Decay of correlations and normal approximation for nonstationary heterochaos baker maps

We study statistical properties of nonstationary compositions of a sequence of heterochaos baker maps. For maps whose central direction is mostly expanding, we establish three main results: exponential rate of memory loss for a broad class of measures (Theorem 1.1), a functional correlation bound with stretched exponential decay (Theorem 1.2), and an error bound for the multivariate central limit theorem (CLT) in the Wasserstein-1 distance (Theorem 1.3). The proofs are based on the construction of suitable Gibbs--Markov induced maps for the nonstationary compositions. In a certain special case we obtain a concrete estimate on the rate of convergence in the multivariate CLT (Theorem 1.4).

Functional correlation bound for random Lasota--Yorke maps with holes and its applications to conditional normal approximations

This paper investigates the statistical properties of random open dynamical systems generated by families of Lasota--Yorke maps. Open systems, in which trajectories may escape through `holes', model transient phenomena and present additional difficulties for statistical analysis because the underlying ensemble loses mass over time. We show that the framework of functional correlation bounds (FCB), originally developed for closed systems, can also be adapted to this random open setting. The extension requires new ingredients based on Lasota--Yorke type inequalities in order to control the effect of escaping trajectories. We establish an FCB with exponential decay and combine it with the abstract normal-approximation results of \cite{LNN25,LS20} to obtain a conditional CLT with rates in Wasserstein distance and a conditional functional CLT with a rate in an integral distance over Barbour's class of smooth test functions. Additionally, we adapt Tikhomirov's method to obtain a bound in Kolmogorov distance for the conditional CLT.

A multivariate Berry--Esseen theorem for time-dependent expanding dynamical systems

We adapt Stein's method to obtain Berry--Esseen type error bounds in the multivariate central limit theorem for non-stationary processes generated by time-dependent compositions of uniformly expanding dynamical systems. In a particular case of random dynamical systems with a strongly mixing base transformation, we derive an error estimate of order $O(N^{-1/2})$ in the quenched multivariate CLT, provided that the covariance matrix "grows linearly" with the number of summands $N$. The error in the normal approximation is estimated for the class of all convex sets.

Regularity of the variance in quenched CLT for random intermittent dynamical systems

We study random dynamical systems composed of LSV maps with varying parameters, without any mixing assumptions on the base space of random dynamics. We establish a quenched central limit theorem and identify conditions under which the associated limit variance varies continuously and differentiably with respect to perturbations of the random dynamics. Our arguments rely on recent results on statistical stability and linear response for random intermittent maps established in Dragicevic et al. (J. Lond. Math. Soc. 111 (2025), e70150).

A local limit theorem for a random walk in an intermittent dynamical environment

We study an extended dynamical system on the non-negative real line with piecewise linear non-uniformly expanding local dynamics. With a uniformly distributed initial state, the distribution of successive states coincides with that of a random walk in an inhomogeneous environment. Under suitable conditions on the environment, we establish a central limit theorem and a (non-Gaussian) local limit theorem for the walk. Our approach builds on the work of Leskelä and Stenlund (Stochastic Process. Appl. 121(12), 2011), who analyzed a corresponding model with uniformly expanding local dynamics.

Error bounds in a smooth metric for Brownian approximation of dynamical systems via Stein's method

We adapt Stein's method of diffusion approximations, developed by Barbour, to the study of chaotic dynamical systems. We establish an error bound in the functional central limit theorem with respect to an integral probability metric of smooth test functions under a functional correlation decay bound. For systems with a sufficiently fast polynomial rate of correlation decay, the error bound is of order $O(N^{-1/2})$, under an additional condition on the linear growth of variance. Applications include a family of interval maps with neutral fixed points and unbounded derivatives, and two-dimensional dispersing Sinai billiards.

Linear response for intermittent maps with critical point

We consider a two-parameter family of maps $T_{α, β}: [0,1] \to [0,1]$ with a neutral fixed point and a non-flat critical point. Building on a cone technique due to Baladi and Todd, we show that for a class of $L^q$ observables $ϕ: [0,1] \to \mathbb{R}$ the bivariate map $(α, β) \mapsto \int_0^1 ϕ\, dμ_{α,β}$, where $μ_{α, β}$ denotes the invariant SRB measure, is differentiable in a certain parameter region, and establish a formula for its directional derivative.

Loss of memory and moment bounds for nonstationary intermittent dynamical systems

We study nonstationary intermittent dynamical systems, such as compositions of a (deterministic) sequence of Pomeau-Manneville maps. We prove two main results: sharp bounds on memory loss, including the "unexpected" faster rate for a large class of measures, and sharp moment bounds for Birkhoff sums and, more generally, "separately Hölder" observables.

Sunklodas' approach to normal approximation for time-dependent dynamical systems

We consider time-dependent dynamical systems arising as sequential compositions of self-maps of a probability space. We establish conditions under which the Birkhoff sums for multivariate observations, given a centering and a general normalizing sequence $b(N)$ of invertible square matrices, are approximated by a normal distribution with respect to a metric of regular test functions. Depending on the metric and the normalizing sequence $b(N)$, the conditions imply that the error in the approximation decays either at the rate $O(N^{-1/2})$ or the rate $O(N^{-1/2} \log N)$, under the additional assumption that $\Vert b(N)^{-1} \Vert \lesssim N^{-1/2}$. The error comes with a multiplicative constant whose exact value can be computed directly from the conditions. The proof is based on an observation due to Sunklodas regarding Stein's method of normal approximation. We give applications to one-dimensional random piecewise expanding maps and to sequential, random, and quasistatic intermittent systems.

Central limit theorems with a rate of convergence for time-dependent intermittent maps

We study dynamical systems arising as time-dependent compositions of Pomeau-Manneville-type intermittent maps. We establish central limit theorems for appropriately scaled and centered Birkhoff-like partial sums, with estimates on the rate of convergence. For maps chosen from a certain parameter range, but without additional assumptions on how the maps vary with time, we obtain a self-normalized CLT provided that the variances of the partial sums grow sufficiently fast. When the maps are chosen randomly according to a shift-invariant probability measure, we identify conditions under which the quenched CLT holds, assuming fiberwise centering. Finally, we show a multivariate CLT for intermittent quasistatic systems. Our approach is based on Stein's method of normal approximation.

Intermittent quasistatic dynamical systems: weak convergence of fluctuations

This paper is about statistical properties of quasistatic dynamical systems. These are a class of non-stationary systems that model situations where the dynamics change very slowly over time due to external influence. We focus on the case where the time-evolution is described by intermittent interval maps (Pomeau-Manneville maps) with time-dependent parameters. In a suitable range of parameters, we obtain a description of the statistical properties as a stochastic diffusion, by solving a well-posed martingale problem. The results extend those of a related recent study due to Dobbs and Stenlund, which concerned the case of quasistatic (uniformly) expanding systems.

Functional correlation decay and multivariate normal approximation for non-uniformly expanding maps

In the setting of intermittent Pomeau-Manneville maps with time dependent parameters, we show a functional correlation bound widely useful for the analysis of the statistical properties of the model. We give two applications of this result, by showing that in a suitable range of parameters the bound implies the conditions of the normal approximation methods of Stein and Rio. For a single Pomeau-Manneville map belonging to this parameter range, both methods then yield a multivariate central limit theorem with a rate of convergence.

A note on the finite-dimensional distributions of dispersing billiard processes

In this short note we consider the finite-dimensional distributions of sets of states generated by dispersing billiards with a random initial condition. We establish a functional correlation bound on the distance between the finite-dimensional distributions and corresponding product distributions. We demonstrate the usefulness of the bound by showing that it implies several limit theorems. The purpose of this note is to provide a tool facilitating the study of more general functionals of the billiard process.

Stein's method for dynamical systems

We present an adaptation of Stein's method of normal approximation to the study of both discrete- and continuous-time dynamical systems. We obtain new correlation-decay conditions on dynamical systems for a multivariate central limit theorem augmented by a rate of convergence. We then present a scheme for checking these conditions in actual examples. The principal contribution of our paper is the method, which yields a convergence rate essentially with the same amount of work as the central limit theorem, together with a multiplicative constant that can be computed directly from the assumptions.

Quasistatic dynamics with intermittency

We study an intermittent quasistatic dynamical system composed of nonuniformly hyperbolic Pomeau--Manneville maps with time-dependent parameters. We prove an ergodic theorem which shows almost sure convergence of time averages in a certain parameter range, and identify the unique physical family of measures. The theorem also shows convergence in probability in a larger parameter range. In the process, we establish other results that will be useful for further analysis of the statistical properties of the model.
