Complete Raman Tensor Determination in Birefringent $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ by Single-Stage Hyperspectral Analysis of Polarization Angle-Resolved Raman Spectra

The low symmetry of the monoclinic phase of Ga$_2$O$_3$ leads to pronounced optical anisotropy and, consequently, to birefringence, which strongly affects the Raman response. Because Raman scattering is fundamentally sensitive to the polarizability of a material, this anisotropy must be carefully accounted for in order to extract quantitative information - an effort that has only recently been shown to be feasible in such media. Here, we report Raman measurements from all three principal crystal planes $(100)$, $(010)$, and $(001)$, as well as from the $(\overline{2}01)$-plane of a $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ single crystal. By combining polarization angle-resolved Raman spectroscopy (PARRS) with a newly developed fitting procedure and explicitly accounting for birefringence, we achieve full spectral separation and quantitatively determine the energies and relative Raman tensor elements of all 15 Raman-active modes.

Thermal conductivity and tunable thermal anisotropy of magnetic CrSBr monolayer

We present first-principles calculations of the thermal conductivity, ${\bm κ}$, of monolayer CrSBr, a van der Waals magnetic 2D material. We find a considerable thermal anisotropy, with a ratio $κ_{xx}/κ_{yy}$ of around 1.8. The anisotropy stems from a combined effect of phonon velocities and lifetimes and can be tuned by controlling the flake size by suppressing long mean path phonons.

Room-temperature anisotropic in-plane spin dynamics in graphene induced by PdSe$_2$ proximity

Van der Waals heterostructures offer a versatile platform for tailoring electrical, magnetic, optical, and spin transport properties of materials through proximity effects. Notably, hexagonal transition metal dichalcogenides have been shown to induce valley-Zeeman spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in graphene, resulting in significant spin lifetime anisotropy between in-plane and out-of-plane spin orientations. However, in-plane lifetimes remain isotropic due to the inherent threefold symmetry of the heterostructure. Here, we demonstrate that pentagonal PdSe$_2$, characterised by unique in-plane anisotropy, induces an unprecedented gate-tunable SOC in graphene. Our measurements reveal a remarkable 10-fold modulation of the spin lifetime for spins oriented within the graphene plane at room temperature. Moreover, the directional dependence of the spin lifetimes, along the three spatial directions, suggests the existence of a persistent in-plane spin texture component that dominates the spin dynamics. These findings deepen our understanding of spin dynamics in van der Waals heterostructures and open avenues for designing and engineering novel topological phases in graphene-based heterostructures within the strong SOC regime.

Observation of second sound in a rapidly varying temperature field in Ge

Second sound is known as the thermal transport regime where heat is carried by temperature waves. Its experimental observation was previously restricted to a small number of materials, usually in rather narrow temperature windows. We show that it is possible to overcome these limitations by driving the system with a rapidly varying temperature field. This effect is demonstrated in bulk Ge between 7 kelvin and room temperature, studying the phase lag of the thermal response under a harmonic high frequency external thermal excitation, addressing the relaxation time and the propagation velocity of the heat waves. These results provide a new route to investigate the potential of wave-like heat transport in almost any material, opening opportunities to control heat through its oscillatory nature.
