Numerical study of solitary waves in Dirac--Klein--Gordon system

We use numerics to construct solitary waves $\phi_\omega(x) e^{-\mathrm{i}\omega t}$ in Dirac--Klein--Gordon (in one and three spatial dimensions) and study the dependence of energy and charge of $\omega$. To construct solitary waves, we use two different procedures: the iterative method and the nested shooting method. We also consider the case of massless scalar field where we show that the standard shooting method becomes available. We use the virial identities to control the error of simulations. We discuss possible implications for the stability of solitary waves.

On gap properties for the linearized 1D Dirac--Soler model

We study spectral properties of the Dirac operator $L_0$ arising as the upper-right off-diagonal block in the linearization around standing wave solutions of the one-dimensional Soler model with power nonlinearity $f(s)=s|s|^{p-1}$, $p>0$. Our main results concern the so-called gap property: we show that if $p \geq 1$, then the only eigenvalues of $L_0$ are its ground state energies, $-2\omega$ and $0$. In contrast, for $p<1$, additional eigenvalues appear from the thresholds of the essential spectrum. Furthermore, we prove that the thresholds never admit eigenvalues and that they have at most one resonance.

Stabilization against collapse of 2D attractive Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive, three-body interactions

We consider a trapped Bose gas of $N$ identical bosons in two dimensional space with both an attractive, two-body, scaled interaction and a repulsive, three-body, scaled interaction respectively of the form $-aN^{2\alpha-1} U(N^\alpha \cdot)$ and $bN^{4\beta-2} W(N^\beta \cdot, N^\beta \cdot))$, where $a,b,\alpha,\beta>0$ and $\int_{\mathbb R^2}U(x) {\mathop{}\mathrm{d}} x = 1 = \iint_{\mathbb R^{4}} W(x,y) {\mathop{}\mathrm{d}} x {\mathop{}\mathrm{d}} y$. We derive rigorously the cubic--quintic nonlinear Schr\"odinger semiclassical theory as the mean-field limit of the model and we investigate the behavior of the system in the double-limit $a = a_N \to a_*$ and $b = b_N \searrow 0$. Moreover, we also consider the homogeneous problem where the trapping potential is removed.

Inverse problem for Love waves in a layered, elastic half-space

In this paper we study Love waves in a layered, elastic half-space. We first address the direct problem and we characterize the existence of Love waves through the dispersion relation. We then address the inverse problem and we show how to recover the parameters of the elastic medium from the empirical knowledge of the frequency--wavenumber couples of the Love waves.

On one-dimensional Bose gases with two- and (critical) attractive three-body interactions

We consider a one-dimensional, trapped, focusing Bose gas where $N$ bosons interact with each other via both a two-body interaction potential of the form $a N^{\alpha-1} U(N^\alpha(x-y))$ and an attractive three-body interaction potential of the form $-b N^{2\beta-2} W(N^\beta(x-y,x-z))$, where $a\in\mathbb{R}$, $b,\alpha>0$, $0<\beta<1$, $U, W \geq 0$, and $\int_{\mathbb{R}}U(x) \mathop{}\!\mathrm{d}x = 1 = \iint_{\mathbb{R}^2} W(x,y) \mathop{}\!\mathrm{d}x \mathop{}\!\mathrm{d}y$. The system is stable either for any $a\in\mathbb{R}$ as long as $b<\mathfrak{b} := 3\pi^2/2$ (the critical strength of the 1D focusing quintic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation) or for $a \geq 0$ when $b=\mathfrak{b}$. In the former case, fixing $b \in (0,\mathfrak{b})$, we prove that in the mean-field limit the many-body system exhibits the Bose$\unicode{x2013}$Einstein condensation on the cubic-quintic NLS ground states. When assuming $b=b_N \nearrow \mathfrak{b}$ and $a=a_N \to 0$ as $N \to\infty$, with the former convergence being slow enough and "not faster" than the latter, we prove that the ground state of the system is fully condensed on the (unique) solution to the quintic NLS equation. In the latter case $b=\mathfrak{b}$ fixed, we obtain the convergence of many-body energy for small $\beta$ when $a > 0$ is fixed. Finally, we analyze the behavior of the many-body ground states when the convergence $b_N \nearrow \mathfrak{b}$ is "faster" than the slow enough convergence $0<a_N \searrow 0$.

Dilute Bose gas with three-body interaction: recent results and open questions

We review our recent study on the ground state energy of dilute Bose gases with three-body interactions. The main feature of our results is the emergence of the 3D energy-critical Schr\"odinger equation to describe the ground state energy of a Bose-Einstein condensate, where the nonlinearity strength is determined by a zero scattering problem. Several open questions will also be discussed.

Ground state energy of the low density Bose gas with three-body interactions

We consider the low density Bose gas in the thermodynamic limit with a three-body interaction potential. We prove that the leading order of the ground state energy of the system is determined completely in terms of the scattering energy of the interaction potential. The corresponding result for two-body interactions was proved in seminal papers of Dyson (1957) and Lieb--Yngvason (1998).

The condensation of a trapped dilute Bose gas with three-body interactions

We consider a trapped dilute gas of $N$ bosons in $\mathbb{R}^3$ interacting via a three-body interaction potential of the form $N\, V(N^{1/2}(x-y,x-z))$. In the limit $N\to \infty$, we prove that every approximate ground state of the system is a convex superposition of minimizers of a 3D energy-critical nonlinear Schr\"odinger functional where the nonlinear coupling constant is proportional to the scattering energy of the interaction potential. In particular, the $N$-body ground state exhibits complete Bose--Einstein condensation if the nonlinear Schr\"odinger minimizer is unique up to a complex phase.

Results on the spectral stability of standing wave solutions of the Soler model in 1-D

We study the spectral stability of the nonlinear Dirac operator in dimension $1+1$, restricting our attention to nonlinearities of the form $f(\langle\psi,\beta \psi\rangle_{\mathbb{C}^2}) \beta$. We obtain bounds on eigenvalues for the linearized operator around standing wave solutions of the form $e^{-i\omega t} \phi_0$. For the case of power nonlinearities $f(s)= s |s|^{p-1}$, $p>0$, we obtain a range of frequencies $\omega$ such that the linearized operator has no unstable eigenvalues on the axes of the complex plane. As a crucial part of the proofs, we obtain a detailed description of the spectra of the self-adjoint blocks in the linearized operator. In particular, we show that the condition $\langle\phi_0,\beta \phi_0\rangle_{\mathbb{C}^2} > 0$ characterizes groundstates analogously to the Schr\"odinger case.

Optimal rate of condensation for trapped bosons in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime

We study the Bose-Einstein condensates of trapped Bose gases in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We show that the ground state energy and ground states of the many-body quantum system are correctly described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the large particle number limit, and provide the optimal convergence rate. Our work extends the previous results of Lieb, Seiringer and Yngvason on the leading order convergence, and of Boccato, Brennecke, Cenatiempo and Schlein on the homogeneous gas. Our method relies on the idea of 'completing the square', inspired by recent works of Brietzke, Fournais and Solovej on the Lee-Huang-Yang formula, and a general estimate for Bogoliubov quadratic Hamiltonians on Fock space.

Symmetry breaking in the periodic Thomas--Fermi--Dirac--von Weizs{\"a}cker model

We consider the Thomas--Fermi--Dirac--von~Weizs{\"a}cker model for a system composed of infinitely many nuclei placed on a periodic lattice and electrons with a periodic density. We prove that if the Dirac constant is small enough, the electrons have the same periodicity as the nuclei. On the other hand if the Dirac constant is large enough, the 2-periodic electronic minimizer is not 1-periodic, hence symmetry breaking occurs. We analyze in detail the behavior of the electrons when the Dirac constant tends to infinity and show that the electrons all concentrate around exactly one of the 8 nuclei of the unit cell of size 2, which is the explanation of the breaking of symmetry. Zooming at this point, the electronic density solves an effective nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in the whole space with nonlinearity $u^{7/3}-u^{4/3}$. Our results rely on the analysis of this nonlinear equation, in particular on the uniqueness and non-degeneracy of positive solutions.

On uniqueness and non-degeneracy of anisotropic polarons

We study the anisotropic Choquard--Pekar equation which de-scribes a polaron in an anisotropic medium. We prove the uniqueness and non-degeneracy of minimizers in a weakly anisotropic medium. In addition, for a wide range of anisotropic media, we derive the symmetry properties of minimizers and prove that the kernel of the associated linearized operator is reduced, apart from three functions coming from the translation invariance, to the kernel on the subspace of functions that are even in each of the three principal directions of the medium.
