptotically-free gauge theories, the final result only depends on the vector-resonance mass and requires M_V > 1.8 TeV (3.8 TeV) to satisfy the experimental limits at the 3 σ(1σ) level; the axial state is always heavier, we obtain M_A > 2.5 TeV (6.6 TeV) at 3σ(1σ). In strongly-coupled models, such as walking or conformal technicolour, where the second Weinberg sum rule does not apply, the vector and axial couplings are not determined by the short-distance constraints; but one can still derive a lower bound on S, provided the hierarchy M_V < M_A remains valid. Even in this less constrained situation, we find that in order to satisfy the experimental limits at 3σone needs M_{V,A} > 1.8 TeV.

The vector form factor at the next-to-leading order in 1/N(C): chiral couplings L9(mu) and C88(mu) - C90(mu)

Using the Resonance Chiral Theory Lagrangian, we perform a calculation of the vector form factor of the pion at the next-to-leading order (NLO) in the 1/N(C) expansion. Imposing the correct QCD short-distance constraints, one fixes the amplitude in terms of the pion decay constant F and resonance masses. Its low momentum expansion determines then the corresponding O(p4) and O(p6) low-energy chiral couplings at NLO, keeping control of their renormalization scale dependence. At mu0=0.77 GeV, we obtain L9(mu0) = (7.9 \pm 0.4) 10^{-3} and C88(mu0)-C90(mu0)=(-4.6 \pm 0.4) 10^{-5}.

Resonance saturation of the chiral couplings at NLO in 1/Nc

The precision obtainable in phenomenological applications of Chiral Perturbation Theory is currently limited by our lack of knowledge on the low-energy constants (LECs). The assumption that the most important contributions to the LECs come from the dynamics of the low-lying resonances, often referred to as the resonance saturation hypothesis, has stimulated the use of large-Nc resonance lagrangians in order to obtain explicit values for the LECs. We study the validity of the resonance saturation assumption at the next-to-leading order in the 1/Nc expansion within the framework of Resonance Chiral Theory (RChT). We find that, by imposing QCD short-distance constraints, the chiral couplings can be written in terms of the resonance masses and couplings and do not depend explicitly on the coefficients of the chiral operators in the Goldstone boson sector of RChT. As we argue, this is the counterpart formulation of the resonance saturation statement in the context of the resonance lagrangian. Going beyond leading order in the 1/Nc counting allow us to keep full control of the renormalization scale dependence of the LEC estimates.

Some Remarks on the Pade Unitarization of Low-Energy Amplitudes

We present a critical analysis of Pade-based methods for the unitarization of low energy amplitudes. We show that the use of certain Pade Approximants to describe the resonance region may lead to inaccurate determinations. In particular, we find that in the Linear Sigma Model the unitarization of the low energy amplitude through the inverse amplitude method produces essentially incorrect results for the mass and width of the sigma. Alternative sequences of Pades are studied and we find that the diagonal sequences (i.e., [N/N]) have much better convergence properties.
