Optical and Ultraviolet Monitoring of the Black Hole X-ray Binary MAXI J1820+070/ASASSN-18ey for 18 Months

MAXI J1820+070 is a low-mass black hole X-ray binary system with high luminosity in both optical and X-ray bands during the outburst periods. We present extensive photometry in X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical bands, as well as densely-cadenced optical spectra, covering the phase from the beginning of optical outburst to $\sim$550 days. During the rebrightening process, the optical emission preceded the X-ray by 20.80 $\pm$ 2.85 days. The spectra are characterized by blue continua and emission features of Balmer series, He I, He II lines and broad Bowen blend. The pseudo equivalent width (pEW) of emission lines are found to show anticorrelations with the X-ray flux measured at comparable phases, which is due to the increased suppression by the optical continuum. At around the X-ray peak, the full width at half maximums (FWHMs) of H$_β$ and He II $λ$4686 tend to stabilize at 19.4 Angstrom and 21.8 Angstrom, which corresponds to the line forming region at a radius of 1.7 and 1.3 R_sun within the disk. We further analyzed the absolute fluxes of the lines and found that the fluxes of H$_β$ and He II $λ$4686 show positive correlations with the X-ray flux, favoring that the irradiation model is responsible for the optical emission. However, the fact that X-ray emission experiences a dramatic flux drop at t$\sim$200 days after the outburst, while the optical flux only shows little variations suggests that additional energy such as viscous energy may contribute to the optical radiation in addition to the X-ray irradiation.

SN 2017hpa: A Nearby Carbon-Rich Type Ia Supernova with a Large Velocity Gradient

We present extensive, well-sampled optical and ultraviolet photometry and optical spectra of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2017hpa. The light curves indicate that SN 2017hpa is a normal SN Ia with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{\rm max}^{B} \approx$ -19.12$\pm$0.11 mag and a post-peak decline rate \mb\ = 1.02$\pm$0.07 mag. According to the quasibolometric light curve, we derive a peak luminosity of 1.25$\times$10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and a $^{56}$Ni mass of 0.63$\pm$0.02 $M_{\odot}$. The spectral evolution of SN 2017hpa is similar to that of normal SNe Ia, while it exhibits unusually rapid velocity evolution resembling that of SN 1991bg-like SNe Ia or the high-velocity subclass of SNe Ia, with a post-peak velocity gradient of $\sim$ 130$\pm$7 km s$^{-1}$ d$^{-1}$. Moreover, its early spectra ($t < -7.9$ d) show prominent \CII~$λ$6580 absorption feature, which disappeared in near-maximum-light spectra but reemerged at phases from $t \sim +8.7$ d to $t \sim +11.7$ d after maximum light. This implies that some unburned carbon may mix deep into the inner layer, and is supported by the low \CII~$λ$6580 to \SiII~$λ$6355 velocity ratio ($\sim 0.81$) observed in SN 2017hpa. The \OI~$λ$7774 line shows a velocity distribution like that of carbon. The prominent carbon feature, low velocity seen in carbon and oxygen, and large velocity gradient make SN 2017hpa stand out from other normal SNe Ia, and are more consistent with predictions from a violent merger of two white dwarfs. Detailed modelling is still needed to reveal the nature of SN 2017hpa.

The Peculiar Transient AT2018cow: A Possible Origin of A Type Ibn/IIn Supernova

We present our photometric and spectroscopic observations on the peculiar transient AT2018cow. The multi-band photometry covers from peak to $\sim$70 days and the spectroscopy ranges from 5 to $\sim$50 days. The rapid rise ($t_{\mathrm{r}}$$\lesssim$2.9 days), high luminosity ($M_{V,\mathrm{peak}}\sim-$20.8 mag) and fast decline after peak make AT2018cow stand out of any other optical transients. While we find that its light curves show high resemblance to those of type Ibn supernovae. Moreover, the spectral energy distribution remains high temperature of $\sim$14,000 K after $\sim$15 days since discovery. The spectra are featureless in the first 10 days, while some broad emission lines due to H, He, C and O emerge later, with velocity declining from $\sim$14,000 km s$^{-1}$ to $\sim$3000 km s$^{-1}$ at the end of our observations. Narrow and weak He I emission lines emerge in the spectra at $t>$20 days since discovery. These emission lines are reminiscent of the features seen in interacting supernovae like type Ibn and IIn subclasses. We fit the bolometric light curves with a model of circumstellar interaction (CSI) and radioactive decay (RD) of \Ni and find a good fit with ejecta mass $M_{\mathrm{ej}}\sim$3.16 M$_{\odot}$, circumstellar material mass $M_{\mathrm{CSM}}\sim$0.04 M$_{\odot}$, and ejected \Ni mass $M_{^{56}\mathrm{Ni}}\sim$0.23 M$_{\odot}$. The CSM shell might be formed in an eruptive mass ejection of the progenitor star. Furthermore, host environment of AT2018cow implies connection of AT2018cow with massive stars. Combining observational properties and the light curve fitting results, we conclude that AT2018cow might be a peculiar interacting supernova originated from a massive star.

Can Helium-detonation Model Explain the Observed Diversity of Type Ia Supernovae?

We study a sample of 16 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) having both spectroscopic and photometric observations within 2 $-$ 3 days after the first light. The early $B-V$ colors of such a sample tends to show a continuous distribution. For objects with normal ejecta velocity (NV), the C~II $λ$6580 feature is always visible in the early spectra while it is absent or very weak in the high-velocity (HV) counterpart. Moreover, the velocities of the detached high-velocity features (HVFs) of Ca~II NIR triplet (CaIR3) above the photosphere are found to be much higher in HV objects than in NV objects, with typical values exceeding 30,000 km~s$^{-1}$ at 2 $-$ 3 days. We further analyze the relation between %velocities of Si~II~$λ$6355 at maximum, $v_{\rm Si,max}$, the velocity shift of late-time [Fe~II] lines ($v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$) and host galaxy mass. We find that all HV objects have redshifted $v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$ while NV objects have both blue- and redshifted $v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$. It is interesting to point out that the objects with redshifted $v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$ are all located in massive galaxies, implying that HV and a portion of NV objects may have similar progenitor metallicities and explosion mechanisms. We propose that, with a geometric/projected effect, the He-detonation model may account for the similarity in birthplace environment and the differences seen in some SNe Ia, including $B-V$ colors, C~II feature, CaIR3 HVFs at early time and $v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$ in the nebular phase. Nevertheless, some features predicted by He-detonation simulation, such as the rapidly decreasing light curve, deviate from the observations, and some NV objects with blueshifted nebular $v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$ may involve other explosion mechanisms.

Optical and Near-Infrared Observations of the Nearby Type Ia Supernova 2017cbv

Supernova (SN) 2017cbv in NGC 5643 is one of a handful of type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) reported to have excess blue emission at early times. This paper presents extensive $BVRIYJHK_s$-band light curves of SN 2017cbv, covering the phase from $-16$ to $+125$ days relative to $B$-band maximum light. SN 2017cbv reached a $B$-band maximum of 11.710$\pm$0.006~mag, with a post-maximum magnitude decline $Δm_{15}(B)$=0.990$\pm$0.013 mag. The supernova suffered no host reddening based on Phillips intrinsic color, Lira-Phillips relation, and the CMAGIC diagram. By employing the CMAGIC distance modulus $μ=30.58\pm0.05$~mag and assuming $H_0$=72~$\rm km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}$, we found that 0.73~\msun $^{56}$Ni was synthesized during the explosion of SN 2017cbv, which is consistent with estimates using reddening-free and distance-free methods via the phases of the secondary maximum of the NIR-band light curves. We also present 14 near-infrared spectra from $-18$ to $+49$~days relative to the $B$-band maximum light, providing constraints on the amount of swept-up hydrogen from the companion star in the context of the single degenerate progenitor scenario. No $Paβ$ emission feature was detected from our post-maximum NIR spectra, placing a hydrogen mass upper limit of 0.1 $M_{\odot}$. The overall optical/NIR photometric and NIR spectral evolution of SN 2017cbv is similar to that of a normal SN~Ia, even though its early evolution is marked by a flux excess no seen in most other well-observed normal SNe~Ia. We also compare the exquisite light curves of SN 2017cbv with some $M_{ch}$ DDT models and sub-$M_{ch}$ double detonation models.

SN 2018zd: An Unusual Stellar Explosion as Part of the Diverse Type II Supernova Landscape

We present extensive observations of SN 2018zd covering the first $\sim450$\,d after the explosion. This SN shows a possible shock-breakout signal $\sim3.6$\,hr after the explosion in the unfiltered light curve, and prominent flash-ionisation spectral features within the first week. The unusual photospheric temperature rise (rapidly from $\sim 12,000$\,K to above 18,000\,K) within the earliest few days suggests that the ejecta were continuously heated. Both the significant temperature rise and the flash spectral features can be explained with the interaction of the SN ejecta with the massive stellar wind ($0.18^{+0.05}_{-0.10}\, \rm M_{\odot}$), which accounts for the luminous peak ($L_{\rm max} = [1.36\pm 0.63] \times 10^{43}\, \rm erg\,s^{-1}$) of SN 2018zd. The luminous peak and low expansion velocity ($v \approx 3300$ km s$^{-1}$) make SN 2018zd to be like a member of the LLEV (luminous SNe II with low expansion velocities) events originated due to circumstellar interaction. The relatively fast post-peak decline allows a classification of SN 2018zd as a transition event morphologically linking SNe~IIP and SNe~IIL. In the radioactive-decay phase, SN 2018zd experienced a significant flux drop and behaved more like a low-luminosity SN~IIP both spectroscopically and photometrically. This contrast indicates that circumstellar interaction plays a vital role in modifying the observed light curves of SNe~II. Comparing nebular-phase spectra with model predictions suggests that SN 2018zd arose from a star of $\sim 12\,\rm M_{\odot}$. Given the relatively small amount of $^{56}$Ni ($0.013 - 0.035 \rm M_{\odot}$), the massive stellar wind, and the faint X-ray radiation, the progenitor of SN 2018zd could be a massive asymptotic giant branch star which collapsed owing to electron capture.

SN 2019ehk: A Double-Peaked Ca-rich Transient with Luminous X-ray Emission and Shock-Ionized Spectral Features

We present panchromatic observations and modeling of the Calcium-rich supernova 2019ehk in the star-forming galaxy M100 (d$\approx$16.2 Mpc) starting 10 hours after explosion and continuing for ~300 days. SN 2019ehk shows a double-peaked optical light curve peaking at $t = 3$ and $15$ days. The first peak is coincident with luminous, rapidly decaying $\textit{Swift}$-XRT discovered X-ray emission ($L_x\approx10^{41}~\rm{erg~s^{-1}}$ at 3 days; $L_x \propto t^{-3}$), and a Shane/Kast spectral detection of narrow H$α$ and He II emission lines ($v \approx 500$ km/s) originating from pre-existent circumstellar material. We attribute this phenomenology to radiation from shock interaction with extended, dense material surrounding the progenitor star at $r<10^{15}$ cm and the resulting cooling emission. We calculate a total CSM mass of $\sim$ $7\times10^{-3}$ $\rm{M_{\odot}}$ with particle density $n\approx10^{9}\,\rm{cm^{-3}}$. Radio observations indicate a significantly lower density $n < 10^{4}\,\rm{cm^{-3}}$ at larger radii. The photometric and spectroscopic properties during the second light curve peak are consistent with those of Ca-rich transients (rise-time of $t_r =13.4\pm0.210$ days and a peak B-band magnitude of $M_B =-15.1\pm0.200$ mag). We find that SN 2019ehk synthesized $(3.1\pm0.11)\times10^{-2} ~ \rm{M_{\odot}}$ of ${}^{56}\textrm{Ni}$ and ejected $M_{\rm ej} = (0.72\pm 0.040)~\rm{M_{\odot}}$ total with a kinetic energy $E_{\rm k}=(1.8\pm0.10)\times10^{50}~\rm{erg}$. Finally, deep $\textit{HST}$ pre-explosion imaging at the SN site constrains the parameter space of viable stellar progenitors to massive stars in the lowest mass bin (~10 $\rm{M_{\odot}}$) in binaries that lost most of their He envelope or white dwarfs. The explosion and environment properties of SN 2019ehk further restrict the potential WD progenitor systems to low-mass hybrid HeCO WD + CO WD binaries.

A Compact X-Ray Emitting Binary in Likely Association with 4FGL J0935.3+0901

4FGL J0935.3+0901 is a gamma-ray source detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. We have conducted detailed analysis of the LAT data for this source and multi-wavelength studies of the source field. Its gamma-ray emission can be described with a power law ($Γ=2.0\pm0.2$) with an exponential cutoff ($E_c=2.9\pm1.6$ GeV), while the flux shows significant long-term variations. From analysis of archival Neil Gehrels Swift X-ray Telescope data, we find only one X-ray source in the LAT's 2$σ$ error region. Within a 3.7" radius error circle of the X-ray source, there is only one optical object down to $r'\sim$23 mag. Time-resolved photometry of the optical object indicates a likely 2.5~hr periodic modulation, while its spectrum shows double-peaked hydrogen and helium emission lines (similar to those seen in accretion discs in low-mass X-ray binaries). Combining these results, we conclude that we have discovered a compact X-ray emitting binary in likely association with 4FGL J0935.3+0901, i.e., a millisecond pulsar (MSP) binary. We discuss the implication of the optical spectral features: this binary could be a transitional MSP system at a sub-luminous disc state, although the other possibility, the binary in a rotation-powered state showing the optical emission lines due to intrabinary interaction processes, can not be excluded. Further observational studies will help determine detailed properties of this candidate MSP binary and thus clarify its current state.

Flash ionization signatures in the type Ibn supernova SN 2019uo

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the type Ibn supernova (SN) 2019uo, the second ever SN Ibn with flash ionization (He II, C III, N III) features in its early spectra. SN 2019uo displays a rapid post-peak luminosity decline of 0.1 mag d$^{-1}$ similar to most of the SNe Ibn, but is fainter ($M^V_{max} = -18.30 \pm 0.24$ mag) than a typical SN Ibn and shows a color evolution that places it between SNe Ib and the most extreme SNe Ibn. SN 2019uo shows P-cygni He I features in the early spectra which gradually evolves and becomes emission dominated post peak. It also shows faster evolution in line velocities as compared to most other members of the type Ibn subclass. The bolometric light curve is fairly described by a $^{56}$Ni + circumstellar interaction model.

A wide star-black-hole binary system from radial-velocity measurements

All stellar mass black holes have hitherto been identified by X-rays emitted by gas that is accreting onto the black hole from a companion star. These systems are all binaries with black holes below 30 M$_{\odot}$$^{1-4}$. Theory predicts, however, that X-ray emitting systems form a minority of the total population of star-black hole binaries$^{5,6}$. When the black hole is not accreting gas, it can be found through radial velocity measurements of the motion of the companion star. Here we report radial velocity measurements of a Galactic star, LB-1, which is a B-type star, taken over two years. We find that the motion of the B-star and an accompanying H$α$ emission line require the presence of a dark companion with a mass of $68^{+11}_{-13}$ M$_{\odot}$, which can only be a black hole. The long orbital period of 78.9 days shows that this is a wide binary system. The gravitational wave experiments have detected similarly massive black holes$^{7,8}$, but forming such massive ones in a high-metallicity environment would be extremely challenging to current stellar evolution theories$^{9-11}$.

On the Ca-strong 1991bg-like type Ia supernova 2016hnk: evidence for a Chandrasekhar-mass explosion

We present a comprehensive dataset of optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of type~Ia supernova (SN) 2016hnk, combined with integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of its host galaxy, MCG -01-06-070, and nearby environment. Properties of the SN local environment are characterized by means of single stellar population synthesis applied to IFS observations taken two years after the SN exploded. SN 2016hnk spectra are compared to other 1991bg-like SNe Ia, 2002es-like SNe Ia, and Ca-rich transients. In addition, abundance stratification modelling is used to identify the various spectral features in the early phase spectral sequence and the dataset is also compared to a modified non-LTE model previously produced for the sublumnious SN 1999by. SN 2016hnk is consistent with being a sub-luminous (M$_{\rm B}=-16.7$ mag, s$_{\rm BV}$=0.43$\pm$0.03), highly reddened object. IFS of its host galaxy reveals both a significant amount of dust at the SN location, as well as residual star formation and a high proportion of old stellar populations in the local environment compared to other locations in the galaxy, which favours an old progenitor for SN 2016hnk. Inspection of a nebular spectrum obtained one year after maximum contains two narrow emission lines attributed to the forbidden [Ca II] $λλ$7291,7324 doublet with a Doppler shift of 700 km s$^{-1}$. Based on various observational diagnostics, we argue that the progenitor of SN 2016hnk was likely a near Chandrasekhar-mass ($M_{\rm Ch}$) carbon-oxygen white dwarf that produced 0.108 $M_\odot$ of $^{56}$Ni. Our modeling suggests that the narrow [Ca II] features observed in the nebular spectrum are associated with $^{48}$Ca from electron capture during the explosion, which is expected to occur only in white dwarfs that explode near or at the $M_{\rm Ch}$ limit.

Observations of Type Ia Supernova 2014J for Nearly 900 Days and Constraints on Its Progenitor System

We present extensive ground-based and $Hubble~Space~Telescope$ ($HST$) photometry of the highly reddened, very nearby type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2014J in M82, covering the phases from 9 days before to about 900 days after the $B$-band maximum. SN 2014J is similar to other normal SNe Ia near the maximum light, but it shows flux excess in the $B$ band in the early nebular phase. This excess flux emission can be due to light scattering by some structures of circumstellar materials located at a few 10$^{17}$ cm, consistent with a single degenerate progenitor system or a double degenerate progenitor system with mass outflows in the final evolution or magnetically driven winds around the binary system. At t$\sim$+300 to $\sim$+500 days past the $B$-band maximum, the light curve of SN 2014J shows a faster decline relative to the $^{56}$Ni decay. Such a feature can be attributed to the significant weakening of the emission features around [Fe III] $λ$4700 and [Fe II] $λ$5200 rather than the positron escape as previously suggested. Analysis of the $HST$ images taken at t$>$600 days confirms that the luminosity of SN 2014J maintains a flat evolution at the very late phase. Fitting the late-time pseudo-bolometric light curve with radioactive decay of $^{56}$Ni, $^{57}$Ni and $^{55}$Fe isotopes, we obtain the mass ratio $^{57}$Ni/$^{56}$Ni as $0.035 \pm 0.011$, which is consistent with the corresponding value predicted from the 2D and 3D delayed-detonation models. Combined with early-time analysis, we propose that delayed-detonation through single degenerate scenario is most likely favored for SN 2014J.

The Young and Nearby Normal Type Ia Supernova 2018gv: UV-Optical Observations and the Earliest Spectropolarimetry

The non-detection of companion stars in Type Ia supernova (SN) progenitor systems lends support to the notion of double-degenerate (DD) systems and explosions triggered by the merging of two white dwarfs. This very asymmetric process should lead to a conspicuous polarimetric signature. By contrast, observations consistently find very low continuum polarization as the signatures from the explosion process largely dominate over the pre-explosion configuration within several days. Critical information about the interaction of the ejecta with a companion and any circumstellar matter is encoded in the early polarization spectra. In this study, we obtain spectropolarimetry of SN\,2018gv with the ESO Very Large Telescope at $-$13.6 days relative to the $B-$band maximum light, or $\sim$5 days after the estimated explosion --- the earliest spectropolarimetric observations to date of any Type Ia SN. These early observations still show a low continuum polarization ($\lesssim$0.2\%) and moderate line polarization (0.30$\pm$0.04\% for the prominent \ion{Si}{2} $λ$6355 feature and 0.85$\pm$0.04\% for the high-velocity Ca component). The high degree of spherical symmetry implied by the low line and continuum polarization at this early epoch is consistent with explosion models of delayed detonations and is inconsistent with the merger-induced explosion scenario. The dense UV and optical photometry and optical spectroscopy within the first $\sim$100 days after the maximum light indicate that SN\,2018gv is a normal Type Ia SN with similar spectrophotometric behavior to SN\,2011fe.

Probing the Final-stage Progenitor Evolution for Type IIP Supernova 2017eaw in NGC 6946

We presented a detailed analysis of progenitor properties of type IIP supernova 2017eaw in NGC 6946, based on the pre-explosion images and early-time observations obtained immediately after the explosion. An unusually red star, with M$_{F814W}$ = $-$6.9 mag and m$_{F606W}$$-$ m$_{F814W}=$2.9$\pm$0.2 mag, can be identified at the SN position in the pre-discovery Hubble Space Telescope(HST) images taken in 2016. The observed spectral energy distribution of this star, covering the wavelength of 0.6-2.0$\ \mathrm{μm}$, matches that of an M4-type red supergiant (RSG) with a temperature of about 3550 K. These results suggest that SN 2017eaw has a RSG progenitor with an initial mass of 12$\pm$2 M$_\odot$. The absolute F814W-band magnitude of this progenitor star is found to evolve from $-$7.2 mag in 2004 to $-$6.9 mag in 2016. Such a dimming effect is, however, unpredicted for a RSG in its neon/oxygen burning phase when its luminosity should modestly increase. The spectrum of SN 2017eaw taken a few hours after discovery clearly shows a narrow H$_α$ emission feature blueshifted by $\sim$160 km s$^{-1}$. This narrow component disappeared in the spectrum taken two days later, suggesting the presence of a circumstellar material (CSM) shell (i.e., at a distance of $<$2.1-4.3$\times$10$^{14}$ cm). Combining the inferred distance with the expansion velocity of the CSM, we suggest that the progenitor of SN 2017eaw should have experienced violent mass loss at about 1-2 years prior to explosion, perhaps invoked by pulsational envelop ejection. This mechanism may help explain its luminosity decline in 2016 as well as the lack of detections of RSGs with initial mass in the range of 17 M$_\odot<$ M $<$ 25 M$_\odot$ as progenitors of SNe IIP.

Observations of A Fast-Expanding and UV-Bright Type Ia Supernova SN 2013gs

In this paper, we present extensive optical and ultraviolet (UV) observations of the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2013gs discovered during the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey. The photometric observations in the optical show that the light curves of SN 2013gs is similar to that of normal SNe Ia, with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{B}$ = $-$19.25 $\pm$ 0.15 mag and a post-maximum decline rate $Δ$m$_{15}$(B) = 1.00 $ \pm $ 0.05 mag. \emph{Gehrels Swift} UVOT observations indicate that SN 2013gs shows unusually strong UV emission (especially in the $uvw1$ band) at around the maximum light (M$_{uvw1}$ $\sim$ $-$18.9 mag). The SN is characterized by relatively weak Fe~{\sc ii} {\sc iii} absorptions at $\sim$ 5000Å in the early spectra and a larger expansion velocity ($v_{Si}$ $\sim$ 13,000 km s$^{-1}$ around the maximum light) than the normal-velocity SNe Ia. We discuss the relation between the $uvw1-v$ color and some observables, including Si~{\sc ii} velocity, line strength of Si~{\sc ii} $λ$6355, Fe~{\sc ii}/{\sc iii} lines and $Δm_{15}$(B). Compared to other fast-expanding SNe Ia, SN 2013gs exhibits Si and Fe absorption lines with similar strength and bluer $uvw1-v$ color. We briefly discussed the origin of the observed UV dispersion of SNe Ia.

Observations of SN 2017ein Reveal Shock Breakout Emission and A Massive Progenitor Star for a Type Ic Supernova

We present optical and ultraviolet observations of nearby type Ic supernova SN 2017ein as well as detailed analysis of its progenitor properties from both the early-time observations and the prediscovery Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. The optical light curves started from within one day to $\sim$275 days after explosion, and optical spectra range from $\sim$2 days to $\sim$90 days after explosion. Compared to other normal SNe Ic like SN 2007gr and SN 2013ge, \mbox{SN 2017ein} seems to have more prominent C{\footnotesize II} absorption and higher expansion velocities in early phases, suggestive of relatively lower ejecta mass. The earliest photometry obtained for \mbox{SN 2017ein} show indications of shock cooling. The best-fit obtained by including a shock cooling component gives an estimate of the envelope mass as $\sim$0.02 M$_{\odot}$ and stellar radius as 8$\pm$4 R$_{\odot}$. Examining the pre-explosion images taken with the HST WFPC2, we find that the SN position coincides with a luminous and blue point-like source, with an extinction-corrected absolute magnitude of M$_V$$\sim$$-$8.2 mag and M$_I$$\sim$$-$7.7 mag.Comparisons of the observations to the theoretical models indicate that the counterpart source was either a single WR star or a binary with whose members had high initial masses, or a young compact star cluster. To further distinguish between different scenarios requires revisiting the site of the progenitor with HST after the SN fades away.

A 34.5 day quasi-periodic oscillation in gamma-ray emission from the blazar PKS 2247-131

Since 2016 October, the active galaxy PKS 2247-131 has undergone a gamma-ray outburst, which we studied using data obtained with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The emission arises from a relativistic jet in PKS 2247-131, as an optical spectrum only shows a few weak absorption lines, typical of the BL Lacertae sub-class of the blazar class of active galactic nuclei. Here we report a ~34.5 day quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the emission after the initial flux peak of the outburst. Compared to one-year time-scale QPOs, previously identified in blazars in Fermi energies, PKS 2247-131 exhibits the first clear case of a relatively short, month-like oscillation. We show that this QPO can be explained in terms of a helical structure in the jet, where the viewing angle to the dominant emission region in the jet undergoes periodic changes. The time scale of the QPO suggests the presence of binary supermassive black holes in PKS 2247-131.

Optical Observations of the Young Type Ic Supernova SN 2014L in M99

We present optical spectroscopic and photometric observations of the nearby type Ic supernova (SN Ic) SN 2014L. This SN was discovered by the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey (TNTS) in the nearby type-Sc spiral galaxy M99 (NGC 4254). Fitting to the early-time light curve indicates that SN 2014L was detected at only a few hours after the shock breakout, and it reached a peak brightness of $M_{\rm V} = -17.73 \pm 0.28$ mag ($L= [2.06\pm 0.50] \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$) approximately 13 days later. SN 2014L shows a close resemblance to SN 2007gr in the photometric evolution, while it shows stronger absorption features of intermediate-mass elements (especially \CaII) in the early-time spectra. Based on simple modeling of the observed light curves, we derived the mass of synthesized $^{56}$Ni as $M_{\rm Ni} = 0.075 \pm 0.025 M_{\odot}$, and the mass and total energy of the ejecta as $M_{\rm ej} = 1.00 \pm 0.20 M_\odot$ and $E_{\rm ej}=1.45\pm0.25$ foe, respectively. Given these typical explosion parameters, the early detection, and the extensive observations, we suggest that SN 2014L could be a template sample for the investigation of SNe Ic.
