Large positive solutions for a class of 1-D diffusive logistic problems with general boundary conditions

The first goal of this paper is to establish the existence of a positive solution for the singular boundary value problem (1.1), where $\mathcal{B}$ is a general boundary operator of Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin type, either classical or non-classical; in the sense that, as soon as $\mathcal{B}u(0)=-u'(0)+βu(0)$, the coefficient $β$ can take any real value, not necessarily $β\geq 0$ as in the classical Sturm--Liouville theory. Since the function $f(u):=au^p -λu$, $u\geq 0$, is not increasing if $λ>0$, the uniqueness of the positive solution of (1.1) is far from obvious, in general, even for the simplest case when $a(x)$ is a positive constant. The second goal of this paper is to establish the uniqueness of the positive solution of (1.1) in that case. At a later stage, denoting by $L_λ$ the unique positive solution of (1.1) when $a(x)$ is a positive constant, we will characterize the point-wise behavior of $L_λ$ as $λ\to \pm \infty$. It turns out that any positive solution of (1.1) mimics the behavior of $L_λ$ as $λ\to \pm\infty$. Finally, we will establish the uniqueness of the positive solution of (1.1) when $a(x)$ is non-increasing in $[0,R]$, $λ\geq 0$, and $β<0$ if $-u'(0)+βu(0)=0$.

Global Leray-Schauder continuation for Fredholm operators

This paper ascertains the global behavior of the forward and backward branches of solutions provided by the Leray-Schauder continuation theorem for orientable $\mathcal{C}^1$ Fredholm maps, as developed by the authors in [54]. Under properness on bounded sets and a nonzero local index at the given base solution, each branch satisfies the following alternative: either it is unbounded, or it reaches the boundary of the domain, or it accumulates at a different solution on the base parameter level. When the component is bounded and stays in the interior, there is a degree balance on the base slice entailing a vanishing sum of local indices and, in particular, the existence of an even number of non-degenerate contact points. For real-analytic maps we construct locally injective parameterizations that exhibit blow-up, approach to the boundary, or return to the base level. An application to a quasilinear boundary value problem driven by the mean-curvature and Minkowski operators illustrates the global results.

High multiplicity and global structure of coexistence states in a predator-prey model with saturation

This paper establishes that, under the appropriate range of values of the parameters involved in the formulation of the model, a diffusive predator-prey system with saturation can have an arbitrarily large number of coexistence states for sufficiently large saturation rates. Moreover, it ascertains the global structure of the set of coexistence states in the limiting system as the saturation rate blows-up.

Global multiplicity results in a Moore-Nehari type problem with a spectral parameter

This paper analyzes the structure of the set of positive solutions of a Moore-Nehari type problem, where $a\equiv a_h$ is a piece-wise constant function defined for some $h\in (0,1)$. In our analysis, $λ$ is regarded as a bifurcation parameter, whereas $h$ is viewed as a deformation parameter between the autonomous case when $a=1$ and the linear case when $a=0$. In this paper, besides establishing some of the multiplicity results suggested by previous numerical experiments (see Cubillos, López-Gómez and Tellini, 2024), we have analyzed the asymptotic behavior of the positive solutions of the problem as $h\uparrow 1$, when the shadow system of the problem is the linear equation $-u''=π^2 u$. This is the first paper where such a problem has been addressed. Numerics is of no help in analyzing this singular perturbation problem because the positive solutions blow-up point-wise in $(0,1)$ as $h\uparrow 1$ if $λ<π^2$.

Non-negative solutions of a sublinear elliptic problem

In this paper the existence of solutions, $(λ,u)$, of the problem $$-Δu=λu -a(x)|u|^{p-1}u \quad \hbox{in }Ω, \qquad u=0 \quad \hbox{on}\;\;\partialΩ,$$ is explored for $0 < p < 1$. When $p>1$, it is known that there is an unbounded component of such solutions bifurcating from $(σ_1, 0)$, where $σ_1$ is the smallest eigenvalue of $-Δ$ in $Ω$ under Dirichlet boundary conditions on $\partialΩ$. These solutions have $u \in P$, the interior of the positive cone. The continuation argument used when $p>1$ to keep $u \in P$ fails if $0 < p < 1$. Nevertheless when $0 < p < 1$, we are still able to show that there is a component of solutions bifurcating from $(σ_1, \infty)$, unbounded outside of a neighborhood of $(σ_1, \infty)$, and having $u \gneq 0$. This non-negativity for $u$ cannot be improved as is shown via a detailed analysis of the simplest autonomous one-dimensional version of the problem: its set of non-negative solutions possesses a countable set of components, each of them consisting of positive solutions with a fixed (arbitrary) number of bumps. Finally, the structure of these components is fully described.

High multiplicity of positive solutions in a superlinear problem of Moore-Nehari type

In this paper we consider a superlinear one-dimensional elliptic boundary value problem that generalizes the one studied by Moore and Nehari in [43]. Specifically, we deal with piecewise-constant weight functions in front of the nonlinearity with an arbitrary number $κ\geq 1$ of vanishing regions. We study, from an analytic and numerical point of view, the number of positive solutions, depending on the value of a parameter $λ$ and on $κ$. Our main results are twofold. On the one hand, we study analytically the behavior of the solutions, as $λ\downarrow-\infty$, in the regions where the weight vanishes. Our result leads us to conjecture the existence of $2^{κ+1}-1$ solutions for sufficiently negative $λ$. On the other hand, we support such a conjecture with the results of numerical simulations which also shed light on the structure of the global bifurcation diagrams in $λ$ and the profiles of positive solutions. Finally, we give additional numerical results suggesting that the same high multiplicity result holds true for a much larger class of weights, also arbitrarily close to situations where there is uniqueness of positive solutions.

Blow-up estimates and a priori bounds for the positive solutions of a class of superlinear indefinite elliptic problems

In this paper we find out some new blow-up estimates for the positive explosive solutions of a paradigmatic class of elliptic boundary value problems of superlinear indefinite type. These estimates are obtained by combining the scaling technique of Guidas-Spruck together with a generalized De Giorgi-Moser weak Harnack inequality found, very recently, by Sirakov. In a further step, based on a comparison result of Amann and López-Gómez, we will show how these bounds provide us with some sharp a priori estimates for the classical positive solutions of a wide variety of superlinear indefinite problems. It turns out that this is the first general result where the decay rates of the potential in front of the nonlinearity $a(x)$ do not play any role for getting a priori bounds for the positive solutions when $N\geq 3$.

Bifurcation Theory for Fredholm Operators

This paper consists of four parts. It begins by using the authors's generalized Schauder formula, [50], and the algebraic multiplicity, $χ$, of Esquinas and López-Gómez [18,17,40] to package and sharpening all existing results in local and global bifurcation theory for Fredholm operators through the recent author's axiomatization of the Fitzpatrick-Pejsachowicz-Rabier degree, [51]. This facilitates reformulating and refining all existing results in a compact and unifying way. Then, the local structure of the solution set of analytic nonlinearities $\mathfrak{F}(λ,u)=0$ at a simple degenerate eigenvalue is ascertained by means of some concepts and devices of Algebraic Geometry and Galois Theory, which establishes a bisociation between Bifurcation Theory and Algebraic Geometry. Finally, the unilateral theorems of [40,42], as well as the refinement of Xi and Wang [63], are substantially generalized. This paper also analyzes two important examples to illustrate and discuss the relevance of the abstract theory. The second one studies the regular positive solutions of a multidimensional quasilinear boundary value problem of mixed type related to the mean curvature operator.

A robust multiplicity result in a generalized diffusive predator-prey model

This paper analyzes the generalized spatially heterogeneous diffusive predator-prey model introduced by the authors in \cite{LGMH20}, whose interaction terms depend on a saturation coefficient $m(x)\gneq0$. As the amplitude of the saturation term, measured by $\|m\|_\infty$, blows up to infinity, the existence of, at least, two coexistence states, is established in the region of the parameters where the semitrivial positive solution is linearly stable, regardless the sizes and the shapes of the remaining function coefficients in the setting of the model. In some further special cases, an $S$-shaped component of coexistence states can be constructed, which causes the existence of, at least, three coexistence states, though this multiplicity occurs within the parameter regions where the semitrivial positive solution is linearly unstable. Therefore, these multiplicity results inherit a rather different nature.

Subharmonic solutions for a class of predator-prey models with degenerate weights in periodic environments

This paper deals with the existence, multiplicity, minimal complexity and global structure of the subharmonic solutions to a class of planar Hamiltonian systems with periodic coefficients, being the classical predator-prey model of V. Volterra its most paradigmatic example. By means of a topological approach based on techniques from global bifurcation theory, the first part of the paper ascertains their nature, multiplicity and minimal complexity, as well as their global minimal structure, in terms of the configuration of the function coefficients in the setting of the model. The second part of the paper introduces a dynamical system approach based on the theory of topological horseshoes that permits to detect, besides subharmonic solutions, ``chaotic-type'' solutions. As a byproduct of our analysis, the simplest predator-prey prototype models in periodic environments can provoke chaotic dynamics. This cannot occur in cooperative and quasi-cooperative dynamics, as a consequence of the ordering imposed by the maximum principle.

Generating loops and isolas in semilinear elliptic BVP's

In this paper, we ascertain the global $λ$-structure of the set of positive and negative solutions bifurcating from $u=0$ for the semilinear elliptic BVP \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -dΔu= λ\langle \mathfrak{a},\nabla u\rangle+u+λu^{2}-u^{q} & \text{ in } Ω, \\ u=0 & \text{ on } \partialΩ, \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} according to the values of $d>0$ and the integer number $q\geq 4$. Figures 1.1-1.3 summarize the main findings of this paper according to the values of $d$ and $q$. Note that the role played by the parameter $λ$ in this model is very special, because, besides measuring the strength of the convection, it quantifies the amplitude of the nonlinear term $λu^2$. We regard to this problem as a mathematical toy to generate solution loops and isolas in Reaction Diffusion equations.

A bridge between Vector Bundle Theory and Nonlinear Spectral Theory

This paper establishes some hidden connections between the theory of generalized algebraic multiplicities, the intersection index of algebraic varieties, and the notion of orientability of vector bundles. The novel approach adopted in it facilitates the definition of several invariants closely related to the first Stiefel-Whitney fundamental class through some path integration techniques.

Rich dynamics in planar systems with heterogeneous nonnegative weights

This paper studies the global structure of the set of nodal solutions of a generalized Sturm--Liouville boundary value problem associated to the quasilinear equation $$ -(ϕ(u'))'= λu + a(t)g(u), \quad λ\in {\mathbb R}, $$ where $a(t)$ is non-negative with some positive humps separated away by intervals of degeneracy where $a\equiv 0$. When $ϕ(s)=s$ this equation includes a generalized prototype of a classical model going back to Moore and Nehari, 1959. This is the first paper where the general case when $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ has been addressed when $a\gneq 0$. The semilinear case with $a\lneq 0$ has been recently treated by López-Gómez and Rabinowitz.

Axiomatization of the degree of Fitzpatrick, Pejsachowicz and Rabier

In this paper we prove an analogue of the uniqueness theorems of Führer and Amann and Weiss to cover the degree of Fredholm operators of index zero of Fitzpatrick, Pejsachowicz and Rabier, whose range of applicability is substantially wider than for the most classical degrees of Brouwer and Leray-Schauder. A crucial step towards the axiomatization of the Fitzpatrick-Pejsachowicz-Rabier degree is provided by the generalized algebraic multiplicity of Esquinas and López-Gómez, $χ$, and the axiomatization theorem of Mora-Corral. The latest result facilitates the axiomatization of the parity of Fitzpatrick and Pejsachowicz, $σ(\cdot,[a,b])$, which provides the key step for establishing the uniqueness of the degree for Fredholm maps.

Global bifurcation diagrams of positive solutions for a class of 1-D superlinear indefinite problems

This paper analyzes the structure of the set of positive solutions of a class of one-dimensional superlinear indefinite bvp's. It is a paradigm of how mathematical analysis aids the numerical study of a problem, whereas simultaneously its numerical study confirms and illuminates the analysis. On the analytical side, we establish the fast decay of the positive solutions as $λ\downarrow -\infty$ in the region where $a(x)<0$ (see (1.1)), as well as the decay of the solutions of the parabolic counterpart of the model (see (1.2)) as $λ\downarrow-\infty$ on any subinterval of $[0,1]$ where $u_0=0$, provided $u_0$ is a subsolution of (1.1). This result provides us with a proof of a conjecture of [28] under an additional condition of a dynamical nature. On the numerical side, this paper ascertains the global structure of the set of positive solutions on some paradigmatic prototypes whose intricate behavior is far from predictable from existing analytical results.

New Analytical and Geometrical Aspects of the Algebraic Multiplicity

This paper reveals some new analytical and geometrical properties of the generalized algebraic multiplicity, $χ$, introduced in [7, 5] and further developed in [20, 23, 24]. In particular, it establishes a completely new connection between $χ$ and the concept of local intersection index of algebraic varieties, a central device in Algebraic Geometry. This link between Nonlinear Spectral Theory and Algebraic Geometry provides to $χ$ with a deep geometrical meaning. Moreover, $χ$ is characterized through the new notion of local determinant of the Schur operator associated to the linear path, $\mathfrak{L}(λ)$.

Nodal solutions of weighted indefinite problems

This paper analyzes the structure of the set of nodal solutions of a class of one-dimensional superlinear indefinite boundary values problems with an indefinite weight functions in front of the spectral parameter. Quite astonishingly, the associated high order eigenvalues might not be concave as it is the lowest one. As a consequence, in many circumstances the nodal solutions can bifurcate from three or even four bifurcation points from the trivial solution. This paper combines analytical and numerical tools. The analysis carried over on it is a paradigm of how mathematical analysis aids the numerical study of a problem, whereas simultaneously the numerical study confirms and illuminate the analysis.
