Measuring Reionization, Neutrino Mass, and Cosmic Inflation with BFORE

BFORE is a NASA high-altitude ultra-long-duration balloon mission proposed to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) across half the sky during a 28-day mid-latitude flight launched from Wanaka, New Zealand. With the unique access to large angular scales and high frequencies provided by the balloon platform, BFORE will significantly improve measurements of the optical depth to reionization tau, breaking parameter degeneracies needed for a measurement of neutrino mass with the CMB. The large angular scale data will enable BFORE to hunt for the large-scale gravitational wave B-mode signal, as well as the degree-scale signal, each at the r~0.01 level. The balloon platform allows BFORE to map Galactic dust foregrounds at frequencies where they dominate, in order to robustly separate them from CMB signals measured by BFORE, in addition to complementing data from ground-based telescopes. The combination of frequencies will also lead to velocity measurements for thousands of galaxy clusters, as well as probing how star-forming galaxies populate dark matter halos. The mission will be the first near-space use of TES multichroic detectors (150/217 GHz and 280/353 GHz bands) using highly-multiplexed mSQUID microwave readout, raising the technical readiness level of both technologies.

Stability results, almost global generalized Beltrami fields and applications to vortex structures in the Euler equations

Strong Beltrami fields have long played a key role in fluid mechanics and magnetohydrodynamics. In particular, they are the kind of stationary solutions of the Euler equations where one has been able to show the existence of vortex structures (vortex tubes and vortex lines) of arbitrarily complicated topology. On the contrary, there are very few results about the existence of generalized Beltrami fields, that is, divergence-free fields whose curl is the field itself times a non-constant function. In fact, generalized Beltrami fields (which are also stationary solutions to the Euler equations) have been recently shown to be rare, in the sense that for "most" proportionality factors there are no nontrivial Beltrami fields of high enough regularity (e.g., of class $C^{6,α}$), not even locally. We show that, nevertheless, there are "many" Beltrami fields with non-constant factor, even realizing arbitrarily complicated vortex structures. The core results are an "almost global" stability theorem for strong Beltrami fields, which ensures that a global strong Beltrami field with suitable decay at infinity can be perturbed to get "many" Beltrami fields with non-constant factor of arbitrarily high regularity and defined in the exterior of an arbitrarily small ball, and a "local" stability theorem for generalized Beltrami fields, which is an analogous perturbative result that is valid for any kind of Beltrami field (not just with a constant factor) but only applies to small enough domains. The proof relies on an iterative scheme of Grad-Rubin type. For this purpose, we study the Neumann problem for the inhomogeneous Beltrami equation in exterior domains via a boundary integral equation method and we obtain Hölder estimates, a sharp decay at infinity and some compactness properties for these sequences of approximate solutions.

A cryogenic rotation stage with a large clear aperture for the half-wave plates in the Spider instrument

We describe the cryogenic half-wave plate rotation mechanisms built for and used in Spider, a polarization-sensitive balloon-borne telescope array that observed the Cosmic Microwave Background at 95 GHz and 150 GHz during a stratospheric balloon flight from Antarctica in January 2015. The mechanisms operate at liquid helium temperature in flight. A three-point contact design keeps the mechanical bearings relatively small but allows for a large (305 mm) diameter clear aperture. A worm gear driven by a cryogenic stepper motor allows for precise positioning and prevents undesired rotation when the motors are depowered. A custom-built optical encoder system monitors the bearing angle to an absolute accuracy of +/- 0.1 degrees. The system performed well in Spider during its successful 16 day flight.

BFORE: The B-mode Foreground Experiment

The B-mode Foreground Experiment (BFORE) is a proposed NASA balloon project designed to make optimal use of the sub-orbital platform by concentrating on three dust foreground bands (270, 350, and 600 GHz) that complement ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) programs. BFORE will survey ~1/4 of the sky with 1.7 - 3.7 arcminute resolution, enabling precise characterization of the Galactic dust that now limits constraints on inflation from CMB B-mode polarization measurements. In addition, BFORE's combination of frequency coverage, large survey area, and angular resolution enables science far beyond the critical goal of measuring foregrounds. BFORE will constrain the velocities of thousands of galaxy clusters, provide a new window on the cosmic infrared background, and probe magnetic fields in the interstellar medium. We review the BFORE science case, timeline, and instrument design, which is based on a compact off-axis telescope coupled to >10,000 superconducting detectors.

Qualitative behavior for flux-saturated mechanisms: Traveling waves, waiting time and smoothing effects

This paper is devoted to the analysis of qualitative properties of flux-saturated type operators in dimension one. Specifically, we study regularity properties and smoothing effects, discontinuous interfaces, the existence of traveling wave profiles, sub- and super-solutions and waiting time features. The aim of the paper is to better understand these kind of phenomena throughout two prototypic operators: The relativistic heat equation and the porous media flux-limited equation. As an important consequence of our results we deduce that solutions to the one-dimensional relativistic heat equation become smooth inside their support on the long time run.

Empirical modelling of the BLASTPol achromatic half-wave plate for precision submillimetre polarimetry

A cryogenic achromatic half-wave plate (HWP) for submillimetre astronomical polarimetry has been designed, manufactured, tested, and deployed in the Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol). The design is based on the five-slab Pancharatnam recipe and it works in the wavelength range 200-600 micron, making it the broadest-band HWP built to date at (sub)millimetre wavelengths. The frequency behaviour of the HWP has been fully characterised at room and cryogenic temperatures with incoherent radiation from a polarising Fourier transform spectrometer. We develop a novel empirical model, complementary to the physical and analytical ones available in the literature, that allows us to recover the HWP Mueller matrix and phase shift as a function of frequency and extrapolated to 4K. We show that most of the HWP non-idealities can be modelled by quantifying one wavelength-dependent parameter, the position of the HWP equivalent axes, which is then readily implemented in a map-making algorithm. We derive this parameter for a range of spectral signatures of input astronomical sources relevant to BLASTPol, and provide a benchmark example of how our method can yield improved accuracy on measurements of the polarisation angle on the sky at submillimetre wavelengths.

On the relativistic BGK-Boltzmann model: asymptotics and hydrodynamics

The generalization of the BGK relaxation model to the special relativity setting is revisited here. We deal with several issues related to this relativistic kinetic model which seem to have been overlooked in the previous physical literature, including the unique determination of associated physical parameters, classical, ultra-relativistic and hydrodynamical limits, maximum entropy principles and the analysis of the linearized operator.

On a nonlinear flux--limited equation arising in the transport of morphogens

Motivated by a mathematical model for the transport of morphogenes in biological systems, we study existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions for a mixed initial-boundary value problem associated with a nonlinear flux--limited diffusion system. From a mathematical point of view the problem behaves more as an hyperbolic system that a parabolic one.

Virial inequalities for steady states in relativistic galactic dynamics

It is well known that steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, a widely used model in non-relativistic galactic dynamics, have negative energy. In this paper we derive the analogous property for two relativistic generalizations of the Vlasov-Poisson system: The Nordström-Vlasov system and the Einstein-Vlasov system. In the first case we show that the energy of steady states is bounded by their total rest mass; in the second case, where we also assume spherical symmetry, we prove an inequality which involves not only the energy and the rest mass, but also the central redshift. In both cases the proof makes use of integral inequalities satisfied by time depedent solutions and which are derived using the vector fields multipliers method.

Dispersive behavior in Galactic Dynamics

The purpose of this paper is to study the relations between different concepts of dispersive solution for the Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case. Moreover we give necessary conditions for the existence of partially and totally dispersive solutions and a sufficient condition for the occurence of statistical dispersion. These conditions take the form of inequalities involving the energy, the mass and the momentum of the solution. Examples of dispersive and non-dispersive solutions--steady states, periodic solutions and virialized solutions--are also considered.

Asymptotic behavior and orbital stability of galactic dynamics in relativistic scalar gravity

The Nordström-Vlasov system is a relativistic Lorentz invariant generalization of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case. The asymptotic behavior of solutions and the non-linear stability of steady states are investigated. It is shown that solutions of the Nordström-Vlasov system with energy grater or equal to the mass satisfy a dispersion estimate in terms of the conformal energy. When the energy is smaller than the mass, we prove existence and non-linear (orbital) stability of a class of static solutions (isotropic polytropes) against general perturbations. The proof of orbital stability is based on a variational problem associated to the minimization of the energy functional under suitable constraints.
