Quantitative weak mixing for typical Salem substitution suspension flows

The paper investigates quantitative weak mixing of Salem substitutions flows. We prove that for a substitution whose substitution matrix is irreducible over the rationals and the dominant eigenvalue is a Salem number, for almost every suspension flow with a piecewise constant roof function, quantitative weak mixing holds with a rate that is slightly worse than a power of $\log\log$. We do not know if this is sharp, but we do show that for any suspension flow of this kind, quantitative weak mixing with a polynomial rate is impossible. Results for specific systems are often much weaker than for ``typical'' or ``generic'' ones. In the Appendix we explain how a minor modification of an argument from Bufetov and Solomyak (2014) yields very weak, but nevertheless quantitative weak mixing estimates of $\log^*$ type for the {\em self-similar} suspension flow over a Salem substitution. Simultaneously this provides first quantitative decay rates for the Fourier transform of Salem Bernoulli convolutions.

Local spectral estimates and quantitative weak mixing for substitution $\mathbb{Z}$-actions

The paper investigates Hölder and log-Hölder regularity of spectral measures for weakly mixing substitutions and the related question of quantitative weak mixing. It is assumed that the substitution is primitive, aperiodic, and its substitution matrix is irreducible over the rationals. In the case when there are no eigenvalues of the substitution matrix on the unit circle, our main theorem says that a weakly mixing substitution $\mathbb{Z}$-action has uniformly log-Hölder regular spectral measures, and hence admits power-logarithmic bounds for the rate of weak mixing. In the more delicate Salem substitution case, our second main result says that Hölder regularity holds for algebraic spectral parameters, but the Hölder exponent cannot be chosen uniformly.

Quantitative weak mixing of self-affine tilings

We study the regularity of spectral measures of dynamical systems arising from a translation action on tilings of substitutive nature. The results are inspired in the work of Bufetov and Solomyak, where they established a log-Hölder modulus of continuity of one-dimensional self-similar tiling systems. We generalize this result to higher dimensions in the more general setting of self-affine tilings systems. Further analysis leads to uniform estimates in the whole space of spectral parameters, allowing to deduce logarithmic rates of weak mixing.

Modulus of continuity for spectral measures of suspension flows over Salem type substitutions

We study the spectrum of the self-similar suspension flows of sub-shifts arising from primitive substitutions. We focus on the case where the substitution matrix has a Salem number α as dominant eigenvalue. We obtain a Hölder exponent for the spectral measures for points away from zero and belonging to the field Q(α). This exponent depends only on three parameters of each of these points: its absolute value, the absolute value of its real conjugate and its denominator.

Lyapunov exponents of the spectral cocycle for topological factors of bijective substitutions on two letters

The present paper explores the spectral cocycle, defined by A. Bufetov and B. Solomyak, in the special case of bijective substitutions on two letters, the most prominent example being the Thue-Morse substitution. We derive an explicit subexponential behaviour of the deviations from the expected exponential behavior. Moreover, these sharp bounds will be exploited to prove that the top Lyapunov exponent is greater or equal to the top exponent of the subshift topological factors after a renormalization. In order to obtain such results for the substitutive subshift factors, we define a special kind of sum, which is a multiple version of the twisted Birkhoff sum. For the particular case of the Thue-Morse substitution, we derive that the exponent is zero, we give an explicit subexponential bound for the twisted Birkhoff sums and we do the same for subshift topological factors.
