Exactly solvable non-planar $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ dimer liquids on checkerboard and ruby lattices

We generalize an influential framework for exactly solvable quantum dimer models with dual Ising gauge theory descriptions realizing the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological phase from trivalent to tetravalent parent lattices. The resulting quantum dimer models live on crossed-medial lattices and possess the remarkable feature of having crossed plaquettes, leading to transition graphs with generically intersecting loops. This non-planar structure runs counter to established templates for analytically tractable dimer liquids. As the simplest realization of the construction, we introduce an exactly solvable quantum dimer model on the checkerboard lattice that allows an exact mapping to the toric code, thus providing a particularly direct connection between the latter and Anderson's short range resonating valence bond paradigm. We further show that a corresponding crossed ruby lattice construction, dual to an Ising gauge theory on the kagome lattice, naturally falls within the same framework. More generally, the construction gives rise to a broad class of exactly solvable crossed-medial quantum dimer models and admits natural iteration, generating cascades of solvable $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological dimer liquids beyond the standard planar setting. We furthermore extend Kasteleyn methods to the relevant non-planar graphs, enabling controlled wave-function deformations away from the commuting-projector points while retaining efficient evaluation of correlation functions.

Breakdown of Quantum Chaos in the Staggered-Field XXZ Chain: Confinement and Meson Formation

Confinement of fractionalized excitations can strongly restructure many-body spectra. We investigate this phenomenon in the gapped spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain subject to a staggered field, where spinons bind into domain-wall ``mesons'' deep in the antiferromagnetic phase. We present evidence that this non-integrable model exhibits both Hilbert space fractionalization and quantum scar formation as controlled by the anisotropy parameter $\Delta$. Exact diagonalization across symmetry-resolved sectors reveals a crossover from Gaussian-orthogonal (chaotic) level statistics at weak anisotropy $\Delta \sim 1$ to non-ergodic behavior deep in the antiferromagnetic regime $\Delta\gg 1$ through scrutinizing the adjacent gap ratios, accompanied by a striking banding of eigenstates by domain-wall number in correlation and entanglement measures. The Page-like entanglement dome characteristic of chaotic spectra gives way to suppressed, band-resolved entanglement consistent with emergent quasi-conservation of domain walls. To investigate further the formation mechanism of mesonic scar states, we carry out meson spectroscopy near the two-spinon threshold and compare with the analytic ladder predicted by Rutkevich [Phys. Rev. B 106, 134405 (2022)]. We test the theory through continuum-relative bindings, an offset-removed Airy scaling collapse, and explicit two-meson thresholds that determine the number of stable meson levels. The low-lying spectrum shows close quantitative agreement, while deviations at higher energies are consistent with finite-size and subleading corrections. These results establish a unified account of confinement-induced nonergodicity and provide a template for quantitative meson spectroscopy in quantum spin chains.

Phase transitions in the presence of fluctuating charge-density wave in two-dimensional film of kagome metals

We determine the nature of a phase transition in a model describing an interaction of multiple charge density waves in a two dimensional film. The model was introduced by two of the authors in Phys. Rev. B {\bf 108}, 045119 (2023) to describe fluctuations in charge density wave order in the kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) in two dimensions. The situation is nontrivial since the transition occurs in the region of phase diagram where the unbound vortices compete with the interaction between charge density waves. Here, we study the nature of the phase transition via Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations. The 3-component order parameter, the susceptibility, the energy per site, and the specific heat are measured for a range of temperatures for different lattice sizes $L=8,16,24,32$. The finite size scaling analysis indicates the presence of a second-order transition.

Quantum Many-Body Scars from Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen States in Bilayer Systems

Quantum many-body scar states are special eigenstates of nonintegrable models with distinctive entanglement features that give rise to infinitely long-lived coherent dynamics under quantum quenches from certain initial states. We elaborate on a construction of quantum many-body scar states in which they emerge from Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) states in systems with two layers, wherein the two layers are maximally entangled. We apply this construction to spin systems as well as systems of itinerant fermions and bosons and demonstrate how symmetries can be harnessed to enhance its versatility. We show that several well-known examples of quantum many-body scars, including the tower of states in the spin-1 XY model and the $η$-pairing states in the Fermi-Hubbard model, can be understood within this formalism. We also demonstrate how an {\it infinite} tower of many-body scar states can emerge in bilayer Bose-Hubbard models with charge conservation.

Symmetry-Protected Infinite-Temperature Quantum Memory from Subsystem Codes

We study a mechanism whereby quantum information present in the initial state of a quantum many-body system can be protected for arbitrary times due to a combination of symmetry and spatial locality. Remarkably, the mechanism is sufficiently generic that the dynamics can be fully ergodic upon resolving the protecting symmetry and fixing the encoded quantum state, resulting in an infinite-temperature quantum memory. After exemplifying the mechanism in a strongly nonintegrable two-dimensional (2D) spin model inspired by the surface code, we find it has a natural interpretation in the language of noiseless subsystems and stabilizer subsystem codes. This interpretation yields a number of further examples, including a nonintegrable Hamiltonian with quantum memory based on the Bacon-Shor code. The lifetime of the encoded quantum information in these models is infinite provided the dynamics respect the stabilizer symmetry of the underlying subsystem code. In the presence of symmetry-violating perturbations, we make contact with previous work leveraging the concept of prethermalization to show that the encoded quantum information retains a parametrically long lifetime under dynamics with an enlarged continuous symmetry group. We identify conditions on the underlying subsystem code that enable such a prethermal enhancement of the memory lifetime.

Rainbow Scars: From Area to Volume Law

Quantum many-body scars (QMBS) constitute a new quantum dynamical regime in which rare "scarred" eigenstates mediate weak ergodicity breaking. One open question is to understand the most general setting in which these states arise. In this work, we develop a generic construction that embeds a new class of QMBS, rainbow scars, into the spectrum of an arbitrary Hamiltonian. Unlike other examples of QMBS, rainbow scars display extensive bipartite entanglement entropy while retaining a simple entanglement structure. Specifically, the entanglement scaling is volume-law for a random bipartition, while scaling for a fine-tuned bipartition is sub-extensive. When internal symmetries are present, the construction leads to multiple, and even towers of rainbow scars revealed through distinctive non-thermal dynamics. Remarkably, certain symmetries can lead rainbow scars to arise in translation-invariant models. To this end, we provide an experimental road map for realizing rainbow scar states in a Rydberg-atom quantum simulator, leading to coherent oscillations distinct from the strictly sub-volume-law QMBS previously realized in the same system.

Topological Quantum Many-Body Scars in Quantum Dimer Models on the Kagome Lattice

We present a class of quantum dimer models on the kagome lattice with full translational invariance that feature a quantum many-body scar state of analytically known entanglement properties within their spectra. Using exact diagonalization on lattices of up to 60 sites, we show that non-scar states conform to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Specifically, we show that energies are distributed according to the Gaussian ensemble expected of their respective symmetry sector, illustrate the existence of the scar from bipartite entanglement properties, and demonstrate revival phenomena in studies of fidelity dynamics.

Non-Abelian quasiholes in lattice Moore-Read states and parent Hamiltonians

This work concerns Ising quasiholes in Moore-Read type lattice wave functions derived from conformal field theory. We commence with constructing Moore-Read type lattice states and then add quasiholes to them. By use of Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the features of the quasiholes, such as their size, shape, charge, and braiding properties. The braiding properties, which turn out to be the same as in the continuum Moore-Read state, demonstrate the topological attributes of the Moore-Read lattice states in a direct way. We also derive parent Hamiltonians for which the states with quasiholes included are ground states. One advantage of these Hamiltonians lies therein that we can now braid the quasiholes just by changing the coupling strengths in the Hamiltonian since the Hamiltonian is a function of the positions of the quasiholes. The methodology exploited in this article can also be used to construct other kinds of lattice fractional quantum Hall models containing quasiholes, for example investigation of Fibonacci quasiholes in lattice Read-Rezayi states.

Quasielectrons in lattice Moore-Read models

Moore-Read states can be expressed as conformal blocks of the underlying rational conformal field theory, which provides a well explored description for the insertion of quasiholes. It is known, however, that quasielectrons are more difficult to describe in continuous systems, since the natural guess for how to construct them leads to a singularity. In this work, we show that the singularity problem does not arise for lattice Moore-Read states. This allows us to construct Moore-Read Pfaffian states on lattices for filling fraction 5/2 with both quasiholes and quasielectrons in a simple way. We investigate the density profile, charge, size and braiding properties of the anyons by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Further we derive an exact few-body parent Hamiltonian for the states. Finally, we compare our results to the density profile, charge and shape of anyons in the Kapit-Mueller model by means of exact diagonalization.

Quasiparticles as Detector of Topological Quantum Phase Transitions

A number of tools have been developed to detect topological phase transitions in strongly correlated quantum systems. They apply under different conditions, but do not cover the full range of many-body models. It is hence desirable to further expand the toolbox. Here, we propose to use quasiparticle properties to detect quantum phase transitions. The approach is independent from the choice of boundary conditions, and it does not assume a particular lattice structure. The probe is hence suitable for, e.g., fractals and quasicrystals. The method requires that one can reliably create quasiparticles in the considered systems. In the simplest cases, this can be done by a pinning potential, while it is less straightforward in more complicated systems. We apply the method to several rather different examples, including one that cannot be handled by the commonly used probes, and in all the cases we find that the numerical costs are low. This is so, because a simple property, such as the charge of the anyons, is sufficient to detect the phase transition point. For some of the examples, this allows us to study larger systems and/or further parameter values compared to previous studies.

Quantum many-body scars with chiral topological order in 2D and critical properties in 1D

We construct few-body, interacting, nonlocal Hamiltonians with a quantum scar state in an otherwise thermalizing many-body spectrum. In one dimension, the embedded state is a critical state, and in two dimensions, the embedded state is a chiral topologically ordered state. The models are defined on slightly disordered lattices, and the scar state appears independent of the precise realization of the disorder. A parameter allows the scar state to be placed at any position in the spectrum. We show that the level spacing distributions are Wigner-Dyson and that the entanglement entropies of the states in the middle of the spectrum are close to the Page value. Finally, we confirm the topological order in the scar state by showing that one can insert anyons into the state.

Anyonic quasiparticles of hardcore anyons

Strongly interacting topologically ordered many-body systems consisting of fermions or bosons can host exotic quasiparticles with anyonic statistics. This raises the question whether many-body systems of anyons can also form anyonic quasiparticles. Here, we show that one can, indeed, construct many-anyon wavefunctions with anyonic quasiparticles. The braiding statistics of the emergent anyons are different from those of the original anyons. We investigate hole type and particle type anyonic quasiparticles in Abelian systems on a two-dimensional lattice and compute the density profiles and braiding properties of the emergent anyons by employing Monte Carlo simulations.

Exact Solution and Correlations of a Quantum Dimer Model on the Checkerboard Lattice

We present analytic results for a special dimer model on the {\em non-bipartite} and {\em non-planar} checkerboard lattice that does not allow for parallel dimers surrounding diagonal links. We {\em exactly} calculate the number of closed packed dimer coverings on finite checkerboard lattices under periodic boundary conditions, and determine all dimer-dimer correlations. The latter are found to vanish beyond a certain distance. We find that this solvable model, despite being non-planar, is in close kinship with well-known paradigm-setting planar counterparts that allow exact mappings to $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory.

First-order Néel-cVBS transition in a model square lattice $S=1$ antiferromagnet

We study the Néel to four-fold columnar valence bond solid (cVBS) quantum phase transition in a sign free $S=1$ square lattice model. This is the same kind of transition that for $S=1/2$ has been argued to realize the prototypical deconfined critical point. Extensive numerical simulations of the square lattice $S=1/2$ Néel-VBS transition have found consistency with the DCP scenario with no direct evidence for first order behavior. In contrast to the $S=1/2$ case, in our quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the $S=1$ model, we present unambiguous evidence for a direct conventional first-order quantum phase transition. Classic signs for a first order transition demonstrating co-existence including double peaked histograms and switching behavior are observed. The sharp contrast from the $S=1/2$ case is remarkable, and is a striking demonstration of the role of the size of the quantum spin in the phase diagram of two dimensional lattice models.

Entanglement studies of resonating valence bonds on the frustrated square lattice

We study a short-range resonating valence bond (RVB) wave function with diagonal links on the square lattice that permits sign-problem free wave function Monte-Carlo studies. Special attention is given to entanglement properties, in particular, the study of minimum entropy states (MES) according to the method of Zhang et. al. [Physical Review B {\bf 85}, 235151 (2012)]. We provide evidence that the MES associated with the RVB wave functions can be lifted from an associated quantum dimer picture of these wave functions, where MES states are certain linear combinations of eigenstates of a 't Hooft "magnetic loop"-type operator. From this identification, we calculate a value consistent with $\ln(2)$ for the topological entanglement entropy directly for the RVB states via wave function Monte-Carlo. This corroborates the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ nature of the RVB states. We furthermore define and elaborate on the concept of a "pre-Kasteleyn" orientation that may be useful for the study of lattices with non-planar topology in general.

Entanglement Entropy and Topological Order in Resonating Valence-Bond Quantum Spin Liquids

On the triangular and kagome lattices, short-ranged resonating valence bond (RVB) wave functions can be sampled without the sign problem using a recently-developed Pfaffian Monte Carlo scheme. In this paper, we study the Renyi entanglement entropy in these wave functions using a replica-trick method. Using various spatial bipartitions, including the Levin-Wen construction, our finite-size scaled Renyi entropy gives a topological contribution consistent with $γ= \text{ln}(2)$, as expected for a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ quantum spin liquid. We prove that the mutual statistics are consistent with the toric code anyon model and rule out any other quasiparticle statistics such as the double semion model.

Spin Correlations and Topological Entanglement Entropy in a Non-Abelian Spin-1 Spin Liquid

We analyze the properties of a non-Abelian spin-1 chiral spin liquid state proposed by Greiter and Thomale [PRL 102, 207203 (2009)] using variational Monte Carlo. In this state the bosonic $ν= 1$ Moore-Read Pfaffian wave function is used to describe a gas of bosonic spin flips on a square lattice with one flux quantum per plaquette. For toroidal geometries there is a three-dimensional space of these states corresponding to the topological degeneracy of the bosonic Moore-Read state on the torus. We show that spin correlations for different states in this space become indistinguishable for large system size. We also calculate the Renyi entanglement entropy for different system partitions to extract the topological entanglement entropy and provide evidence that the topological order of the lattice spin-liquid state is the same as that of the continuum Moore-Read state from which it is constructed.

Ground state uniqueness of the twelve site RVB spin-liquid parent Hamiltonian on the kagome lattice

Anderson's idea of a (short-ranged) resonating valence bond (RVB) spin liquid has been the first ever proposal of what we now call a topologically ordered phase. Since then, a wealth of exactly solvable lattice models have been constructed that have topologically ordered ground states. For a long time, however, it has been difficult to realize Anderson's original vision in such solvable models, according to which the ground state has an unbroken SU(2) spin rotational symmetry and is dominated by fluctuation of singlet bonds. The kagome lattice is the simplest lattice geometry for which parent Hamiltonians stabilizing a prototypical spin-1/2 short-ranged RVB wave function has been constructed and strong evidence has been given that this state belongs to a topological phase. The uniqueness of the desired RVB-type ground states has, however, not been rigorously proven for the simplest possible such Hamiltonian, which acts on 12 spins at a time. Rather, this uniqueness has been demonstrated for a longer ranged (19-site) variant of this Hamiltonian by Schuch et al., via making contact with powerful results for projected entangled-pair states. In this paper, we extend this result to the 12-site Hamiltonian. Our result is based on numerical studies on finite clusters, for which we demonstrate a "ground state intersection property" with implications for arbitrary system size. We also review the relations between various constructions schemes for RVB parent-Hamiltonians found in the literature.
