A purity theorem for Mahler equations

The principal aim of this paper is to establish a purity theorem for Mahler functions that is reminiscent of famous purity theorems for G-functions by D. and G. Chudnovsky and for E-functions (and, more generally, for holonomic arithmetic Gevrey series) by Y. Andr{\'e}. Our approach is based on a preliminary study of independent interest of the nature of the solutions of Mahler equations. Roughly speaking, we prove a reduction result for Mahler systems, implying that any Mahler equation admits a complete basis of solutions formed of what we call generalized Mahler series. These are sums involving Puiseux series, Hahn series of a very special type and solutions of inhomogeneous equations of order 1 with constant coefficients. In the light of B. Adamczewski, J. P. Bell and D. Smertnig's recent height gap theorem, we introduce a natural filtration on the set of generalized Mahler series according to the arithmetic growth of the coefficients of the Puiseux series involved in their decomposition. This filtration has five pieces. Our purity theorem states that the membership of a generalized Mahler series to one of the three largest pieces of this filtration propagates to any other generalized Mahler series solution of its minimal Mahler equation. We also show that this statement does not extend to the smallest two pieces.

Frobenius method for Mahler equations

Using Hahn series, one can attach to any linear Mahler equation a basis of solutions at 0 reminiscent of the solutions of linear differential equations at a regular singularity. We show that such a basis of solutions can be produced by using a variant of Frobenius method.

Hahn series and Mahler equations: Algorithmic aspects

Many articles have recently been devoted to Mahler equations, partly because of their links with other branches of mathematics such as automata theory. Hahn series (a generalization of the Puiseux series allowing arbitrary exponents of the indeterminate as long as the set that supports them is well-ordered) play a central role in the theory of Mahler equations. In this paper, we address the following fundamental question: is there an algorithm to calculate the Hahn series solutions of a given linear Mahler equation? What makes this question interesting is the fact that the Hahn series appearing in this context can have complicated supports with infinitely many accumulation points. Our (positive) answer to the above question involves among other things the construction of a computable well-ordered receptacle for the supports of the potential Hahn series solutions.

Hypertranscendence and $q$-difference equations over elliptic functionfields

The differential nature of solutions of linear difference equations over the projective line was recently elucidated. In contrast, little is known about the differential nature of solutions of linear difference equations over elliptic curves. In the present paper, we study power series $f(z)$ with complex coefficients satisfying a linear difference equation over a field of elliptic functions $K$,with respect to the difference operator $\phi f(z)=f(qz)$, $2\le q\in\mathbb{Z}$,arising from an endomorphism of the elliptic curve. Our main theoremsays that such an $f$ satisfies, in addition, a polynomial differentialequation with coefficients from $K,$ if and only if it belongs tothe ring $S=K[z,z^{-1},\zeta(z,\Lambda)]$ generated over $K$ by$z,z^{-1}$ and the Weierstrass $\zeta$-function. This is the first elliptic extension of recent theorems of Adamczewski, Dreyfus and Hardouin concerning the differential transcendence of solutions of difference equations with coefficients in $\mathbb{C}(z),$ in which various difference operators were considered (shifts, $q$-differenceoperators or Mahler operators). While the general approach, of usingparametrized Picard-Vessiot theory, is similar, many features, andin particular the emergence of monodromy considerations and the ring$S$, are unique to the elliptic case and are responsible for non-trivial difficulties. We emphasize that, among the intermediate results, we prove an integrability result for difference-differential systems over ellipticcurves which is a genus one analogue of the integrability results obtained by Sch\''afke and Singer over the projective line.

Algebraic solutions of linear differential equations: an arithmetic approach

Given a linear differential equation with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(x)$, an important question is to know whether its full space of solutions consists of algebraic functions, or at least if one of its specific solutions is algebraic. After presenting motivating examples coming from various branches of mathematics, we advertise in an elementary way a beautiful local-global arithmetic approach to these questions, initiated by Grothendieck in the late sixties. This approach has deep ramifications and leads to the still unsolved Grothendieck-Katz $p$-curvature conjecture.

On the algebraic dependence of holonomic functions

We study the form of possible algebraic relations between functions satisfying linear differential equations. In particular , if f and g satisfy linear differential equations and are algebraically dependent, we give conditions on the differential Galois group associated to f guaranteeing that g is a polynomial in f. We apply this to hypergeometric functions and iterated integrals.

On the Kernel curves associated with walks in the quarter plane

The kernel method is an essential tool for the study of generating series of walks in the quarter plane. This method involves equating to zero a certain polynomial, the kernel polynomial, and using properties of the curve, the kernel curve, this defines. In the present paper, we investigate the basic properties of the kernel curve (irreducibility, singularities, genus, uniformization, etc).

Differential transcendence criteria for second-order linear difference equations and elliptic hypergeometric functions

We develop general criteria that ensure that any non-zero solution of a given second-order difference equation is differentially transcendental, which apply uniformly in particular cases of interest, such as shift difference equations, q-dilation difference equations, Mahler difference equations, and elliptic difference equations. These criteria are obtained as an application of differential Galois theory for difference equations. We apply our criteria to prove a new result to the effect that most elliptic hypergeometric functions are differentially transcendental.

Walks in the quarter plane, genus zero case

We use Galois theory of difference equations to study the nature of the generating series of (weighted) walks in the quarter plane with genus zero kernel curve. Using this approach, we prove that the generating series do not satisfy any nontrivial (possibly nonlinear) algebraic differential equation with rational coefficients.

On the nature of the generating series of walks in the quarter plane

In the present paper, we introduce a new approach, relying on the Galois theory of difference equations, to study the nature of the generating series of walks in the quarter plane. Using this approach, we are not only able to recover many of the recent results about these series, but also to go beyond them. For instance, we give for the first time hypertranscendency results, {\it i.e.}, we prove that certain of these generating series do not satisfy any nontrivial nonlinear algebraic differential equation with rational coefficients.

Functional relations of solutions of q-difference equations

In this paper, we study the algebraic relations satisfied by the solutions of $q$-difference equations and their transforms with respect to an auxiliary operator. Our main tool is the parametrized Galois theories developed in two papers. The first part of this paper is concerned with the case where the auxiliary operator is a derivation, whereas the second part deals a $\mathbf{q'}$-difference operator. In both cases, we give criteria to guaranty the algebraic independence of a series, solution of a $q$-difference equation, with either its successive derivatives or its $\mathbf{q'}$-transforms. We apply our results to $q$-hypergeometric series.

Hypertranscendence of solutions of Mahler equations

The last years have seen a growing interest from mathematicians in Mahler functions. This class of functions includes the generating series of the automatic sequences. The present paper is concerned with the following problem, which is omnipresent in combinatorics: a set of Mahler functions $u_{1},...,u_{n}$ being given, are $u_{1},...,u_{n}$ and their successive derivatives algebraically independent? In this paper, we give general criteria ensuring an affirmative answer to this question. We apply our main results to the generating series attached to the so-called Baum-Sweet and Rudin-Shapiro automatic sequences. In particular, we show that these series are hyperalgebraically independent, i.e., that these series and their successive derivatives are algebraically independent. Our approach relies of the parametrized difference Galois theory (in this context, the algebro-differential relations between the solutions of a given Mahler equation are reflected by a linear differential algebraic group).

Galois Groups of Difference Equations of Order Two on Elliptic Curves

This paper is concerned with difference equations on elliptic curves. We establish some general properties of the difference Galois groups of equations of order two, and give applications to the calculation of some difference Galois groups. For instance, our results combined with a result from transcendence theory due to Schneider allow us to identify a large class of discrete Lamé equations with difference Galois group $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb C)$.

On Dwork's p-adic formal congruences theorem and hypergeometric mirror maps

Using Dwork's theory, we prove a broad generalisation of his famous p-adic formal congruences theorem. This enables us to prove certain p-adic congruences for the generalized hypergeometric series with rational parameters; in particular, they hold for any prime number p and not only for almost all primes. Along the way, using Christol's functions, we provide an explicit formula for the "Eisenstein constant" of any globally bounded hypergeometric series with rational parameters. As an application of these results, we obtain an arithmetic statement of a new type concerning the integrality of Taylor coefficients of the associated mirror maps. It essentially contains all the similar univariate integrality results in the litterature.

Dynamics of rational symplectic mappings and difference Galois theory

In this paper we study the relationship between the integrability of rational symplectic maps and difference Galois theory. We present a Galoisian condition, of Morales-Ramis type, ensuring the non-integrability of a rational symplectic map in the non-commutative sense (Mishchenko-Fomenko). As a particular case, we obtain a com- plete discrete analogue of Morales-Ramis Theorems for non-integrabi- lity in the sense of Liouville.

Galois groups of the Lie-irreducible generalized $q$-hypergeometric equations of order three with $q$-real parameters : an approach using a density theorem

In this paper we compute the difference Galois groups of the Lie-irreducible regular singular generalized q-hypergeometric equations of order 3 with q-real parameters by using a density theorem due to Sauloy. In contrast with the differential case, we show that these groups automatically contain the special linear group SL(3,C).

Familles fuchsiennes d'équations aux (q-)différences et confluence

In a first part, we give a method for solving a family of fuchsian systems of operators of pseudo-derivations associated to a family of homographies with two parameters which unify and generalize the differential, the difference and the $q$-difference cases. In a second part, we study the problems of confluence related to these families.
