The Background Model of the Medium Energy X-ray telescope of Insight-HXMT

The Medium Energy X-ray Telescope (ME) is one of the main payloads of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (dubbed as Insight-HXMT). The background of Insight-HXMT/ME is mainly caused by the environmental charged particles and the background intensity is modulated remarkably by the geomagnetic field, as well as the geographical location. At the same geographical location, the background spectral shape is stable but the intensity varies with the level of the environmental charged particles. In this paper, we develop a model to estimate the ME background based on the ME database that is established with the two-year blank sky observations of the high Galactic latitude. In this model, the entire geographical area covered by Insight-HXMT is divided into grids of $5^{\circ}\times5^{\circ}$ in geographical coordinate system. For each grid, the background spectral shape can be obtained from the background database and the intensity can be corrected by the contemporary count rate of the blind FOV detectors. Thus the background spectrum can be obtained by accumulating the background of all the grids passed by Insight-HXMT during the effective observational time. The model test with the blank sky observations shows that the systematic error of the background estimation in $8.9-44.0$ keV is $\sim1.3\%$ for a pointing observation with an average exposure $\sim5.5$ ks. We also find that the systematic error is anti-correlated with the exposure, which indicates the systematic error is partly contributed by the statistical error of count rate measured by the blind FOV detectors.

Studies on the time response distribution of Insigh}-HXMT/LE

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.

Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst

The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to $\rm 150~keV$. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with $B\rm \sim 10^{13}~G$, $D\rm \sim 6~kpc$ and peak luminosity of $\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1}$ which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star.

The localization of single pulse in VLBI observation

In our previous work, we propose a cross spectrum based method to extract single pulse signals from RFI contaminated data, which is originated from geodetic VLBI postprocessing. This method fully utilizes fringe phase information of the cross spectrum and hence maximizes signal power, however the localization was not discussed in that work yet. As the continuation of that work, in this paper, we further study how to localize single pulses using astrometric solving method. Assuming that the burst is a point source, we derive the burst position by solving a set of linear equations given the relation between residual delay and offset to a priori position. We find that the single pulse localization results given by both astrometric solving and radio imaging are consistent within 3 sigma level. Therefore we claim that it is possible to derive the position of a single pulse with reasonable precision based on only 3 or even 2 baselines with 4 milliseconds integration. The combination of cross spectrum based detection and the localization proposed in this work then provide a thorough solution for searching single pulse in VLBI observation. According to our calculation, our pipeline gives comparable accuracy as radio imaging pipeline. Moreover, the computational cost of our pipeline is much smaller, which makes it more practical for FRB search in regular VLBI observation. The pipeline is now publicly available and we name it as "VOLKS", which is the acronym of "VLBI Observation for frb Localization Keen Searcher".

An Integrated Inverse Space Sparse Representation Framework for Tumor Classification

Microarray gene expression data-based tumor classification is an active and challenging issue. In this paper, an integrated tumor classification framework is presented, which aims to exploit information in existing available samples, and focuses on the small sample problem and unbalanced classification problem. Firstly, an inverse space sparse representation based classification (ISSRC) model is proposed by considering the characteristics of gene-based tumor data, such as sparsity and a small number of training samples. A decision information factors (DIF)-based gene selection method is constructed to enhance the representation ability of the ISSRC. It is worth noting that the DIF is established from reducing clinical misdiagnosis rate and dimension of small sample data. For further improving the representation ability and classification stability of the ISSRC, feature learning is conducted on the selected gene subset. The feature learning method is constructed by complementing the advantages of non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) and deep learning. Without confusion, the ISSRC combined with gene selection and feature learning is called the integrated ISSRC, whose stability, optimization and the corresponding convergence are analyzed. Extensive experiments on six public microarray gene expression datasets show the integrated ISSRC-based tumor classification framework is superior to classical and state-of-the-art methods. There are significant improvements in classification accuracy, specificity and sensitivity, whether there is a tumor in the early diagnosis, what kind of tumor, or whether metastasis occurs after tumor surgery.

First Investigation on the Radiation Field of the Gas-Filled Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum

A novel ignition hohlraum named three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) is designed for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. TACH is a kind of 6 laser entrance holes (LEHs) hohlraum, which is orthogonally jointed of three cylindrical hohlraums. The first experiment on the radiation field of TACH was performed on Shenguang III laser facility. 24 laser beams were elected and injected into 6 LEHs quasi-symmetrically. Total laser energy was about 59 kJ, and the peak radiation temperature reached about 192 eV. Radiation temperature and pinhole images in gas-filled hohlraum are largely identical but with minor differences with those in vacuum hohlraum. All laser energy can be totally delivered into hohlraum in 3 ns duration even without filled gas in the hohlraum of 1.4 mm diameter. Plasma filling cannot be obviously suppressed even with 0.5 atm pressure gas in the small hohlraum. Backscattering fractions of vacuum hohlraum and gas-filled hohlraum are both lower than 2%. Experimental study of this new kind of hohlraum can provide guidance for future target design and implosion experiment.

First Integrated Implosion Experiment of Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum at the SGIII Laser Facility

The first integrated implosion experiment of three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) was accomplished at the SGIII laser facility. 24 laser beams of the SGIII laser facility were carefully chosen and quasi-symmetrically injected into the TACH, in which a highly symmetric radiation filed was generated with a peak radiation temperature of ~190eV. Driven by the radiation field, the neutron yield of a deuterium gas filled capsule reached ~1e9, and the corresponding yield over clean (YOC) was ~40% for a convergence ratio (Cr) of ~17. The X-ray self-emission image of imploded capsule cores was nearly round, and the backscatter fraction of laser beams was less than 1.25%. This experiment preliminarily demonstrated the major performance of TACH, such as the robustness of symmetry, and a laser plasma instability (LPI) behavior similar to that of the outer ring of traditional cylindrical hohlraum.

Almost everywhere divergence of spherical harmonic expansions and equivalence of summation methods

We show that there exists an integrable function on the $n$-sphere $(n\ge 2)$, whose Cesàro (C,$\frac{n-1}{2}$) means with respect to the spherical harmonic expansion diverge unboundedly almost everywhere. By studying equivalence theorems, we also obtain the corresponding results for Riesz and Bochner-Riesz means. This extends results of Stein (1961) for flat tori and complements the work of Taibleson (1985) for spheres.

Low Rank Variation Dictionary and Inverse Projection Group Sparse Representation Model for Breast Tumor Classification

Sparse representation classification achieves good results by addressing recognition problem with sufficient training samples per subject. However, SRC performs not very well for small sample data. In this paper, an inverse-projection group sparse representation model is presented for breast tumor classification, which is based on constructing low-rank variation dictionary. The proposed low-rank variation dictionary tackles tumor recognition problem from the viewpoint of detecting and using variations in gene expression profiles of normal and patients, rather than directly using these samples. The inverse projection group sparsity representation model is constructed based on taking full using of exist samples and group effect of microarray gene data. Extensive experiments on public breast tumor microarray gene expression datasets demonstrate the proposed technique is competitive with state-of-the-art methods. The results of Breast-1, Breast-2 and Breast-3 databases are 80.81%, 89.10% and 100% respectively, which are better than the latest literature.

Fast Radio Burst Search: Cross Spectrum vs. Auto Spectrum Method

The search of fast radio burst (FRB) is a hot topic in current radio astronomy study. In this work, we carry out single pulse search for a VLBI pulsar observation data set using both auto spectrum and cross spectrum search method. The cross spectrum method is first proposed in Liu et al. (2018), which maximizes the signal power by fully utilizing the fringe phase information of the baseline cross spectrum. The auto spectrum search method is based on the popular pulsar software package PRESTO, which extracts single pulses from the auto spectrum of each station. According to our comparison, the cross spectrum method is able to enhance the signal power and therefore extract single pules from highly RFI contaminated data, which makes it possible to carry out FRB search in regular VLBI observations with the presence of RFIs.

A Fast Radio Burst Search Method for VLBI Observation

We introduce the cross spectrum based FRB (Fast Radio Burst) search method for VLBI observation. This method optimizes the fringe fitting scheme in geodetic VLBI data post processing, which fully utilizes the cross spectrum fringe phase information and therefore maximizes the power of single pulse signals. Working with cross spectrum greatly reduces the effect of radio frequency interference (RFI) compared with using auto spectrum. Single pulse detection confidence increases by cross identifying detections from multiple baselines. By combining the power of multiple baselines, we may improve the detection sensitivity. Our method is similar to that of coherent beam forming, but without the computational expense to form a great number of beams to cover the whole field of view of our telescopes. The data processing pipeline designed for this method is easy to implement and parallelize, which can be deployed in various kinds of VLBI observations. In particular, we point out that VGOS observations are very suitable for FRB search.

Electrically Pumped Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) Laser at Telecom Wavelengths

Semiconductor lasers capable of generating a vortex beam with a specific orbital angular momentum (OAM) order are highly attractive for applications ranging from nanoparticle manipulation, imaging and microscopy to fibre and quantum communications. In this work, an electrically pumped OAM laser operating at telecom wavelengths is fabricated by monolithically integrating an optical vortex emitter with a distributed feedback (DFB) laser on the same InGaAsP/InP epitaxial wafer. A single-step dry etching process is adopted to complete the OAM emitter, equipped with specially designed top gratings. The vortex beam emitted by the integrated laser is captured, and its OAM mode purity characterized. The electrically pumped OAM laser eliminates the external laser required by silicon- or silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based OAM emitters, thus demonstrating great potential for applications in communication systems and quantum domain.

Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of \textit{Insight}-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

The Fefferman-Stein type inequalities for the multilinear strong maximal functions

Let $\vecω=( ω_{1},...,ω_{m})$ be a multiple weight and $\{Ψ_{j}\}^{m}_{j=1}$ be a sequence of Young functions. Let $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{R}}^{\vecΨ}$ be the multilinear strong maximal function with Orlicz norms which is defined by $$\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{R}}^{\vecΨ}(\vec{f})(x)=\sup_{R\in \mathcal{R},R\ni x}\prod^{m}_{j=1}\|f_{j}\|_{Ψ_{j},R}$$ where the supremum is taken over all rectangles with sides parallel to the coordinate axes. If $Ψ_j(t)=t$, then $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{R}}^{\vec{t}}$ coincides with the multilinear strong mximal function $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{R}}$ defined and studied by Grafakos et al. In this paper, we first investigated the Fefferman-Stein type inequality for $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{R}}^{\vecΨ}$ when $\vecω$ satisfies the $A_{\infty,\mathcal{R}}$ condition. Then, for arbitrary $\vecω\geq 0$( each $ ω_{j}\ge 0$), the Fefferman-Stein type inequality for the multilinear strong maximal function $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{R}} $ associated with rectangles will be given.

Simulation of the In-flight Background for HXMT/HE

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) is a broad band X-ray astronomical satellite from 1 to 250 keV. Understanding the X-ray background in detail will help to achieve a good performance of the instrument. In this work, we make use of the mass modelling technique to estimate the background of High Energy Telescope (HE) aboard HXMT. It consists of three steps. First, we built a complete geometric model of HXMT. Then based on the investigation about the space environment concerning HXMT low-earth orbit, in our simulation we considered cosmic rays, cosmic X-ray background (CXB), South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) trapped particles, the albedo gamma and neutrons from interaction of cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere. Finally, the Shielding Physics List supplied by Geant4 collaborations was adopted. According to our simulation, (1) the total background of HXMT/HE is about 540 count/s on average over 20-250 keV energy band after 100 days in orbit; (2) the delayed component caused by cosmic rays and SAA trapped particles dominates the full energy band of HXMT/HE; (3) some emission lines are prominent in the background continuum spectrum and will be used for in-orbit calibration; (4) the estimated sensitivity is approximately 0.1 mCrab at 50 keV with an exposure of $10^{6}$ s.

Self-Assembly of Asymmetrically Interacting ABC Star Triblock Copolymer Melts

The phase behavior of asymmetrically interacting ABC star triblock copolymer melts is investigated by the self-consistent field theory (SCFT). Motivated by the experimental systems, in this study, we focus on the systems in which the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters satisfy $χ_{AC}>χ_{BC}\approx χ_{AB}$. Using various initialization strategies, a large number of periodic structures have been obtained in our calculations. A fourth-order pseudospectral algorithm combined with Anderson mixing method is used to compute the free energy of candidate structures carefully. The stability has been detailedly analyzed by splitting the free energy into internal and entropic parts. A complete and complex triangular phase diagram is presented for a model with $χ_{AC}>χ_{BC}= χ_{AB}$ in which fifteen ordered phases, including two-, and three-dimensional structures, have been predicted to be stable from the SCFT calculations. Generally speaking, with the asymmetrical interactions, the hierarchical structures tend to be formed near the B-rich corner of the triangular phase diagram. This work broadens the previous theoretical results from equal interaction systems to unequal interaction systems. The predicted phase behavior is in good agreement with experimental observations and previous theoretical results.

Reconstructing light curves from HXMT imaging observations

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) is a Chinese space telescope mission. It is scheduled for launch in 2015. The telescope will perform an all-sky survey in hard X-ray band (1 - 250 keV), a series of deep imaging observations of small sky regions as well as pointed observations. In this work we present a conceptual method to reconstruct light curves from HXMT imaging observation directly, in order to monitor time-varying objects such as GRB, AXP and SGR in hard X-ray band with HXMT imaging observations.
