Classifying log del Pezzo surfaces with torus action

We consider log del Pezzo surfaces coming with a non-trivial torus action. Such a surface is 1/k-log canonical if it allows a resolution of singularities with discrepanies all greater or equal to 1/k-1. We provide a concrete classification algorithm for fixed k and give explicit results for k=1, 2 and 3. This comprises in particular the cases of Gorenstein index 1, 2 and 3.

The automorphism group of a rational projective k*-surface

We consider possibly singular rational projective k*-surfaces and provide an explicit description of the unit component of the automorphism group in terms of isotropy group orders and intersection numbers of suitable invariant curves. As an application, we characterize the almost homogeneous rational projective k*-surfaces and we specify the two-dimensional groups acting almost transitively as well as the corresponding homogeneous spaces.

The anticanonical complex for non-degenerate toric complete intersections

The anticanonical complex generalizes the Fano polytope from toric geometry and has been used to study Fano varieties with torus action so far. We work out the case of complete intersections in toric varieties defined by non-degenerate systems of Laurent polynomials. As an application, we classify the terminal Fano threefolds that are embedded into a fake weighted projective space via a general system of Laurent polynomials.

On torus actions of higher complexity

We systematically produce algebraic varieties with torus action by constructing them as suitably embedded subvarieties of toric varieties. The resulting varieties admit an explicit treatment in terms of toric geometry and graded ring theory. Our approach extends existing constructions of rational varieties with torus action of complexity one and delivers all Mori dream spaces with torus action. We exhibit the example class of general arrangement varieties and obtain classification results in the case of complexity two and Picard number at most two, extending former work in complexity one.

On terminal Fano 3-folds with 2-torus action

We classify the terminal Fano threefolds of Picard number one that come with an effective action of a two-torus. Our approach applies also to higher dimensions and generalizes the correspondence between toric Fano varieties and lattice polytopes: to any Fano variety with a complete intersection Cox ring we associate its "anti canonical complex", which is a certain polyhedral complex living in the lattice of one parameter groups of an ambient toric variety. For resolutions constructed via the tropical variety, the lattice points inside the anticanonical complex control the discrepancies. This leads, for example, to simple characterizations of terminality and canonicity.

On intrinsic quadrics

An intrinsic quadric is a normal projective variety with a Cox ring defined by a single quadratic relation. We provide explicit descriptions of these varieties in the smooth case for small Picard numbers. As applications, we figure out in this setting the Fano examples and (affirmatively) test Fujita's base point free conjecture.

Log terminal singularities, platonic tuples and iteration of Cox rings

Looking at the well understood case of log terminal surface singularities, one observes that each of them is the quotient of a factorial one by a finite solvable group. The derived series of this group reflects an iteration of Cox rings of surface singularities. We extend this picture to log terminal singularities in any dimension coming with a torus action of complexity one. In this setting, the previously finite groups become solvable torus extensions. As explicit examples, we investigate compound du Val threefold singularities. We give a complete classification and exhibit all the possible chains of iterated Cox rings.

On iteration of Cox rings

We characterize all varieties with a torus action of complexity one that admit iteration of Cox rings.

Smooth projective varieties with a torus action of complexity 1 and Picard number 2

We give an explicit description of all smooth varieties with a torus action of complexity one having Picard number at most two. As a consequence, we classify in every dimension the smooth (almost) Fano varieties with a torus action of complexity one having Picard number two. It turns out that all the Fano examples are obtained via an iterated generalized cone construction from a series of smooth varieties of dimension at most seven.

On blowing up the weighted projective plane

We investigate the blow-up of a weighted projective plane at a general point. We provide criteria and algorithms for testing if the result is a Mori dream surface and we compute the Cox ring in several cases. Moreover applications to the study of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ are discussed.

Computing automorphisms of Mori dream spaces

We present an algorithm to compute the automorphism group of a Mori dream space. As an example calculation, we determine the automorphism groups of singular cubic surfaces with general parameters. The strategy is to study graded automorphisms of affine algebras graded by a finitely generated abelian groups and apply the results to the Cox ring. Besides the application to Mori dream spaces, our results could be used for symmetry based computing, e.g. for Gröbner bases or tropical varieties.

Non-complete rational T-varieties of complexity one

We consider rational varieties with a torus action of complexity one and extend the combinatorial approach via the Cox ring developed for the complete case in earlier work to the non-complete, e.g. affine, case. This includes in particular a description of all factorially graded affine algebras of complexity one with only constant homogeneous invertible elements in terms of canonical generators and relations.

A software package for Mori dream spaces

Mori dream spaces form a large example class of algebraic varieties, comprising the well known toric varieties. We provide a first software package for the explicit treatment of Mori dream spaces and demonstrate its use by presenting basic sample computations. The software package is accompanied by a Cox ring database which delivers defining data for Cox rings and Mori dream spaces in a suitable format. As an application of the package, we determine the common Cox ring for the symplectic resolutions of a certain quotient singularity investigated by Bellamy/Schedler and Donten-Bury/Wiśniewski.

Cox rings of cubic surfaces and Fano threefolds

We determine the Cox rings of the minimal resolutions of cubic surfaces with at most rational double points, of blow ups of the projective plane at non-general configurations of six points and of three dimensional smooth Fano varieties of Picard numbers one and two.

Computing Cox rings

We consider modifications, for example blow ups, of Mori dream spaces and provide algorithms for investigating the effect on the Cox ring, e.g. testing finite generation or computing an explicit presentation in terms of generators and relations. As a first application, we compute the Cox rings of all Gorenstein log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one. Moreover, we show computationally that all smooth rational surfaces of Picard number at most six are Mori dream surfaces and we provide explicit presentations of the Cox ring for those not admitting a torus action. Finally, we provide the Cox rings of projective spaces blown up at a certain special point configurations.
