Scaling Sample-Based Quantum Diagonalization on GPU-Accelerated Systems using OpenMP Offload

Hybrid quantum-HPC algorithms advance research by delegating complex tasks to quantum processors and using HPC systems to orchestrate workflows and complementary computations. Sample-based quantum diagonalization (SQD) is a hybrid quantum-HPC method in which information from a molecular Hamiltonian is encoded into a quantum circuit for evaluation on a quantum computer. A set of measurements on the quantum computer yields electronic configurations that are filtered on the classical computer, which also performs diagonalization on the selected subspace and identifies configurations to be carried over to the next step in an iterative process. Diagonalization is the most demanding task for the classical computer. Previous studies used the Fugaku supercomputer and a highly scalable diagonalization code designed for CPUs. In this work, we describe our efforts to enable efficient scalable and portable diagonalization on heterogeneous systems using GPUs as the main compute engines based on the previous work. GPUs provide massive on-device thread-level parallelism that is well aligned with the algorithms used for diagonalization. We focus on the computation of ground-state energies and wavefunctions using the Davidson algorithm with a selected set of electron configurations. We describe the offload strategy, code transformations, and data-movement, with examples of measurements on the Frontier supercomputer and five other GPU accelerated systems. Our measurements show that GPUs provide an outstanding performance boost of order 100x on a per-node basis. This dramatically expedites the diagonalization step-essential for extracting ground and excited state energies-bringing the classical processing time down from hours to minutes.

GRChombo: An adaptable numerical relativity code for fundamental physics

GRChombo is an open-source code for performing Numerical Relativity time evolutions, built on top of the publicly available Chombo software for the solution of PDEs. Whilst GRChombo uses standard techniques in NR, it focusses on applications in theoretical physics where adaptability, both in terms of grid structure, and in terms of code modification, are key drivers.

Skyrmions induced by dissipationless drag in U(1)xU(1) superconductors

Rather generically, multicomponent superconductors and superfluids have intercomponent current-current interaction. We show that in superconductors with substantially strong intercomponent drag interaction, the topological defects which form in external field are characterized by a skyrmionic topological charge. We then demonstrate that they can be distinguished from ordinary vortex matter by a very characteristic magnetization process due to the dipolar nature of inter-skyrmion forces. The results provide an experimental signature to confirm or rule out the formation $p$-wave state with reduced spin stiffness in $p$-wave superconductors.

Vortex states in mesoscopic three-band superconductors

Using multi-component Ginzburg-Landau simulations, we show a plethora of vortex states possible in mesoscopic three-band superconductors. We find that mesoscopic confinement stabilizes chiral states, with non-trivial phase differences between the band-condensates, as the ground state of the system. As a consequence, we report the broken-symmetry vortex states, the chiral states where vortex cores in different band condensates do not coincide (split-core vortices), as well as fractional vortex states with broken time-reversal symmetry.

Giant vortex states in type I superconductors simulated by Ginzburg-Landau equations

The quantization of magnetic flux in superconductors is usually seen as vortices penetrating the sample. While vortices are unstable in bulk type I superconductors, restricting the superconductor causes a variety of vortex structures to appear. We present a systematic study of giant vortex states in type I superconductors obtained by numerically solving the Ginzburg-Landau equations. The size of the vortices is seen to increase with decreasing film thickness. In type I superconductors, giant vortices appear at intermediate thicknesses but they do not form a well-defined vortex lattice. In the thinnest type I films, singly quantized vortices seem to be stabilized by the geometry of the sample instead of an increase in the effective Ginzburg-Landau parameter.

Isospinning hopfions

The problem of constructing internally rotating solitons of fixed angular frequency $ω$ in the Faddeev-Skyrme model is reformulated as a variational problem for an energy-like functional, called pseudoenergy, which depends parametrically on $ω$. This problem is solved numerically using a gradient descent method, without imposing any spatial symmetries on the solitons, and the dependence of the solitons' energy on $ω$, and on their conserved total isospin $J$, studied. It is found that, generically, the shape of a soliton is independent of $ω$, and that its size grows monotonically with $ω$. A simple elastic rod model of time-dependent hopfions is developed which, despite having only one free parameter, accounts well for most of the numerical results.

Modelling reduced field dependence of $j_c$ in YBCO films with nanorods

Flux pinning is still the main limiting factor for the critical current of the high-temperature superconductors in high fields. In this paper we model the field dependence of the critical current in thin films with columnar defects aligned with the field. The characteristic shape of the critical current of the BaZrO$_3$ doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ thin films is reproduced and explained. The model is based on solving the Ginzburg-Landau equations with columnar defects present in the lattice. The size of the columnar defect is found to be of key importance in explaining the rounded shape of the critical current of the BaZrO$_3$ doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ thin films. It is also found that the size of the rod changes the long range order of the vortex lattice.

Broken Baby Skyrmions

The baby Skyrme model is a (2+1)-dimensional analogue of the Skyrme model, in which baryons are described by topological solitons. In this paper we introduce a version of the baby Skyrme model in which the global O(3) symmetry is broken to the dihedral group D_N. It is found that the single soliton in this theory is composed of N partons, that are topologically confined. The case N=3 is studied in some detail and multi-soliton solutions are computed. These soliton solutions are related to polyiamonds, which are plane figures composed of equilateral triangles joined by common edges. It is shown that the solitons may be viewed as pieces of a doubly periodic soliton lattice. An alternative model with D_3 symmetry is also introduced, which has an exact explicit soliton lattice solution. Soliton solutions are computed and compared in the two D_3 theories. Some comments are made regarding the extension of these ideas to the Skyrme model.

Knot solitons in modified Ginzburg-Landau model

We study a modified version of the Ginzburg-Landau model suggested by Ward and show that Hopfions exist in it as stable static solutions, for values of the Hopf invariant up to at least 7. We also find that their properties closely follow those of their counterparts in the Faddeev-Skyrme model. Finally, we lend support to Babaev's conjecture that longer core lengths yield more stable solitons and propose a possible mechanism for constructing Hopfions in pure Ginzburg-Landau model.

Easy plane baby skyrmions

The baby Skyrme model is studied with a novel choice of potential, $V=1/2 ϕ_3^2$. This "easy plane" potential vanishes at the equator of the target two-sphere. Hence, in contrast to previously studied cases, the boundary value of the field breaks the residual SO(2) internal symmetry of the model. Consequently, even the unit charge skyrmion has only discrete symmetry and consists of a bound state of two half lumps. A model of long-range inter-skyrmion forces is developed wherein a unit skyrmion is pictured as a single scalar dipole inducing a massless scalar field tangential to the vacuum manifold. This model has the interesting feature that the two-skyrmion interaction energy depends only on the average orientation of the dipoles relative to the line joining them. Its qualitative predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations. Global energy minimizers of charges B=1,...,14,18,32 are found numerically. Up to charge B=6, the minimizers have 2B half lumps positioned at the vertices of a regular 2B-gon. For charges B >= 7, rectangular or distorted rectangular arrays of 2B half lumps are preferred, as close to square as possible.

Magnetic field delocalization and flux inversion in fractional vortices in two-component superconductors

We demonstrate that, in contrast to the single-component Abrikosov vortex, in two-component superconductors vortex solutions with exponentially screened magnetic field exist only in exceptional cases: in the case of vortices carrying an integer number of flux quanta, and in a special parameter limit for half-quantum vortices. For all other parameters the vortex solutions have delocalized magnetic field with a slowly decaying tail. Furthermore, we demonstrate a new effect which is generic in two-component systems but has no counterpart in single-component systems: on exactly half of the parameter space of the $U(1)\times U(1)$ Ginzburg-Landau model, the magnetic field of a generic fractional vortex inverts its direction at a certain distance from the vortex core.

Unwinding in Hopfion vortex bunches

We investigate the behaviour of parallel Faddeev-Hopf vortices under energy minimization in a system with physically relevant, but unusual boundary conditions. The homotopy classification is no longer provided by the Hopf invariant, but rather by the set of integer homotopy invariants proposed by Pontrjagin. The nature of these invariants depends on the boundary conditions. A set of tightly wound parallel vortices of the usual Hopfion structure is observed to form a bunch of intertwined vortices or unwind completely, depending on the boundary conditions.

Stability of topological solitons in modified two-component Ginzburg-Landau model

We study the stability of Hopfions embedded in a certain modification Ginzburg-Landau model of two equally charged condensates. It has been shown by Ward [Phys. Rev. D66, 041701(R) (2002)] that certain modification of the ordinary model results in system which supports stable topological solitons (Hopfions) for some values of the parameters of the model. We expand the search for stability into previously uninvestigated region of the parameter space, charting an approximate shape for the stable/unstable boundary and find that, within the accuracy of the numerical methods used, the energy of the stable knot at the boundary is independent of the parameters.

Investigation of the stability of Hopfions in the two-component Ginzburg-Landau model

We study the stability of Hopfions embedded in the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model of two oppositely charged components. It has been shown by Babaev et al. [Phys. Rev. B 65, 100512 (2002)] that this model contains the Faddeev-Skyrme (FS) model, which is known to have topologically stable configurations with a given Hopf charge, the so-called Hopfions. Hopfions are typically formed from a unit-vector field that points to a fixed direction at spatial infinity and locally forms a knot with a soft core. The GL model, however, contains extra fields beyond the unit-vector field of the FS model and this can in principle change the fate of topologically non-trivial configurations. We investigate the stability of Hopfions in the two-component GL model both analytically (scaling) and numerically (first order dissipative dynamics). A number of initial states with different Hopf charges are studied; we also consider various different scalar potentials, including a singular one. In all the cases studied, we find that the Hopfions tend to shrink into a thin loop that is too close to a singular configuration for our numerical methods to investigate.

Relaxation of twisted vortices in the Faddeev-Skyrme model

We study vortex knotting in the Faddeev-Skyrme model. Starting with a straight vortex line twisted around its axis we follow its evolution under dissipative energy minimization dynamics. With low twist per unit length the vortex forms a helical coil, but with higher twist numbers the vortex becomes knotted or a ring is formed around the vortex.
