Incremental Similarity and Turbulence

This paper discusses the mathematical representation of an empirically observed phenomenon, referred to as Incremental Similarity. We discuss this feature from the viewpoint of stochastic processes and present a variety of non-trivial examples, including those that are of relevance for turbulence modelling.

Stochastic energy-cascade model for 1+1 dimensional fully developed turbulence

Geometrical random multiplicative cascade processes are often used to model positive-valued multifractal fields such as the energy dissipation in fully developed turbulence. We propose a dynamical generalization describing the energy dissipation in terms of a continuous and homogeneous stochastic field in one space and one time dimension. In the model, correlations originate in the overlap of the respective spacetime histories of field amplitudes. The theoretical two- and three-point correlation functions are found to be in good agreement with their equal-time counterparts extracted from wind tunnel turbulent shear flow data.

Dynamical random multiplicative cascade model in 1+1 dimensions

Geometrical random multiplicative cascade processes are often used to model positive-valued multifractal fields such as for example the energy dissipation field of fully developed turbulence. A dynamical generalisation of these models is proposed, which describes the continuous and homogeneous stochastic evolution of the field in one space and one time dimension. Two-point correlation functions are calculated.

Indistinguishable multiplier statistics of discrete and continous turbulent cascade models

The multiplier statistics of discrete and continuous nonconservative multiplicative cascade models, employed to describe the energy cascade in fully developed turbulence, is investigated. It is found to be indistinguishable due to small-scale resummation and restoration of spatial homogeneity. Only the subclass of positively skewed weight distributions, associated to the cascade generator, qualifies to describe observed unconditional as well as conditional multiplier distributions qualitatively; popular log-Poisson and log-stable weight distributions do not share this property.

Spatial correlations of singularity strengths in multifractal branching processes

The n-point statistics of singularity strength variables for multiplicative branching processes is calculated from an analytic expression of the corresponding multivariate generating function. The key ingredient is a branching generating function which can be understood as a natural generalisation of the multifractal mass exponents. Various random multiplicative cascade processes pertaining to fully developed turbulence are discussed.
