Nœther decomposition for birational maps

Let $ϕ$ be a birational map of the complex projective plane. We know that $ϕ$ can be written as a composition of automorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C}$ and the standard quadratic birational map $σ$. This writing, that is non-unique, is minimal if the number $\mathfrak{n}(ϕ)$ of $σ$ is as small as possible. We prove that if $ϕ$ is of degree $d\geq 2$, then $\big[\frac{\ln d}{\ln 2}\big]\leq\mathfrak{n}(ϕ)\leq 2(2d-1)$.

Action of the Cremona group on foliations on $\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C}$: some curious facts

The Cremona group of birational transformations of $\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C}$ acts on the space $\mathbb{F}(2)$ of holomorphic foliations on the complex projective plane. Since this action is not compatible with the natural graduation of $\mathbb{F}(2)$ by the degree, its description is complicated. The fixed points of the action are essentially described by Cantat-Favre in \cite{CF}. In that paper we are interested in problems of "aberration of the degree" that is pairs $(ϕ,\mathcal{F})\in\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C})\times\mathbb{F}(2)$ for which $\degϕ^*\mathcal{F}<(°\mathcal{F}+1)\degϕ+\degϕ-2$, the generic degree of such pull-back. We introduce the notion of numerical invariance ($\degϕ^*\mathcal{F}=°\mathcal{F}$) and relate it in small degrees to the existence of transversal structure for the considered foliations.

Representations of some lattices into the group of analytic diffeomorphisms of the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$

In \cite{Ghys} it is proved that any morphism from a subgroup of finite index of $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{Z})$ to the group of analytic diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{S}^2$ has a finite image as soon as $n\geq 5$. The case $n=4$ is also claimed to follow along the same arguments; in fact this is not straightforward and this case indeed needs a modification of the argument. In this paper we recall the strategy for $n\geq 5$ and then focus on the case $n=4$.

Degree growth of birational maps of the plane

This article studies the sequence of iterative degrees of a birational map of the plane. This sequence is known either to be bounded or to have a linear, quadratic or exponential growth. The classification elements of infinite order with a bounded sequence of degrees is achieved, the case of elements of finite order being already known. The coefficients of the linear and quadratic growth are then described, and related to geometrical properties of the map. The dynamical number of base-points is also studied. Applications of our results are the description of embeddings of the Baumslag-Solitar groups and GL(2,Q) into the Cremona group.

Some properties of the Cremona group

We recall some properties, unfortunately not all, of the Cremona group. We first begin by presenting a nice proof of the amalgamated product structure of the well-known subgroup of the Cremona group made up of the polynomial automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^2$. Then we deal with the classification of birational maps and some applications (Tits alternative, non-simplicity...) Since any birational map can be written as a composition of quadratic birational maps up to an automorphism of the complex projective plane, we spend time on these special maps. Some questions of group theory are evoked: the classification of the finite subgroups of the Cremona group and related problems, the description of the automorphisms of the Cremona group and the representations of some lattices in the Cremona group. The description of the centralizers of discrete dynamical systems is an important problem in real and complex dynamic, we make a state of art of this problem in the Cremona group. Let $Z$ be a compact complex surface which carries an automorphism $f$ of positive topological entropy. Either the Kodaira dimension of $Z$ is zero and $f$ is conjugate to an automorphism on the unique minimal model of $Z$ which is either a torus, or a K3 surface, or an Enriques surface, or $Z$ is a non-minimal rational surface and $f$ is conjugate to a birational map of the complex projective plane. We deal with results obtained in this last case: construction of such automorphisms, dynamical properties (rotation domains...) are touched on.

Centralisateurs dans le groupe de Jonquières

We give a criterion to determine when the degree growth of a birational map of the complex projective plane which fixes (the action on the basis of the fibration is trivial) a rational fibration is linear up to conjugacy. We also compute the centraliser of such maps. It allows us to describe the centraliser of the birational maps of the complex projective plane which preserve a rational fibration (the action on the basis of the fibration being not necessarily trivial); this question is related to some classical problems of difference equations.

Embeddings of SL(2,Z) into the Cremona group

Geometric and dynamic properties of embeddings of SL(2,Z) into the Cremona group are studied. Infinitely many non-conjugate embeddings which preserve the type (i.e. which send elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic elements onto elements of the same type) are provided. The existence of infinitely many non-conjugate elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic embeddings is also shown. In particular, a group G of automorphisms of a smooth surface S obtained by blowing-up 10 points of the complex projective plane is given. The group G is isomorphic to SL(2,Z), preserves an elliptic curve and all its elements of infinite order are hyperbolic.

Automorphisms of rational surfaces with positive entropy

A complex compact surface which carries an automorphism of positive topological entropy has been proved by Cantat to be either a torus, a K3 surface, an Enriques surface or a rational surface. Automorphisms of rational surfaces are quite mysterious and have been recently the object of intensive studies. In this paper, we construct several new examples of automorphisms of rational surfaces with positive topological entropy. We also explain how to define and to count parameters in families of birational maps of the complex projective plane and in families of rational surfaces.

Automorphismes d'entropie positive, le cas des surfaces rationnelles

A complex compact surface which carries an automorphism of positive topological entropy has been proved by Cantat to be a torus, a K3 surface, an Enriques surface or a non-minimal rational surface. We deal with results obtained in this last case. After some recalls on birational maps, algebraic geometry and dynamic, we will speak about Bedford and Kim's works, but also about McMullen's work and more recently about Grivaux and the author's work. These notes have been written for four talks given at IMPA in february/march 2010.

Feuilletages et transformations périodiques

Bertini classified the birational involutions of the complex projective plane, but his geometric approach does not allow to explicit these maps easily. In this article, we present an effective approach to this problem by associating to each quadratic foliation a birational involution which is, in the generic case, a Geiser involution; this subject has already been covered by Geiser, Milinowski, Williams and alt. We end by making experiences, obtaining trivolutions from some foliations of degree 3.

Quelques propriétés des transformations birationnelles du plan projectif complexe

We present some (unfortunately not all) known properties on the Cremona group; when it's possible we mentioned links with the most known group of polynomial automorphisms of the affine plane. The mentioned properties are essentially algebraic properties: generators, relations, finite subgroups, subgroups of finite type, automorphisms of the Cremona group, Tits alternative... but also dynamical properties: classification of birational maps, centralizer, dynamic of an Heisenberg subgroup... We deal with the construction of entropic automorphisms on rational surfaces.

Transformations birationnelles de petit degré

Since the end of the XIXth century, we know that each birational map of the complex projective plane is the product of a finite number of quadratic birational maps of the projective plane; this motivates our work which essentially deals with these quadratic maps. We establish algebraic properties such as the classification of one parameter groups of quadratic birational maps or the smoothness of the set of quadratic birational maps in the set of rational maps. We prove that a finite number of generic quadratic birational maps generates a free group. We show that if f is a quadratic birational map or an automorphism of the projective plane, the normal subgroup generated by f is the full group of birational maps of the projective plane, which implies that this group is perfect. We study some dynamical properties: following an idea of Guillot, we translate some invariants for foliations in our context, in particular we obtain that if two generic quadratic birational maps are birationally conjugated, then they are conjugated by an automorphism of the projective plane. We are also interested in the presence of "invariant objects": curves, foliations, fibrations. Then follows a more experimental part: we draw orbits of quadratic birational maps with real coefficients and sets analogous to Julia sets for polynomials of one variable. We study birational maps of degree 3 and, by considering the different possible configurations of the exceptional curves, we give the "classification" of these maps. We can deduce from this that the set of the birational maps of degree 3 exactly is irreducible, in fact rationally connected.
