Ramified descent

We investigate the "ramified descent problem": which adelic points of a smooth geometrically connected variety $X$ defined over a number field $K$ can be approximated by points that lift to a (twist of a) given ramified cover? We show that the natural descent set corresponding to the problem defines an obstruction to Hasse Principle and weak approximation. Furthermore, we introduce a Brauer-Manin obstruction to the problem. This obstruction can be purely transcendental (and non-trivial) even for abelian covers, which answers in the negative a question posed by Harari at a 2019 workshop. Moreover, the counterexample we produce is also an explicit example of transcendental obstruction to weak approximation for a quotient $SL_n/G$, with $G$ constant metabelian.

Weak weak approximation and the Hilbert property for degree-two del Pezzo surfaces

We prove that del Pezzo surfaces of degree $2$ over a field $k$ satisfy weak weak approximation if $k$ is a number field and the Hilbert property if $k$ is Hilbertian of characteristic zero, provided that they contain a $k$-rational point lying neither on any $4$ of the $56$ exceptional curves nor on the ramification divisor of the anticanonical morphism. This builds upon results of Manin, Salgado--Testa--Várilly-Alvarado, and Festi--van Luijk on the unirationality of such surfaces, and upon work of the first two authors verifying weak weak approximation under the assumption of a conic fibration.

Weak approximation for del Pezzo surfaces of low degree

We prove, via an "arithmetic surjectivity" approach inspired by work of Denef, that weak weak approximation holds for surfaces with two conic fibrations satisfying a general assumption. In particular, weak weak approximation holds for general del Pezzo surfaces of degrees $1$ or $2$ with a conic fibration.

On the distribution of rational points on ramified covers of abelian varieties

We prove new results on the distribution of rational points on ramified covers of abelian varieties over finitely generated fields $k$ of characteristic zero. For example, given a ramified cover $π: X \to A$, where $A$ is an abelian variety over $k$ with a dense set of $k$-rational points, we prove that there is a finite-index coset $C \subset A(k)$ such that $π(X(k))$ is disjoint from $C$. Our results do not seem to be in the range of other methods available at present; they confirm predictions coming from Lang's conjectures on rational points, and also go in the direction of an issue raised by Serre regarding possible applications to the Inverse Galois Problem. Finally, the conclusions of our work may be seen as a sharp version of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem for abelian varieties.

Elliptic Fibrations and Hilbert Property

For a number field $K$, an algebraic variety $X/K$ is said to have the Hilbert Property if $X(K)$ is not thin. We are going to describe some examples of algebraic varieties, for which the Hilbert Property is a new result. The first class of examples is that of smooth cubic hypersurfaces with a $K$-rational point in $\mathbb{P}_n/K$, for $n \geq 3$. These fall in the class of unirational varieties, for which the Hilbert Property was conjectured by Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc. We then provide a sufficient condition for which a surface endowed with multiple elliptic fibrations has the Hilbert Property. As an application, we prove the Hilbert Property of a class of K3 surfaces, and some Kummer surfaces.

Non-rational varieties with the Hilbert Property

A variety $X/k$ is said to have the Hilbert Property if $X(k)$ is not thin. We shall describe some examples of varieties, for which the Hilbert Property is a new result. We give a criterion for determining when the Hilbert Property for a variety $X$ implies the Hilbert Property for quotients $X/G$ of the variety by an action of a finite group. In the case of linear actions of the group $G$, this gives examples of (non-rational) unirational varieties with the Hilbert Property, providing positive examples to a conjecture by Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc. We focus then on the study of the Hilbert Property for K3 surfaces that have two elliptic fibrations, in particular on diagonal quartic surfaces, i.e. varieties of the form $ax^4+by^4+cz^4+dw^4=0$. We then show, through an explicit application, how one may use the criterion above to provide other examples of K3 surfaces with the Hilbert Property. Since the Hilbert Property is related to an abudance of rational points, K3 surfaces should (conjecturally) represent a limiting case in dimension 2.
