Analyzing the Temporal Factors for Anxiety and Depression Symptoms with the Rashomon Perspective

This paper introduces a new modeling perspective in the public mental health domain to provide a robust interpretation of the relations between anxiety and depression, and the demographic and temporal factors. This perspective particularly leverages the Rashomon Effect, where multiple models exhibit similar predictive performance but rely on diverse internal structures. Instead of considering these multiple models, choosing a single best model risks masking alternative narratives embedded in the data. To address this, we employed this perspective in the interpretation of a large-scale psychological dataset, specifically focusing on the Patient Health Questionnaire-4. We use a random forest model combined with partial dependence profiles to rigorously assess the robustness and stability of predictive relationships across the resulting Rashomon set, which consists of multiple models that exhibit similar predictive performance. Our findings confirm that demographic variables \texttt{age}, \texttt{sex}, and \texttt{education} lead to consistent structural shifts in anxiety and depression risk. Crucially, we identify significant temporal effects: risk probability demonstrates clear diurnal and circaseptan fluctuations, peaking during early morning hours. This work demonstrates the necessity of moving beyond the best model to analyze the entire Rashomon set. Our results highlight that the observed variability, particularly due to circadian and circaseptan rhythms, must be meticulously considered for robust interpretation in psychological screening. We advocate for a multiplicity-aware approach to enhance the stability and generalizability of ML-based conclusions in mental health research.

Between Tool and Trouble: Student Attitudes Toward AI in Programming Education

This study examines how AI code assistants shape novice programmers experiences during a two-part exam in an introductory programming course. In the first part, students completed a programming task with access to AI support; in the second, they extended their solutions without AI. We collected Likert-scale and open-ended responses from 20 students to evaluate their perceptions and challenges. Findings suggest that AI tools were perceived as helpful for understanding code and increasing confidence, particularly during initial development. However, students reported difficulties transferring knowledge to unaided tasks, revealing possible overreliance and gaps in conceptual understanding. These insights highlight the need for pedagogical strategies that integrate AI meaningfully while reinforcing foundational programming skills.

NLP and Education: using semantic similarity to evaluate filled gaps in a large-scale Cloze test in the classroom

This study examines the applicability of the Cloze test, a widely used tool for assessing text comprehension proficiency, while highlighting its challenges in large-scale implementation. To address these limitations, an automated correction approach was proposed, utilizing Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, particularly word embeddings (WE) models, to assess semantic similarity between expected and provided answers. Using data from Cloze tests administered to students in Brazil, WE models for Brazilian Portuguese (PT-BR) were employed to measure the semantic similarity of the responses. The results were validated through an experimental setup involving twelve judges who classified the students' answers. A comparative analysis between the WE models' scores and the judges' evaluations revealed that GloVe was the most effective model, demonstrating the highest correlation with the judges' assessments. This study underscores the utility of WE models in evaluating semantic similarity and their potential to enhance large-scale Cloze test assessments. Furthermore, it contributes to educational assessment methodologies by offering a more efficient approach to evaluating reading proficiency.
