Intrinsic Hilbert metrics on cones of equivalent norms

Let $X$ be a Banach space and let $\mathcal{N}(X)$ denote the family of equivalent norms on $X$. We study Hilbert projective metrics on its projectivization $\mathcal{N}'(X)$ induced by ambient cones of nonnegative functions, with particular attention to the intrinsic Hilbert metric induced by the cone $\mathcal{N}(X)\cup\{0\}$. First, we show that the symmetric logarithmic metric on $\mathcal{N}'(X)$ is the Hilbert projective metric induced by the cone of nonnegative real-valued functions, and we characterize the ambient cones that induce the same metric. We then study the intrinsic order on $\mathcal{N}(X)$. For this purpose, we introduce the triangular defect $Δ_p(x,y)=p(x)+p(y)-p(x+y)$ and prove that two norms $p,q\in\mathcal{N}(X)$ belong to the same intrinsic part if and only if their triangular defects are uniformly comparable, that is, $aΔ_p\leqΔ_q\leq bΔ_p$ for some $a,b>0$. This yields an explicit formula for the intrinsic Hilbert metric in terms of the pointwise comparison of the norms and of their triangular defects. Finally, the map $Φ(p)=(p,Δ_p)$ realizes the intrinsic cone order of $\mathcal{N}(X)$ inside a canonical product cone of nonnegative functions and preserves the Hilbert metric on each intrinsic part.

Finite Polyhedral Models for the Space of Equivalent Norms

We study finite polyhedral models inside the projectivized space of equivalent norms $\mathcal{N}'(X)$ on a finite-dimensional Banach space $X$, endowed with the logarithmic distortion metric. Given a finite symmetric direction set $E$, we introduce the class of $αE$-norms, defined as Minkowski functionals of symmetric polytopes whose vertices lie on the rays prescribed by $E$. We identify the admissible weights $α$ for which this parametrization is non-redundant and prove that they give a one-to-one parametrization of the corresponding finite direction model $\mathcal{N}(E)$. We then refine this description by introducing complete, symmetric, simplicial $E$-fans, which encode the conical regions on which the associated polyhedral norms are linear. For a fixed fan $\mathcal{F}$, we define the corresponding geometric and coordinate fan models $\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{F})$ and $\mathcal{R}(\mathcal{F})$, and show that they are naturally isomorphic as cones. After quotienting by positive scalar multiplication, the coordinate models become isometric to the corresponding norm models: the logarithmic distortion metric on $\mathcal{N}'(E)$ and $\mathcal{N}'(\mathcal{F})$ is represented exactly by the Hilbert projective metric on the admissible weight spaces. Finally, we prove completeness results for these finite models and show how they provide finite-dimensional polyhedral approximations to the metric geometry of $\mathcal{N}'(X)$.

Completeness of constructible norms

In the present work we study for a given Banach space the quotient of the family of equivalent norms modulus the collinearity relationship and prove that under a Banach-Mazur type metric this family is a complete metric space, and we also prove the completeness of the family of constructible norms for the Banach space of bounded Lipschitzian mappings between convex sets of a Banach space.
