Star formation and morphological trends in the Antlia cluster: Probing environmental influence out to 5R200

Galaxy evolution in dense environments such as clusters is strongly affected by environmental processes that can alter both morphology and star formation activity. We investigate these effects in the Antlia cluster out to 5R200 using Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) data. We derive H-alpha-based star formation rates from the J0660 band and Sersic indices with GALFITM. Our analysis focuses on 154 spectroscopically confirmed galaxies brighter than mr = 16. We classify galaxies as early- or late-type systems using colour and Sersic index, and as quenched or star-forming using specific star formation rate. We examine their dependence on clustercentric distance, projected phase-space, substructure, and local density. We find that star-forming galaxies dominate from 1 to 5R200, while quenched galaxies are more common within 1R200. Early- and late-type galaxies show similar radial trends, with comparable fractions within 1R200 and a higher late-type fraction at larger radii. Quenched galaxies dominate at log(Sigma10 [Mpc^-2]) >= 1.5, whereas late-type galaxies dominate at log(Sigma10 [Mpc^-2]) <= 1.0. We identify substructures extending from the cluster centre to the outskirts. Substructures outside the central region are dominated by star-forming and late-type galaxies, with fractions similar to those of galaxies not associated with detected substructures. However, when the massive central structure is included, the fraction of star-forming galaxies in substructures decreases, indicating a more environmentally processed population in the central region. Altogether, the presence of a massive central substructure together with additional substructures detected out to 5R200 indicates that Antlia is still undergoing mass assembly through group accretion, consistent with a dynamically active and young cluster that is still assembling its galaxy population.

CHANCES, the Chilean Cluster Galaxy Evolution Survey: Selection and initial characterisation of clusters and superclusters

CHANCES, the CHileAN Cluster galaxy Evolution Survey, will study the evolution of galaxies in and around 100 massive galaxy clusters from the local Universe out to $z = 0.45$, and two superclusters at $z \sim 0.05$ that contain roughly 25 Abell clusters each. CHANCES will use the new 4MOST Spectroscopic Survey Facility on the VISTA 4m telescope to obtain spectra for $\sim$500,000 galaxies with magnitudes $r_\mathrm{AB} < 20.4$, providing comprehensive spectroscopic coverage of each cluster out to $5r_{200}$. Its wide and deep scope will trace massive and dwarf galaxies from the surrounding filaments and groups to the cores of galaxy clusters. This will enable the study of galaxy preprocessing and of the role of the evolving environment on galaxy evolution. In this paper, we present and characterise the sample of clusters and superclusters to be targeted by CHANCES. We used literature catalogues based on X-ray emission and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect to define the cluster sample in a homogeneous way, with attention to cluster mass and redshift, as well as the availability of ancillary data. We calibrated literature mass estimates from various surveys against each other and provide an initial mass estimate for each cluster, which we used to define the radial extent of the 4MOST coverage. We also present an initial assessment of the structure surrounding these clusters based on the redMaPPer red-sequence algorithm as a preview of some of the science CHANCES will enable.

Ultra-Compact Dwarfs around NGC 3268

We present radial velocities (from Gemini/GMOS) of the second sample of ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs) and bright globular clusters (GCs) in the Antlia cluster. Twenty-three objects are located around the giant elliptical NGC 3268, and one is close to the fainter lenticular NGC 3273. Together with previously found UCDs around NGC 3258 a total of 35 UCDs and bright GCs has been now identified in the Antlia cluster. Their colours and magnitudes are compared with those of the nuclei of dE,N galaxies already confirmed as Antlia members. For a subsample that lie on ACS images and are brighter than M_V = -9 mag, the effective radii (R_eff) have been measured, the maximum radius being approximately 10 pc. In addition to the radial velocity sample, we find 10 objects in the magnitude range corresponding to GCs but with 10 < R_eff < 17 pc, resembling the so-called `extended clusters'. By number and magnitude, the new UCDs fit to the GC luminosity function, supporting their interpretation as bright GCs. Additionally, we use a tracer mass estimator to calculate the mass enclosed up to ~47 kpc from NGC 3268, which results in 2.7 x 10^12 M_o.

Common group dynamic drives modern epidemics across social, financial and biological domains

We show that qualitatively different epidemic-like processes from distinct societal domains (finance, social and commercial blockbusters, epidemiology) can be quantitatively understood using the same unifying conceptual framework taking into account the interplay between the timescales of the grouping and fragmentation of social groups together with typical epidemic transmission processes. Different domain-specific empirical infection profiles, featuring multiple resurgences and abnormal decay times, are reproduced simply by varying the timescales for group formation and individual transmission. Our model emphasizes the need to account for the dynamic evolution of multi-connected networks. Our results reveal a new minimally-invasive dynamical method for controlling such outbreaks, help fill a gap in existing epidemiological theory, and offer a new understanding of complex system response functions.
