Geometric limits of knot complements

We prove that any complete hyperbolic 3--manifold with finitely generated fundamental group, with a single topological end, and which embeds into $\BS^3$ is the geometric limit of a sequence of hyperbolic knot complements in $\BS^3$. In particular, we derive the existence of hyperbolic knot complements which contain balls of arbitrarily large radius. We also show that a complete hyperbolic 3--manifold with two convex cocompact ends cannot be a geometric limit of knot complements in $\BS^3$.

Injections of mapping class groups

We construct new monomorphisms between mapping class groups of surfaces. The first family of examples injects the mapping class group of a closed surface into that of a different closed surface. The second family of examples are defined on mapping class groups of once-punctured surfaces and have quite curious behaviour. For instance, some pseudo-Anosov elements are mapped to multi-twists. Neither of these two types of phenomena were previously known to be possible although the constructions are elementary.

A characterization of round spheres in terms of blocking light

A closed Riemannian manifold is said to have cross blocking if whenever distinct points p and q are at distance less than the diameter, all light rays from p can be shaded away from q with at most two point shades. Similarly, a closed Riemannian manifold is said to have sphere blocking if for each point p, all the light rays from p are shaded away from p by a single point shade. We prove that Riemannian manifolds with cross and sphere blocking are isometric to round spheres.

The spine which was no spine

Let T_n be the Teichmueller space of flat metrics on the n-dimensional torus and identify SL(n,Z) with the corresponding mapping class group. We prove that the subset Y consisting of those points at which the systoles generate the fundamental group of the torus is, for n > 4, not contractible. In particular, Y is not an SL(n,Z)-equivariant deformation retract of T_n.

Finitely generated subgroups of lattices in PSL(2,C)

Let G be a lattice in PSL(2,C). The pro-normal topology on G is defined by taking all cosets of non-trivial normal subgroups as a basis. This topology is finer than the pro-finite topology, but it is not discrete. We prove that every finitely generated subgroup H<G is closed in the pro-normal topology. As a corollary we deduce that if M is a maximal subgroup of a lattice in PSL(2,C) then either M is finite index or M is not finitely generated.

Tameness on the boundary and Ahlfors' measure conjecture

Let N be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold that is an algebraic limit of geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We show N is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact 3-manifold, or tame, if one of the following conditions holds: (1) N has non-empty conformal boundary, (2) N is not homotopy equivalent to a compression body, or (3) N is a strong limit of geometrically finite manifolds. The first case proves Ahlfors' measure conjecture for Kleinian groups in the closure of the geometrically finite locus: given any algebraic limit G of geometrically finite Kleinian groups, the limit set of G is either of Lebesgue measure zero or all of the Riemann sphere. Thus, Ahlfors' conjecture is reduced to the density conjecture of Bers, Sullivan, and Thurston.
