From Quotes to Concepts: Axial Coding of Political Debates with Ensemble LMs

Axial coding is a commonly used qualitative analysis method that enhances document understanding by organizing sentence-level open codes into broader categories. In this paper, we operationalize axial coding with large language models (LLMs). Extending an ensemble-based open coding approach with an LLM moderator, we add an axial coding step that groups open codes into higher-order categories, transforming raw debate transcripts into concise, hierarchical representations. We compare two strategies: (i) clustering embeddings of code-utterance pairs using density-based and partitioning algorithms followed by LLM labeling, and (ii) direct LLM-based grouping of codes and utterances into categories. We apply our method to Dutch parliamentary debates, converting lengthy transcripts into compact, hierarchically structured codes and categories. We evaluate our method using extrinsic metrics aligned with human-assigned topic labels (ROUGE-L, cosine, BERTScore), and intrinsic metrics describing code groups (coverage, brevity, coherence, novelty, JSD divergence). Our results reveal a trade-off: density-based clustering achieves high coverage and strong cluster alignment, while direct LLM grouping results in higher fine-grained alignment, but lower coverage 20%. Overall, clustering maximizes coverage and structural separation, whereas LLM grouping produces more concise, interpretable, and semantically aligned categories. To support future research, we publicly release the full dataset of utterances and codes, enabling reproducibility and comparative studies.

Emergent Convergence in Multi-Agent LLM Annotation

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in collaborative settings, yet little is known about how they coordinate when treated as black-box agents. We simulate 7500 multi-agent, multi-round discussions in an inductive coding task, generating over 125000 utterances that capture both final annotations and their interactional histories. We introduce process-level metrics: code stability, semantic self-consistency, and lexical confidence alongside sentiment and convergence measures, to track coordination dynamics. To probe deeper alignment signals, we analyze the evolving geometry of output embeddings, showing that intrinsic dimensionality declines over rounds, suggesting semantic compression. The results reveal that LLM groups converge lexically and semantically, develop asymmetric influence patterns, and exhibit negotiation-like behaviors despite the absence of explicit role prompting. This work demonstrates how black-box interaction analysis can surface emergent coordination strategies, offering a scalable complement to internal probe-based interpretability methods.

Text Annotation via Inductive Coding: Comparing Human Experts to LLMs in Qualitative Data Analysis

This paper investigates the automation of qualitative data analysis, focusing on inductive coding using large language models (LLMs). Unlike traditional approaches that rely on deductive methods with predefined labels, this research investigates the inductive process where labels emerge from the data. The study evaluates the performance of six open-source LLMs compared to human experts. As part of the evaluation, experts rated the perceived difficulty of the quotes they coded. The results reveal a peculiar dichotomy: human coders consistently perform well when labeling complex sentences but struggle with simpler ones, while LLMs exhibit the opposite trend. Additionally, the study explores systematic deviations in both human and LLM generated labels by comparing them to the golden standard from the test set. While human annotations may sometimes differ from the golden standard, they are often rated more favorably by other humans. In contrast, some LLMs demonstrate closer alignment with the true labels but receive lower evaluations from experts.

Half-life of Youtube News Videos: Diffusion Dynamics and Predictive Factors

Consumption of YouTube news videos significantly shapes public opinion and political narratives. While prior works have studied the longitudinal dissemination dynamics of YouTube News videos across extended periods, limited attention has been paid to the short-term trends. In this paper, we investigate the early-stage diffusion patterns and dispersion rate of news videos on YouTube, focusing on the first 24 hours. To this end, we introduce and analyze a rich dataset of over 50,000 videos across 75 countries and six continents. We provide the first quantitative evaluation of the 24-hour half-life of YouTube news videos as well as identify their distinct diffusion patterns. According to the findings, the average 24-hour half-life is approximately 7 hours, with substantial variance both within and across countries, ranging from as short as 2 hours to as long as 15 hours. Additionally, we explore the problem of predicting the latency of news videos' 24-hour half-lives. Leveraging the presented datasets, we train and contrast the performance of 6 different models based on statistical as well as Deep Learning techniques. The difference in prediction results across the models is traced and analyzed. Lastly, we investigate the importance of video- and channel-related predictors through Explainable AI (XAI) techniques. Just Another Hour on TikTok: ID sampling to obtain a complete slice of TikTok

TikTok is now a massive platform, and has a deep impact on global events. Despite preliminary studies, issues remain in determining fundamental characteristics of the platform. We develop a method to extract a representative sample of >99% of posts from a given time range on TikTok, and use it to collect all posts from a full hour on the platform, alongside all posts from a single minute from each hour of a day. Through this, we obtain post metadata, video media, and comments from a close-to-complete slice of TikTok, and report the critical statistics of the platform. Notably, we estimate a total of 269 million posts produced on the day we looked at, that 18% of videos on the platform feature children, and that at least 0.5% of posts contain artificial intelligence-generated content.

Reddit Rehab: User Migration in Response to Mobile Client Shutdowns

This paper investigates the behavior of Reddit users who relied on alternative mobile apps, such as Apollo and RiF, before and after their forced shutdown by Reddit on July 1, 2023. The announcement of the shutdown led many observers to predict significant negative consequences, such as mass migration away from the platform. Using data from January to November 2023, we analyze user engagement and migration rates for users of these alternative clients before and after the forced discontinuation of their apps. We find that 22% of alternative client users permanently left Reddit as a result, and 45% of the users who openly threatened to leave if the changes were enacted followed through with their threats. Overall, we find that the shutdown of third-party apps had no discernible impact on overall platform activity. While the preceding protests were severe, ultimately for most users the cost of switching to the official client was likely far less than the effort required to switch to an entirely different platform. Scientific attention has increased to understand the contributing factors and effects of migration between online platforms, but real-world examples with available data remain rare. Our study addresses this by examining a large-scale online migratory movement.

The Role of Likes: How Online Feedback Impacts Users' Mental Health

Social media usage has been shown to have both positive and negative consequences for users' mental health. Several studies indicated that peer feedback plays an important role in the relationship between social media use and mental health. In this research, we analyse the impact of receiving online feedback on users' emotional experience, social connectedness and self-esteem. In an experimental study, we let users interact with others on a Facebook-like system over the course of a week while controlling for the amount of positive reactions they receive from their peers. We find that experiencing little to no reaction from others does not only elicit negative emotions and stress amongst users, but also induces low levels of self-esteem. In contrast, receiving much positive online feedback, evokes feelings of social connectedness and reduces overall loneliness. On a societal level, our study can help to better understand the mechanisms through which social media use impacts mental health in a positive or negative way. On a methodological level, we provide a new open-source tool for designing and conducting social media experiments.

Temporally Stable Multilayer Network Embeddings: A Longitudinal Study of Russian Propaganda

Russian propaganda outlet RT (formerly, Russia Today) produces content in seven languages. There is ample evidence that RT's communication techniques differ for different language audiences. In this article, we offer the first comprehensive analysis of RT's multi-lingual article collection, analyzing all 2.4 million articles available on the online platform from 2006 until 06/2023. Annual semantic networks are created from the co-occurrence of the articles' tags. Within one language, we use AlignedUMAP to get stable inter-temporal embeddings. Between languages, we propose a new method to align multiple, sparsely connected networks in an intermediate representation before projecting them into the final embedding space. With respect to RT's communication strategy, our findings hint at a lack of a coherent strategy in RT's targeting of audiences in different languages, evident through differences in tag usage, clustering patterns, and uneven shifts in the prioritization of themes within language versions. Although identified clusters of tags align with the key themes in Russian propaganda, such as Ukraine, foreign affairs, Western countries, and the Middle East, we have observed significant differences in the attention given to specific issues across languages that are rather reactive to the information environment than representing a cohesive approach.

Measuring Teachers' Visual Expertise Using the Gaze Relational Index Based on Real-world Eye-tracking Data and Varying Velocity Thresholds

This article adds to the understanding of teachers' visual expertise by measuring visual information processing in real-world classrooms (mobile eye-tracking) with the newly introduced Gaze Relational Index (GRI) metric, which is defined as the ratio of mean fixation duration to mean fixation number. In addition, the aim was to provide a methodological contribution to future research by showing to what extent the selected configurations (i.e. varying velocity thresholds and fixation merging) of the eye movement event detection algorithm for detecting fixations and saccades influence the results of eye-tracking studies. Our study leads to two important take-home messages: First, by following a novice-expert paradigm (2 novice teachers & 2 experienced teachers), we found that the GRI can serve as a sensitive measure of visual expertise. As hypothesized, experienced teachers' GRI was lower, suggesting that their more fine-graded organization of domain-specific knowledge allows them to fixate more rapidly and frequently in the classroom. Second, we found that the selected velocity threshold parameter alter and, in the worst case, bias the results of an eye-tracking study. Therefore, in the interest of further generalizability of the results within visual expertise research, we emphasize that it is highly important to report configurations that are relevant for the identification of eye movements.

This Sample seems to be good enough! Assessing Coverage and Temporal Reliability of Twitter's Academic API

Because of its willingness to share data with academia and industry, Twitter has been the primary social media platform for scientific research as well as for consulting businesses and governments in the last decade. In recent years, a series of publications have studied and criticized Twitter's APIs and Twitter has partially adapted its existing data streams. The newest Twitter API for Academic Research allows to "access Twitter's real-time and historical public data with additional features and functionality that support collecting more precise, complete, and unbiased datasets." The main new feature of this API is the possibility of accessing the full archive of all historic Tweets. In this article, we will take a closer look at the Academic API and will try to answer two questions. First, are the datasets collected with the Academic API complete? Secondly, since Twitter's Academic API delivers historic Tweets as represented on Twitter at the time of data collection, we need to understand how much data is lost over time due to Tweet and account removal from the platform. Our work shows evidence that Twitter's Academic API can indeed create (almost) complete samples of Twitter data based on a wide variety of search terms. We also provide evidence that Twitter's data endpoint v2 delivers better samples than the previously used endpoint v1.1. Furthermore, collecting Tweets with the Academic API at the time of studying a phenomenon rather than creating local archives of stored Tweets, allows for a straightforward way of following Twitter's developer agreement. Finally, we will also discuss technical artifacts and implications of the Academic API. We hope that our work can add another layer of understanding of Twitter data collections leading to more reliable studies of human behavior via social media data.

Just Another Day on Twitter: A Complete 24 Hours of Twitter Data

At the end of October 2022, Elon Musk concluded his acquisition of Twitter. In the weeks and months before that, several questions were publicly discussed that were not only of interest to the platform's future buyers, but also of high relevance to the Computational Social Science research community. For example, how many active users does the platform have? What percentage of accounts on the site are bots? And, what are the dominating topics and sub-topical spheres on the platform? In a globally coordinated effort of 80 scholars to shed light on these questions, and to offer a dataset that will equip other researchers to do the same, we have collected all 375 million tweets published within a 24-hour time period starting on September 21, 2022. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first complete 24-hour Twitter dataset that is available for the research community. With it, the present work aims to accomplish two goals. First, we seek to answer the aforementioned questions and provide descriptive metrics about Twitter that can serve as references for other researchers. Second, we create a baseline dataset for future research that can be used to study the potential impact of the platform's ownership change.

The Half-Life of a Tweet

Twitter has started to share an impression_count variable as part of the available public metrics for every Tweet collected with Twitter's APIs. With the information about how often a particular Tweet has been shown to Twitter users at the time of data collection, we can learn important insights about the dissemination process of a Tweet by measuring its impression count repeatedly over time. With our preliminary analysis, we can show that on average the peak of impressions per second is 72 seconds after a Tweet was sent and that after 24 hours, no relevant number of impressions can be observed for ~95% of all Tweets. Finally, we estimate that the median half-life of a Tweet, i.e. the time it takes before half of all impressions are created, is about 80 minutes.

Identifying Different Layers of Online Misogyny

Social media has become an everyday means of interaction and information sharing on the Internet. However, posts on social networks are often aggressive and toxic, especially when the topic is controversial or politically charged. Radicalization, extreme speech, and in particular online misogyny against women in the public eye have become alarmingly negative features of online discussions. The present study proposes a methodological approach to contribute to ongoing discussions about the multiple ways in which women, their experiences, and their choices are attacked in polarized social media responses. Based on a review of theories on and detection methods for misogyny, we present a classification scheme that incorporates eleven different explicit as well as implicit layers of online misogyny. We also apply our classes to a case study related to online aggression against Amber Heard in the context of her allegations of domestic violence against Johnny Depp. We finally evaluate the reliability of Google's Perspective API -- a standard for detecting toxic language -- for determining gender discrimination as toxicity. We show that a large part of online misogyny, especially when verbalized without expletive terms but instead more implicitly is not captured automatically.

Glowing Experience or Bad Trip? A Quantitative Analysis of User Reported Drug Experiences on Erowid.org

Erowid.org is a website dedicated to documenting information about psychoactive substances, with over 36,000 user-submitted drug Experience Reports. We study the potential of these reports to provide information about characteristic experiences with drugs. First, we assess different kinds of drug experiences, such as 'addiction' or 'bad trips'. We quantitatively analyze how such experiences are related to substances and user variables. Furthermore, we classify positive and negative experiences as well as reported addiction using information about the consumer, substance, context and location of the drug experience. While variables based only on objective characteristics yield poor predictive performance for subjective experiences, we find subjective user reports can help to identify new patterns and impact factors on drug experiences. In particular, we found a positive association between addiction experiences and dextromethorphan, a substance with largely unknown withdrawal effects. Our research can help to gain a deeper sociological understanding of drug consumption and to identify relationships which may have clinical relevance. Moreover, it can show how non-mainstream social media platforms can be utilized to study characteristics of human behavior and how this can be done in an ethical way in collaboration with the platform providers.

Against the Others! Detecting Moral Outrage inSocial Media Networks

Online firestorms on Twitter are seemingly arbitrarily occurring outrages towards people, companies, media campaigns and politicians. Moral outrages can create an excessive collective aggressiveness against one single argument, one single word, or one action of a person resulting in hateful speech. With a collective "against the others" the negative dynamics often start. Using data from Twitter, we explored the starting points of several firestorm outbreaks. As a social media platform with hundreds of millions of users interacting in real-time on topics and events all over the world, Twitter serves as a social sensor for online discussions and is known for quick and often emotional disputes. The main question we pose in this article, is whether we can detect the outbreak of a firestorm. Given 21 online firestorms on Twitter, the key questions regarding the anomaly detection are: 1) How can we detect the changing point? 2) How can we distinguish the features that cause a moral outrage? In this paper we examine these challenges developing a method to detect the point of change systematically spotting on linguistic cues of tweets. We are able to detect outbreaks of firestorms early and precisely only by applying linguistic cues. The results of our work can help detect negative dynamics and may have the potential for individuals, companies, and governments to mitigate hate in social media networks.
