On the regularity theory for mixed local and nonlocal quasilinear parabolic equations

We consider mixed local and nonlocal quasilinear parabolic equations of $p$-Laplace type and discuss several regularity properties of weak solutions for such equations. More precisely, we establish local boundeness of weak subsolutions, lower semicontinuity of weak supersolutions as well as upper semicontinuity of weak subsolutions. We also discuss the pointwise behavior of the semicontinuous representatives. Our main results are valid for sign changing solutions. Our approach is purely analytic and is based on energy estimates and the De Giorgi theory.

Weak Harnack inequality for a mixed local and nonlocal parabolic equation

This article proves a weak Harnack inequality with a tail term for sign changing supersolutions of a mixed local and nonlocal parabolic equation. Our argument is purely analytic. It is based on energy estimates and the Moser iteration technique. Instead of the parabolic John-Nirenberg lemma, we adopt a lemma of Bombieri to the mixed local and nonlocal parabolic case. To this end, we prove an appropriate reverse Hölder inequality and a logarithmic estimate for weak supersolutions.

Supercaloric functions for the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation in the fast diffusion case

We study a generalized class of supersolutions, so-called $p$-supercaloric functions, to the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation. This class of functions is defined as lower semicontinuous functions that are finite in a dense set and satisfy the parabolic comparison principle. Their properties are relatively well understood for $p\geq 2$, but little is known in the fast diffusion case $1<p<2$. Every bounded $p$-supercaloric function belongs to the natural Sobolev space and is a weak supersolution to the parabolic $p$-Laplace equation for the entire range $1<p<\infty$. Our main result shows that unbounded $p$-supercaloric functions are divided into two mutually exclusive classes with sharp local integrability estimates for the function and its weak gradient in the supercritical case $\frac{2n}{n+1}<p<2$. The Barenblatt solution and the infinite point source solution show that both alternatives occur. Barenblatt solutions do not exist in the subcritical case $1<p\leq \frac{2n}{n+1}$ and the theory is not yet well understood.

Lower semicontinuity and pointwise behavior of supersolutions for some doubly nonlinear nonlocal parabolic $p$-Laplace equations

We discuss pointwise behavior of weak supersolutions for a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equations which includes the fractional parabolic $p$-Laplace equation and the fractional porous medium equation. More precisely, we show that weak supersolutions have lower semicontinuous representative. We also prove that the semicontinuous representative at an instant of time is determined by the values at previous times. This gives a pointwise interpretation for a weak supersolution at every point. The corresponding results hold true also for weak subsolutions. Our results extend some recent results in the local parabolic case and in the nonlocal elliptic case to the nonlocal parabolic case. We prove the required energy estimates and measure theoretic De Giorgi type lemmas in the fractional setting.

Some local properties of subsolutons and supersolutions for a doubly nonlinear nonlocal parabolic $p$-Laplace equation

We establish a local boundedness estimate for weak subsolutions to a doubly nonlinear parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equation. Our argument relies on energy estimates and a parabolic nonlocal version of De Giorgi's method. Furthermore, by means of a new algebraic inequality, we show that positive weak supersolutions satisfy a reverse Hölder inequality. Finally, we also prove a logarithmic decay estimate for positive supersolutions.

Higher integrability for doubly nonlinear parabolic systems

This paper proves a local higher integrability result for the spatial gradient of weak solutions to doubly nonlinear parabolic systems. The new feature of the argument is that the intrinsic geometry involves the solution as well as its spatial gradient. The main result holds true for a range of parameters suggested by other nonlinear parabolic systems.

A median approach to differentiation bases

We study a version of the Lebesgue differentiation theorem in which the integral averages are replaced with medians over Busemann--Feller differentiation bases. Our main result gives several characterizations for the differentiation property in terms of the corresponding median maximal function. As an application, we study pointwise behaviour in Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces, where functions are not necessarily locally integrable. Most of our results apply also for functions defined on metric measure spaces.

A maximal function approach to two-measure Poincaré inequalities

This paper extends the self-improvement result of Keith and Zhong in [16] to the two-measure case. Our main result shows that a two-measure $(p,p)$-Poincaré inequality for $1 0$ under a balance condition on the measures. The corresponding result for a maximal Poincaré inequality is also considered. In this case the left-hand side in the Poincaré inequality is replaced with an integral of a sharp maximal function and the results hold without a balance condition. Moreover, validity of maximal Poincaré inequalities is used to characterize the self-improvement of two-measure Poincaré inequalities. Examples are constructed to illustrate the role of the assumptions. Harmonic analysis and PDE techniques are used extensively in the arguments.

Supercaloric functions for the porous medium equation

In the slow diffusion case unbounded supersolutions of the porous medium equation are of two totally different types, depending on whether the pressure is locally integrable or not. This criterion and its consequences are discussed.

Maximal function estimates and self-improvement results for Poincaré inequalities

Our main result is an estimate for a sharp maximal function, which implies a Keith-Zhong type self-improvement property of Poincaré inequalities related to differentiable structures on metric measure spaces. As an application, we give structure independent representation for Sobolev norms and universality results for Sobolev spaces.

Parabolic weighted norm inequalities and partial differential equations

We investigate parabolic Muckenhoupt weights and functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) related to nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations. The main result gives a full characterization of weak and strong type weighted norm inequalities for parabolic forward in time maximal operators. In addition, we give a Jones type factorization result for the parabolic Muckenhoupt weights and a Coifman-Rochberg type characterization of the parabolic BMO from Moser's seminal paper through parabolic Muckenhoupt weights and maximal functions.

Oscillation estimates, self-improving results and good-$λ$ inequalities

Our main result is an abstract good-$λ$ inequality that allows us to consider three self-improving properties related to oscillation estimates in a very general context. The novelty of our approach is that there is one principle behind these self-improving phenomena. First, we obtain higher integrability properties for functions belonging to the so-called John-Nirenberg spaces. Second, and as a consequence of the previous fact, we present very easy proofs of some of the self-improving properties of the generalized Poincaré inequalities studied by B. Franchi, C. Pérez and R. Wheeden, and by P. MacManus and C. Pérez . Finally, we show that a weak Gurov-Reshetnyak condition implies higher integrability with asymptotically sharp estimates. We discuss these questions both in Euclidean spaces with dyadic cubes and in spaces of homogeneous type with metric balls. We develop new techniques that apply to more general oscillations than the standard mean oscillation and to overlapping balls instead of dyadic cubes.

A characterization of BMO self-maps of a metric measure space

This paper studies functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) on metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure. The main result gives characterizations for mappings that preserve BMO. This extends the corresponding Euclidean results by Gotoh to metric measure spaces. The argument is based on a generalizations Uchiyama's construction of certain extremal BMO-functions and John-Nirenberg's lemma.

Perron's method for the porous medium equation

This work extends Perron's method for the porous medium equation in the slow diffusion case. The main result shows that nonnegative continuous boundary functions are resolutive in a general cylindrical domain.

Relaxation and integral representation for functionals of linear growth on metric measure spaces

This article studies an integral representation of functionals of linear growth on metric measure spaces with a doubling measure and a Poincaré inequality. Such a functional is defined through relaxation, and it defines a Radon measure on the space. For the singular part of the functional, we get the expected integral representation with respect to the variation measure. A new feature is that in the representation for the absolutely continuous part, a constant appears already in the weighted Euclidean case. As an application we show that in a variational minimization problem related to the functional, boundary values can be presented as a penalty term.

Regularity of the local fractional maximal function

This paper studies smoothing properties of the local fractional maximal operator, which is defined in a proper subdomain of the Euclidean space. We prove new pointwise estimates for the weak gradient of the maximal function, which imply norm estimates in Sobolev spaces. An unexpected feature is that these estimates contain extra terms involving spherical and fractional maximal functions. Moreover, we construct several explicit examples which show that our results are essentially optimal. Extensions to metric measure spaces are also discussed.
