$μ$SR evidence for the U(1) quantum spin liquid ground state in the triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$

Muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) experiments on single crystals of the structurally perfect triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ indicate the absence of both static long-range magnetic order and spin freezing down to 0.048 K in zero field. Below 0.4 K, the $μ^{+}$ spin relaxation rates, which are proportional to the dynamic correlation function of the Yb$^{3+}$ spins, exhibit temperature-independent plateaus. Same behavior is revealed by temperature-independent local susceptibilities extracted from the Knight shifts of the $μ^{+}$ spin rotation frequencies under a transverse field of 20 Oe. All these $μ$SR results unequivocally support the formation of a gapless U(1) quantum spin liquid ground state in the triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$.

The influence of the structural transition on magnetic fluctuations in NaFeAs

NaFeAs belongs to a class of Fe-based superconductors which parent compounds show separated structural and magnetic transitions. Effects of the structural transition on spin dynamics therefore can be investigated separately from the magnetic transition. A plateau in dynamic spin response is observed in a critical region around the structural transition temperature T_S. It is interpreted as due to the stiffening of spin fluctuations along the in-plane magnetic hard axis due to the dxz and dyz orbital ordering. The appearance of anisotropic spin dynamics in the critical region above the T_S at T* offers a dynamic magnetic scattering mechanism for anisotropic electronic properties in the commonly referred "nematic phase".

A single-crystal neutron diffraction study on magnetic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8

The magnetic structure of the spin-chain antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8 is determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction experiment. The system undergoes magnetic long range order below T_N = 4.96 K. The moment of 2.16μ_B per Co at 1.6 K in the screw chain running along the c axis alternates in the c-axis. The moments of neighboring screw chains are arranged antiferromagnetically along one in-plane axis and ferromagnetically along the other in-plane axis. This magnetic configuration breaks the 4-fold symmetry of the tetragonal crystal structure and leads to two equally populated magnetic twins with antiferromagnetic vector in the a or b axis. The very similar magnetic state to the isostructural BaCo2V2O8 warrants SrCo2V2O8 another interesting half-integer spin-chain antiferromagnet for investigation on quantum antiferromagnetism.

Simultaneous Occurrence of Multiferroism and the Short-Range Magnetic Order in DyFeO3

We report a combined neutron scattering and magnetization study on the multiferroic DyFeO3 which shows a very strong magnetoelectric effect. Applying magnetic field along the c-axis, the weak ferromagnetic order of the Fe ions is quickly recovered from a spin reorientation transition, and the long-range antiferromagnetic order of Dy becomes a short-range one. We found that the short-range order concurs with the multiferroic phase and is responsible for its sizable hysteresis. Our H-T phase diagram suggests that the strong magnetoelectric effect in DyFeO3 has to be understood with not only the weak ferromagnetism of Fe but also the short-range antiferromagnetic order of Dy.

Z Draconis with two companions in a 2:1 mean-motion resonance

All available mid-eclipse times of the eclipsing binary Z Draconis are analysed, and three sets of cyclic variations with periods of 20.1, 29.96 and 59.88 yr are found. The low-amplitude variations with the period of 20.1 yr may be attributed to the unavoidable and slight imperfection in the double-Keplerian model, which gives the periods of 29.96 and 59.88 yr. Interestingly, the Z Draconis system is close to a 2:1 mean-motion resonance, or 6:3:2 mean-motion resonance if the period of 20.1 yr is true. We also find that the best solutions tend to give the minimum eccentricities. Based on Kepler's third law, the outermost companion has the minimum mass of $\sim0.77M_{\bigodot}$, whereas the middle companion is an M dwarf star with a mass of $\sim0.40M_{\bigodot}$, suggesting that Z Draconis is a general N-body system.

Rare-earth triangular lattice spin liquid: a single-crystal study of YbMgGaO$_{4}$

YbMgGaO$_{4}$, a structurally perfect two-dimensional triangular lattice with odd number of electrons per unit cell and spin-orbit entangled effective spin-1/2 local moments of Yb$^{3+}$ ions, is likely to experimentally realize the quantum spin liquid ground state. We report the first experimental characterization of single crystal YbMgGaO$_{4}$ samples. Due to the spin-orbit entanglement, the interaction between the neighboring Yb$^{3+}$ moments depends on the bond orientations and is highly anisotropic in the spin space. We carry out the thermodynamic and the electron spin resonance measurements to confirm the anisotropic nature of the spin interaction as well as to quantitatively determine the couplings. Our result is a first step towards the theoretical understanding of the possible quantum spin liquid ground state in this system and sheds new lights on the search of quantum spin liquids in strong spin-orbit coupled insulators.

High-pressure single-crystal neutron scattering study of magnetic and Fe vacancy orders in (Tl,Rb)2Fe4Se5 superconductor

The magnetic and iron vacancy orders in superconducting (Tl,Rb)2Fe4Se5 single-crystals are investigated by using a high-pressure neutron diffraction technique. Similar to the temperature effect, the block antiferromagnetic order gradually decreases upon increasing pressure while the Fe vacancy superstructural order remains intact before its precipitous disappearance at the critical pressure Pc = 8.3 GPa. Combined with previously determined Pc for superconductivity, our phase diagram under pressure reveals the concurrence of the block AFM order, the iron vacancy order and superconductivity for the 245 superconductor. A synthesis of current experimental data in a coherent physical picture is attempted.
