Local null controllability of a quasi-linear system and related numerical experiments

This paper concerns the null control of quasi-linear parabolic systems where the diffusion coefficient depends on the gradient of the state variable. In our main theoretical result, with some assumptions on the regularity and growth of the diffusion coefficient and regular initial data, we prove that local null controllability holds. To this purpose, we consider the null controllability problem for the linearized system, we deduce new estimates on the control and the state and, then, we apply a Local Inversion Theorem. We also formulate an iterative algorithm of the quasi-Newton kind for the computation of a null control and an associated state. We apply this method to some numerical approximations of the problem and illustrate the results with several experiments.

Optimal control of a class of nonlinear heat conduction models

We study an optimal control problem for a quasilinear parabolic equation modeling nonlinear heat conduction during heat treatment of metals. Under general assumptions, we prove existence of an optimal control and characterize the associated optimal control-state pair in a practically relevant framework. The main difficulty is the quadratic gradient term, which we handle through energy estimates and differentiability properties of the control-to-state map.

Studies on the Rao-Nakra Sandwich Beam: Well-Posedness, Dynamics, and Controllability

In this work, we investigate the well-posedness, stabilization, and boundary controllability of a linear Rao-Nakra type sandwich beam. The system consists of three coupled equations that represent the longitudinal displacements of the outer layers and the transverse displacement of the composite beam, all of which are coupled with dynamical boundary conditions. In the first problem, time-varying interior damping and static boundary conditions with time-dependent delays are considered. Then, we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions for the Cauchy problem associated with the damped system using semigroup theory and a classical result by Kato. Furthermore, employing a Lyapunov-based approach, we prove that the system's energy decays exponentially, despite the presence of time-varying weights and delays. In the second problem, we consider a boundary linear control system with dynamical boundary conditions, and prove its well-posedness. By deriving an observability inequality for the adjoint system and applying the Hilbert Uniqueness Method (HUM), we show that the system is null controllable. A key contribution of this work lies in handling the full three-equation coupled system, which involves significant difficulty due to the dynamic boundary conditions, resolved via appropriately constructed Lyapunov functionals and intermediate observability inequalities.

Local null controllability of the complete N-dimensional Ladyzhenskaya-Boussinesq model

This work investigates both local null controllability and large time null controllability for a class of complete Ladyzhenskaya Boussinesq systems, where the controls are distributed and supported on small subsets of the domain. The proof of local null controllability relies on classical techniques, including Carleman estimates and Liusternik Inverse Mapping Theorem. Nevertheless, the presence of nonlinearities in both the velocity and temperature equations necessitates careful treatment.

Existence, Stability and Controllability of the parabolic-parabolic thermistor model

In this article we establish the well-posedness, energy estimates, stability, and local null controllability for the thermistor system modeled by a parabolic-parabolic system using a control force acting on just one equation of the system. The proof of the controllability is based on appropriate Carleman estimates and Liusternik's inverse function theorem to obtain the local controllability of the nonlinear system. The coupling of the system happens both in the terms of order zero and one, which requires the use of a special Carleman estimate for the system.

Local controllability of free boundary three-dimensional semilinear radial parabolic equations

We prove that a free boundary semilinear heat equation with Stefan boundary condition and radially symmetric data is locally null controllable. The strategy involves reducing the problem to the corresponding one-dimensional formulation and adapting a Carleman inequality in that setting. The local null controllability of the free-boundary problem is then established via the Schauder fixed-point theorem. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first controllability result for this problem with Stefan boundary condition in more than one spatial dimension.

Hierarchical null controllability of a degenerate parabolic equation with nonlocal coefficient

In this paper we use a Stackelberg-Nash strategy to show the local null controllability of a parabolic equation where the diffusion coefficient is the product of a degenerate function in space and a nonlocal term. We consider one control called \textit{leader} and two controls called \textit{followers}. To each leader we associate a Nash equilibrium corresponding to a bi-objective optimal control problem; then, we find a leader that solves the null controllability problem. The linearized degenerated system is treated adapting Carleman estimates for degenerated systems from Demarque, Límaco and Viana \cite{DemarqueLimacoViana_deg_sys2020} and the local controllability of the non-linear system is obtained using Liusternik's inverse function theorem. The nonlocal coefficient originates a multiplicative coupling in the optimality system that gives rise to interesting calculations in the applications of the inverse function theorem.

On the controllability of laminated beams with Venttsel-type boundary conditions

This paper examines the boundary controllability of a Timoshenko laminated beam system subject to Venttsel-type boundary conditions. The study focuses on a novel configuration in which three controls are applied solely at the boundary of the beam. Controllability is established by deriving an appropriate observability inequality for the corresponding adjoint system, which is then employed within the framework of the duality method in the setup of the classical Hilbert uniqueness method (HUM) to achieve the control problem. The main contribution lies in the analysis of a system comprising three beams governed by dynamic Venttsel-type boundary conditions, as introduced by Venttsel in [Theory Probab. Appl., 4 (1959)].

Remarks on the control of two-phase Stefan free-boundary problems

This paper concerns the null controllability of the two-phase 1D Stefan problem with distributed controls. This is a free-boundary problem that models solidification or melting processes. In each phase, a parabolic equation, completed with initial and boundary conditions must be satisfied; the phases are separated by a phase-change interface where an additional free-boundary condition is imposed. We assume that two localized sources of heating/cooling controls act on the system (one in each phase). We prove a local null controllability result: the temperatures and the interface can be respectively steered to zero and to a prescribed location provided the initial data and interface position are sufficiently close to the targets. The ingredients of the proofs are a compactness-uniqueness argument (to deduce appropriate observability estimates adapted to constraints) and a fixed-point formulation and resolution of the controllability problem (to deduce the result for the nonlinear system). We also prove a negative result corresponding to the case where only one control acts on the system and the interface does not collapse to the boundary.

On Pareto equilibria for bi-objective diffusive optimal control problems

We investigate Pareto equilibria for bi-objective optimal control problems. Our framework comprises the situation in which an agent acts with a distributed control in a portion of a given domain, and aims to achieve two distinct (possibly conflicting) targets. We analyze systems governed by linear and semilinear heat equations and also systems with multiplicative controls. We develop numerical methods relying on a combination of finite elements and finite differences. We illustrate the computational methods we develop via numerous experiments.

Local null controllability of a class of non-Newtonian incompressible viscous fluids

We investigate the null controllability property of systems that mathematically describe the dynamics of some non-Newtonian incompressible viscous flows. The principal model we study was proposed by O. A. Ladyzhenskaya, although the techniques we develop here apply to other fluids having a shear-dependent viscosity. Taking advantage of the Pontryagin Minimum Principle, we utilize a bootstrapping argument to prove that sufficiently smooth controls to the forced linearized Stokes problem exist, as long as the initial data in turn has enough regularity. From there, we extend the result to the nonlinear problem. As a byproduct, we devise a quasi-Newton algorithm to compute the states and a control, which we prove to converge in an appropriate sense. We finish the work with some numerical experiments.

Local null controllability for degenerate parabolic equations with nonlocal term

We establish a local null controllability result for following the nonlinear parabolic equation: $$u_t-\left(b\left(x,\int_0^1u \ \right)u_x \right)_x+f(t,x,u)=hχ_ω,\ (t,x)\in (0,T)\times (0,1) $$ where $b(x,r)=\ell(r)a(x)$ is a function with separated variables that defines an operator which degenerates at $x=0$ and has a nonlocal term. Our approach relies on an application of Liusternik's inverse mapping theorem that demands the proof of a suitable Carleman estimate.
