Periodic Anderson model with electron-phonon correlated conduction band

This paper reports dynamical mean field calculations for the periodic Anderson model in which the conduction band is coupled to phonons. Motivated in part by recent attention to the role of phonons in the $γ$-$α$ transition in Ce, this model yields a rich and unexpected phase diagram which is of intrinsic interest. Specifically, above a critical value of the electron-phonon interaction, a first order transition with two coexisting phases develops in the temperature-hybridization plane, which terminates at a second order critical point. The coexisting phases display the familiar Kondo screened and local moment character, yet they also exhibit pronounced polaronic and bipolaronic properties, respectively.

The response to dynamical modulation of the optical lattice for fermions in the Hubbard model

Fermionic atoms in a periodic optical lattice provide a realization of the single-band Hubbard model. Using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations along with the Maximum Entropy Method, we evaluate the effect of a time-dependent perturbative modulation of the optical lattice amplitude on atomic correlations, revealed in the fraction of doubly-occupied sites. Our treatment extends previous approaches which neglected the time dependence of the on-site interaction, and shows that this term changes the results in a quantitatively significant way. The effect of modulation depends strongly on the filling-- the response of the double occupation is significantly different in the half-filled Mott insulator from the doped Fermi liquid region.

Proximity of the Superconducting Dome and the Quantum Critical Point in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

We use the dynamical cluster approximation to understand the proximity of the superconducting dome to the quantum critical point in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. In a BCS formalism, $T_c$ may be enhanced through an increase in the d-wave pairing interaction ($V_d$) or the bare pairing susceptibility ($χ_{0d}$). At optimal doping, where $V_d$ is revealed to be featureless, we find a power-law behavior of $χ_{0d}(ω=0)$, replacing the BCS log, and strongly enhanced $T_c$. We suggest experiments to verify our predictions.

Dynamical Cluster Quantum Monte Carlo Study of the Single Particle Spectra of Strongly Interacting Fermion Gases

We study the single-particle spectral function of resonantly-interacting fermions in the unitary regime, as described by the three-dimensional attractive Hubbard model in the dilute limit. Our approach, based on the Dynamical Cluster Approximation and the Maximum Entropy Method, shows the emergence of a gap with decreasing temperature, as reported in recent cold-atom photoemission experiments, for coupling values that span the BEC-BCS crossover. By comparing the behavior of the spectral function to that of the imaginary time dynamical pairing susceptibility, we attribute the development of the gap to the formation of local bound atom pairs.

Nonlocal effects on magnetism in the diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}As

The magnetic properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga_{1-x}Mn_{x}As are studied within the dynamical cluster approximation. We use the k-dot-p Hamiltonian to describe the electronic structure of GaAs with spin-orbit coupling and strain effects. We show that nonlocal effects are essential for explaining the experimentally observed transition temperature and saturation magnetization. We also demonstrate that the cluster anisotropy is very strong and induces rotational frustration and a cube-edge direction magnetic anisotropy at low temperature. With this, we explain the temperature-driven spin reorientation in this system.

Nature of the Perpendicular-to-Parallel Spin Reorientation in a Mn-doped GaAs Quantum Well: Canting or Phase Separation?

It is well known that the magnetic anisotropy in a compressively-strained Mn-doped GaAs film changes from perpendicular to parallel with increasing hole concentration $p$. We study this reorientation transition at T=0 in a quantum well with Mn impurities confined to a single plane. With increasing $p$, the angle $θ$ that minimizes the energy $E$ increases continuously from 0 (perpendicular anisotropy) to $π/2$ (parallel anisotropy) within some range of $p$. The shape of $\Emin (p)$ suggests that the quantum well becomes phase separated with regions containing low hole concentrations and perpendicular moments interspersed with other regions containing high hole concentrations and parallel moments. However, due to the Coulomb energy cost associated with phase separation, the true magnetic state in the transition region is canted with $0 < θ< π/2$.

Transition Temperature of a Magnetic Semiconductor with Angular Momentum j

We employ dynamical mean-field theory to identify the materials properties that optimize Tc for a generalized double-exchange (DE) model. We reach the surprising conclusion that Tc achieves a maximum when the band angular momentum j equals 3/2 and when the masses in the 1/2 and 3/2 sub-bands are equal. However, we also find that Tc is significantly reduced as the ratio of the masses decreases from one. Consequently, the search for dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) materials with high Tc should proceed on two fronts. In semiconductors with p bands, such as the currently studied Mn-doped Ge and GaAs semiconductors, Tc may be optimized by tuning the band masses through strain engineering or artificial nanostructures. On the other hand, semiconductors with s or d bands with nearly equal effective masses might prove to have higher Tc's than p-band materials with disparate effective masses.

Thermodynamic Consistency of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory of the Double-Exchange Model

Although diagrammatic perturbation theory fails for the dynamical-mean field theory of the double-exchange model, the theory is nevertheless Phi-derivable and hence thermodynamically consistent, meaning that the same thermodynamic properties are obtained from either the partition function or the Green's function. We verify this consistency by evaluating the magnetic susceptibility and Curie temperature for any Hund's coupling.

Hartree-Fock energy of a density wave in a spin polarized two-dimensional electron gas

We calculate the Hartree-Fock energy of a density-wave in a spin polarized two-dimensional electron gas using a short-range repulsive interaction. We find that the stable ground state for a short-range potential is always either the paramagnetic state or the uniform ferromagnetic state. The energy of a density-wave state is, however, reduced by a factor proportional to (1 - zeta^2), where zeta is the polarization of the electron gas. Since this situation occurs in the most unfavorable conditions (short-range repulsive interaction) it is therefore conceivable that by including higher order many-body corrections to the interaction a density-wave ground state is indeed found to be stable.

Pair distribution function in a two-dimensional electron gas

We calculate the pair distribution function, $g(r)$, in a two-dimensional electron gas and derive a simple analytical expression for its value at the origin as a function of $r_s$. Our approach is based on solving the Schrödinger equation for the two-electron wave function in an appropriate effective potential, leading to results that are in good agreement with Quantum Monte Carlo data and with the most recent numerical calculations of $g(0)$. [C. Bulutay and B. Tanatar, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 65}, 195116 (2002)] We also show that the spin-up spin-down correlation function at the origin, $g_{\uparrow \downarrow}(0)$, is mainly independent of the degree of spin polarization of the electronic system.

Local field factors in a polarized two-dimensional electron gas

We derive approximate expressions for the static local field factors of a spin polarized two-dimensional electron gas which smoothly interpolate between their small- and large-wavevector asymptotic limits. For the unpolarized electron gas, the proposed analytical expressions reproduce recent diffusion Monte Carlo data. We find that the degree of spin polarization produces important modifications to the local factors of the minority spins, while the local field functions of the majority spins are less affected.

Effective electron-electron interaction in a two dimensional paramagnetic system

We analyze the effective electron-electron interaction in a two dimensional polarized paramagnetic system. The spin degree of freedom, s, is manifestly present in the expressions of spin dependent local field factors that describe the short range exchange (x) and correlation (c) effects. Starting from the exact asymptotic values of the local field correction functions for large and small momentum at zero frequency we obtain self-consistent expressions across the whole spectrum of momenta. Then, the effective interaction between two electrons with spins s and s' is calculated. We find that the four effective interactions, up-up, up-down, down-up and down-down, are different. We also obtain their qualitative dependence on the electronic density and polarization and note that these results are independent of the approximation used for the local field correction functions at intermediate momenta.

Reply to ``Comment on `Magnetic field effects on neutron diffraction in the antiferromagnetic phase of $UPt_3$'''

Fak, van Dijk and Wills (FDW) question our interpretation of elastic neutron-scattering experiments in the antiferromagnetic phase of UPt_3. They state that our analysis is incorrect because we average over magnetic structures that are disallowed by symmetry. We disagree with FDW and reply to their criticism. FDW also point out that we have mistaken the magnetic field direction in the experiment reported by N. H. van Dijk et al. [Phys. Rev. B 58, 3186 (1998)]. We correct this error and note that our previous conclusion is also valid for the correct field orientation.

Two-channel Kondo Lattice Model on a ladder studied by the Density Matrix Renormalization Group Method

Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method we study a two-channel Kondo lattice model on a half filled ladder. Our model involves an on-site s-wave and a nearest neighbor d-wave coupling between the local moments and the conduction electrons on the ladder. By changing the relative strength of the two Kondo interactions we examine the evolution of the system from a conventional Kondo insulator with a singlet at each site to a new kind of semimetallic state formed by overlapping of Zhang-Rice-like singlets. The DMRG is used to study how the spin and charge correlation functions evolve between these two regimes.

Magnetic Field Effects on Neutron Diffraction in the Antiferromagnetic Phase of $UPt_3$

We discuss possible magnetic structures in UPt$_3$ based on our analysis of elastic neutron-scattering experiments in high magnetic fields at temperatures $T<T_N$. The existing experimental data can be explained by a single-{\bf q} antiferromagnetic structure with three independent domains. For modest in-plane spin-orbit interactions, the Zeeman coupling between the antiferromagnetic order parameter and the magnetic field induces a rotation of the magnetic moments, but not an adjustment of the propagation vector of the magnetic order. A triple-{\bf q} magnetic structure is also consistent with neutron experiments, but in general leads to a non-uniform magnetization in the crystal. New experiments could decide between these structures.

Gap-anisotropic model for the narrow-gap Kondo insulators

A theory is presented which accounts for the dynamical generation of a hybridization gap with nodes in the Kondo insulating materials $CeNiSn$ and $CeRhSb$. We show that Hunds interactions acting on virtual $4f^2$ configurations of the cerium ion can act to dynamically select the shape of the cerium ion by generating a Weiss field which couples to the shape of the ion. In low symmetry crystals where the external crystal fields are negligible, this process selects a nodal Kondo semimetal state as the lowest energy configuration.
