Confining kinks. $ζ$-regularized one-loop kink mass shifts in exotic field theories

By combining stability analysis of scalar field theories with the Darboux transformation technique, we create models featuring kink-like solutions whose quantum perturbations are all bounded. On the one hand, the stability analysis relates scalar theories with Schrödinger equations, whose solutions serve as quantum perturbation modes. On the other hand, the Darboux transformation allows for constructing new exotic but solvable Schrödinger equations. This framework relates the quantum harmonic oscillator and its rational deformations to exotic scalar theories featuring non-trivial potentials. Depending on the structure of the spectrum of perturbation frequencies, these potentials may have various local maximums, minimums, and inflection points. The stationary solutions take the form of the definite integral over a finite interval of a function times the Gaussian bell distribution, including the Error and the Owen $T$ functions. Such models do not propagate quantum perturbations around the respective vacuums, so zero-point renormalization does not take place. However, Riemann$-ζ$ function regularization allows us to achieve finite one-loop quantum corrections to the classical mass.

Non-topological fractional fermion number in the Jackiw-Rossi model

We compute the vacuum fermion current in $(2+1)$ dimensional Jackiw-Rossi model by using the $1/m$ expansion. The current is expressed through a weighted $η$-function with a matrix weight. In the presence of such a weight, the usual proof of topological nature of $η(0)$ is not longer applicable. Direct computations confirm the following surprising result: the fermion number induced by vortices in the Jackiw-Rossi model is \textit{not} topological.

Nonlinear symmetries of perfectly invisible $PT$-regularized conformal and superconformal mechanics systems

We investigate how the Lax-Novikov integral in the perfectly invisible $PT$-regularized zero-gap quantum conformal and superconformal mechanics systems affects on their (super)-conformal symmetries. We show that the expansion of the conformal symmetry with this integral results in a nonlinearly extended generalized Shrödinger algebra. The $PT$-regularized superconformal mechanics systems in the phase of the unbroken exotic nonlinear $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Poincaré symmetry are described by nonlinearly super-extended Schrödinger algebra with the $osp(2|2)$ sub-superalgebra. In the partially broken phase, the scaling dimension of all odd integrals is indefinite, and the $osp(2|2)$ is not contained as a sub-superalgebra.

Perfectly invisible $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric zero-gap systems, conformal field theoretical kinks, and exotic nonlinear supersymmetry

We investigate a special class of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric quantum models being perfectly invisible zero-gap systems with a unique bound state at the very edge of continuous spectrum of scattering states. The family includes the $\mathcal{PT}$-regularized two particle Calogero systems (conformal quantum mechanics models of de Alfaro-Fubini-Furlan) and their rational extensions whose potentials satisfy equations of the KdV hierarchy and exhibit, particularly, a behaviour typical for extreme waves. We show that the two simplest Hamiltonians from the Calogero subfamily determine the fluctuation spectra around the $\mathcal{PT}$-regularized kinks arising as traveling waves in the field-theoretical Liouville and $SU(3)$ conformal Toda systems. Peculiar properties of the quantum systems are reflected in the associated exotic nonlinear supersymmetry in the unbroken or partially broken phases. The conventional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry is extended here to the $\mathcal{N}=4$ nonlinear supersymmetry that involves two bosonic generators composed from Lax-Novikov integrals of the subsystems, one of which is the central charge of the superalgebra. Jordan states are shown to play an essential role in the construction.

{\cal N}=2 Supersymmetric quantum mechanics of N Lieb-Liniger-Yang bosons on a line

A supersymmetric generalization of the Lieb-Liniger-Yang dynamics governing $N$ massive bosons moving on a line with delta interactions among them at coinciding points is developed. The analysis of the delicate balance between integrability and supersymmetry, starting from the exactly solvable non supersymmetric LLY system, is one of the paper main concerns. Two extreme regimes of the $N$ parameter are explored: 1) For few bosons we fall in the realm of supersymmetric quantum mechanics with a short number of degrees of freedom, e.g., the SUSY P$\ddot{\rm o}$sch-Teller potentials if $N=1$. 2) For large $N$ we deal with supersymmetric extensions of many body systems in the thermodynamic limit akin, e.g., to the supersymmetric Calogero-Sutherland systems. Emphasis will be put in the investigation of the ground state structure of these quantum mechanical systems enjoying ${\cal N}=2$ extended supersymmetry without spoiling integrability. The decision about wether or not supersymmetry is spontaneously broken, a central question in SUSY quantum mechanics determined from the ground state structure, is another goal of the paper.

Dissecting zero modes and bound states on BPS vortices in Ginzburg-Landau superconductors

In this paper the zero modes of fluctuation of cylindrically symmetric self-dual vortices are analyzed and described in full detail. These BPS topological defects arise at the critical point between Type II and Type I superconductors, or, equivalently, when the masses of the Higgs particle and the vector boson in the Abelian Higgs model are equal. In addition, novel bound states of Higss and vector bosons trapped by the self-dual vortices at their core are found and investigated.

Lecture Notes on Three Supersymmetric/Topological Systems in Quantum Field Theory

((1+1)-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ super-symmetric field theory and (3+1)-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ super-symmetric gauge theory are discussed in a, more or less, unified way, designed to identify the quantum BPS states in both systems. Euclidean 4-dimensional gauge theory with ${\cal N}=2$ twisted super-symmetry is also analized. ${\bf C}^\infty$-topological invariants are identified as certain n-point correlation functions in this QFT framework. The twist of the effective dual Abelian gauge theory is briefly described, both from mathematical and physical viewpoints. The physical nature of the topological defects arising in these systems, kinks, BPS and Dirac monopoles, BPST instantons, Liouville and Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen selfdual vortices, etcetera, is analyzed, The thread of the story connecting the QFT systems treated respectively in Sections §.3 and §.4 is the process of TWIST that leads from a conventional extended Supersymetric Gauge Theory to the topological ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY Donaldson QFT. Within Section §.3 the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z}$-dualities establish a link between the weak coupling regime of the original gauge theory and the Wilsonian (abelian) effective gauge theory arising at low energies. We shall also look after the reminiscences of these dualities between the twisted TQFT systems of Section §.4.

Two Species of Vortices in a massive Gauged Non-linear Sigma Model

Non-linear sigma models with scalar fields taking values on $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^n$ complex manifolds are addressed. In the simplest $n=1$ case, where the target manifold is the $\mathbb{S}^2$ sphere, we describe the scalar fields by means of stereographic maps. In this case when the $\mathbb{U}(1)$ symmetry is gauged and Maxwell and mass terms are allowed, the model accommodates stable self-dual vortices of two kinds with different energies per unit length and where the Higgs field winds at the cores around the two opposite poles of the sphere. Allowing for dielectric functions in the magnetic field, similar and richer self-dual vortices of different species in the south and north charts can be found by slightly modifying the potential. Two different situations are envisaged: either the vacuum orbit lies on a parallel in the sphere, or one pole and the same parallel form the vacuum orbit. Besides the self-dual vortices of two species, there exist BPS domain walls in the second case. Replacing the Maxwell contribution of the gauge field to the action by the second Chern-Simons secondary class, only possible in $(2+1)$-dimensional Minkowski space-time, new BPS topological defects of two species appear. Namely, both BPS vortices and domain ribbons in the south and the north charts exist because the vacuum orbit consits of the two poles and one parallel. Formulation of the gauged $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$ model in a Reference chart shows a self-dual structure such that BPS semi-local vortices exist. The transition functions to the second or third charts break the $\mathbb{U}(1)\times\mathbb{S}\mathbb{U}(2)$ semi-local symmetry, but there is still room for standard self-dual vortices of the second species. The same structures encompassing $N$ complex scalar fields are easily generalized to gauged $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^N$ models.

Soliton defects in one-gap periodic system and exotic supersymmetry

By applying Darboux-Crum transformations to the quantum one-gap Lame system, we introduce an arbitrary countable number of bound states into forbidden bands. The perturbed potentials are reflectionless and contain two types of soliton defects in the periodic background. The bound states with finite number of nodes are supported in the lower forbidden band by the periodicity defects of the potential well type, while the pulse type bound states in the gap have infinite number of nodes and are trapped by defects of the compression modulations nature. We investigate the exotic nonlinear N=4 supersymmetric structure in such paired Schrodinger systems, which extends an ordinary N=2 supersymmetry and involves two bosonic generators composed from Lax-Novikov integrals of the subsystems. One of the bosonic integrals has a nature of a central charge, and allows us to liaise the obtained systems with the stationary equations of the Korteweg-de Vries and modified Korteweg-de Vries hierarchies. This exotic supersymmetry opens the way for the construction of self-consistent condensates based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and associated with them new solutions to the Gross-Neveu model. They correspond to the kink or kink-antikink defects of the crystalline background in dependence on whether the exotic supersymmetry is unbroken or spontaneously broken.

Quantum-induced interactions in the moduli space of degenerate BPS domain walls

In this paper quantum effects are investigated in a very special two-scalar field model having a moduli space of BPS topological defects. In a $(1+1)$-dimensional space-time the defects are classically degenerate in mass kinks, but in $(3+1)$ dimensions the kinks become BPS domain walls, all of them sharing the same surface tension at the classical level. The heat kernel/zeta function regularization method will be used to control the divergences induced by the quantum kink and domain wall fluctuations. A generalization of the Gilkey-DeWitt-Avramidi heat kernel expansion will be developed in order to accommodate the infrared divergences due to zero modes in the spectra of the second-order kink and domain wall fluctuation operators, which are respectively $N\times N$ matrix ordinary or partial differential operators. Use of these tools in the spectral zeta function associated with the Hessian operators paves the way to obtain general formulas for the one-loop kink mass and domain wall tension shifts in any $(1+1)$- or $(3+1)$-dimensional $N$-component scalar field theory model. Application of these formulae to the BPS kinks or domain walls of the $N=2$ model mentioned above reveals the breaking of the classical mass or surface tension degeneracy at the quantum level. Because the main parameter distinguishing each member in the BPS kink or domain wall moduli space is essentially the distance between the centers of two basic kinks or walls, the breaking of the degeneracy amounts to the surge in quantum-induced forces between the two constituent topological defects. The differences in surface tension induced by one-loop fluctuations of BPS walls give rise mainly to attractive forces between the constituent walls except if the two basic walls are very far apart. Repulsive forces between two close walls only arise if the coupling is approaches the critical value from below.

Fermion in a multi-kink-antikink soliton background, and exotic supersymmetry

We construct a fermion system in a multi-kink-antikink soliton background, and present in an explicit form all its trapped configurations (bound state solutions) as well as scattering states. This is achieved by exploiting an exotic N=4 centrally extended nonlinear supersymmetry of completely isospectral pairs of reflectionless Schrodinger systems with potentials to be n-soliton solutions for the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The obtained reflectionless Dirac system with a position-dependent mass is shown to possess its own exotic nonlinear supersymmetry associated with the matrix Lax-Novikov operator being a Darboux-dressed momentum. In the process, we get an algebraic recursive representation for the multi-kink-antikink backgrounds, and establish their relation to the the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. We also indicate how the results can be related to the physics of self-consistent condensates based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations.

Effect of scalings and translations on the supersymmetric quantum mechanical structure of soliton systems

We investigate a peculiar supersymmetry of the pairs of reflectionless quantum mechanical systems described by n-soliton potentials of a general form that depends on n scaling and n translation parameters. We show that if all the discrete energy levels of the subsystems are different, the superalgebra, being insensitive to translation parameters, is generated by two supercharges of differential order 2n, two supercharges of order 2n+1, and two bosonic integrals of order 2n+1 composed from Lax integrals of the partners. The exotic supersymmetry undergoes a reduction when r discrete energy levels of one subsystem coincide with any r discrete levels of the partner, the total order of the two independent intertwining generators reduces then to 4n-2r+1, and the nonlinear superalgebraic structure acquires a dependence on r relative translations. For a complete pairwise coincidence of the scaling parameters which control the energies of the bound states and the transmission scattering amplitudes, the emerging isospectrality is detected by a transmutation of one of the Lax integrals into a bosonic central charge. Within the isospectral class, we reveal a special case giving a new family of finite-gap first order Bogoliubov-de Gennes systems related to the AKNS integrable hierarchy.

Kink mass quantum shifts from SUSY quantum mechanics

In this paper a new version of the DHN (Dashen-Hasslacher-Neveu) formula, which is used to compute the one-loop order kink mass correction in (1+1)-dimensional scalar field theory models, is constructed. The new expression is written in terms of the spectral data coming from the supersymmetric partner operator of the second-order small kink fluctuation operator and allows us to compute the kink mass quantum shift in new models for which this calculation was out of reach by means of the old formula.

One-loop kink mass shifts: a computational approach

In this paper we develop a procedure to compute the one-loop quantum correction to the kink masses in generic (1+1)-dimensional one-component scalar field theoretical models. The procedure uses the generalized zeta function regularization method helped by the Gilkey-de Witt asymptotic expansion of the heat function via Mellin's transform. We find a formula for the one-loop kink mass shift that depends only on the part of the energy density with no field derivatives, evaluated by means of a symbolic software algorithm that automates the computation. The improved algorithm with respect to earlier work in this subject has been tested in the sine-Gordon and $λ(ϕ)_2^4$ models. The quantum corrections of the sG-soliton and $λ(ϕ^4)_2$-kink masses have been estimated with a relative error of 0.00006% and 0.00007% respectively. Thereafter, the algorithm is applied to other models. In particular, an interesting one-parametric family of double sine-Gordon models interpolating between the ordinary sine-Gordon and a re-scaled sine-Gordon model is addressed. Another one-parametric family, in this case of $ϕ^6$ models, is analyzed. The main virtue of our procedure is its versatility: it can be applied to practically any type of relativistic scalar field models supporting kinks.

On domain walls in a Ginzburg-Landau non-linear S^2-sigma model

The domain wall solutions of a Ginzburg-Landau non-linear $S^2$-sigma hybrid model are unveiled. There are three types of basic topological walls and two types of degenerate families of composite - one topological, the other non-topological- walls. The domain wall solutions are identified as the finite action trajectories (in infinite time) of a related mechanical system that is Hamilton-Jacobi separable in sphero-conical coordinates. The physical and mathematical features of these domain walls are thoroughly discussed.
