A formula for the volume of two-bridge knots

We give a closed formula for the volume of a two-bridge knot, more precisely for its Bloch invariant. We obtain this formula without triangulating the complement: instead, we derive it from the Hopf formula for the second homology of the fundamental group of the complement and a systematic use of Fox derivatives.

Knot state asymptotics I, AJ Conjecture and abelian representations

Consider the Chern-Simons topological quantum field theory with gauge group SU(2) and level k. Given a knot in the 3-sphere, this theory associates to the knot exterior an element in a vector space. We call this vector the knot state and study its asymptotic properties when the level is large. The latter vector space being isomorphic to the geometric quantization of the SU(2)-character variety of the peripheral torus, the knot state may be viewed as a section defined over this character variety. We first conjecture that the knot state concentrates in the large level limit to the character variety of the knot. This statement may be viewed as a real and smooth version of the AJ conjecture. Our second conjecture says that the knot state in the neighborhood of abelian representations is a Lagrangian state. Using microlocal techniques, we prove these conjectures for the figure eight and torus knots. The proof is based on q-difference relations for the colored Jones polynomial. We also provide a new proof for the asymptotics of the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of the lens spaces and a derivation of the Melvin-Morton-Rozansky theorem from the two conjectures.

Knot state asymptotics II, Witten conjecture and irreducible representations

This article pursues the study of the knot state asymptotics in the large level limit initiated in "Knot sate Asymptotics I". As a main result, we prove the Witten asymptotic expansion conjecture for the Dehn fillings of the figure eight knot. The state of a knot is defined in the realm of Chern-Simons topological quantum field theory as a holomorphic section on the SU(2)-character manifold of the peripheral torus. In the previous paper, we conjectured that the knot state concentrates on the character variety of the knot with a given asymptotic behavior on the neighborhood of the abelian representations. In the present paper we study the neighborhood of irreducible representations. We conjecture that the knot state is Lagrangian with a phase and a symbol given respectively by the Chern-Simons and Reidemeister torsion invariants. We show that under some mild assumptions, these conjectures imply the Witten conjecture on the asymptotic expansion of WRT invariants of the Dehn fillings of the knot. Using microlocal techniques, we show that the figure eight knot state satisfies our conjecture starting from q-differential relations verified by the colored Jones polynomials. The proof relies on a differential equation satisfied by the Reidemeister torsion along the branches of the character variety, a phenomenon which has not been observed previously as far as we know.

Generating series and asymptotics of classical spin networks

We study classical spin networks with group SU(2). In the first part, using gaussian integrals, we compute their generating series in the case where the networks are equipped with holonomies; this generalizes Westbury's formula. In the second part, we use an integral formula for the square of the spin network and perform stationary phase approximation under some non-degeneracy hypothesis. This gives a precise asymptotic behavior when the labels are rescaled by a constant going to infinity.

Geometric interpretation of simplicial formulas for the Chern-Simons invariant

We give a direct interpretation of Neumann's combinatorial formula for the Chern-Simons invariant of a 3-manifold with a representation in PSL(2,C) whose restriction to the boundary takes values in upper triangular matrices. Our construction does not involve group homology or Bloch group but is based on the construction of an explicit flat connection for each tetrahedron of a simplicial decomposition of the manifold.

The skein module of torus knots complements

We compute the Kauffman skein module of the complement of torus knots in S^3. Precisely, we show that these modules are isomorphic to the algebra of Sl(2,C)-characters tensored with the ring of Laurent polynomials.

Geometry of representation spaces in SU(2)

These notes of a course given at IRMA in April 2009 cover some aspects of the representation theory of fundamental groups of manifolds of dimension at most 3 in compact Lie groups, mainly $\su$. We give detailed examples, develop the techniques of twisted cohomology and gauge theory. We review Chern-Simons theory and describe an integrable system for the representation space of a surface. Finally, we explain some basic ideas on geometric quantization. We apply them to the case of representation spaces by computing Bohr-Sommerfeld orbits with metaplectic correction.

Multicurves and regular functions on the representation variety of a surface in SU(2)

We consider the representation space of a compact surface, that is the space of morphisms from the fundamental group to SU(2) up to conjugation. We show that the trace functions associated to multicurves on the surface are linearly independent as functions on the representation space. The proof relies on the Fourier decomposition of the trace functions with respect to some torus action provided by a pants decomposition. Consequently the space of trace functions is isomorphic to the skein algebra at A=-1 of the thickened surface.

Asymptotic Vassiliev Invariants for Vector Fields

We analyse the asymptotical growth of Vassiliev invariants on non-periodic flow lines of ergodic vector fields on domains of $\R^3$. More precisely, we show that the asymptotics of Vassiliev invariants is completely determined by the helicity of the vector field. As an application, we determine the asymptotic Alexander and Jones polynomials and give a formula for the asymptotic Kontsevich integral.

The Kauffman skein algebra of a surface at $\sqrt{-1}$

We study the structure of the Kauffman algebra of a surface with parameter equal to sqrt(-1). We obtain an interpretation of this algebra as an algebra of parallel transport operators acting on sections of a line bundle over the moduli space of flat connections in a trivial SU(2)-bundle over the surface. We analyse the asymptotics of traces of curve-operators in TQFT in non standard regimes where the root of unity parametrizing the TQFT accumulates to a root of unity. We interpret the case of sqrt(-1) in terms of parallel transport operators.

A la Fock-Goncharov coordinates for PU(2,1)

We describe a set of coordinates on the PU(2,1)-representation variety of the fundamental group of an oriented punctured surface $S$ with negative Euler characteristic. The main technical tool we use is a set of geometric invariants of a triple of flags in the complex hyperpolic plane. We establish a bijection between a set of decorations of an ideal triangulation of $S$ and a subset of the PU(2,1)-representation variety of $π_1(S)$.

Some asymptotics of TQFT via skein theory

For each oriented surface $Σ$ of genus $g$ we study a limit of quantum representations of the mapping class group arising in TQFT derived from the Kauffman bracket. We determine that these representations converge in the Fell topology to the representation of the mapping class group on $\boH(Σ)$, the space of regular functions on the $SL(2,\C)$ representation variety with its hermitian structure coming from the symplectic structure of the SU(2)-representation variety. As a corollary, we give a new proof of the asymptotic faithfulness of quantum representations.

Comportement à l'infini du graphe gordien des nœuds

We study the gordian graph of all knots in $\R^3$: two knots are adjacent if they differ by a single crossing change. We prove that this graph contains isometrically an infinite countable tree with infinite valency, and that the complement of any finite subset is connected.

A computation of the Kontsevich integral of torus knots

We study the rational Kontsevich integral of torus knots. We construct explicitely a series of diagrams made of circles joined together in a tree-like fashion and colored by some special rational functions. We show that this series codes exactly the unwheeled rational Kontsevich integral of torus knots, and that it behaves very simply under branched coverings. Our proof is combinatorial. It uses the results of Wheels and Wheeling and various spaces of diagrams.

Surgery on a single clasper and the 2-loop part of the Kontsevich integral

We study the 2-loop part of the rational Kontsevich integral of a knot in an integer homology sphere. We give a general formula which explains how the 2-loop part of the Kontsevich integral of a knot changes after surgery on a single clasper whose leaves are not linked to the knot. As an application, we relate this formula with a conjecture of L. Rozansky about integrality of the 2-loop polynomial of a knot.

On Kontsevich integral of torus knots

We study the unwheeled rational Kontsevich integral of torus knots. We give a precise formula for these invariants up to loop degree 3 and show that they appear as colorings of simple diagrams. We show that they behave under cyclic branched coverings in a very simple way. Our proof is combinatorial: it uses the results of Wheels and Wheelings and new decorations of diagrams.
