Diffusion spiders: Green kernel, excessive functions and optimal stopping

A diffusion spider is a strong Markov process with continuous paths taking values on a graph with one vertex and a finite number of edges (of infinite length). An example is Walsh's Brownian spider where the process on each edge behaves as Brownian motion. We calculate the density of the resolvent kernel in terms of the characteristics of the underlying diffusion. Excessive functions are studied via the Martin boundary theory. The main result is an explicit expression for the representing measure of a given excessive function. These results are used to solve optimal stopping problems for diffusion spiders.

On asymptotic relations between singular and constrained control problems of one-dimensional diffusions

We study the asymptotic relations between certain singular and constrained control problems for one-dimensional diffusions with both discounted and ergodic objectives. By constrained control problems we mean that controlling is allowed only at independent Poisson arrival times. We show that when the underlying diffusion is recurrent, the solutions of the discounted problems converge in Abelian sense to those of their ergodic counterparts. Moreover, we show that the solutions of the constrained problems converge to those of their singular counterparts when the Poisson rate tends to infinity. We illustrate the results with drifted Brownian motion and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

Ergodic control of diffusions with random intervention times

We study an ergodic singular control problem with constraint of a regular one-dimensional linear diffusion. The constraint allows the agent to control the diffusion only at jump times of independent Poisson process. Under relatively weak assumptions, we characterize the optimal solution as impulse type control policy, where it is optimal to exert the exact amount of control needed to push the process to a unique threshold. Moreover, we discuss the connection of the present problem to ergodic singular control problems, and finally, illustrate the results with different well-known cost and diffusion structures.

A class of Solvable Multiple Entry Problems with Forced Exits

We study an optimal investment problem with multiple entries and forced exits. A closed form solution of the optimisation problem is presented for general underlying diffusion dynamics and a general running payoff function in the case when forced exits occur on the jump times of a Poisson process. Furthermore, we allow the investment opportunity to be subject to the risk of a catastrophe that can occur at the jumps of the Poisson process. More precisely, we attach IID Bernoulli trials to the jump times and if the trial fails, no further re-entries are allowed. We show in the general case that the optimal investment threshold is independent of the success probability is the Bernoulli trials. The results are illustrated with explicit examples.

Resolvent-Techniques For Multiple Exercise Problems

We study optimal multiple stopping of strong Markov processes with random refraction periods. The refraction periods are assumed to be exponentially distributed with a common rate and independent of the underlying dynamics. Our main tool is using the resolvent operator. In the first part, we reduce infinite stopping problems to ordinary ones in a general strong Markov setting. This leads to explicit solutions for wide classes of such problems. Starting from this result, we analyze problems with finitely many exercise rights and explain solution methods for some classes of problems with underlying Lévy and diffusion processes, where the optimal characteristics of the problems can be identified more explicitly. We illustrate the main results with explicit examples.

Swing options in commodity markets: A multidimensional Lévy diffusion model

We study valuation of swing options on commodity markets when the commodity prices are driven by multiple factors. The factors are modeled as diffusion processes driven by a multidimensional Lévy process. We set up a valuation model in terms of a dynamic programming problem where the option can be exercised continuously in time. Here, the number of swing rights is given by a total volume constraint. We analyze some general properties of the model and study the solution by analyzing the associated HJB-equation. Furthermore, we discuss the issues caused by the multi-dimensionality of the commodity price model. The results are illustrated numerically with three explicit examples.

Optimal portfolios in commodity futures markets

We consider portfolio optimization in futures markets. We model the entire futures price curve at once as a solution of a stochastic partial differential equation. The agents objective is to maximize her utility from the final wealth when investing in futures contracts. We study a class of futures price curve models which admit a finite-dimensional realization. Using this, we recast the portfolio optimization problem as a finite-dimensional control problem and study its solvability.
