Modeling of Intermediate Structures and Chain Conformation in Silica-Latex Nanocomposites Observed by SANS During Annealing

The evolution of the polymer structure during nanocomposite formation and annealing of silica-latex nanocomposites is studied using contrast-variation small angle neutron scattering. The experimental system is made of silica nanoparticles (Rsi \approx 8 nm) and a mixture of purpose-synthesized hydrogenated and deuterated nanolatex (Rlatex \approx 12.5 nm). The progressive disappearance of the latex beads by chain interdiffusion and release in the nanocomposites is analyzed quantitatively with a model for the scattered intensity of hairy latex beads and an RPA description of the free chains. In silica-free matrices and nanocomposites of low silica content (7%v), the annealing procedure over weeks at up to Tg + 85 K results in a molecular dispersion of chains, the radius of gyration of which is reported. At higher silica content (20%v), chain interdiffusion seems to be slowed down on time-scales of weeks, reaching a molecular dispersion only at the strongest annealing. Chain radii of gyration are found to be unaffected by the presence of the silica filler.

Superstructures par agrégation contrôlée de nanocolloïdes: caractérisation structurale par diffusion de neutrons aux petits angles et simulation numérique

The complexation of micelles or charged nanoparticles with neutral-charged block copolymers in aqueous solutions leads to the formation of colloidal superstructures also termed 'colloidal complexes'. Their primary interest relies in their monodispersity in size, and in their increased domain of stability. In this review, the structural characterization by dynamic light scattering, cryo-TEM, and small angle neutron scattering is presented. Small angle neutron scattering results have been analyzed using numerical simulations - Monte Carlo or reverse Monte Carlo (RMC). Such simulations are useful to show the compatibility between different models of colloidal superstructures, and experiment. Our results have allowed us to propose a generic structure of complex colloids, made of a dense core of interacting colloids, bridged by polyelectrolyte blocks, and a hydrated corona. We have shown that such superstructures are formed systematically in these systems, with either micelles or nanoparticles, for different copolymers, and different charges. The text is in French.

Microemulsion nanocomposites: phase diagram, rheology and structure using a combined small angle neutron scattering and reverse Monte Carlo approach

The effect of silica nanoparticles on transient microemulsion networks made of microemulsion droplets and telechelic copolymer molecules in water is studied, as a function of droplet size and concentration, amount of copolymer, and nanoparticle volume fraction. The phase diagram is found to be affected, and in particular the percolation threshold characterized by rheology is shifted upon addition of nanoparticles, suggesting participation of the particles in the network. This leads to a peculiar reinforcement behaviour of such microemulsion nanocomposites, the silica influencing both the modulus and the relaxation time. The reinforcement is modelled based on nanoparticles connected to the network via droplet adsorption. Contrast-variation Small Angle Neutron Scattering coupled to a reverse Monte Carlo approach is used to analyse the microstructure. The rather surprising intensity curves are shown to be in good agreement with the adsorption of droplets on the nanoparticle surface.

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering study of solubilization of tributyl phosphate in aqueous solutions of L64 Pluronic triblock copolymers

We have studied the solubilization behaviour of tributylphosphate (TBP) in aqueous solutions of L64-Pluronics, using light and small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Varying the temperature and the oil-content, the system presents a non trivial phase behaviour. In particular, at 308K, a first solubilization followed by an emulsification failure and a resolubilization is found. We have measured the microstructure by SANS and characterized the microemulsion droplet core-size, corona-thickness, polydispersity, and interactions. It is shown that at low oil content, the system is made of small swollen micelles. After the phase separation, the resolubilization is carried by larger oil droplets decorated by copolymer. From specific surface measurements at large angles, a surprising change in surfactant conformation is found to accompany this morphological evolution which is also supported by previous results obtained from 1H NMR experiments. In independent measurements, our structural modelling is confirmed using contrast-variation SANS.

Effect of Nanoparticle Size on the Morphology of Adsorbed Surfactant Layers

The surface aggregates structure of dimethyldodecylamine-N-oxide (C12DAO) in three silica dispersions of different particle sizes (16 - 42 nm) was studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) in a H2O/D2O solvent mixture matching the silica. At the experimental conditions (pH 9) the surfactant exists in its nonionic form and the structure of the adsorbed layer is not affected by added electrolyte. It is found that C12DAO forms spherical surface micelles of 2 nm diameter on the 16 nm silica particles, but oblate ellipsoidal surface micelles are formed on the 27 and 42 nm particles. The dimensions of these oblate surface aggregates (minor and major semi-axes Rn and Rlat) are similar to those of C12DAO micelles in the aqueous solutions. It is concluded that the morphological transition from spherical to ellipsoidal surface aggregates is induced by the surface curvature of the silica particles. A comparison of the shape and dimensions of the surface aggregates formed by C12DAO and C12E5 on the 16 nm silica particles demonstrates that the nature of the surfactant head group does not determine the morphology of the surface aggregates, but has a strong influence on the number of surface aggregates per particle, due to the different interactions of the head groups with the silica surface.

Surface Aggregate Structure of Nonionic Surfactants on Silica Nanoparticles

The self-assembly of two nonionic surfactants, pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5) and n-dodecyl-ß-maltoside (ß-C12G2), in the presence of a purpose-synthesized silica sol of uniform particle size (diameter 16 nm) has been studied by adsorption measurements, dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) using a H2O/D2O mixture matching the silica, in order to highlight the structure of the surfactant aggregates. For C12E5 strong aggregative adsorption onto the silica beads, with a high plateau value of the adsorption isotherm above the CMC was found. SANS measurements were made at a series of loadings, from zero surfactant up to maximum surface coverage. It is found that the spherical core-shell model nicely reproduces the SANS data up to and including the local maximum at q = 0.42 nm-1 but not in the Porod region of high q, indicating that the surface area of the adsorbed surfactant is underestimated by the model of a uniform adsorbed layer. A satisfactory representation of the entire scattering profiles is obtained with the model of micelle-decorated silica beads, indicating that C12E5 is adsorbed as spherical micellar aggregates. This behaviour is attributed to the high surface curvature of the silica which prevents an effective packing of the hydrophobic chains of the amphiphile in a bilayer configuration. For the maltoside surfactant ß-C12G2 very weak adsorption on the silica beads was found. The SANS profile indicates that this surfactant forms oblate ellipsoidal micelles in the silica dispersion, as in the absence of the silica beads.

Anisotropic Reinforcement of Nanocomposites Tuned by Magnetic Orientation of the Filler Network

We present a new material which displays anisotropic and mechanical properties tuneable during synthesis under magnetic field. It is formulated by mixing aqueous suspensions of polymer nanolatex and magnetic nanoparticles, coated by a thin silica layer to improve their compatibility with the polymeric matrix, followed by casting. The magnetic properties of these nanoparticles enable their pre-orientation in the resulting nanocomposite when cast under magnetic field. Detailed insight on dispersion by Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) shows chainlike nanoparticle aggregates aligned by the field on the nanometer scale. Applying strain to the nanocomposite parallel to the particle chains shows higher mechanical reinforcement, than when strain is transverse to field. . SANS from strained samples shows that strain parallel to the field induce an organization of the chains while strain perpendicular to the field destroys the chain field-induced ordering. Thus improved mechanical reinforcement is obtained from anisotropic interconnection of nanoparticle aggregates.

Engineering solid-like structures via an arrested spinodal decomposition

The possibilities to tune the structure of solid like material resulting from arrested spinodal decomposition is investigated using a system composed of lysozyme, a globular protein, dispersed in a water solution as model system for colloids with short range attraction. It is shown that the resulting arrested spinodal decomposition is driven by the interplay between the early kinetics of the spinodal decomposition and the dynamical arrest. The initial concentration, the quench depth and speed from the fluid state to the arrested state enable to tailor the mesh size of the solid network of the arrested spinodal decomposition.

Structure and rheological properties of model microemulsion networks filled with nanoparticles

Model microemulsion networks of oil droplets stabilized by non ionic surfactant and telechelic polymer C18-PEO(10k)-C18 have been studied for two droplet-to-polymer size ratios. The rheological properties of the networks have been measured as a function of network connectivity and can be described in terms of simple percolation laws. The network structure has been characterised by Small Angle Neutron Scattering. A Reverse Monte Carlo approach is used to demonstrate the interplay of attraction and repulsion induced by the copolymer. These model networks are then used as matrix for the incorporation of silica nanoparticles (R=10nm), individual dispersion being checked by scattering. A strong impact on the rheological properties is found for silica volume fractions up to 9%.

The aim of this monochromator is to reduce the intense gamma-radiation produced by conventional velocity selectors and to avoid a direct view of the guide while keeping a comparable neutron transmission (higher than 70%). The monochromator offers a continuous choice of wavelength selection in the range 0.5 to 2 nm.

Characterization of the Core-Shell Nanoparticles Formed as Soluble Hydrogen-Bonding Interpolymer Complexes at low pH

The formation of soluble hydrogen-bonding interpolymer complexes between poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid)-graft-poly(N, N dimethylacrylamide) (P(AA-co-AMPSA)-g-PDMAM) at pH = 2.0 was studied. A viscometric study showed that in semidilute solution a physical gel is formed, due to the interconnection of the anionic P(AA-co-AMPSA) backbone of the graft copolymer, in a transient network, by means of the complexes formed between the PDMAM side chains of the graft copolymer and PAA. Dynamic and static light scattering measurements, in conjunction with small angle neutron scattering measurements, suggest the formation of core-shell colloidal nanoparticles in dilute solution, comprised by an insoluble PAA/PDMAM core surrounded by an anionic P(AA-co-AMPSA) corona. Even if larger clusters are formed in semidilute solution, the size of the insoluble core remains practically stable. Atomic force microscopy performed under ambient conditions, reveal that the particles collapse and flatten upon deposition on a substrate, with dimensions close to the ones of the dry hydrophobic core.

Small Angle Scattering and Zeta Potential of Liposomes Loaded with Octa(carboranyl)porphyrazine

In this work the physicochemical characterization of liposomes loaded with a newly synthesised carboranyl porphyrazine (H2HECASPz) is described. This molecule represents a potential drug for different anticancer therapies, such as Boron Neutron Capture Therapy, Photodynamic Therapy and Photothermal Therapy. Different loading methods and different lipid mixtures were tested. The corresponding loaded vectors were studied by Small Angle Scattering (SANS and SAXS), light scattering and zeta potential. The combined analysis of structural data at various length scales and the measurement of the surface charge allowed to obtain a detailed characterization of the investigated systems. The mechanisms underlying the onset of differences in relevant physicochemical parameters (size, polydispersity and charge) were also critically discussed.

Characterization of the Soluble Nanoparticles Formed through Coulombic Interaction of Bovine Serum Albumin with Anionic Graft Copolymers at Low pH

A static light scattering (SLS) study of bovine serum albumin (BSA) mixtures with two anionic graft copolymers of poly (sodium acrylate-co-sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulphonate)-graft-poly (N, N-dimethylacrylamide), with a high composition in poly (N, N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAM) side chains, revealed the formation of oppositely charged complexes, at pH lower than 4.9, the isoelectric point of BSA. The core-corona nanoparticles formed at pH = 3.00, were characterized. Their molecular weight and radius of gyration were determined by SLS, while their hydrodynamic radius was determined by dynamic light scattering. Small angle neutron scattering measurements were used to determine the radius of the insoluble complexes, comprising the core of the particles. The values obtained indicated that their size and aggregation number of the nanoparticles, were smaller when the content of the graft copolymers in neutral PDMAM side chains was higher. Such particles should be interesting drug delivery candidates, if the gastrointestinal tract was to be used.

Adsorption and grafting on colloidal interfaces studied by scattering techniques

The adsorption of polymer and surfactant molecules onto colloidal particles or droplets in solution can be characterized non-destructively by scattering techniques. In a first part, the general framework of Dynamic Light Scattering, Small Angle Neutron and X-ray Scattering for the determination of the structure of adsorbed layers, and namely of the density profile, is presented. We then review recent studies of layers of the model polymer poly(ethylene oxide), as homopolymer or part of a block copolymer. In this field, scattering with contrast variation has been shown to be a powerful tool to obtain a detailed description of the layer structure. Adsorption of chemically more complex systems, including polyelectrolytes, polymer complexes, grafted chains and biomacromolecules are also discussed in this review, as well as surfactant adsorption.

Structure of interacting aggregates of silica nanoparticles in a polymer matrix: Small-angle scattering and Reverse Monte-Carlo simulations

Reinforcement of elastomers by colloidal nanoparticles is an important application where microstructure needs to be understood - and if possible controlled - if one wishes to tune macroscopic mechanical properties. Here the three-dimensional structure of big aggregates of nanometric silica particles embedded in a soft polymeric matrix is determined by Small Angle Neutron Scattering. Experimentally, the crowded environment leading to strong reinforcement induces a strong interaction between aggregates, which generates a prominent interaction peak in the scattering. We propose to analyze the total signal by means of a decomposition in a classical colloidal structure factor describing aggregate interaction and an aggregate form factor determined by a Reverse Monte Carlo technique. The result gives new insights in the shape of aggregates and their complex interaction in elastomers. For comparison, fractal models for aggregate scattering are also discussed.
