Driving superfluidity with photoassociation

We theoretically examine photoassociation of a two-component Fermi degenerate gas. Our focus is on adjusting the atom-atom interaction, and thereby increasing the critical temperature of the BCS transition to the superfluid state. In order to avoid spontaneous decay of the molecules, the photoassociating light must be far-off resonance. Very high light intensities are therefore required for effective control of the BCS transition.

Measurement theory for spinor condensates

We study the experimental signatures of several states of a Bose-Einstein condensate of spin-1 atoms by quantum trajectory simulations of Stern-Gerlach experiments. The measurement process itself creates an apparent random alignment for the spins, so that it is difficult to distinguish between a condensate that initially has an alignment in an unknown direction and one with no alignment at all. Nonetheless, in repeated experiments with identically prepared condensates, it is possible to discriminate between certain ground states of the condensate proposed in the literature.

Role of Bose enhancement in photoassociation

We discuss the role of Bose enhancement of the dipole matrix element in photoassociation, using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage as an example. In a nondegenerate gas the time scale for coherent optical transients tends to infinity in the thermodynamic limit, whereas Bose enhancement keeps this time scale finite in a condensate. Coherent transients are therefore absent in photoassociation of a thermal nondegenerate gas, but are feasible if the gas is a condensate.

Theory of coherent photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study coherent photoassociation, phenomena analogous to coherent optical transients in few-level systems, which may take place in photoassociation of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate but not in a nondegenerate gas. We develop a second-quantized Hamiltonian to describe photoassociation, and apply the Hamiltonian both in the momentum representation and in the position representation (field theory). Solution of the two-mode problem including only one mode each for the atomic and molecular condensates displays analogs of Rabi oscillations and rapid adiabatic passage. A classical version of the field theory for atoms and molecules is used to demonstrate that, in the presence of photoassociating light, a joint-atom molecule is unstable against growth of density fluctuations. Experimental complications, including spontaneous emission and unwanted "rogue" photodissociation from a photoassociated molecule are analyzed. A two-color Raman scheme is studied as a method to set up an effective two-mode scheme with reduced spontaneous emission losses. We discuss photoassociation rates and photoassociation Rabi frequencies for high-lying vibrational states in alkalis both on the basis of molecular-structure calculations, and by comparing with an experiment [Wynar et al., Science 287, 1016 (2000)].

Bose-Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage in Photoassociation

We analyze coherent two-color photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate, focusing on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in free-bound-bound transitions from atoms to molecules. This problem is of particular interest since STIRAP is predicted to be necessarily absent in the nondegenerate case [Javanainen and Mackie, Phys. Rev. A 58, R789 (1998)]. However, Bose-stimulation enhances the free-bound dipole matrix element for an atomic condensate, and photoassociative STIRAP turns out to be a viable mechanism for converting an atomic condensate to a molecular condensate with near-unit efficiency.

Lorentz-Lorenz shift in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the quantum field theory of light-matter interactions for quantum degenerate atomic gases at low light intensity. We argue that the contact interactions between atoms emerging in the dipole gauge may be ignored. Specifically, they are canceled by concurrent infinite level shifts of the atoms. Our development yields the classic Lorentz-Lorenz local-field shift of the atomic resonance.

Quantum field theory of cooperative atom response: Low light intensity

We study the interactions of a possibly dense and/or quantum degenerate gas with driving light. Both the atoms and the electromagnetic fields are represented by quantum fields throughout the analysis. We introduce a field theory version of Markov and Born approximations for the interactions of light with matter, and devise a procedure whereby certain types of products of atom and light fields may be put to a desired, essentially normal, order. In the limit of low light intensity we find a hierarchy of equations of motion for correlation functions that contain one excited-atom field and one, two, three, etc., ground state atom fields. It is conjectured that the entire linear hierarchy may be solved by solving numerically the classical equations for the coupled system of electromagnetic fields and charged harmonic oscillators. We discuss the emergence of resonant dipole-dipole interactions and collective linewidths, and delineate the limits of validity of the column density approach in terms of non-cooperative atoms by presenting a mathematical example in which this approach is exact.
