Ab initio calculations of the electronic structure of Ac$^+$

Accurate spectroscopic investigations of the heaviest elements are inherently challenging, due to their short lifetimes and low production yields. Success of such measurements requires both dedicated experimental techniques and strong theoretical support. Laser resonance chromatography (LRC) is a promising approach for heavy ion spectroscopy, in particularly for metals with low vapour pressure, such as actinium. We have employed the state-of-the-art relativistic Fock space coupled cluster approach as well as the configuration interaction with many-body perturbation theory method to calculate the energy levels, the transition amplitudes, the branching ratios, and the hyperfine structure parameters of the lowest excited states in Ac+. Knowledge of these properties is required for the design of experiments. Our calculations are in close agreement with experimental transition energies, leading us to expect a similar level of accuracy for the calculated hyperfine structure parameters. Based on these predictions, two possible experimental schemes are proposed for the planned LRC measurements.

Evidence for Nonlinear Isotope Shift in Yb$^+$ Search for New Boson

We measure isotope shifts for five Yb$^+$ isotopes with zero nuclear spin on two narrow optical quadrupole transitions ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2D_{3/2}$, ${}^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow {}^2D_{5/2}$ with an accuracy of $\sim 300$ Hz. The corresponding King plot shows a $3 \times 10^{-7}$ deviation from linearity at the 3 $σ$ uncertainty level. Such a nonlinearity can indicate physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) in the form of a new bosonic force carrier, or arise from higher-order nuclear effects within the SM. We identify the quadratic field shift as a possible contributor to the nonlinearity at the observed scale, and show how the nonlinearity pattern can be used in future, more accurate measurements to separate a new-boson signal from nuclear effects.

Electronic bridge excitation in highly charged Th-229 ions

The excitation of the 8 eV $^{229m}$Th isomer through the electronic bridge mechanism in highly charged ions is investigated theoretically. By exploiting the rich level scheme of open $4f$ orbitals and the robustness of highly charged ions against photoionization, a pulsed high-intensity optical laser can be used to efficiently drive the nuclear transition by coupling it to the electronic shell. We show how to implement a promising electronic bridge scheme in an electron beam ion trap starting from a metastable electronic state. This setup would avoid the need for a tunable vacuum ultraviolet laser. Based on our theoretical predictions, determining the isomer energy with an uncertainty of $10^{-5}$ eV could be achieved in one day of measurement time using realistic laser parameters.
