Topological normal generation of big mapping class groups

A topological group $G$ is topologically normally generated if there exists $g \in G$ such that the normal closure of $g$ is dense in $G$. Let $S$ be a tame, infinite type surface whose mapping class group $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is generated by a coarsely bounded set (CB generated). We prove that if the end space of $S$ is countable, then $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is topologically normally generated if and only if $S$ is uniquely self-similar. Moreover, when the end space of $S$ is uncountable, we provide a sufficient condition under which $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is topologically normally generated. As a consequence, we construct uncountably many examples of surfaces that are not telescoping yet have topologically normally generated mapping class groups. Additionally, we establish the semidirect product structure of $\mathrm{FMap}(S)$, the subgroup of $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ that pointwisely fixes all maximal ends that each is isolated in the set of maximal ends of $S$. This result leads to a proof that the minimum number of topological normal generators of $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is bounded both above and below by constants that depend only on the topology of $S$. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the upper bound grows quadratically with respect to this constant.

Monodromy through bifurcation locus of the Mandelbrot set

We investigate the behavior of itinerary sequence of each point of the Julia set of $z\mapsto z^2 + c$ when the parameter $c$ in the shift locus is allowed to pass through points in the bifurcation locus $\mathcal{P}_2$, which we call ``narrow", first proposed by Dierk Schleicher in \cite{schleicher2017internal}. We first show the combinatoric and geometric properties of narrow characteristic arcs. Also, we show how the itinerary sequence changes in an algorithmic way by using lamination models proposed by Keller in \cite{keller2007invariant}. Finally, we found an equivalence relation on the set of $0$-$1$ sequences so that the changing rule is a shift invariant up to the equivalence relation. This generalizes Atela's works in \cite{atela1992bifurcations}, \cite{atela1993mandelbrot}, which dealt with the special case of the generalized rabbit polynomials.

Thurston unit ball of a family of $n$-chained links and their fibered face

We determine the Thurston unit ball of a family of $n$-chained link, denoted by $C(n,p)$, where $n$ is the number of link components and $p$ is the number of twists. When $p$ is strictly positive, we prove that the Thurston unit ball for $C(n,p)$ is an $n$-dimensional cocube, for arbitrary $n$. Moreover, we clarify the condition for which $C(n,p)$ is fibered and find at least one fibered face for any $p$. Finally we provide the Teichmüller polynomial for the face of Thurston unit ball of $C(n, -2)$ with $n\geq 3$.

Topological entropy of pseudo-Anosov maps on punctured surfaces vs. homology of mapping tori

We investigate the relation between the topological entropy of pseudo-Anosov maps on surfaces with punctures and the rank of the first homology of their mapping tori. On the surface $S$ of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures, we show that the entropy of a pseudo-Anosov map is bounded from above by $\dfrac{(k+1)\log(k+3)}{|χ(S)|}$ up to a constant multiple when the rank of the first homology of the mapping torus is $k+1$ and $k, g, n$ satisfy a certain assumption. This is a partial generalization of precedent works of Tsai and Agol-Leininger-Margalit.
