On the left primeness of some polynomial matrices with applications to convolutional codes

Maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have the property that their column distances are as large as possible for given rate and degree. There exists a well-known criterion to check whether a code is MDP using the generator or the parity-check matrix of the code. In this paper, we show that under the assumption that $n-k$ divides $δ$ or $k$ divides $δ$, a polynomial matrix that fulfills the MDP criterion is actually always left prime. In particular, when $k$ divides $δ$, this implies that each MDP convolutional code is noncatastrophic. Moreover, when $n-k$ and $k$ do not divide $δ$, we show that the MDP criterion is in general not enough to ensure left primeness. In this case, with one more assumption, we still can guarantee the result.

A decoding algorithm for 2D convolutional codes over the erasure channel

Two-dimensional (2D) convolutional codes are a generalization of (1D) convolutional codes, which are very appropriate for transmission over an erasure channel. In this paper, we present a decoding algorithm for 2D convolutional codes over this kind of channel by reducing the decoding process to several decoding steps with 1D convolutional codes. Moreover, we provide constructions of 2D convolutional codes that are specially taylored to our decoding algorithm.

Complete j-MDP convolutional codes

Maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have been proven to be very suitable for transmission over an erasure channel. In addition, the subclass of complete MDP convolutional codes has the ability to restart decoding after a burst of erasures. However, there is a lack of constructions of these codes over fields of small size. In this paper, we introduce the notion of complete j-MDP convolutional codes, which are a generalization of complete MDP convolutional codes, and describe their decoding properties. In particular, we present a decoding algorithm for decoding erasures within a given time delay T and show that complete T-MDP convolutional codes are optimal for this algorithm. Moreover, using a computer search with the MAPLE software, we determine the minimal binary and non-binary field size for the existence of (2,1,2) complete j-MDP convolutional codes and provide corresponding constructions. We give a description of all (2,1,2) complete MDP convolutional codes over the smallest possible fields, namely F_13 and F_16 and we also give constructions for (2,1,3) complete 4-MDP convolutional codes over F_128 obtained by a randomized computer search.

Construction of Rate (n-1)/n Non-Binary LDPC Convolutional Codes via Difference Triangle Sets

This paper provides a construction of non-binary LDPC convolutional codes, which generalizes the work of Robinson and Bernstein. The sets of integers forming an $(n-1,w)$-difference triangle set are used as supports of the columns of rate $(n-1)/n$ convolutional codes. If the field size is large enough, the Tanner graph associated to the sliding parity-check matrix of the code is free from $4$ and $6$-cycles not satisfying the full rank condition. This is important for improving the performance of a code and avoiding the presence of low-weight codewords and absorbing sets. The parameters of the convolutional code are shown to be determined by the parameters of the underlying difference triangle set. In particular, the free distance of the code is related to $w$ and the degree of the code is linked to the "scope" of the difference triangle set. Hence, the problem of finding families of difference triangle set with minimum scope is equivalent to find convolutional codes with small degree.

Robust low-delay Streaming PIR using convolutional codes

In this paper we investigate the design of a low-delay robust streaming PIR scheme on coded data that is resilient to unresponsive or slow servers and can privately retrieve streaming data in a sequential fashion subject to a fixed decoding delay. We present a scheme based on convolutional codes and the star product and assume no collusion between servers. In particular we propose the use of convolutional codes that have the maximum distance increase, called Maximum Distance Profile (MDP). We show that the proposed scheme can deal with many different erasure patterns.

Constructions of MDS convolutional codes using superregular matrices

Maximum distance separable convolutional codes are the codes that present best performance in error correction among all convolutional codes with certain rate and degree. In this paper, we show that taking the constant matrix coefficients of a polynomial matrix as submatrices of a superregular matrix, we obtain a column reduced generator matrix of an MDS convolutional code with a certain rate and a certain degree. We then present two novel constructions that fulfill these conditions by considering two types of superregular matrices.

Necessary Field Size and Probability for MDP and Complete MDP Convolutional Codes

It has been shown that maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have optimal recovery rate for windows of a certain length, when transmitting over an erasure channel. In addition, the subclass of complete MDP convolutional codes has the ability to reduce the waiting time during decoding. In this paper, we derive upper bounds on the necessary field size for the existence of MDP and complete MDP convolutional codes and show that these bounds improve the already existing ones. Moreover, we derive lower bounds for the probability that a random code is MDP respective complete MDP.

Complete MDP convolutional codes

Maximum distance profile (MDP) convolutional codes have the property that their column distances are as large as possible. It has been shown that, transmitting over an erasure channel, these codes have optimal recovery rate for windows of a certain length. Reverse MDP convolutional codes have the additional advantage that they are suitable for forward and backward decoding algorithms. Beyond that the subclass of complete MDP convolutional codes has the ability to reduce the waiting time during decoding. The first main result of this paper is to show the existence and genericity of complete MDP convolutional codes for all code parameters. The second main contribution is the presentation of two concrete construction techniques to obtain complete MDP convolutional codes. These constructions work for all code parameters but require that the size of the underlying base field is (sufficiently) large.

Uniform Probability and Natural Density of Mutually Left Coprime Polynomial Matrices over Finite Fields

We compute the uniform probability that finitely many polynomials over a finite field are pairwise coprime and compare the result with the formula one gets using the natural density as probability measure. It will turn out that the formulas for the two considered probability measures asymptotically coincide but differ in the exact values. Moreover, we calculate the natural density of mutually left coprime polynomial matrices and compare the result with the formula one gets using the uniform probability distribution. The achieved estimations are not as precise as in the scalar case but again we can show asymptotic coincidence.

The Probability of Primeness for Specially Structured Polynomial Matrices over Finite Fields with Applications to Linear Systems and Convolutional Codes

We calculate the probability that random polynomial matrices over a finite field with certain structures are right prime or left prime, respectively. In particular, we give an asymptotic formula for the probability that finitely many nonsingular polynomial matrices are mutually left coprime. These results are used to estimate the number of reachable and observable linear systems as well as the number of non-catastrophic convolutional codes. Moreover, we are able to achieve an asymptotic formula for the probability that a parallel connected linear system is reachable.
