The symplectic reduced spaces of a Poisson action

During the last thirty years, symplectic or Marsden--Weinstein reduction has been a major tool in the construction of new symplectic manifolds and in the study of mechanical systems with symmetry. This procedure has been traditionally associated to the canonical action of a Lie group on a symplectic manifold, in the presence of a momentum map. In this note we show that the symplectic reduction phenomenon has much deeper roots. More specifically, we will find symplectically reduced spaces purely within the Poisson category under hypotheses that do not necessarily imply the existence of a momentum map. On other words, the right category to obtain symplectically reduced spaces is that of Poisson manifolds acted canonically upon by a Lie group.

The optimal momentum map

The presence of symmetries in a Hamiltonian system usually implies the existence of conservation laws that are represented mathematically in terms of the dynamical preservation of the level sets of a momentum mapping. The symplectic or Marsden--Weinstein reduction procedure takes advantage of this and associates to the original system a new Hamiltonian system with fewer degrees of freedom. However, in a large number of situations, this standard approach does not work or is not efficient enough, in the sense that it does not use all the information encoded in the symmetry of the system. In this work, a new momentum map will be defined that is capable of overcoming most of the problems encountered in the traditional approach.

Singular dual pairs

We generalize the notions of dual pair and polarity introduced by S. Lie and A. Weinstein in order to accommodate very relevant situations where the application of these ideas is desirable. The new notion of polarity is designed to deal with the loss of smoothness caused by the presence of singularities that are encountered in many problems. We study in detail the relation between the newly introduced dual pairs, the quantum notion of Howe pair, and the symplectic leaf correspondence of Poisson manifolds in duality. The dual pairs arising in the context of symmetric Poisson manifolds are treated with special attention. We show that in this case and under very reasonable hypotheses we obtain a particularly well behaved kind of dual pairs that we call von Neumann pairs. Some of the ideas that we present in this paper shed some light on the so called optimal momentum maps.

A symplectic slice theorem

We provide a model for an open invariant neighborhood of any orbit in a symplectic manifold endowed with a canonical proper symmetry. Our results generalize the constructions of Marle and Guillemin and Sternberg for canonical symmetries that have an associated momentum map. In these papers the momentum map played a crucial role in the construction of the tubular model. The present work shows that in the construction of the tubular model it can be used the so called Chu map instead, which exists for any canonical action, unlike the momentum map. Hamilton's equations for any invariant Hamiltonian function take on a particularly simple form in these tubular variables. As an application we will find situations, that we will call tubewise Hamiltonian, in which the existence of a standard momentum map in invariant neighborhoods is guaranteed.

Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation with symmetry

In this paper we study the appearance of branches of relative periodic orbits in Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation processes in the presence of compact symmetry groups that do not generically exist in the dissipative framework. The theoretical study is illustrated with several examples.

Bifurcation of relative equilibria in mechanical systems with symmetry

The relative equilibria of a symmetric Hamiltonian dynamical system are the critical points of the so-called augmented Hamiltonian. The underlying geometric structure of the system is used to decompose the critical point equations and construct a collection of implicitly defined functions and reduced equations describing the set of relative equilibria in a neighborhood of a given relative equilibrium. The structure of the reduced equations is studied in a few relevant situations. In particular, a persistence result of Lerman and Singer [LS98] is generalized to the framework of Abelian proper actions. Also, a Hamiltonian version of the Equivariant Branching Lemma and a study of bifurcations with maximal isotropy are presented. An elementary example is presented to illustrate the use of this approach.
